This review is for Clear 4G not the old service, never had that.
First I found out Clear was available in Las Vegas. WTF is that? Ohh Wimax internet with affordable pricing! Neat. The only deal killer off the bat is the horrible rep Clearwire has. Geez! Sign 2 year contract with them? I must be nuts.
Nah, I've done it before (current longtime and HAPPY vonage/t-mobile customer among other things), couldn't afford the $115 for setup if I didn't have a contract, so I just went the contract route.
Where to start? Since the service had JUST come out, Clear had nothing on their website about sales locations, the phone support said they'd ship me a modem since they didn't have any offices. On google maps, there was a (long defunct) Clearwire office, then I found out on craigslist that Clear had JUST opened the kiosk in a local mall.
I went there, about 4 people standing around taking the sales person's attention, he didn't even notice me so I just sat on the kiosk until he did (lol). In the mall they wee getting 1 bar of reception on their home modem, but the sales person assured me I would be "pleased when you get home and plug it in" - took less than 5 minutes to get signed up, but they do require the first month's payment in advance (and from there on, it's automatic on your bank card).
I got home, plugged it in, and I was indeed pleased. Again, no real need to do anything, the modem just fired up, I got online, and a day or two later it gave me a sign up screen (the internet was usable the whole time, though!)
It speed tests anywhere from 2.5mbps (rare) to 10mbps! Not bad for paying for 3! It's solid as all get out too, only thing is mine would drop out a few times between 3AM and 5AM every single day.
Still have it, I LOVE it.

"Anyone Else Have Problems With the Upgrade To Clear?"
| Pre Sales Information: Install process: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)
|
I have been using clearwire for almost exactly one year and have been very happy with the service. I live about five miles from the nearest tower (located in Sedro Woolley, WA) and with the modem on my roof I can reliably get between 1 and 3 bars of signal strength. The DL speeds will vary from 300-2000 kbps while the UL speed is almost always 256 kbps. I have the 1.5 mbit service so I am pretty happy with the results especially since I have no other options for high speed access. The connection is negatively impacted by heavy rain and snow... but for the most part, like 95% of the time, I have a good connection.
So... along comes the wimax upgrade offer from clear. More speed at the same price seems like a good deal to me. So get the new modem, install it in the same position as the existing modem and get zero signal. I wander all over my roof with the modem looking for any sign of a signal and get nothing. Bummer.
Does anyone know how the source signal strength of the wimax compares to that of their existing service? I have yet to call clearwire to see if the wimax service has even been turned on in my area yet.
What have other people's experiences been like with this upgrade process?
thanks

| I've got the same problem I've been experiencing the same difficulty. At our house, we live about 5 miles away from the closest tower on Guemes Island, WA, and for the last two years we've had a decent connection of around 1.2-1.5 MB/s (which would occasionally dip to 0.4 MB/s, causing frustrations...) with the old modem, usually getting between 1 and 3 bars in the best location in our house. Then, we got the new modem, and we experienced the same problem you have. It couldn't find a signal in the same place as the old modem, and it couldn't find a signal at any other window in the house. In fact, we found out that we could possibly get a signal of 1-2 bars at one place on the roof, but we're gonna have to build some sort of shelter for it if we plan on having it out there, exposed to the elements, which raises all kinds of problems.
Actually, our neighbors are going through the same problems, and while they used to get 4 bars in one location of their house with the old modem, the new modem gives them 1 bar in a different location, and speeds that aren't as good as the previous modem.
I don't know what's going on. Right now, we still have one more month of Clearwire with the old modem, but after that, I don't know what we're going to do. It seems like this 'upgrade' is just worse service so far.

I'm confined to a hospital where I can't exactly have my own service hooked up. I was happy Clear was around, as I'm a gamer and I've used 3G before (such as Sprint Wireless) and the latency was horrible. With Clear I'm getting the full broadband experience including speed upto 9Mbps, and latency as low as 60ms to west cost servers. I was annoyed that they have priced the same service differnetly depending on the modem you choose. Theoretically you can use the home modem everywhere service is offered, same as the mobile option, yet they charge $20 more per month if you want something powered directly by the USB bus.. The home modem came fully firewalled by default and I couldn't receive any incoming connections, and the modem was password protected. Clear wouldn't give me the modem password and required that I call to have only select ports opened up. I found out the password is just generic "motorola" and the modem can be set up for DMZ which forwards all ports.
By the way, my extra awesome results with Clear might not be typical. My modem receives a full 5 light signal, and I was informed by Clear that I sit between two very close towers. I also live above all surrounding buildings and trees and have a direct line-of-sight to the towers, and the building allows exellent wireless penetration.

I got the 4G Clear usb dongles on a $55/month plan (no contract). The only difference between contract and pay-per-month is that they'll wave the $35 signup fee if you sign up for two years -- not worth giving up my freedom for.
So far, speeds have been as advertised, the setup was smooth, everything works as advertised. Haven't tried the fringes of the footprint yet, will report on that later. The dongle is too big, it really sticks way out. I'll solve that by using a USB extension cable, so I can hide the dongle behind my PC. Other than that, nothing bad to report. Pings are 100, speeds are 6 to 7 Mbits down and .5 Mbit up.
I had read the avalanche of bad reviews on Clear, but decided to take a chance anyway since they were about Clear's non-4G network.

This is a re-edit of my old review, so the first couple replies have nothing to do with this rant.
The Clearwire commercials that premiered today piss me off. It advertises downloading music, uploading video and implies streaming video.
I am sorry, whenever I do any of those things, I get my connection shut down. And I am sure that is the case with most if not all you also. Are they just outright lying now? I guess so.

| Math is off Your math is wrong on the time estimates on the download
If you are subscribed for the 1.5med down plan you max download is 187.5kbps @25 megs that would take you about 2.5 mins... but if your only getting 1meg down then you max down is 125kbps so @ 25 megs that would take 3:20 ( three minitues and 20 seconds)
Dial up speed connected at the max of 56K (unlikely) 7kbps down so 25 megs would take you over 1 hour.
Dont believe me then look online at any download calculator »www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculat···ator.php

| Re: Math is off Thank you. =) This actually does prove my math to be off. The results however, ARE less than that I had thought they were, but still far less than acceptable. While I thought that I was being pwn'd by 1/50, I now know I am being ONLY pwn'd by 1/12.5. I am still being pwn'd. By a lot. While the initial math was wrong, the results are the same. itunes, a completely, and in my opinion, far to legal, (as it revels in its legality in an open source world), is still forced to be bitch to clearwire. Why you ask? That is for you to decide. However, if I were to subscribe to clearwires music service, do you really think I would have to worry about (what has not been illustrated to be) twice dial up speed? In a world that starts at 30X that? | |

I went with clearwire for they stated they were going to release Wi-MAX in January of 2009. So I wanted to get in the low price $30 month for life of 1.2 mbps down 400k up. The Wi-MAX never came to pass. Now the word is November of 2009. They say speeds will be about 3 mbps down to about 10 to 15 mbps down. No price known yet. If you're a consumer of Internet that's ok. But if your producing content that is too slow. Not when you can get FIOS at 20 mbps down and 20 mbps up $70 I think we are in an age of content consumers becoming content producers.

| Horrible Customer Service! I had clearwire for about 3 years. BAD IDEA! It worked great for a while and then started to lose service a little bit everyday. Trying to get help....FORGET IT! That was hell, the people were very rude and would keep you on the phone for hours on end. The last of my horrible adventure pushed me over the edge. I called because my internet completely stopped working. I called in and it took about 2 hours for the guy to finally tell me that my modem was the problem. I thought, okay whatever send me a new one. When they sent me the new one, they charged me $12.42 for shipping! What the heck? That wasn't my fault the modem wasn't working...but whatever. Hooked up the new modem and it still didn't work! Called back, and the guy said that there was something wrong with my computer. My answer was I don't think so....seeing that I can access at least 6 other wireless networks! After all the hassle with being on the phone and getting nowhere I finally decided to say screw it and cancel my account. To my surprise that was hell also! Canceling service should be easy, but not with them. I had to talk to about 5 people just to get it canceled, and every person asked me about 3 times if I would like to give it just one more try. UGH....SO frustrating! Finally got it canceled and then they told me that I would get the money back for the modem that I had to pay for, here it is 2 weeks later and I haven't got anything back! I finally called today and told them that I needed that money back NOW since that wasn't my fault. They agreed and said that I would get the money back in 5-6 days. The final question I had was since I didn't have a contract why I was not getting my money back for the half of the month that my internet didn't work. They told me that there was no prorating, so I couldn't get the money back. THAT IS CRAP! I just paid you for internet that isn't working and I can't use? Forget talking to managers...they are flat out RUDE! Needless to say after talking to about 4 different people I am not getting money back for the time that I didn't have internet. This is such poor customer service! Do not go with this internet service...you will just get screwed over in the end! | |

| I agree the customer service is extremely poor. I travel a lot with stays in various cities for two to three months at a time. I thought I could simply bring my CrearWire modem when traveling. Thus a purchased a modem and got the M2M so I could not pay for it when I'm at home with my fiber connection. I went through 3 people before I could Cancel my service and was warned that there might be a $50 change to open a new account. This just floored me, I just wanted the account put on hold (turned off) for a couple of months. To do that, they wanted a $19 processing fee plus $10 a month that it was on hold (Yeah, like I'm going to pay them for nothing). I'm a business consultant. I do not need the Online Gaming or streaming performance that other require. This was a nice solution for me but I refuse to support companies with such poor business model since it will be a miracle if they are able to stay in business the way they are going at things. Luckily I ended up canceling my service the day prior to a new month. | |

The only two options I had were the cheaper 2 year contract or the slightly more expensive 1 year contract. I had heard mixed reviews about Clearwire so I chose the 1 year contract. I chose Clearwire because DSL is not available in my area and I didn't want to pay the very expensive rates which Comcast cable charges for internet only without cable tv. I am looking forward to the year being up and I have only had it for 1 month.
Clearwire is easy to install. But it is important to place it in a window facing the cell towers otherwise I get no signal. There are only 2 rooms in my house which face the cell towers and only one of them is convenient to placing my desktop computer. Just about anything interferes with the signal. According to Clearwire interference can be caused by trees, bushes, and even gas filled windows. Their signal can't pass through modern double-paned gas filled windows? Give me a break! They certainly didn't tell me that over the phone when they were selling it to me.
Now that it's set up there are times of the day when I do get a signal of 1.5 Mbps which they advertise. But those times are rare. Most of the time I get a signal of about .27 Mbps up to about .50 Mbps. I'd be better off having a dial-up phone modem.
Sure they're inexpensive and easy to install but their connection speeds are terrible. Stay away from Clearwire!

| Sounds like User error to me Actually, most frequencies on that bandwidth can't pass through double paned glass, mostly because of the wavelength that is used to provide the speeds at the distance they do.
If you didn't like the service, why didn't you cancel? You had the first seven days to try out the service. Mine works just fine, never had any problems, so I don't know what kind of issues you are having.
And, I guess you have never heard of a wireless router, if you are having to move your desktop to where the modem is. As for speeds... most speed issues I have found are generally caused by software issues on the computer... but I imagine you have probably never really bothered with their tech support, or given them much of a chance. Never had to use them myself, but I hear they are great.
Sounds like most of the problems are user error.

| Re: Sounds like User error to me I am not sure if you work for clear Wire or not, and maybe you get great service where you are at but most people that get the Clear Wire service are not satisfied with Clear Wire's poor quality of service.
I am a current Clear Wire customer and know exactly how the company works because I have friends who actually work for Clear Wire. The service was the best when I first signed up about two and a half years ago. Now the service is marginal at best. I am only .68 miles from the Clear Wire Tower MRC010 and I am getting very sporadic service on the download side (avg .86Mbps) but the upload side of things is very consistent. I will be leaving Clear Wire once my contract is up. I renewed at the $29.99 for life for one year and that will be up pretty soon.
As to your comment that "most speed issues I have found are generally caused by software issues on the computer" is just a bonehead statement. From this statement I suspect that you are a Clear Wire employee. Either way, anyone on this site worth their salt in computer technology are just laughing at this ID10T statement.
I have given level 1 and 2 the chance to prove to me that they are worth my money, some are very nice and do their best and I appreciate this. The thing is, I have ran programs to see why the speeds change so much (especially when watching video or downloading a Linux distro) and I find that Clear Wire is in the practice of throttling the speeds. I even got the level 2 tech to admit it and soon after that (I got his personal email) he was let go.
Clear Wire is a very dishonest company that will not last as long as it keeps up its deceptive practices. In fact in April a class action law suit has been filed and I look forward to see justice done for those of us who know our computers (obviously better than you do) and we will be able to show the rest of the ISPs that want to follow Clear Wire's business practices, beware we are going to hold you accountable.

| Clear Wire's problem also is that they only give you seven days to try their service before you are slaved into a contract that you will not get out of without paying top dollar for a bottom dollar service.
Problems with Clear Wire:
1). Clear Modem is poor quality and only uses 10Mbps NIC Port. Other ISPs use either 100Mbps or gigabit ports.
2). Anything beyond 1 mile from tower service degrades tremendously and if there are any line of site obstacles then you will see your speeds drop dramatically.
All in all Clear Wire was once a good service and now is just over subscribing the sectors and therefore your QOS is crap and they know it but either charge you ridiculous prices for non-contract service are you will need to use a contract to get the better price for the same slow speeds. AT&T offers 6Mbps/785 and no contract for only $35.00 per month for as long as you use their service. I pay almost as much for 1.5/256. This is NOT worth it.

My wife and I have a strong desire to lose Qwest (our local phone line provider) for good in the future due to past bad experiences with them and simply due to what we view as a very over-priced phone line. With that being the case, DSL was not really a long-term option for us as they require that land line to be in place. Satellite options seem a bit 'hokey' in our area and the cheapest one we could find was $50 a month for pretty slow download rates. Cable is an option but we have our issues with the local cable provider as well and do not have TV service through them - so no bundling discounts to make it affordable.
With all this being said, wireless seemed to be the best route for us and Clearwire has been available in the Boise market for quite some time. The local staff was pretty knowledgeable to be honest and were very patient answering all of my questions. They let me "demo" a modem at home for a few nights before I signed any contracts and I thought that was a very good thing. I was able to test signal strength and download speeds without them having my credit card number yet!
Installation was a breeze and I was up and running with service in a matter of minutes - this has to be a huge advantage that Clearwire has over most other broadband providers. Using the Speakeasy test - I showed that I was getting the download and upload speeds that were advertised. (And this was with at times only two of the 5 signal strength lights lit up....) I ran the tests at all different times of the day as well and did not see any major differences. I subscribed to the 768 Kps service and am consistently getting speeds that are faster than that.
I have only had the service now for a few days, but I cannot find anything wrong with it at this point. I will post updates if the "bottom falls out" but at this point I would highly recommend this service.
2/13/2007 - Review Update -
I had a basic question for Clearwire regarding using their service as part of a wireless network at my home and a particular router setting. I opened a ticket on my Clearwire member page and received an e-mail response within just a day or two. I then received a phone call from them a day later wanting to make sure that my question had been answered. Not blazing fast response times - but I was impressed with the follow through on their part.
4/17/2007 - Review Update
Third full month with consistent service from Clearwire. My "trial" is now over with this service and so my account has been reverted back to a 768K max download, but I consistently get better speeds than that. Still very happy with this service to this point.
8/2/2007 - Review Update
Going on eight months now with Clearwire service here in the Boise, ID area and am still a VERY satisfied customer. Moved the modem to a window in my den and now consistently have 4-5 lights on the modem at all times with very consistent download speeds and low overall latency. Service has also been working well with a wireless router I installed a few months back and now I have nice wireless service all over my house through Clearwire as well. I have had so much success with the service to this point I am considering adding their VOIP service as well.
1/12/2008 - Review Update
Coming up on my one year anniversary with Clearwire and there is nothing that would make me want to cancel this contract. I am not bound by wires as you guys are with cable and DSL and my download and upload speeds are still VERY consistent and more than really what I am paying for. If there was anything negative to report about this service, I would, but there is absolutely nothing. I almost forget who my provider is (I think that is a high compliment to a service like this) at times because it is always up and always works perfectly. More updates to come.....but still very smooth sailing from this Clearwire customer one year into his service.
1/21/2008 - Review Update
Here is an example of the consistent speeds that I am talking about.....keep in mind I am paying for a 768K downlink and a 256K uplink....

5/20/08 - Review Update
I thought that I would update my review. Still just consistent and top notch connection to Clearwire at this point, speeds a lot of the time are still above what I am paying for and strong signal all of the time. The last 6 months may have been the best of my contract actually - the service and signal strength reliability seem to be improving if anything. I am a big believer in modem positioning, I found a great position for my Clearwire modem in my den and I know I am connecting to the best/closest tower to my house. That is key.
Keep up the good work Clearwire!
2/3/09 - Review Update
My two year contract with Clearwire is at an end this month, without a single outage that I can remember to be completely honest. My Clearwire service continues to be as-advertised, reliable and consistent. Since my contract was expiring, I was given an offer to renew with Clearwire and DOULBE my download speed for the SAME price I am paying now per month. This was an easy decision for me, same bill and twice the speed. This offer from Clearwire has only reaffirmed my belief that they are a top of the line company that provides great service. I will be with Clearwire into the foreseeable future and looking forward to the promise of even faster download speeds being available in my area with the launch of full WiMAX in the near future.
Clearwire has a loyal customer here.

It's in a convenient spot where I have it and so I have pretty much just left it alone. I can put it in the window of my den and get 3 or 4 bars - but then I cannot close the blinds.
I don't think that the number of lights on the modem are an indication of the speed of data transfer that you will get to be honest, they are simply signal strength. So with one bar or five bars I would get the same general download speeds, just with one bar I would be in more jeopardy of losing my signal all together. That's not an official stance, but it seems to make sense to me. I have had one bar before and had blazing fast download speeds.

| Re: Clearwire -- Response Thanks for the info on the lights. I normally get 5 lights and start panicking when it drops to 4, and start chopping trees and demolishing homes when it drops to 3. However, you're correct about the signal strength and download speed -- little or no correlation. But if I adjust my modem for 2 lights, it takes an extra bit of time in establishing a solid transfer (it pings the tower several times) but locks on and works. But my tower is over 4.5 miles away -- maybe that makes a difference.
See you.

You bring up a good point regarding signal strength that I had not considered, if I had 5 lights (or even 4) on all the time I might have lower ping times or latency when accessing site. I will give this a shot, put the modem in my window and see what happens. Thanks for the tip.

| Service really isn't that bad.... A couple weeks ago I decided to give ClearWire a try. We are in Richmond VA and the service was just launched here. So far, so good! The speed is acceptable, even with just 1 or 2 bars. One call to customer service for a question about the service got me a friendly, knoledgeable person. Give it a try! Just make sure you are in the service area. | |
