Flashcom is THE most incopetent, unresponsive, and inetp company that I have ever dealt with! Avoid them.

In April I placed an order. They mis flagged my order (so they say). Instalation was not started until July.

On August 10th Covad supposedly installed my service. It is now Sep 8, and the service still does not work.

I don't know if covad is at fault, or bell atlantic, or flashcom. I do know that after 6 emails to flashcom technical support, 10 phone calls (with 8 hours totoal time on hold), I have yet to get a straight answer from Flashcom. Flashcom has never returned a phone call. They have told me numerous times "we don't know what the problem is. we will look into it and call you back".

I've been told things like "there is a battery on your phone line, and the phone company has to come and remove it". I've been told the router needs to be replaced, but they haven't replaced it yet. I've been told that bell atlantic needs to perform some work. When I asked what work was going to be done, or if I needed to be present, and what time I needed to be there I was told that they didn't know.

When I first began this, I asked if the had a news server. The response was "well you can try xx.yyy.z, that might work".

NO ONE IN THERE RIGHT MIND WOULD GET INVOLVED IN ANYWAY WITH THIS COMPANY. OUR COMPANY WAS WITHOUT EMAIL FOR APPROX. 4 WEEKS AFTER I FOOLISHLY TRANSFER OUR DOMAIN NAME AND NOW I'M TOLD THE CAN'T EVEN HOST OUR WEB SITE WITH THE SAME DOMAIN NAME. BAD,

    I ordered 200K SDSL.
The order process was HORRIBLE. I had to call in the Better Business Bureau in order to help expedite the process. They were awful about returning phone calls. One person, Therry (I think is how she spells her name) was terrific and really dedicated, but the rest of them could go to heck. Once I finally got an install date and time and the wiring was done, it was pretty good.

The service, now up is pretty good. I am little disappointed at the throughput at times -- there seems to be too much congestion, but I can't tell where it is... I haven't investigated.
On clear sailing, I get 22-25 K/sec download times.
Technial support also was bad, until I got the chief (Jim) but I believe he is no longer there.

I ordered Flashcom's 384K/128K special with the Free installation and Modem (DSL Bridge). Ordering was simple, since I am only 3000 ft from my CO. But had to wait about 4-5 weeks for the installation by Covad. The modem I received dropped constantly. After giving up on email help, I called and stayed persistent with them with follow-ups..Flashcom screwed up the scheduling with Covad for a tech to drop me off a new modem, the day they said they would arrive...no one showed..I called and bitched, and after going to work for the rest of the day, I recieved a voice message from Covad asking if a tech could drop by the next day if I could be there. Another message was from the tech that dropped by after 3 PM that day (I was not there), but he left a pager number. I called it and found out he lived about 20 minutes from me..and asked if I could drop by and do a swap.. He had no problem with that so I went and got a new modem, he explained that all Efficient 5250 modems with the serial number starting with 937 were from a bad batch and all should be promptly replaced. He was right. When I got home, I hooked it up and the modem hasn't dropped once since then. The speed I have seen in NetMedic has been over 340kbps when doing a download of a huge file (testing) So I'm getting alot of my allocated capacity. I can't blame the techs for problems, its mostly Administration from Covad and Flashcom that have not improved thier system for coordination and providing prompt service in both customer support and tech support. Once the service is installed and running, it has been very satisfactory so far...just hope I never have to call for tech support, thats all. I also setup a PC as my own router with 2 NICS running Sygate and one card hooks to the modem...I am able to use 3 other PC's on my small network that have the always on link to my service, so thats a good alternative for people that have more than one PC..

I also forgot.. IBS gave me a contract guarantee of 85% --> 90% of my theoretical bandwidth all the time, and I had them ping my favorite quake servers to ensure that I'd be getting quality service.

I agree with all the bad reviews. I've never had so much trouble trying to spend money! At the time (around 8/98) Flashcom was one of the *only* DSL providers who said they could provide DSL to our area. After *months* of going back and forth with *several* people...or rather, after months of contacting them about the status of my order, and getting maybe a 10% reply rate at best, we finally gave up and signed up with Zyan Communications around 3/99. The people at Flashcom act like they just don't care. We even signed a contract back in 8/99 and never bothered to cancel it. At least they didn't ever bill us for anything, but neither did anyone ever call asking about it.

Appx. 2 months ago I called Flashcom to have DSL installed. The sale went off without a hitch of course. Since then Covad has sent Bell Atl. to my house 3 times without notifing me. Today 8/23/99 they are on their way to my house again, despite my telling Covad 4x last that I would not be home till tommorrow. Flashcom in all of this has been no help whatsoever. Both parties keep asking for my E-Mail Address but I never get a response from anyone. Today I cancelled my order. Does anyone know who could do this job on a timely basis. If so please let me know. I had a customer order a DSL line from Flashcom, and he called me to set up his router. Since their tech support was unwilling/unable to help him, I fixed him up. Since he had all the right IP addresses, it was easy, and the speed was impressive...so I ordered some for my home.

So I called up and ordered a 384/384 line, decided not to go with the 2 yr plan, and paid the $100. Covad set it up with Pacific Bell to install the line about 4 weeks down the road, with Covad to follow a week later. PacBell was early, so I emailed Covad and the guy was out the next day. Unfortunately, he managed to wrangle the IP address out of the Covad team, but that was all. I fudged some DNS numbers to get me through the weekend.

Unfortunately, the 5250 bridge that I got was bad. I waited for 30 minutes to get tech support, the guy was harried and not much help. 9:00 pm that night, someone called and did some "tests" and sure enough, it didn't work.

The next day (at night again) the tech said Covad wanted to do some test, and sure enough, it didn't work. Covad was scheduled to come out two days later...no show. I complained to Flashcom (after 20 minutes of advertising) and they had no idea that Covad was scheduled or who I was.

Covad was supposed to come out the next day...no joy.

    I called a supervisor...no call back.

I called again 4 hours later, insisted that I get a live supervisor, and she said Covad would be out the next day.

This time, Covad was early! Gave me a new box and it's been off to the races ever since. I'm tickled pink about the speed. The bridge seems to be adequate.

One of the first things I did as check out this site, and see all the negative things people were writing about Flashcom. Gulp. But it seems that the CA segments are pretty stable (Thank God that I am no longer in a GTE area!)

In summary, I agree that Tech support is a joke at Flashcom. Reliability seems good. Speed is all that I could hope for for $50/month. Fortunately, I didn't really need any "support", just numbers/equipment. It takes forever to get to tech support anyway, and half the time the email support is down/full/???. But if you email them in the middle of the night, you usually get a speedy response of "I don't know." Newsgroup access seems good, and the speed is still pretty cool. (And I did get the DNS numbers eventually).
