Various reviews over the years and multiple ISP's since the advent of high speed 1200baud rate
Aristotle was hard to beat with 1G/1G, while Dallas and the crew was there, using Earthlink, which left us all holding an empty bag of zero's. Now using AT&T, which I have not had since comparing them and cable around 2000.
One thing about AT&T, they may be consistently slow, but they are reliable and many understand how important that is. Averaging around 9meg, with a service of 12meg -But, I'm a couple of miles from the sweet spot. It does get under my skin that less than 800 yards away is a Uverse sweet spot I can't have because the line runs the wrong way. Living in a historic district has it's downsides with any service; we are always LAST on any service update list, regardless of what it is.
I'm happy to have a solid connection though and will not complain about pricing for a business line at all, $40 a month is ridiculously low. I'm used to $80's + and cable was $200. I'm hoping AT&T upgrades the area so that I can also get TV and will be more than happy to pay for the service; I have never, ever been a grinch when it comes to paying for broadband, I use it more than anything else PC related -So, I'm willing to pay. I have now had service a full month.
After getting service, which was delayed due to the software mishap for a week, I'm fairly content, I know the line can handle a much better connection speed (Aristotle/Earthlink) but AT&T is slow [Years] to upgrade hardware.
If there is a con, it has to be contacting AT&T -It's entirely setup for cell phone wireless customers ONLY and is horrific to get past. However the results have been great in terms of results. AT&T will not leave you hanging without a service like Comcast will.
Cheers *********** Update April 26th, Remains 100% reliable. Satisfied.

Ive had uverse since June of 2007. Had the normal glitches in first year and att fixed them all. Here it is five years later the glitches which were gone are now coming back again. Dvr failures RG failures losing recorded shows all the time.voice and video out of sync .and all you get if you call is their stupid tier one. If new alternative comes to our town Ill be jumping ship.I keep down grading tv plans now down to 200 package .They keep adding stupid commercial channels and all of their uverse preview channels .and call them new channels added towards your package

Broadband speed selected is up to 18 Mbps downstream and up to 1.5 Mbps upstream. I check it every day and the speed has been pretty consistent.

| | Now a fan of AT&T I can't begin to tell how much I dislike this company and there services. I have AT&T U Verse Internet - it is unbelievable slow. I work from home and it's a nightmare. Before I moved I had Comcast and for a while Time Warner. Unfortunately AT&T was all they offered in the area I live in now. I tried AT&T internet service years ago and was unhappy with it. One of the IT guys at my job (maybe 2002 or 03) recommend I try Comcast. He said the speed was incredible better than AT&T - he warned me it was a bit more expensive but said once I tried it I would never want to go back to AT&T. HE WAS RIGHT!. I HATE AT&T with a passion.
I will not even get started on what it took to even get them to come out and install the sorry AT&T U Verse and regular phone services (because they didn't off U-Verse phone services in this area. Not to mention I couldn't combine the account to get one bill and it's all AT&T.
When it comes to Information Technology AT&T is definitely behind other companies. Ever chance I get I tell people don't even try it. I recommend cable companies and their broadband capabilities.
AT&T SUCKS! | |
| | | ATT - No good ATT has lousy customer service. They say that billing is one month in advance but yet they can charge for the movies you rent on demand the same billing cycle? Plus, they charged me for HBO Cinemax when I have it for free until the next month...! Very confusing for sure. Then, forget about rebates they promise. It is like going through Ft. Knox to get what was promised. Can't wait until December-going back to Comcast!!!! | |
| | | Beware! Watch you bills!! I have had a TERRIBLE experience with AT&T Uverse. I have been arguing my bill for months now and every single Rep that I talk to comes up with a different number owed. Shouldn't there be one amount if this is legit???? I have asked to speak to a Manager several times and have waited days with no call back that was promised to me. I just took the AT&T Uverse survey and was asked to be called back. I spoke to the Rep that called me and she actually hung up on me while we were talking. Is this how you handle your customer service? I didn't get loud on the call at all. I was just trying to make my point and she hung up on me. I can't believe that you are still in business. I have never been treated this poorly by a service provider. I have had nothing but problems since I have signed up with you. What will it take to get to the correct person that will help me solve this billing issue so we can part ways?? Doesn't anyone care at AT&T Uverse? I will be warning everyone I know that they should think twice before using your service. | |

$50 per month- (12 month contract)
about 1 days "Fast downloads." "Cannot use my previous modem." "Not bad from switching from Cox."
| Pre Sales Information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)
|
We had to switch from Cox to AT&T U-verse because our apartment complex's contract with Cox expired.
Although I wasn't here for the setup, the technician seem to know what to do. He had to disable a few things from my own router to get their residential gateway (router/modem) to work. He had to set my router to bridge-mode and disable DHCP.
The setup was completed, but I had to all my setting back to normal. Unfortunately, AT&T router/modem's DHCP cannot be disabled, nor place it in bridge-mode. Also, their router/modem doesn't have 802.11n, so I have to keep my own router to have 11n available to my devices.
Fortunately, after reading several forums regarding U-verse settings, etc., I was able to get the residential gateway to act as a "modem" and allow my router to get the external IP. This way, my router is back to its normal functions.
UPDATE Oct 4, 2012: I did upgrade from 12 to 18 Mbps for the extra speed. I can't complain. Very consistent speeds at various points of the day.
UPDATE: Apr 12, 2013: No new praises or complaints. Still happy as I can be with 18 Mbps.

| | does that $50 include TV? they rolled out partial Uverse in my area near USCD. I threatened to cancel and got $24.95 for 1/yr and a $100 rebate on their crappy router. If you pay directly through at&t try to make em sweat a little. I'm guessing you are paying through a third party if its building based though.
One place I lived handed out pamphlets when you moved in to get your phone / cable etc all in one bill. I said F that and signed up each singly. Maybe you have the same flexibility.

| Re: does that $50 include TV? No, it doesn't include the TV portion of the service.
AT&T gave me a router/modem, a 2WIRE 3800HGV-B. An oversized piece of s*#t that has very few settings that I can change. Like I cannot turn off DHCP, so my home router is basically an expensive switch right now. It has no 11n because I searched in its settings that 11g is the only thing in there.

Sounds like they locked down their Uverse that has a TV option modem too.
I understand your pain, my girlfriend's Airport express is nearly worthless now, no more itunes over the stereo.
I know there's a work around for the 510 but it sounds like it could stop working suddenly if they change your IP.

| | | That's not a deal. I didn't even threaten to cancel and the lady told me the 24.95/1 year price was standard, and most offices would waive the modem fee. | |

| | disrespectful commercial
I find the Career Day commercial offensive,as it makes it look ok to be disrespectful to adults. In real life in that situation, the cable guy is probably one of the other students parent, think of how that child would feel to see his/her parent humiliated in front of the class.I change the chanel everytime this commercial is aired ,and hope it will be discontinued SOON! Thanks for your consideration
| | | | Re: disrespectful commercial I agree with you. The commercial portrays a daddy taking the time to come to his childs school Career Day and some rude little know-it-all girl sits there challenging what he has to say and looking down her nose at him. He is obviously a hard working tax paying citizen who also cares very much about his children ... maybe the little girls mother would be better served if she took as much time teaching her child respect for her elders as she does teaching her about AT&T marketing practices. It's hard enough to get father participation in school activities without AT&T showing them just how little they think of that fatherly input. BAD concept. | |

Very happy with my AT&T UVerse install so far.
Ordered Uverse on 10/12/09 with an install date of 10/26/09.
Tech called me about 11:30 am on his way here from his previous job (my window was 11a-1pm).
Tech showed up. We chatted a few.. I have DT (POTS) so he checked my phone heard the DT then said he needed to go jumper (at the VRAD)
He was gone a few mins and then came back... brought the equipment including his test set.. Could get DT but could not see a responce back from the VRAD.. so he headed out again after checking the wiring in the MDU ( We chatted about how aweful MDU wiring can be) ... etc...
He went out and sure enough the place he jumpered on the VRAD was bad ( he said he sees this often on a lot of VRADs) I chuckled and said "it's amazing that this technology works on such old phone system.."
He then replaced my wall plate (installing a baun in the wall to seperate the POTS from the jack for the UVerse RG)
Then he setup the RG and the DVR box... while he did that (I was talking tech with him as I do support for a cable company in another state) while he finished setting up the DVR I configured my laptop with the provided SSID and WPA key... and we where online
Great install.. Overall I am very pleased with the service. the 6 MB / 1MB is on target with the speed tests and so far the DVR is working wonderful and the picture (even on my SD TV) is better than what I had with Digital cable with Time Warner.
Currently subscribing to UVerse U200 for Video and 6MB/1MB for the Data.
Update 03/12/12 : I got rid of DVR in NOV 09 due to cost... Finally moving to cable 3/12. Uverse was nice but I really want a higher bandwidth package than 24/3 and AT*T seems not willing to update to Fiber to support DOCSIS 3 type speeds.
Update 10/1/12 : Signed back up with UVerse for HSI. Great service so far (64mbps sync as I am only a stones throw away from the VRAD)
Constant speed on the 18M down / 1.5M up Tier - Little pricey $56.00 a month and they started to charge a $6.00 equipment fee.
Downgraded on 4/10/13 to 3M down / 1M up Tier .. Looking at cable again as DOCSIS 3 will be here this summer and offer faster tier speeds.

Coming from Hughesnet Satellite, my review is probably a little skewed. 100% better speeds and bandwidth caps have not been an issue (only had the service for 2 weeks).
Can finally stream video and listen to music without worry of penalty. Have not tried to play any games yet but I'm showing 26 ms ping on speed tests.
Installation went well and the technician was very friendly and helpful. He even reinstalled the wireless printer to get it online. Took his time and was in no rush. He stayed two or three hours until everything was working properly and all questions were answered.
So far we're very happy.

LIke Willis127 I wished I had googled a bit more on the methods used by AT&T in the way they bill and give customer support.
here is my story after only a week with U-verse.
Here in my neighbor hood in Houston we had until now only entouch as cable provider. But now finally we had the possibility to get AT&T. So I researched a bit on the prices and found out I could save a couple of bucks and get faster Internet. So I tried to order the bundle with U200 and 18Mb internet. Should cost $97 +tax and fees. I couldn't complete the order onlinstand got a message to call in and order.. Very good (non Indian without offending anybody) service were I was walked through every step and they understood what I wanted. Order completed without fuzz and I had to pay $449 in DEPOSIT (remember this word) because I didn't have any US credit history (coming from Europe). Steep but I'm used to it by now. Order done and installation was very fast.
Now a week later I get my first bill. Suddenly my deposit was turned into $199 installation fee ands $250 NON-refundabfee credit FEE. So all my deposit was now used to pay for this and my my bill is for the next month $190..... Remember this was set to $97...
so this morning I call (India) because of course this has to be a mistake. But no! Not even after talking to some manager who explained to me that this is how it is and even if I would cancel and opt the 30 day money back that i was told i had, they would still take the $250 credit fee. So no matter what I do now I'm screwed ..... Normally people actually go to jail for doing this but apparently you can do that in the US....
Moral to the story. Don't go with AT&T. And if you do, don't pay anything upfront.

| Do not back down. Persist until you get all your money back! Call them back ask for a supervisor to speak with you, and firmly, but politely inform them that unless they promtly refund all monies you request which are due, you will be contacting the public utility commission, and the state attorney general because they have breached the terms of the contract which constitutes fraud.
I wish you the best of luck. Unfortunately the US has become a very corrupt country and ethics are lacking or nonexistent in many areas of life.
| | | 449 449 is not a deposit. It is a HIGH RISK CREDIT fee it is non refundable. If you pay your bill on time you will get a $5 credit each month.
It has never been shown as a deposit in the TOS

$130 per month about 19 days "Whole House DVR" "Took them swapping my gateway 3 times before it worked properly"
| |
I have had U-Verse since I moved here in 2009. It is really the only option because Charter does not offer whole-house DVR and I hate dishes....I do not want one on my house. The whole-house DVR is the only way wifey and I can stay at peace. I am satisfied with the service. I am not overly excited about, but I am not disappointed. The picture quality is fine. I wish they offered more bandwidth. The fastest offered at my address is 18Mbps down. Charter offers but I don't want to go separate because you end up paying more than getting a bundled discount.

*** Update 04/01/13 *** No changes in service, speed and quality unchanged. My only complaint - we recently had price increase, now paying $200 / month for 6 meg profile, HD dvr, plus one remote STB and u-200 package. Pricey, starting to consider a change to something less expensive
*** Update 09/27/12 *** Speed is checked regularly with speedtest.net, almost always 5.5 meg down, .95 meg up. Service has been very reliable, have not had any problems. *** April 2011 *** After endless promotions, mailbox leaflets, television advertisements and the thought VOIP triple play would save our household some money, we signed up. The agent at the brick and mortar store nearby walked thru our options, and sold the package including U-200 with the 6 meg down/1 meg up internet service and telephone.
Equipment: TwoWire 3800HGV-B residential Gateway, Belkin Battery Backup - Rev. "B", DVR is Motorola VIP1216
One of the disappointments so far is the program guide is relatively slow to display, and searching for a program some time in the future using the on screen menu is painfully slow. Our prior cable company guide allowed you to select the day, making it easier to pick something next week. (U-Verse allows remote management of the DVR via the web, - very, very nice!)
Out of the box, the DHCP server in the RG assigned computers new IP's and the process was simple enough. Since I already had a wireless access point set up, I disabled that feature in the 2wire. I can't put my finger on it, but believe slight lag in loading web pages was due to the AT&T dns servers. Switched to OpenDNS and things seem much snappier.
The installer was pleasant, and the experience was good. Even with a late Saturday afternoon scheduled install, I was very surprised when the installer consulted with a line tech and they arranged for a new aerial to be run on Saturday evening (7pm) to improve the line specs. According to U-VerseRealtime, we are 2,200 feet from the VRAD.
On the TV, there is occasional pixelation, but about the same as our prior cable company, so no better or worse there.
Cannot say after 21 days of service, whether this is better/worse/ or about the same. On price alone, I would have to say better.

$65 per month about 7 days "Reliable when it works." "If something goes wrong with your sync, expect a blame game to start which will cause it not to get fixed."
| Pre Sales Information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Value for money: (ratings below consensus)

U-Verse TV is okay if you want poor HD picture and no DD5.1 Surround Sound which AT&T took over 2 years to finally accept it as a major problem with no solution in site. I have since dropped the TV service for these reasons since there are better options out there. The Internet service is now going down the drain since AT&T has decided to nickel and dime the customers by implementing a 250 GB hard cap on the service in order to make more money. If you have a sync issue, do not expect it to get fixed quickly, because I had an issue that took almost 8 months to be fixed since a blame game between the equipment and the lines was in play. It was ultimately the port at the V-Rad which is what I asked to be checked at the beginning of the issue based on line stats. Overall, AT&T promised to have more competition when allowed to merge with BellSouth, but the only thing that is happening is the old AT&T monopoly coming back. We can only hope that a judge or the feds will realize this soon and break it back up.
Update: No longer have UVerse due to new 'because we can fees' with no formal notice, so I dropped Internet for Comcast since you better speed for the price; dropped UVoice for a return to Vonage Basictalk Plan which is greatly cheaper for similar quality and truly unlimited voice.
