We were concerned about horror stories from other users and I was worried about how the Comcast installer would screwup my powered radio shack two-way splitter. My actual experience was the opposite. The technician surprised me by expressing interest and curiosity about the splitter and he applied his measurement equipment to the input and output and adjusted the gain to be optimum (it's not true that max gain is best). He was dissatisfied with the incoming signal from the pole and before I knew what was going on four (count them, 4) Comcast trucks showed up outside my house and an army of guys climbed up and down the pole tweaking and adjusting until the tech, looking at his metering devices, pronounced the result "perfect". My old RCA cable modem was replaced with a new device of unknown brand (not before he scorned the RCA as belonging in a museum). Then he used my PC to log onto Comcast and began a computerized process of setting up my account etc. It took a while to do that and he discovered a few errors and plugged away until they were fixed to his satisfaction. Then he really surprised me by examining in great detail all the phone lines in my house - tracing the wires and testing each one - finding two problems that required replacing a splice block and rewiring one outlet. Finally all internal phone lines met with his satisfaction and after more testing he decided everything was working correctly. We tested all phones and verified everything was correct. He began all this at 4:00 PM and did not leave until 7:30 PM expressing some degree of hunger. That was about a month ago and as of today there has not been a hitch. The digital voice has worked perfectly and so also has the internet and my splitter etc. I did hit a snag several days later when we tried to log onto the account to view messages etc. and needed a few calls into their support to get it all logged in and apparently working. Since his visit I notice the old phone unit still sitting on the wall and still plugged in? In general I felt the technician took pride in what he did and also determined to leave with a satisfied customer which he did.

Used to have nothing but problems with SBC (bad drop they refused to replace, although they did switch pairs a few times). Finally changed to Comcast and have nothing bad to say about them yet. Have CDV and HSI on same RCA modem no problems at all run a linksys router for XBOX live no lag! everything is great. will post if anything changes though!

    ·RoadRunner Cable
My experience with Comcast DV was the most extreme positive and negative, with one company, I’ve had. The installation took four appointments, of which I was notified of cancellation for one of them. It apparently had to do with porting my number, which is understandable, but not notifying me of cancellations isn’t. But hey it’s only my time - no time or money lost by Comcast.

A problem cropped up – after initially being able to access my account online, it stopped being accessible. Their “tech support” was non-existent. I had to deal with customer service which is referred to as tech support but isn’t – there was no way to speak with tech support. Those masquerading as tech support were clueless, and five different CS reps ended up giving me five “tickets” with five numbers with no action taken on them – over a two week period.

Service is provided to my location in Florida.

The good: Voice quality is excellent. The installers were excellent. Initial cost for triple play.

If the price rises significantly, I’ll be looking at the competition – hopefully Verizon FiOS.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast Digital Vo..
At Comcast Digital voice for about three months now. I switched over from SunRocket which prior to their demise was great. SunRocket had a great interactive website and a far superior feature set.

It took me 10 days to get an appointment to install the phone. When the tech got here he started to disconnect the modem I have purchased. He said I would have to rent the combination phone device/modem. I said I wanted to keep my existing modem, and complained that that wasn't part of the deal when I spoke to the rep at the office. He relented and put a splitter on the line.

I had major problems porting my line over from SunRocket, the tech from Comcast insisted that the number was ported over properly but I still received some calls to my SunRocket gizmo or not at all. Eventually I tracked down the problem myself, by calling Global Crossing, from whom SunRocket had leased the phone number. Global Crossing was very helpful, even went so far as to call Comcast on my behalf, since Comcast refused to call Global Crossing. Long story short after several hours on the phone, and about 10 days I managed to get my phone number ported over.

My biggest problem with Comcast, outside of them constantly pointing to someone else whenever there's a problem is that the website called the Digital Voice Center is terrible. When it works, which in my experience is only been about 50% of the time, it takes over a minute to load, and accessing a voice message takes several clicks on another minute or so. I find it frustrating that they can just e-mail me the voice message when it's received.

The feature set for Comcast is extremely basic not nearly on a par with other VOIP providers. I considered switching to Vonage, but in view of all the lawsuits and patent infringements I was concerned that they would not be around for the long haul, and after my experience was SunRocket I needed something that was dependable.

Overall I got a phone that works, but offers me little more than I could get if I went with a landline and only a moderate decrease in price.

Comcast seems like a great option until you actually get it. Out of three weeks of service my phone was unusable four days: Three Saturdays from 2pm until Sunday morning and one Wedensday. I could make or receive calls but nobody could hear me and voicemail systems couldn't "hear" my keypad. Techs and customer service could never identify the problem, nor did they want to. Customer service reps and supervisors could claim to follow up or they would return calls, however they never did and most would close tickets on my account without issues being resolved or even leaving their names. Field techs would give conflicting reports when they went to my apt and would say that they were scheduling follow-ups at the main box for the building, however they would note it to my account and forget to schedule the appointment. They also misrepresented the ability to use a normal wall outlet for phone, claiming they worked like any other phone company when I actually had to plug directly into the modem because I didn't have both lines on the same wall.

One major thing I learned was always as for their SIM Number. This is a way to retrace the employee you spoke with. This is different then an employee ID, which they claim doesn't exist, and their phone extension, which can only be traced if you get a rep on the same floor of the office you spoke to them at and even then if you're very lucky. They will also claim that there is no way to get a list of credits or your billing rates but if you go to a local office they will do a print-out.

I got lucky. I had such a long ticket history, including refunds that were never entered, that that I was able to get activation refunded and the other $33 prices for TV and internet locked to my account. Although spent 6 hours that month just on my cellphone trying to get service repaired. Luckily, Verizon Wireless had free nights and weekends and much better service.

In the summer of 2006, we were looking for an alternative to AT&T. We were tired of the costs. Somehow, we found out about Comcast Digital Voice. We may have been one of the first people in our area to get it.

We called and had someone come out and set it up. We were able to transfer our original phone number to CDV. Our adapter is set up in the basement nearest my oldest computer.

In the beginning, we had some issues. Most of them were line quality issues. They were usually fixed in pretty short order. But, it has been eight months and everything seems to run smoothly. The only problem we've had has been with occasional power outages, which are few and far between.

Note: in case of outage, have either a cell phone or neighbor's phone number in handy. Otherwise, it's a good alternative to the telcos.

    10/5/07

After suffering thru more than a week of daily snf evening outages, we are making the switch to AT&T.

Call quality is fine. Its on battery backup. Won't work if the modem loses sync. I'm not sure if it's any cheaper than pots.

    Bottom line:
    It's a phone line.

No complaints about the digital voice service itself. It took many weeks for us to get our cable internet connection setup, but that's another story. Call quality is excellent and services are a great value for the money.

This is my fourth foray into VoIP, first with CallVantage, second with Vonage, third was VoicePulse and now Comcast Digital Voice. My first was with CallVantage or ATT and at the time it was rather early adopter and their customer support folks worked only by script and had no technical skills; they couldn't keep the TA working, I gave up on the second TA. My second attempt was with Vonage...they lost my order; I carefully shopped BBR this time and chose VoicePulse. They were great, good service, easy install, standards based service I would recommend to anyone. With a job change I no longer needed (or wanted) the phone number from VoicePulse so I discontinued service for a year. Having CDV installed was the next step for me; to have my home phone number moved from Verizon POTS to Comcast DV.

My wife insists that we have a home phone (won't go exclusively wireless); CDV compared to POTS with equivalent services is significantly less expensive so I decided to move my home phone number from Verizon to Comcast...and what headaches would ensue? Actually...none. The only delay was due to Verizon provisioning adding a week to the install date. Same phone number...seamless transition...can't tell the difference from POTS except CDV comes with more services. I haven't tested all the capabilities yet but so far I have no difficulty recommending CDV. E911 was already set up, the TA has battery backup and the install was smooth. CDV is more expensive than basic standards based VoIP yet it is an excellent value particularly for those folks replacing their home POTS service, looking for more than just the lowest price.

After closing my Vonage account and switching to CDV, everything went smooth. The call seem the same if not better. The call priority is awsome if you downoload and upload a lot. My installer was cool as hell also lol. Not to much to say at the moment I only had it for maybe 12 hours so far. I will post most in a week or so.

    price jump in 12 months

For "value", did you check what
the ongoing cost will be after the
    12 month triple play special
    price expires.

I was told the $99 plan becomes
    about $140/month after the year.

Mine runs about $160 right now. I have 3 Dual Tuner DVR, and High Teir Internet. It would go upto around $200 I'm sure after the 1 year. I will downgrade it most so I'm back around 150 . Not to mention when I mvoe in Dec I will prob drop all the DVR boxes but 1.

Re: price jump in 12 months

Wow, I couldn't handle such a cable bill.

My comcast tv and comcast internet run total of $61/month. With all fees, my telephone thru viatalk runs $12.05/month for unlimited local/long distance (2 yr deal). Or a total of $73/month. Actually, since I referred a friend to VT and they signed up, I get 10% less than that. Anyway, comcast triple play just doesn't cut it for me before or after the promo period.

Oh...on the priority for upload/download, I have a router with QoS and tweaked my settings while running DSLR speedtests, mainly listening on the "other" side of the voip call so I can hear what happens during the upload test. The most I get now is just a click or pop during such an extreme test. So, it is possible to get good non-comcast voip service.

And on battery backup, I have a huge battery backup that all my network equipment is powered by. I can go at least 12 hours with phone and internet connectivity during an outage. My battery backup uses a deep-cycle marine battery.
