I've been with PLDT since 2004, it was Piltel back then locally. I have no complaints, it just works. Back then it was the only game in town aside from dial up in our area. Today we have several other services, this in my opinion for this area is the best. When I relocated to an area far from the CO, the technicians went out of their way to get me the best connection possible, including running new wires at no additional cost to me. Later after they upgrade the lines, I was able to get the full amount of bandwidth offered. They have upgraded the service three times at no additional cost. Update: Upgraded me again, no cost.

slow connection

I experience slow connection last week, report it then it was fixed.

Purchased fastest available speed - 10Mbps. Works very well. International web sites are limited to about 3Mbps each, but can run several computers on this concurrently without any loss. No apparent silly proxy interference or hidden web caching. I like it. Finally a decent connection to the world from Manila.

Background: I have had internet accounts with all Manila ISP's - usually the fastest connection I could buy.

Bayantel - (3 times) the absolute worst ISP - they are in bankruptcy protection, and the service is horrible, crippled and terribly slow throttled junk. They have no money for new or enough equipment to do the job, and try to squeeze too many customers in.
SkyCable - (several times) uses Bayantel for its internet - same horrible service as Bayantel.
WiTribe - (1 year) was OK /slow, but went really slow to dead useless in 2012.
SmartBro canopy - (6 years) has always worked well, but only slow speeds available.
Globe DSL - (5 years) Up and down. Globe waits for things to get overloaded before upgrading, so you can get several months of slow. When they are expanding and on new equipment- works great.

I have been a subscriber of the service for 7 years (84 months). The service was packaged with my landline service and since the company practically monopolize the phone line service I decided to utilize their DSL. The service has been quite satisfactory although it could be better. The broadband service was quite good at the start but as the line becomes congested the speed just deteriorated.

The advertised installation and process time is quite different from what you will experience when you sign up. Requesting for service is received quickly but getting the service takes you several follow up and several days in order for you to get service.

as an example:

I applied for the transfer of my DSL/phone service to a different unit in the same complex. The application was done a 33 days ago! Until now when I follow up the service I requested, the reply is that my request is still for processing of having a job order!! This is coming from a company that takes pride in their advance technology!!

They can not provide an exact time or estimate when this could be processed.

I can easily compare this to the same service I requested for my cable connection. The cable connection was done with in a week!!

avoid frusration - do not get this service!!

My mom have been using PLDT as my ISP provider for quite sometime since Globe totally sucks when in terms of speed issues and even smart bro( the wireless broadband connection that would get you disconnected from time to time). PLDT when in terms of speed with their dsl is great. you wont have any complaints with regard to their product. The only problem (to which i call a major problem) is when your internet connection goes down for no specific reason. You call their customer service or technical support whatever you want to call it. They don't have any idea of what's going on. they cant even do a line test to check if there's any problem! i have been in the US for 4 years and had been using Bellsouth (Before ATnT took them all) the service was great the technical support was impressive, their reps would be able to identify the problem that you have with your internet and would dispatch a tech if needed. with PLDT you wont pay a single dime for their freakin service. Their technical support is more like a telephone operator after identifying your problem they would immediately assume that its a network problem and they would escalate it to their engineers and i should be calling back say 24 to 48hrs and then after which still no news just escalate and escalate. Their tech support is bad in the sense that their reps didnt even know how to troubleshoot simple connection. PLDT has the tools already all they need is to polish some rough edges. Stop lying to the customers that you would be getting this and getting that and if you want to earn more revenue start with a simple word "customer service" who knows more and perhaps remove some rotten apples around to go with it. The company can compete with other ISP provider but it just needs some polishing.

the speed is way down the bottom of the barrel. connection reliability is shot. customer service promises everything but does nothing. you might as well be living in the stone age, at least you don't expect dsl service.

Located in Manila, Philippines, our original provider was Smart wireless (aka Smart Bro), in one location it was acceptable (and cheaper than PLDT), at the next address it was terrible. Smart Bro failures were the reason for the PLDT DSL purchase, and it's really been very reliable. We had one speed problem (very slow, 70 on download and 28 on upload), and it took awhile to get the trouble call escalated and a fix made ("renewing the connection"). However, the service generally has been rock solid and has remained on when the voice service was unavailable. Smart was 2/3 the cost but nothing but trouble if the antenna and tower just were not in good positions. We also have Visibility service from Globe, this is HSDPA wireless access which covers most of the country, and includes a hotspot login (WiFi available at various business locations) and a dial-up account, all for about $70 per month. True high speed is not always available but for moving about with the laptop, it's great. Our experience has been that PLDT is the best broadband solution, with Globe second and Smart a distant third.

Philippine Long Distance Telecom Company

A brief introduction to the The Plan 999 Service: i heard about it in late 2005 (October i think) with an advertised speed of 256 Kbps (IIRC, it was 128Kbps, then upped to 256 less than to a month later. i couldnt remember clearly though), and in the span of a year, it went to 384, then now 512 Kbps. At a price of $21+ a month for just the DSL Service (contract was 12+ months, the total cost was more than $40 with the phone line), It had Unlimited up/downloads. A DSL Modem (Connected to the LAN port) was included (charged in the first 12 months' bill, A Xyxel Modem, branded Prestige 500). A (very) good deal compared to what the other countries are getting back then (with the capped download/upload).

As for choices, There was no other cheaper choice back then. the next plan was still from PLDT, with a speed IIRC, twice that of the 999 Plan at $32+. and there was other plans like Destiny Cable's Cable line (it was also a bit expensive and it only has good speed on off-peak hours and you need to be subscribed to them). And Sky Cable's ZpDee (IIRC, same or faster as the latter PLDT plan). The other plans were just way too much for our basic use, so we went with the 999.

I was connected in more than a week after i sent the paperwork, and it did perform as advertised. It was much faster than dial-up. downloads was way faster, online gaming was a much more OK experience (of course it was still slow due to the speed). plus i didnt have the encumbrance of running out of hours on prepaid dial-up cards.

Fast forward more than a year later, and the service IME, seems to be still as good as advertised (i still hit close to the advertised speed despite the problems other have, pinging US servers), but the latency is still bad (100+, sometimes gets to 200+. makes some gaming undesirable especially if the server is in US). There have been some major problems to the line like the taiwan earthquake (we are not the only ones affected. even taiwan had to minimize unimportant use of the phone lines and internet, it was fixed, though, it took some time), and now, I think, the upgrading of the lines to the newer 'NxGn' (I think this one is their fault, actually. And i just felt the new speed increase now).

About service: I had not much problems (it took a while to get passwords from them though), but after a year of use, the line broke down (a final check showed it to be a broken modem) and they replaced it with a new one (even if i think the warranty from them has elapsed) although we had to roughen up the guys at tech support, twice. They also replaced the DSL splitter twice (the two times they came to check up on the line). So it was a toss up in the service. I think you really need to hound the guys at tech support (just) to get somewhere (it also helps to have some knowledge in diagnosing some of the common problems.. some of the tech support guys sometimes wont fix it if you don't point the obvious at them as i learned with the modem problem.).

Overall, IME for the years of use, it has been a good service (Not excellent though).
