I signed up with Velcom after deciding that I could get more bang for the buck from Velcom then with Rogers. Velcom allows servers and gives an option to be assigned a static ip which was a plus for me. Their tech support is good and has been quick to answer any tickets that I've opened so far. They could improve on the information given to new signups.
The only disappointment I had so far was with the email part of the service. Web mail is harder to login to when compared to other services like hotmail (Requires 5 steps to login) and standard features like auto responder, email forwarding is missing.
One last thing I'll mention is that I did originally have a problem with the dsl speed when I first signed up with Velcom. Velcom was quick to acknowledge what the problem was and provided Velcom users with a 3rd party dsl login to use until the issues between Bell and Velcom was fix. Not all isp's would have done that so I give them points in that area as well.

I have used their login account for three days, their speed is like acanac, bell and teksavvy, good. I have no experience about their tech support and order process anyway.

| Velcom comments Hello Westvv,
I don't really find this as a fair review as for one you only have a DSL Login account with us. The slow speeds may be due to your actual SYNC rate which is directly from Bell and which is something your provider should be looking into for you.
A DSL Login account will not give new speeds or better speeds if your actual sync rate is 1728/800 for example or 3008/800 from Bell's end.
In addition, if you never used our tech support how can you rate it and what made you rate our sales a 60 out of 100 just curious as our sales staff always gets great reviews.
Regards,
Matthew | |

velcom's speed is good, I know and understand my SYNC rate with Bell DSLAM. About the pre-sales inoformation, I think the main point is velcom web needs to be improved. Totaly, I think velcom is a good service provider. BTW, as we discussed in forum regarding to the subnet issue, I want to ask if velcom want to change to some other subnets? why not apply one or two clear /19 or /20 instead of tons of /24 subnets? Just curious.

I was comparing them to Teksavvy, went with Velcom due to the quickness they replied to my emails. I ordered the 5mbit unlimited DRY DSL, and it was installed quickly. The order process was quick, and the gentleman was very friendly, the setup on the other hand was non existant.

| Thank you Hello,
Thank you for your comment and honest feedback. If you don't mind me asking why did you rate us so low for the install and co field?
Your service was setup within 4 business days which is pretty much the standard and yourself you said we were quick to reply to all tickets, emails and for the setup of your account .
Just curious so we may know where to improve.

| It was just that there was no information passed to me. I didn't have any information sent to me, on what I was suppose to set settings to in the MODEM. I've never used DSL before, and I could imagine someone like my father not being able to set anything up at all. I didn't know to set VPI/VCI, I had to call, and get that information.
Overall, good service | |

| Re: Thank you I phoned Velcom customer service 5 times and got the same agent for 4 of the 5 calls. Small outfit, so I guess I can understand that, but I must be honest that I was less than impressed with the service I received prior to me getting my line up and running.
Now...I will see if that improves when I go live tonight, but so far, I am leaning on going to another provider after trying the service for 1 month. That is, unless the speed, consistency and uptime remain solid during this same period. We shall see.

* Minor issues with setup and email were quickly resolved. I am encountering speed fluctuations during evening hours (8:30pm to Midnight) likely due to traffic problems.
Actual causes have yet to be identified. Apparently it is a Bell problem. I don't have the expertise to understand everything about bandwidth and what I can expect from my 5Mb service. In any event, it beats Sympatico!

I switched to Velcom in early April 2007.
My previous ISP could/would not provide fixed ips or allow servers. Velcom allows servers and supplied a block of 8 ips at a reasonable price, without hassle.
Technically they deliver what they advertise, speed is good with very little variance.
Up time is good, any planned outages are well advertised and take place as stated. There have been a couple of occasions when things took longer than expected, but these are the exception not the rule.
The sales rep (Matt) recommended that I purchased a Thomson ST516 DSL modem/router at the time I switched ISPs as my previous modem could not be reconfigured (my fault, lost password). After reading up on the unit I decided to upgrade to a ST546 which they swapped without any hassle. In retrospect this was a mistake, as trying to configure st546 in anything but simplest fashion is a nightmare.
Velcom's only weakness, and this may be more a comment on the ST546, technical expertise on this piece of equipment.
Overall Velcom is a good, stable ISP - DSL supplier.

I've been using the Velcom DSL login in addition to my regular DSL provider for the past couple of weeks. I called in to set up the login account and within 30 minutes I had an e-mail confirming my user ID and password. Shortly after that I received a follow-up telephone call from Matt at Velcom to confirm that everything was working satisfactorily. Over the first weekend I had some e-mail issues and contacted tech support several times by e-mail. My questions were answered promptly and politely and the problem was fixed quickly. The Velcom connection seems quite reliable and I can't think of anything to complain about.
The customer service console on the Velcom website is easy to use and allows you to check/change your account information and add e-mail addresses which is a nice feature.
Anyone looking for a DSL provider should consider Velcom.

I subscribed to this alternative access on a quarterly basis but could have asked to try them for one month only if i had prefered. Their answers were quick and honest, there's been no issues as long as i'm concern and it's a shame they don't advertise this LogIn service outside the local boundaries since it's a hard-to-find service in my Province!!!
I didn't evaluate my LogIn account long enough to be able to rate them accurately but nothing is perfect in a real world so i guess 4 over 5 is reasonable. More investigation would be required but i noticed that latency is around 50 ms, quite a fair deal when i consider that their signal is going thru Québec city before it heads back to the west...

| Update Hi Matt,
I wish i could have done justice to VelCom, actually; i've been having line issues lately but see my tests:
»/testhistory/1267354/b1adc
Latency seems nice considering the circumstances, not to mention that my VelCom access is capable of better speeds than some results appear to suggest. I'm just hoping that the reader will consider the intermittent noise issues i'm facing and not only the raw numbers.
Salutations, ;-D

| Re: Update Hello Bicephale,
I've been following your thread in the Canadian Broadband section. We have quite a large user base in both Montreal city and Quebec and many people are happy with both the speeds and routing.
I hope you're off to a wonderful week.
