I was happy with Pipex for a number of years but once Tiscali bought them out customer service levels dropped alarmingly. UK based technical support disappeared and moved overseas, and prices went up. Best to move on if you don't get value for money or good support so I moved over to O2 who are brilliant. Great support and a really competitive pricing structure.

Been with Pipex for 4 years. Was good, but their customer service has fell off rapidly since taken over by Tiscali. I wanted to set up a direct debit after moving banks. Told via email that I'd have to set this up by dialling the 0871 number. This information was repeated word for word FOUR times! Are these guys really suitable to be running this once fine ISP brand? This is the ONLY company I've used accessed via internet that can't set up Direct Debit on the internet!!!!! Tried to call the 0871 number, but had to hang up after a 15minute wait. Meanwhile their automated call to my home number tells me that my payment has failed-due to moving banks-and to ring the 0871 number. They wouldn't even send me their details so I could set it up with my bank either. VERY DISAPPOINTING !!!!!!!

Cheap but since being moved to Datastream, slow varying throughput. Support very poor and lack real knowledge of ADSL, keep giving usual run a speedtest, plug into test socket.

I've been a loyal PIPEX customer for perhaps 8 years, even though their customer service has been average at best, however, over the last year the quality of DSL service has just plummetted to the point where anything beyond simple browser and email usage has become unusable.

The service speed is ok, although getting 2.4mbps on an adsl MAX line is a bit disappointing, however as im a couple of miles from the exchange this is probably typical.

But the packet loss, particularly in the evenings, is absolutely crippling preventing any real time on-line gaming including LFS (PC), Singstar (PS3), ToyHome (PS3), WOW (PC), WWIIOL (PC), GTR2 (PC), EVE (Mac or PC).

Ping plotter shows that the real disruption to my service happens once my packets are inside the PIPEX network, losing 20-50% of packets at ge-0-0-0-0.cr01.gs1.dsl.pipex.net.

Calls to PIPEX for resolution have proven a complete waste of time as they use the following tactics to dissuaade your from pursuing:

    1. Long call wait times - expect up to an hour
    2. Refusal to accept your own testing evidence instead requiring you to try another router, dsl filters, master socket etc even when you can prove the issue is in their domain.
    3. Blaming BT
    4. General delay and sloth
    5. Contract leverage i.e. they will charge you to leave the service even though the quality makes it unusable

I now have lost the will to continue, and will exit just as soon as my contract expires.

Please, save yourself the grief and pick another ISP.

Have been with pipex for 4 years but recently the line speed ha become so bad that i forced them to reduce the price and got 2 free months. DOWNLOAD SPEED O.4MB UPLOAD 0.3MB If this is the best they can do when they are rated as one of the best isp,s in the uk as far as I am concerned I may as well go back to dial up.!!!!!!!

UK

"speed, cost, customer service, spam/viruses, line dropping... you name it"
"Seriously sucks"

Been with pipex for years. After takeover by Tiscali, service in every area went downhill. Line speed plummetted. Line kept droppiing, promised DSL adapters for testing on 4 separate occcasions... never happened. They recommended regrading, which took them 3 months, but I cancelled beforehand as it was taking so long, ( they promised 10 days) and given MAC code after many phone calls. But they ignored it and regraded me. Due to stress, did not immediately move to new ISP, and now bills of £132 per month. No usage monitor. Confusion of what package they have me on ! Have the cheek to say they will charge me for 12 months.

After takeover, between 10 and 50 spam emails, at least 4 viruses on computer in last two months.

    Seriously damages your health.

Almost no internet connectivity between 6pm and 11pm.

Current speed DL 350ish and UP 257kbps where I used to get 1Mg +

Finally squeezed MAC code from them. I can only assume they are punishing by throttling my speeds even more while I wait for new ISP on enta network... no proof.

What once was a brilliant ISP is so bad its unbelieveable.

    Agreed

Yes, Pipex used to be a very reliable ISP, but no more. As soon as my 12-month contract is up (trust me to sign up for a new service just before the Tiscali take-over), I'm off.

    @pipex.com

    Pipex Crap ?

The answer to that one is yes they are crap !
Customer service is non existant and if you do get through to someone, its probably a robot.
I was with Pipex for 2 years on 2Meg connection paying £24 per month. I found out by chance they were advertising an 8Meg connection for same money. I was furious as I had no notification of this. I switched to 8Meg stating at the time I would not sign any new contract. I have had this since April 07 and am continually getting about 3Meg max download at peak times which is crap and useless to me. If you pay for an 8Meg service you at least want in the ballpark thereof !
I found out recently that ADSL 2 had been activated in my area so am changing asap. New providers reckon I will get around 11Meg download going to a 24Meg connection paying £18 per month......I can live with that !

Rule of thumb......Avoid Pipex, as they are crap !

Got the full 8mb with free phone calls to 01/02, should be £27 but works out more!

Most phone calls to businesses go to lo-call or national rate which isn't free so you end up paying more on top. About £5-10 pm. Even calling support isn't free and is an 0845 number costing £5 for the obligatory hours wait in a queue, and you will have to call, trust me.

I've been with them just almost a year, a year of hell. The first two months were great then speeds dropped radically. at one stage to peak time speeds dropped to 40k, yes you heard me, less than dial-up!! This lasted for 3-4 months and then all was okay suddenly. During the whole period support were useless, when they spoke enough English to understand the problem. No racism intended just pure fact. Repeatedly telling me to do speed tests without taking the problem further. Then I'd ring up again, have to explain again, then do the tests again, and again, and again.

Speeds have dropped steadily since but slowly. All in all, Ive had 6 out of 12 months service that was worth paying for. Even then at best I get a 3mb connection not the 5mb that the BT site says I should be expecting.

Even now I have a problem with low SNR rates, dipping to 1dB (with DSL needing 5dB or above) but nothing is being done! I only live 1 KM from the exchange too!!

To make matters worse they've just been taken over by Tiscali. What else is going to go wrong I wonder? I'm not waiting to find out and am only waiting for a MAC code to arrive. . . . . .

Stay away from these monkeys and get a decent connection elsewhere.

    pipex worst internet provider about

I to are having problems with pipex i have been with them almost 2 years and never had good speed with them to start with but i stayed with them. Then they brought out the 8mb deal which for a start was £10.00 cheaper than what i was getting with pipex solo so i upgraded to pipex max in April this year. 1st 10 days were ok speed was better then i started to notice in the afternoons about 3pm when the kids were coming home from school my speed was starting to drop. This went on for a month 3pm to about 10pm in the nights its was pointless using the internet. So i sent them an email complaining. After complaining to them my connection used to drop and i would lose the internet for a few seconds. Which they were adamant it was'nt them doing it. Well my speed tests some afternoons and nights would less than dial up I sent 6 speed tests off to them at certain times of the day when my speed was bad. Well anyway after 6 months of complaining I still cant get out of their contract with them. Because they wont waive the fee I would have to pay to cancel it. I have another 5 months of hell to go with this company. By the way now my internet connection is less than dial up on bad times and the bad times are from 2pm in the afternoon until 12am in the morning and all weekend. So i would never recommend pipex to anyone just hope I can find my way out of their contract

This ISP has a UK presence. I have been with them for about 7 years. They are reliable, easily contactable, give good straight forward advise and very happy to talk you any challenges .e.g. setting up my wireless network. I would recommend them and give them a 9/10 rating. What would have got the 10? If they were a tad less expensive.
