Just off the phone with the tech support there. Answered the call within three rings, no automated message. Sooo helpful and patient, going through many options to find an email/connection problem that turned out not to even originate with their service.

It's been over a year with this company and I have had better speed, and much much better service than I ever had with Bell.

Going from Bell 25/10 dsl to Start 25/10 dsl. We knew we weren't getting the speeds we were paying for with Bell. Once we transferred our services and Start made aware that our location cannot support the speed, they voluntarily downgraded us to a more applicable package. When our internet still kept disconnecting, Start spent 1 hour providing technical support to get our internet as stable as possible. Scheduling another Bell tech visit and multiple follow-up phone calls were also made.

Amazing how Start can be so much more affordable and able to provide an amazing technical support team who are so willing to try and figure out the root of this internet service problem

THANK YOU!!!

Ordered 60/10 Unlimited for $65/month. I'm currently paying $5/month for the modem rental but it can be purchased for $100.

The order process was painless. I had a number of pre-sales questions and all of the staff I spoke with were able to answer my questions right away. I don't think I was ever on hold. After placing the order I received at least 2 phone calls from the time I ordered until the time my connection was active. I had arranged for ~15 days between cancelling my previous provider and starting with Start. The first call was to be informed that they hadn't forgotten about me and that I should be receiving my modem soon. The second call was a few days before my scheduled cut over date and they explained everything I would need to do when my former provider cut me off and Start would kick in.

2 or 3 days after everything was up and running I received another call with and they were confirming that everything was working and looked good from their end and asked (again) if I had any questions or issues they could help with. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide the winning lottery numbers I requested.

During the first week or so I found that my connection speeds were all over the place. One day full 60Mbps down and the next I was lucky to be hitting 30. After that week things seemed to settle down to the full 60.

Definitely worth checking out Start.ca if you're looking for a new ISP.

5 year update: Upgraded my service to the 250-20 package back in the spring of 2017, the only issue I had was the modem used was defected (puma6) and replaced it a few weeks ago and solved my streaming/gaming issues.

Zero issues with the service or when I had to call into support. This is the BEST ISP for us in Oshawa

I still stand by my review from 5 years ago.

Sign up/Connection date: Feb 12th,2013
Transfered from Rogers
Usage: Home/Business

Provisioning of my own cable modem took longer then I hoped (2 days) but that's Rogers screwing with me one final time! I made 4 calls to support/billing and wait times took less than one minute for each call! (beat that Teksavvy)

Overall 95% happy, the other 5 % is that, I find there maybe peering issues with some of the routes Start.ca is using to connect to my servers from Europe. the route goes between Start>HE.net>Leaseweb, but I'll need more time to figure what is causing some of the connections to be very slow at times.

I have about 50+ people that are waiting to sign up and they will be waiting a month for me to recommend Start.ca to them. After that last horror story I had dealing with Teksavvy, I don't blame every one for waiting.

So far for Start.ca is very serious about their services that they offer. USA peering is very good to my vpn servers and many other east coast data centers that I use,

It's a true alternative to Rogers.

Cheers

I ordered a few days before my apartment move in with a modem being sent to my old location.

I've been a member since September of last year and started on the 120/10 package. There was no installation time in my Cogeco owned location, it was just a quick change on their end as far as I understand -- it was transparent to me.

The service worked perfectly but I soon decided it was overkill for what I needed.

When I called to change late at night on a Sunday for a service change they did so no questions asked and were very explicit in how the change would work and when billing would change. About 3 hours later and everything was already changed over to the new speeds.

I've never had a problem with their service and am very happen to have chosen them!

EDIT: Also not to mention the owner and Start support are active and friendly here, they seem to have a really great team together.

Pretty much everything, good company all around
When getting Cable, you have to wait a few days up to a week to get the actual install date(not starts fault)
I would definitely recommend this company

I've been with Start Communications several times over the past 7 years and they are a great company with friendly and good customer service skills, and are not outsourced

I've primarily used Start for cable internet (cogeco lines) but I have also used it with VDSL. Both services function fairly well, at least at my current location (got the full speeds on both services). Only thing about getting cable internet set up is cogeco is sometimes very slow at responding to connection appointment requests from start when they get backlogged (but this is not starts fault as they have to go through cogeco), So you may have to wait a week or so to find out when they are going to be able to set it up.

All in all I would recommend this company!, had to disconnect my services temporarily because of some non related issues but I plan on going back with them soon.

It took a week for installation, charged me almost 300$ for installation, monthly fee, a modem and a crappy router that does not even reach my bedroom in a small 1 bed room apartment.

Worked for couple of days and then stopped working. I called them after a very long phone call of try this and try that , they said we will send someone after two days and this all what they can do. I am freelancer and my work is depended on the internet. I missed my deadlines because of them, and they will make me pay for their downtime as well! I am paying them without receiveing a service at all.

be careful of those cheaters

Start Communications

You could have similar or worse problems with any ISP. You should have seen the downtime I had with Rogers for home internet, the few issues I had with Teksavvy (and the extremely long wait times on hold), and the frequent issues with Bell for business internet.

After having service with a variety of ISP's, I've found Start to offer better service overall. Sorry to hear you've had an unpleasant experience. That doesn't really seem like the Start I know and have read so much about. However, new installs can occasionally have issues, and a reasonable amount of time to work them out is no less than 1 week after initial install.

I can't believe you'd let something like an issue with your home ISP prevent you from meeting your deadlines. When I have deadlines and things aren't working, I wifi tether my computers using my smartphone, or I visit a friend's place with my laptop. Don't let the failure of others become your failure. Freelancing means you're in business for yourself - as a responsible business owner, you should have a contingency plan for these eventualties.

I wish you luck.

I'm sorry to hear you're having some WiFi or other issues, but if you pm me your account number I'm happy to review because a few things definitely seem off here. Thanks.

Don't be so quick to judge.

If you're dependent on having a solid 24/7 net uptime with immediate issue resolve then 1) A TPIA may not be the best choice for you. 2) You should have a backup line like an LTE WiFi or an other provider or perhaps a business line.

Total bogus review

Obviously a bogus review - hit-n-run and totally outside the general consensus which is above average.

I have been with Start for 4 years now, never a hitch until recently. Cannot obtain steady, consistent download speeds no matter what. Spent 7 + calls with tech support. Got the usual run around although they were for the most part extremely polite and tried to help.

NOT top tier?

i respectfully disagree... i have the top tier package (250/20) and have not had any problems.
(perhaps it is because i have it on rcable... )
oh, well... in any case my sister has “real” ccable of 100 (and no problems) so perhaps going with the 100 speed might help solve the problem? (going with “real” ccable is not going to help...IMO)
