I've had Uverse installed at two different locations. The first install went pretty poorly, the service went down after a week and stayed down for a week before a tech came out, who fixed it, but went down again for about another week. It turns out that the high speed data pipe(~25,000mbps) runs on copper for the last ~3000 feet which needs to be top notch to stay up. They finally found a good pair and swapped me over to it and had no problems from then on.

I moved to a new house and moved my service along with me. It went much smoother than the first install, it did go down for about a day, but that was due to the ISPs software, not at&ts hardware. The frustrating thing is that I assumed this was an ISP problem due to the gateway telling me I had DSL synch, but unable to grab an IP...it was a DNS server problem all along..at&t would have saved a truck roll and several calls from me if they had took my advice and made a call to verify what I was saying was true.

I've had 3meg DSL for the past 2 years, I ordered the 6meg package, downloads are faster, MORE than twice as fast from some sights, but it seems a bit more "sluggish" when compared to DSL..even though the speed tests report great pings.

I read about At&T U-verse from emails i had recieved due to the fact that i have AT&T home phone service. After reading about it i decided to go online to at AT&T web site and look a little more about pricing and installation. I decided to go with it did the online order and got hung up on the website so i called and my order was placed but i could never get to the appointment set up part so at 8am Wed i called and 845am Thursday the tech was out for the install. He was there for 3 hrs but i had 3 receivers install and 1 computer hooked up. I have there largest package the U400. I recieved 1 DVR and 2 other HD recievers. My internet package was the Elite package and i speed test it at 9MB down and 1.5MB up. So far i have had no problems with the DVR recordings and i'm more than happy with the 320 plus channels and plus i get $150 in the form of a check or debt card in rebates so i don't have any real complaints at this time but if things change i will update my post. I have had Comcast and it sucks especially if your in a heavily populated area.

Max Internet as opposed to Elite

As far as your internet connection, as I read your review I think you have the Max Tier (10 Mbps down/1.5 Mbps up) as opposed to the Elite Tier (6 Mbps down/1 Mbps up), since you report a speed-test result of 9 Mbps down/1.5 Mbps up.

Welcome to U-Verse! Enjoy!

The loop length at my home is 13000 ft, so I am too far from the CO to get traditional ADSL service. For years I had a symmetrical 144kbps/144 IDSL line from Covad, which is basically a glorified ISDN line. That service was very reliable, but was classified as a business line, and cost $130/month. Needless to say, the speed was insufficient for today's internet.

Then some AT&T representatives knocked on my door, selling U-Verse. Since then, my internet experience has totally changed for the better! The AT&T sales people told me that I had to subscribe to TV service in order to get the internet. I have DirecTV service, and am very happy with it, so I wasn't interested in dropping it. The next day, I called AT&T U-Verse, and they told me that since I cannot get regular AT&T/Yahoo DSL service (too far from the CO), that I was qualified to receive U-Verse internet service without subscribing to the TV service (naked DSL). I was thrilled to learn this! Better yet, I ordered the 10 Mbps/1.5 Max internet tier, and they gave it to me for $55/month, the same price as 6 Mbps regular ADSL service! I placed the order immediately and requested the soonest available installation date. I rate the pre-sales information at 4 stars, since the sales people did not know that my home was outside of the regular DSL service area. If I had not called AT&T the next day, I would have never known that U-Verse internet, without TV, was available for me!

The installation techs arrived right on time. In fact, they had actually started work early, and had already made the necessary changes at the neighborhood VRAD box before they showed up at my house. The installation was extremely quick, and the techs were very professional. They ran CAT-5 from my outdoor telephone box, under the house, and up through the floor to the RG router. The installation took no more than an hour. They powered up the RG. After a few minutes it had updated its software, and the green lights indicated a good connection. I plugged my existing Netgear wireless router into one of the ports of the RG. The RG recognized the configuration as router behind router, and placed itself in DMZ-Plus mode to alleviate that situation. My wireless router now receives a public IP address from the RG. I decided to use my wireless router, rather than the RG built-in wireless, since I have several computers at home, and I didn't want to be limited to 4 IP addresses. Plus, I had read that the range of the RG wireless was not that good. I did a quick speed test, and the results were 9.6 Mbps/1.4. I was off and running!

After the techs left, I logged into the RG and disabled the wireless, since I was not using it. I have had the service for 2 months now, and I am extremely happy. There have been no outages, other than a couple 1-2 second "burps". The RG broadband statistics show a very solid connection, with very few uncorrected DSL blocks. The speed has been very consistent, and does not slow down much, even during peak times of 5 pm - 10 pm. The slowest download speed I have measured was 8 Mbps. Typical speeds always measure 9.6 Mbps/1.4. I have measured 11 Mbps down on a few occasions.

All in all, I am very happy and I'm glad I made the switch. Now, I can enjoy the internet the way I want to....streaming videos, large music file downloads...they all work very well now.

BTW, I should mention that I have had Comcast internet service available in my area for quite some time, even during the time when I had the Covad IDSL line. But I had a bad experience a few years ago with Comcast TV, so I refuse to do business with them. It was worth the wait, and I'm glad there is finally a choice for broadband internet in my neighborhood.

To anyone who is wondering about the "comments" that were posted to my review, please compare the quality of my review to those of the "commenters". Then, tell me who you are going to believe. Worst customer service in industry

The original salesman was great. The original tech was great. From then on, everything went downhill.

First, if you are calling their customer support line, you should know that the number they tell you to call isn't the correct one. The people who answer that line don't know this and will insist that you do not have an account (and will then try to open a new account that has nothing to do with u-verse). Each call I made to their support line took over 1 hour to get the the correct person thanks to the 5 or 6 transfers that I needed to get there.

This amount of time did not change even when I knew it was the wrong number and told the person right away. Despite letting them know, and speaking to a number of managers, the number on the site is still wrong.

If you have a tech come to your house, expect to waste at least 6 hours. I had to call a tech 5 times - so I spent over 30 hours waiting at my house while they tried to figure out what was the matter (the 1st tech did a bad job). This doesn't include the 6 hours on the phone trying to get tech support on the phone.

If you want to add a second account holder (called a sub-account), it doesn't work. The customer support guy (that you wait an hour for) was no help.

The service, when it worked, was great. The channels were clear, the internet service was fast (not as fast as advertised, but ok). Oddly enough for a fiber connection, weather would knock it out. If the service is knocked out, the DVR won't play stored shows.

Easily the WORST customer support I have ever received from anywhere, and I used to be a Comcast customer.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. However, according to the number of negative reviews vs positive reviews on this site, problems with the service or support are not very common.

Another post from an anonymous user, this time from an illiterate Comcast shill. Time to enable the ignore feature. If Comcast is paying you guys to post this garbage, then I suggest you use the money for something you really need, like a High School Equivalence class.

I can see how some paranoid person or otherwise might question your review. However, it sounds to me like you've got a service that's nice, affordable, and as advertised.. And it sounds like you're really STOKED about it!!! Cool, hopefully AT&T will get the ball rolling in my area and I can check them out! Good deal bro, nice review...

First of all, I had a bad experience with ATT Uverse. It's a piece of crap overall. No wonder they offered it to me for a super low price. The internet service had a lot of glitches. , the HD channels didn't look like high definition at all, and they make you think that other cable companies are stealing money from you. It's like, talking crap about your competitor so you can gain revenue.

I discovered that their cable software was made by Microsoft. This explains why I was getting pixelations and freezing menus. The Uverse Advance TV menu have local weather info that is totally useless. Look out your window and you will know what the weather is. A couple of my friends also had Uverse and they didn't like it as well. Their HD was bullsh*t and their so called On Demand was a bullsh*t on-demand. The Uverse video recorder is crap because it doesn't let me watch my recorded shows due to some software/hardware issues.

I had a really bad experience returning the box to Uverse for a replacement. I didn't get to watch TV for 2 weeks because the replacement box isn't in the mail yet.

I cancelled Uverse after 15 days. Some people may like Uverse, but it wasn't for me. Bad tv reception and bad HD quality is not my style. I went back to Comcast because I missed On Demand.

To all those who are commenting on U-Verse TV: Please note that I am reviewing U-Verse naked DSL (FTTN + VDSL), and not TV. For TV, I kept my DirecTV service.

Had existing AT&T DSL. Ordered U-verse online and had install two days later. Premises tech was very professional, order a replacement drop, replaced the old NID, installed a splitter, and ran Cat5 to the location where the residential gateway would be and to where one of the STBs would be. Once everything was up and running, registered with my existing user name and password. Installation was amazingly flawless.

The connection has been rock solid, but the DNS issues that I experienced with PacBell DSL so long ago are back with U-verse. I ended up enumerating a list of known AT&T DNS servers, and that seems to solve the problem. Otherwise, I pay less and get more up bandwidth.

The only real downfall was the install was never sent to dispatch. So i had to take off two separate days back to back to get this installed. ATT really dropped the ball with me on the install. After calling all day Sunday and verifying my installation, i still never got a tech or a call to say nobody was coming. I finally found out the install was never sent to dispatch at ALL! Well the next day a gentlemen named Lasal came bright and early! There were many different issues that he ran into, mainly being on ATT side of things. My home is brand new, with brand new wiring. Yet there were signal issues everywhere. Finally he got in touch with an IR tech whom was very friendly and headed over to my home with out a fight. After the IR tech left Lasal still had issues with the training and handshake. Finally all is resolved and i'm up and running. I will further review at the end of the week.

We have the U200 package with DVR and Express Internet (1.5Mbit). It took a while to get installed because demand was high but, the service has been worth it. I get almost exactly the advertised speeds and the service has never been down in the 4 months that we have had it.

The installer called about 30 minutes before hand to verify the installation and ask if we were home and had time for the install. After arriving, he wore plastic booties all through our apartment even though we told him he didn't need to do that. He wouldn't take more than a glass of water from us even though we offered him a soda.

He checked the existing Coax and even showed us our options for running it in our apartment and offered to run it one way and then pull it up and show us the other way to see what we liked better. After verifying that the Coax in the wall was good, he cut the wire and put all new connectors on it and new wall plates. He said they do that just in case the old wiring was faulty for some reason. He installed the DVR and made sure everything was working fine and we could see all the channels we were supposed to before leaving.

Everything has worked great and we are hooked. It has been super reliable. My only complaint is that after being off, the modem takes a very long time to boot (about 5-7 minutes). Once it is on though, you never need to turn it off or re-boot it. I just had to do it once because we moved furniture.

So an ATT sales manager is walking around my neighborhood hawking ATT UVerse, apparently they had just laid the fiber in our neighborhood. Right before he showed at my door I had called Dish network to upgrade my receiver to a DVR and dump the Tivo (Purely for cost reasons) Dish charger customer $199 to switch a receiver out and they own the equipment. I thought I would get an HD DVR because I plan to buy a new TV in the next six months and do not want to pay another $199 to go from there regular to HD DVR. Thats a no go with them after two sales reps I was ready to start looking for new service. Did the ATT guy pick the right day to knock on my door.

I ordered Uverse 200 and the low end DSL which was a 1.5 down 1 up. After the order and install date was set. I went and started canceling my services to die out the monday after the friday install. The next day I get a call "We cannot install Uverse until your DSLExtreme has been disconnected for 6 days" Its a deal they have with the 3rd party providers. I have to clear my phone line and live without service for 5 to 6 days. I was floored. I lost my original install date and had to wait for the line to clear. They told me they would watch the line and call as soon as they could do the install. Turned out that was the saturday after my original install day. They set a new date for tuesday. Which means my Dish turns off on monday no service till tuesday. We can live one day.

Tuesday rolls around and I hear nothing until close to 2:00 the service guy calls they are running behind and want to reschedule for another week. I am not happy, give them the guilt trip sad story of this is the second appointment and I have been without internet for a week. They give me well see what we can do. I call my sales rep and update him on the install issue. He apologizes and starts to see what can be done. 15 minutes later the rep calls back and tells me 3:00. 3:00 the tech calls and it will be an hour before he can get there (has to go back to the warehouse for my equipment)

5:00 the installer shows up. Great! Once you have an installer chances are the job is going to get done. I show him the TV drops and where the DSL goes. He has to go to the fiber point and set up the port, then to the MPOE on the side of my condo building and install a splitter (They are back to external splitters I am am thrilled I hate those dam filters) Then my original installer shows up to give this guy hand. While they do the outside work I unpack and hook up the 3 TV boxes and the DSL box and start programming the remotes for my stuff. Hint if you can help an installer not have to spend time doing these little things, the install goes faster and they will be nicer. They have to run 1 drop to my master bedroom because when I removed the satellite dish I removed all the cables on the side of the building which brings me into compliance with the HOA rules and looks nicer. Dish did a crappy install for me originally and all that coax looked like crap. Because of this that drop had to be installed. There was a path from my garage where everything comes together to the attic then down in the master bedroom closet. The techs where going to run coax but I asked if they would use my Belden Superwire (2 coax 2 cat5e glued together) They said sure same amount of pain. Between the 3 of us. One in the attic one in the garage me in the bedroom feeding cable the drop got done. These guys did me a huge favor and earned Kudos for that move. Again offering help greased got it done. They also had to go under my house to the little phone block to add some connections and make sure they had the right pairs activated in the garage. The tech also cleaned up my crappy electrical tape covered connections originally done on the cat 3 cable running to the garage. Once done we turned everything on and it all worked great. TV’s running, Internet up. They left and the service has been fine since.

I recommend Uverse if you can get it, The DSL speeds are good the TV picture is clearer than Dish and the price is cheaper than Dish, DirectTV and Comcast. And ATT has no commitment I can cancel the service tomorrow.

Quality of picture is as good in SD and HD as Directv IMO. Some pixelation once in awhile. No more than with Directv in HD

While Directv doesn't limit the HD steams you do have to pay $10per month per hd box plus $6 for extra HD channels.

Possible Workaround for 3rd Party DSL Disconnect Wait

"I have to clear my phone line and live without service for 5 to 6 days."

This was a deal breaker for me when I called and asked about uVerse. However, I found out I could change over from 3rd party DSL to AT&T DSL in one day and then later jump from AT&T DSL to uVerse same day avoiding the six day wait to go from 3rd party DSL directly to uVerse.

If you cannot live without high speed Internet for six days, this two step approach might work.

3rd party -> AT&T DSL -> uVerse
