They have a $200 cancellation fee which they fail to mention and won't let you out of. It's the only way they can make money, because the service is horrible. Customer service is the worst I've ever experienced.

Essentially, Clearwire was my only option for an ISP that I could take with me when changing apartments. I'm currently a student and living on the cheap, so I've gotten used to moving when an apartment ups its rent prices or when a roommate doesn't work out. Cheap living means cheap apartments which usually don't mean free internet. And with the coverage area all over where I've already spent 2 years (and where I'll be spending another 2 more) to finish my education, it only made sense to go with a more mobile setup. And for the most part its been tolerable.

Sure, I could harp on Clearwire for making me spend hours waiting for tech support (at least once), but when you get down to the knitty gritty, there haven't been any problems that I wouldn't expect from a wireless service; including but not limited to: poor connectivity, reset connections, poor MMO experiences, jittery streaming, ect. The thing to remember here is that its mainly a service for web browsing that power users should steer clear of. Stick to copper or fibre if you know what ssh, hp-ux or ICMP mean. But for email and basic browsing, its acceptable. THEY WILL BOTHER YOU ABOUT SUSTAINED TRAFFIC. But be aware that to get in trouble, you have to have a heavy/constant traffic flow over a 5 day average, stay below that and your golden.

All in all, I wish there was a cheaper alternative that offered the same flexibility as Clearwire with improved stability, but there aren't too many horse-riding beggars in the residential ISP arena.

I got clearwire 2yrs ago because it was cheaper than other providers in my area. It started out good but don't call into their customer service and expect speedy or friendly service. Every time I have needed to call-in it has been a minimum of 20 minutes plus 15 min of that will be spent on hold and you will be lucky if the representatives check back with you. Then when they do get back to you your lucky if they answer the question correctly. If you need to trouble shoot get ready to go though the same steps about 3 times and verify your account with three different people because they do not communicate to the next person what you have done. They different departments have no clue what the hell is going on with each other even though they make you think they do and keep you on hold for 15 minutes. I would rather talk to a wall rather than to call their customer service. In light of all this I decided to renew my contract because I did not want to go through the hassle of getting new service and a new definition of ignorance arose within their customer service.

I decided to take their $50 AMEX gift card instead of their 29.99 plan well I received 2 emails confirming my choice and was told that I will get them within 2-4 weeks. 3 weeks past and I decided to call them to check on my gift card because of their track record, hoping it would improve but hoping for that is like hoping for world piece. The first time I called I asked the rep if they were in the Financial department and got dead silence until I made a remark "I guess not" to get the rep saying "I did not know that was a question" I don't know how much clearer I could have made the question. I than waited for 30 min for him to tell me he didn't see the order and was going to file a Help desk ticket and will email me what he put in the email. After reading the email I realized that he put information in their that he did not say to me so I called back for another 20 min call. At the end of that call I get I should find out the answer in a couple of days about the ticket, in other words "I have no idea what is going on either". After reading the email later that day it said that I decided to take the discount on the monthly charges and I will not receive my gift card. I called very pissed-off and after staying on hold for 10 min the rep transferred me to the promotions department, which should have been done 2 calls ago but wasn't. She kept me on hold for another 20 minutes to tell me that they will go ahead and give me the gift card, like it was a nice jester from them, and set my monthly bill back to what it was. When I asked what they were going to do to compensate me for my hassle and time she said "nothing because they gave me credits for last month", which they took back.

This company does not want to take responsibility for their actions and act like you owe them something because they are giving you service. I should have learned from my issues in the past with them. Getting anything accomplished with them is imposable and I can't wait till my contract is up so I can dump them.

    Clearwire smear campaign

Well, well, well, It seems to me that a lot of people here are forgetting one simple fact. You bought the service....
You signed the contract you didn't read because you were in a rush to get home and watch 24.
Clearwire offers a simple and affordable product that works AS ADVERTISED. Did the sales guy lie to you about something? Maybe you should visit that sales guy...
Or, perchance, there may be an "LBO" around your service area? Local...Business....Office......People will do a lot more for you when you're THERE IN PERSON.
As for tech support goes....YOU PLUG IT IN.That's pretty freakin simple.

    YOU BOUGHT IT

I have the Premium Package that promises 2 meg download and I get it.

So I cannot complain , latency is bad and they do block Peer to peer downloads

It seems that they have an auto blocker or a "cap" for sites like Limewire etc, they do not block other FTP sites that are less popular, but music is harder to obtain for me now , minor deal , I just work around it. I can actually get fairley good speed with Bit Torrent-- So That problem is solved , so all in all It works and is better than most things Ive had here , Verizon gave me a 30 day trial and then billed me 9 grand!

    Not Clear Wire

    @comcast.net

Not Clear - Canceling is a HUGE hassle

If you are ever in an area that doesn't get good reception here are your options:

    1. Try to sell you modem online at eBay and have someone take over your contract.

    2. Go through a multi-step, multi-hour process of confirming that you don't have clear reception. The 1st operator makes you go from room to room, even your bathroom to see if you have reception.

    b. Then once you pass that test, you wait to get to technical support and they make you do the same processes.

    c. Then you get transferred to yet another department who schedules a 'free' technical support call to your house to confirm that you get sub-standard reception.

    d. The technical support person comes to your house and goes through the same process. I was told that I could put it outside my Redmond, WA house. Yeah. In the rain and wind in a little plastic box.

In essence it is a long drawn out hassle to cancel with these folks.

So if you move or if your neighbor's trees grow to high and your service sucks, will be prepared for a long, drawn out hassle of a service.

Well, I went from using Comcast's 4mb internet to Clearwire's standard level (unsure exactly what it is). But I can get about 150kb/s on a file download temporarily (more on that later). The reason for my shift was purely because I moved in with my parents so I could commute to a nearby college. As a person who often downloads/watches TV episodes online/plays internet games (especially Counter-Strike etc...) this ISP has been HORRIBLE! I can understand when they limit my torrent downloads, but when I need to download a patch for World of Warcraft and it takes me twice as long as it should because of bandwidth limiting -- how annoying! Even when I do play Counter-Strike I usually start with a respectable ping (latency) but after a few minutes it becomes irradic and unreliable. I would not recommend Clearwire to anyone who actually uses the internet.

I suppose it is OK if you're one to simply check email, browse the Web. But don't expect much when clicking on streaming files, content rich pages, or anything that demands what your connection should be capable of. Bottom line: get it for granny -- no-one else.

    A Bad Situation, but....

    First, sorry about your sister.

Now to the point of your message: this all sounds like a communication problem between you and Clearwire, and not a reliability and quality issue. I would probably blame Clearwire first for not understanding your actions, which do not seem malicious. However, you may not have explained your situation very well either, and they thought you might be trying to jerk them around.

In my opinion, Clearwire is a good Internet provider and as with ALL other providers, you've got to understand the contract, which is not that hard.

    Best of luck.

    Re: A Bad Situation, but....

You seem to be someone for Clerwire for sure.

Clearwire internet connection is the WORST one I have ever seen or experienced. The network speed is LOUSY; the support guys take you for a ride when you want to disconnect the service. A BIG WARNING TO EVERYONE TRYING TO GET CLEARWIRE: CLEARWIRE SUCKS. BIG TIME!

This service sucks. The connection speed is even slower than DSL. The contract is set up in a strange way. The contract is a SCAM. I do not recommend for watching videos or playing games online. I can only get 3 lights,I'm lucky if I get 4.Road Runner & Embarq are better services.

Don't get Clearwire unless you need it.

I was able to try Clearwire when taking a trip and have to say, I loved it. I expected a complete wireless internet service provider to act much like a Cell Phone provider (slow and unstable). The speed was quick and I never lost signal. It was like having DSL (not cable speeds).

I was able to link up no matter where we took the laptop in town.
