I placed my order shortly after putting in my Velcom cancellation order with Bell Canada. It probably would have been a good idea to wait a month, as clearly they are new to FTTN, and that combined with constantly changing rates made it an interesting process. I put my order, and by the next day the rates had already changed (decreased). I'm not very patient, so after waiting a few days for order confirmation I put in a ticket to check if they had received my order. Then the dialog started. Back and forth, one question at a time, they learned exactly what I wanted. It was pretty much the same information I provided them in the web form. At first I thought they didn't trust their own web form, but later I realized the problem was simply that the FTTN service was so new, and with everything changing almost by the day the sales people preferred just to rebuild the order as if I had never filled out a form.

Eventually, they we set-up an install date, and later they called to confirm. I wasn't happy that the soonest they could install was April 1st, 2013, and my Bell service was terminating on the March 29th, 2013, but I decided I could live with it. At 9:40 on the day of the install my service started working. At 3PM Bell Canada showed up to rewire the outside line. (Apparently I was still on my old dry-loop. Within minutes after Bell left a second person showed up to install the modem. I showed him it was working that was done.

I imagine, as a customer I'm probably Velcom's worst nightmare. With all the negative reviews here I was very nervous and ended up submitting about six tickets in the month waiting for the install. Most are things they probably would have corrected on their own, had I just been patient. In the end though, this is still much better than dealing with Bell...

Now that the service is up and running at 25/7 speeds I'll try not to be a nervous customer and just sit back and enjoy.

- - -

The connection was up for just two days and now it has been down for three days. The modem is acting like it is not plugged into a phone line. Looks like it was a Bell Canada problem. Velcom submitted the ticket with Bell as soon as I called them, and Bell Canada actually came on the weekend to fix the issue. When I was a direct customer with Bell they never came on the weekend to fix problems. If I don't see any more outages in the next month, I'll bump the reliability rating back up.

I got in on the VDSL2 25/7 package with them since Bell was having the no install fee special this month. CSR's were very easy to reach, the install went smoothly, can't complain about anything other than Bell sending me a used Cellpipe that they didn't even clean up, but Velcom has no control over that. They have the best pricing for VDSL2 packages and for a single static.

Elaboration on the con: I am not worried about going over the 400GB through my own usage (we have yet to go over 230 and my wife streams a lot), but I decided to run a server from home and botnet attacks can rack up the usage. Some other ISP's have a hard cap as to how much they can ding you for overages, which Velcom doesn't.

Velcom's overage cap

According the Velcom's website, this is the overage cap:
quote:
$0.25c/GB overage. Max of $25.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't see that on their site and the sales rep didn't know about the cap when I asked.

I had Residential 5mb DSL line that was un-capped.
Now they switched it to 6mbit 400gb cap.

can't complain about the service, whenever i had to call, tech support was helpful.
there was one time that the internet was down & when I tried calling them no one would answer.

but besides that the up time is great. and speed is great.

Signed up with Velcom back in 2009 (a bit over two years ago).

I have been with their 5Mbit service and I get this speed 99% of the time. Not too fast, but it is reasonably good for my needs. (Though I would like 10Mbit!) They do support MLPPP, so I could bond two lines together if I needed to.

They are fairly reliable, though a few times a year they experience some transitory technical problem (PPPoE server problem), but downtime is rarely more than an hour.

Technical support and ticketing is superb! These guys really know what they are doing and have a phenomenal system.

Ping times are usually less than 50ms.

UPDATE 27/04/2011: Uptime has been getting noticeably worse. Sometimes their PPPoE authentication server goes down, and sometimes their routing gets confused, leaving some sites inaccessible. This is starting to be a bi-weekly occurrence.

Velcom offers exactly what it advertises, a DSL connection with unlimited bandwidth for a pretty cheap price.

Many upsides: No cap, free MLPPP, cheapest service I've come across, sales is helpful.

The downside is that should any problems arise, expect to deal with it with almost no help. Tech Support is the worst I've come across out of ALL telecommunication companies (including ISPs and telephone service providers); for example, even though they advertise a 24-hour tech support, there are nights when you call in the AM times (EST) you'll be forever stuck in first position in the call waiting line, because there's actually no one working at the moment. Even if you do connect to a tech support, you can instantly tell right away they're all outsourced and follow a very lame script. If you have connection problems, they'll ask you to connect directly to the modem, even if your router setup has worked for years and haven't been changed, and whether the DSL light is flashing or completely on, and once past that stage, they'll just open a ticket with Bell. I've also had some intermittent issues with the service in the past, and tech support had been completely useless. Sometimes (actually, all the time) I just feel like switching completely to TekSavvy and cough up the extra 10-20 dollars/mo

Anyway, if tech support was revamped, then Velcom would get full ratings from me. Connection issues arise most of the time, from my experience, because of Bell screwing over the lines.

I'm pleased with my selection. Great bandwidth limit, decent speeds (4.2Mbps) unthrottled with MLPPP. Would purchase again and have recommended to others.

June 25, 2010

So I have cancelled my account with Velcom. A couple of issues:

It seemed like every 3 days or so, I would have to disconnect and reconnect to their service via my router. The router said it was connected but no web pages would load and could not ping any sites. Maybe it was a problem with their DNS servers. Not a big issue for me, but a hassle for my wife.

Second, they could not confirm a receipt of my payment and canceled my internet. Even though it was paid on time and I gave them a bank confirmation number. I could not get a hold of their billing department and they never returned my emails. This was the main reason for cancelling.

Tech support was knowledgeable and friendly.

When I moved to Oakville, I decided I wasn't going to put up with any more cable crap (had Rogers in Mississauga). I looked at Bell, and read terrible reviews, but then CanadianISP showed there were other (cheaper) resellers of DSL, so I decided to go with Velcom, after being promised there wasn't any throttling. After it took Bell 8 days to set up the connection (and three separate failed attempts), the connection was great, and friendly people all around.

But when I heard that Bell was throttling resellers, I genuinely thought I would be making the switch to cable. However, Cogeco (the incumbent carrier in my area) announced extremely low bit caps. I had no choice but to stay with Velcom, as I have, on average, about 240GB/mo network I/O, which would cost me hundreds with Cogeco. However, I'm glad I stayed with Velcom, and as soon as I rewire the phone lines in my house to achieve a passable SNR, I'm sure I'll get even faster speeds.

Some of you may have noticed my rants about TekSavvy charging an extra 4$ a month for MLPPP access and my promise to look for another ISP that would offer MLPPP at no extra charge. Well i didn't have to look far

I signed up with Velcom and i was up and running in a matter of days. I changed my PPPoE account in my router and presto : i was up and running with 10Mbps down and 1.6Mbps up just like i was before with TekSavvy using MLPPP.

Speedtests are consistent at any time of the day and since both my lines sync at 5Mbps, i get full speeds as well just like i used to with TekSavvy. As a bonus, there are no caps ! (for now at least)

The connection is reliable so far and it only froze on me 1 time although i am not 100% sure it was Velcom's fault. I rebooted the router and it was back up.

Overall i'm very happy with Velcom and i recommend them as a solid and free MLPPP alternative ISP.

Ordered it a weak ago and I am getting 3mbps( the max my line can handle) and 250 upload.

I was up and running a couple hours ago and so far so good.

Support is ok, not bad , and not as good as teksavvy

The Price is defiantly worth it, unlimited bandwidth. up to 5mbps speed 800k upload.

I also get the RFD discount which gives me a total price of 29.87

Overall Great service, recommended.
WAY BETTER THAN BELL.

Update: disconnections are GONE, With a combination of moving there servers locally and fixing my telephone line in which bell tech came five times to my house, but i complained to there manager , and a F1 Pair was bad.

I have been TechSavy customer for 4 years, but have to walk away after I moved to my new house. They was seem to unable to solve my connection problems on the new line. To get it fixed I went to the evil Sympatico for 1 month. Line was fixed, but I am being billed for there "services" cancelled 3 month ago ever since

So for 3-4 month I am a Velcome happy customer. Customer support is useful and quick. I had some problem with my IP assigned to other modem in the network. Best part is tech support honestly admit there have a something messed up on there side. I can live with provider which is working on network problem, instead of advising me how to hook modem I been using for 8 years. No stupid "reboot your comp" advices.

Issue was fixed so far. I am getting solid 4200/500

I will definitely stay with this provider, and recommend it to my friends and relatives.

Upd. half year later......same ISP

Hmm I am either lazy or there is not enough competition in this area... Anyway still buying DSL from Velcom.
