Currently average 400-550 kbps down and 500-600 kbps up, lines in need of upgrade in west aukland. When I was in Mt Albert speeds were more acceptable, 2-3 mbps down.
They have a monopoly and oversold the service with free unlimited dl's that damaged everyone speeds in the higher tiers, without bothering to upgrade any of the old lines.

I have been a subscriber of xtra.co.nz DSL for more than 2 years and have been complaining to them for several months about the poor quality of the service provided.
Every time I phone the help desk they try to give me a new case number, so the issue gets treated as a different problem each time. I have insisted during the last 4 calls that the same case number be used as the problem I reported 3 months ago has not been rectified. In fact it doesn't even appear to have been looked at. At one help desk operator's request, I emailed some tracert results to the adsl helpdesk. The only response I have received is an auto-reply.
I have had to cancel subscriptions to all the online games I have been playing as the high amounts of packet loss within the Telecom/Xtra network has made it impossible to play them. I was constantly stalling, getting packet loss messages, and regularly dropped from servers due to connection time-outs.Even browser-based games are impossible to play from time to time.
Dial up is more reliable and other ISPs have better support. Hopefully Local Loop Unbundling will improve things, when competing ISPs are allowed to place their own equipment in the network. That won't happen this year.
After a 10 month arguement, I have changed ISP and am boycotting Telecom. Full story at »sqwert.net

$69 per month "I got the uncapped (3.5Mbps at the time), no data limited connection." "The technical support is a joke, but I never needed to use it" "It was a good plan, before they took it off the market"

Xtra began offering a "go Large" packages about 6 months ago, which was basically full speed, no data limit broadband, which I promptly snapped up. Having setup more broadband connections than I could shake a stick at, Ive never needed to call Xtra Support, which is lucky, because it's usually a half hour wait just to speak to someone who sounds like they are reading off a script. About two months after releasing the package, Xtra pulled it off the market due to people "abusing the service" (ie. downloading lots and lots of stuff). Because of a nice little clause in the contract, they had to continue to offer the service to those already signed up, so Im happy as larry with my internet. I probably wouldn't be with Xtra if I had to choose one of their data-capped connections as they are just so obscenely expensive.

New Zealand
$49 per month- (12 month contract)
about 14 days "Unlimited bandwidth usage.(usually clock up around 60GB total up/down per month)" "Heavily shaped/managed traffic. Download speed avg 30kB, advertised max speed 7.6m/128. Note: Plan no longer avaiable." "Slow speed, yet for same price for all other providers in NZ you're looking at 5-10GB capped for same price/advertised speed."

Bandwidth shaping/traffic management used and all users in unlimited plan are lumped into a separate pool from all other users on other plans meaning better speeds are possible, but for $50 this is the only plan you can pull upward of 60gb bandwidth usage without being throttled to 64kbits or paying over usage charges.
The main problem in all off this is the fact that NZ broadband is overpriced, bandwidth caps are insanely small and advertised speeds in reality are way lower. Telecom owning the local copper loop doesn't help the price/bandwidth cap thing, and the fact the copper loop is so outdated causes almost every exchange to bottle neck the speed.
With LLU being forced upon Telecom by the government, hopefully over the next year or so and this the implementations of this take effect we may see improvements but in reality it is going to take major investment to upgrade out lines and install fiber cable in the major centers before any true decent priced, fast broadband will be evenly available for the majority of New Zealander's.
Note: Due to the swamping of local exchanges this plan is no longer available to new sign ups. For those looking to connect to broadband in New Zealand, go with »www.inspire.net.nz
With no contract to sign, free connection and bandwidth caps/speeds similar to Xtra and others and prices far better (no need to sign up for tolls to avoid paying $10 extra) and an option on weather to have capped speed or over usage charge for you connection and weather you want interleaving off to improve ping time on their faster connections they are by far the most value for money, out in the open, no hidden terms and costs providers I have dealt with, and if I didn't have to pay $100 for breaking my 12 contract with Xtra, and I couldn't get such a comparably large amount of data each month I would defiantly be with them.
