I ordered 2 magicjacks, one for me and one for the 'rents 3 months ago. Installation was seamless, call quality when good, great. About 1 in 5 times weird clicking sound on the line like every third packet is dropped. Ships fast, great usefulness to plug in a legacy easy phone that everyone understands. The dialpad/software is the most annoying thing on earth - will not operate consistently in background, forgets your settings, crappy contact management and no skinning. Hope that someday they will improve that one. I would love to see a better website, currently useless. Thank god for dual monitors. Order process seamless, charged me after the trial period finished.

Very useful as backup to cell phone - very very useful to minimize charges when calling toll free numbers and wonderful to be on hold with - just put it on your computer's speakers and adjust speaker volumes so you can grab a sandwich while on hold etc.

Pretty consistent reliability other than clicking problem as long as your ISP isn't misbehaving. Now if only I could Verizon Fios to be rock solid....

Basically, unless you MUST have home phone service, if you have broadband get this and a cell phone and you are GOLDEN. Grandcentral makes a great team with it - hit star and swap calls to your cell. Stop paying twice for an extra line to your house.

Also sold my neighbors on it, they ordered 3, one works great and one had to be returned. They love it when it works.

    My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
i did alot of research on this as there was an article in the local paper back in April 2008 and i figured that i would give it a shot....i am not a shill for the company nor do i have any stock or financial interest in the company but so far i am really pleased with the results that i have gotten (though your mileage may vary)....i am using a 768 down/128 up package (DSL) and the results so far have been very good.....sometimes i get a minor echo of myself when i call out and that is only sometimes, maybe a 1 sec or less of delay but the people on the other end do not hear that so it is not a terribly big deal. the calls go right thru and stay connected.....

all i did was to put the MJ into the usb port and let the software install....i tried the softphone proggie to dial the landline phone (which i do NOT plan to get rid of) and the cel phone that i have and that worked great...so i got a $7 phone from family dollar store and plugged it in and away we went....i called the US and a bud in canada (talked to him for over an hour) with no problems at all.

had no experience with tech support so i cant comment on that....the forum here and the unofficial magicjack forums are a goldmine of helpful and useful information

$20 for the unit and $20 a year for service, for me it was and is a great deal!!!!!!

i gotta tell ya i was very skeptical at first but after trying it, i am more than pleased with what i have so far....if it stays this good, i will renew for another year of service....

Took MJ to Manila, Philippines on vacation. Plug it to my laptop and hotel broadband service....called US and Canada without a problem. "They" also called me and it rings in my hotel...awsome! I gave it to my brother in law...they now can call the US and Canada for $20 a year....its truely better than slice bread.

I ordered a MagicJack Thursday evening [3 July] and it arrived Tuesday the 8th. It took about 2 minutes to set up and it was working. I'm using the USB dongle with a $6.95 corded phone from Wal-Mart. I've tested it on several computers, including a Dell Inspiron laptop connected via wireless and an old Dell Dimension 4100 [USB1 ports] and a USB2 non-powered hub. It works flawlessly, except some hiccuping and echo that occurred once or twice on the wireless laptop [may have been the wireless card, so we can't blame MagicJack for this]. My wife used for several hours once I set it up, and is very happy with it.

I really don't care that it doesn't have a number local to my area, since I intended it for outgoing calls only.

The website struck me as a bit smarmy with the 'last day for the free trial' bit, but I overlooked that for the pricing.

As for the fine print in the EULA, I don't care about targeted advertising when it's confined to the softphone and the softphone is non-intrusive.

I set it up with the free trial period, so I'll report back on whether I'm billed before the website said I would be billed.

I haven't had to deal with tech support at this time.

I have also tried Vonage for 24.95 a month and packet 8 for 19.95 per month and with MAGIC Jack for 19.95 a year its basically 1.66 per month. I Personally get the same quality of a call from Magicjack for 19.95 a year as i did paying 24.95 a month from vonage.

"the cost of calls"
"none that I have found"

I love MagicJack. I don't understand the "I"m sending it back" postings. I was up and calling in less then 2 minutes. It doesn't take any techie brains to just plug it into a USB port. I've saved thousands in long distance calls to friends in other states and none of them are even aware that I am calling on MagicJack.

    Defective?

I got Magic Jack a few months ago. Plugged it in, went through the sign-up process, but it wouldn't work. Spent a couple of hours on their live chat, but they couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. Tried on 2 computers here. Then gave it to my son to try on his laptop. Didn't work. He tried it on a friend's PC. Didn't work. MORE time with their live chat. Finally returned it asking that they test it to see if it's defective & if it is, please send me a working one. 2 months later, no reimbursement for my return postage, no new Magic Jack, no communication whatsoever, I got on live chat again. Spent an hour & a half with 2 different people. They were not answering the questions I was asking. I finally gave up.

consider yourself lucky.... magic crap is no good-period! They also promise you that you will keep your number, or at least they did when I first obtained it in January... yet another lie!!! This product is donkey poooooh!!!!

    sucks massively

    @comcast.net

    Defective? YES YES YES!

...in addition, the service is bad, and nothing clear about the phone conversations! There's always a buzzy sound, and it usually will not dial out the first time you try to make a call, and you will have to try to redial sometimes between 2-6 times just to make a single call. In addition, you cannot dial some of the 866 or 800 numbers, I found out because I had to call comcast, and it wouldn't dial out... I had to go back to using the cell phone.... aaaaaaaah aren't you sold on the magic crap???

-- I truely hate that one of you got a defective MJ..
but out of 300 comments on 10+ websites 90% was Positive..
However Most was with defective MJ and they had return problems and the DAN@magicjack.com resolved their problems.. as you can see it's not an advertised email address and I think he created it..
    ..
I've had really no problem.. works great..
My only problem is that my electricity goes on/off at least twice a day and when my computer boots back up I get a "youve already registered magicjack, please verify your information" which I think is stupid.. if it reboots I want it to log back on so I can receive calls..
    ..
    Someone asked about INCOMING Calls..
the Phone Number area can call you FREE..
but someone outside of that area will have to pay their Normal cost for calling the area your # is based..
Like me.. MS has 1 area # in Jackson.. which is 3 hours from me.. So the people where I live, IF they dont have unlimited calling, will have to pay long distance..
BUT.. I didn't buy it for them.. they can call my CELL and I'll call them back on my MJ phone.
-- YOU are not charged for incoming calls..
Remember.. $19.95/ YR.. No phone bill

With magicJack.com's recent promotion and having seen all of the glorious online reviews (which I now that were ads) I decided to give this a try. After all, the savings over my current Vonage line would be substantial. I plugged it in... it did the autorun and I clicked on the magicJack app and went through the registration and phone # assignment. It then displayed an error and told me to restart magicJack. I didn't know if there was a restart option (as with a Windows Service like IIS) so I looked through the interfact and could not find one. I then unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it said all was well. At least until I tried to make a call. Call quality was HORRIBLE, ABYSSMAL, TERRIBLE, and NON-EXISTANT. If I was lucky I could hear about 2 ms worth of voice broken up by a half second of silence an another 2 ms of voice. Needless to say I have a trip to the post office to make to return this in my near future.

That may be true and I may invest 10 minutes into checking their site out for a fix, but I don't have a lot of time to mess with this.

On the inside of the package (and in all of their promos) it says... 1) Plug a phone in, 2) plug magicjack in, and 3) pick up your phone and talk for free with a banner of "here's how easy it is". That's hardly the case here.

Alrighty... went to their website and ran their little Java based fix program and I was able to make a successful test call. I'll monitor this tomorrow to see if this had anything to do with the time of day.

I'm still abit irritated with the "plug it in and it works" advertising as they should make this step part of the install if it solves 95% if the problems. After all, it wouldn't hurt a thing (I presume?) and could help many.

    Re: dont give up

Well, I've been testing this thing out and admittedly it's a lot better that my first impression from plugging it in and it delivering unusable voice quality, BUT it's still not up to par. People that I call would indicate my voice would fade in and out, occasional dropped words, and the general syncronization of a conversation just wasn't there as if they'd hear me late and so forth (hard to explain).

To the previous poster: Ok, fine... it's a computer problem... that doesn't really help. And being an IT professional I like to think I know what I'm doing.

In the end this just doesn't work well enough for me.

A friend got it for almost nothing. Like $20 at some promotion. She hated it. Both of us used a laptop since our desktops have expensive audio cards. She used a Sony Vaio and I have a HP (loaded).

I said I'd try and got the same issues: poor sound (a $1500 HP laptop (XP Pro) or a Sony Vaio laptop ($1800--XP Pro) so not the laptops--both of us listen to music, watch movies, etc.), echos (lot of echoes--sounded like in a tunnel), busy signals (all circuits busy), and both USB's didn't like it. Maybe, "I'm a Ferrari. I don't like Ford parts." kinda thing.

Software wasn't much. I wouldn't load it on an expensive desktop with expensive audio cards since MagicJack likes to "takeover".

    Pretty much for techies.

Live chat exists only in some weird part of cyberspace for tech. She tried to call, I didn't. Fix the website infomericial PUhleezeee! No, we didn't go to the magic forum of DSLreports.com. It shouldn't require astrophysics to do simple things.

It was a toy. Not a good one. Perhaps "beta" is not a good idea.

Called ID was funny. I called from my cell to it on her laptop. It wasn't my number. Again, it is a toy for some tech to make great, if possible. So, we will give it someone else who is geekish and let them figure it out. Like I said, we weren't trying for an uplink to the space shuttle so why is it sooo complicated.

Same problem with all Net based VOIP: 1 mb up should be fine, more than fine if 256k users make it work sometimes. She even hooked it up to a T3 connection at work. If it doesn't work there, it ain't working anywhere. Yes, she has full use of the T3. No blocks. I have 15/1 HSI.

It's not a Vonage killer (even though I hate them) but TMobile's new @Home might make MagicJack's future in serious doubt unless they just make it a irritating toy.

No, you're not getting her phone number. The MJ is back in its box with the rest of her useless tech junk. Both of us with stick with cell and home phones. I just tried to see if it was as great as this site claimed it was. And, it wasn't like I was paying for it. My USB is more important than the MJ since it usually is for a external HD. I have 4 USBs on the laptop but only like to use one of them. Sorry, one is for a mouse too.

Magic Jack is a "10 out of 10" Value

Just hooked up magic jack on my desktop (HP Media/Vista 64/dwbjr 6/768) - most calls are clear - some are weak, but so far ALL CALLS WORK! There was nothing to do but plug it in, so the problem is not with the product. There are several other factors beyond magic jack's control that can get in the way - poor routers, poor ISP's, system configurations that are not compatible, etc. But for me, this is money well spent - it's costing me a total of $19.99 PER YEAR for all of my domestic local and long distance calling. I am happy to put up with a few bad calls every now and then, in fact, when I think about it, I've had plenty of dropped calls and poor quality connections with all carriers (AT&T, VERIZON, QWEST, CHARTER, T-Mobil). Is anyone paying less for your unlimited local and long distance calls?

Call Quality - "I said I'd try it and got the same issues: poor sound, echos (lot of echoes--sounded like in a tunnel), busy signals (all circuits busy)..." Sorry you buy cheap computers.

Like you said, "some are weak", I don't like weak either. I like to pick up the phone, dial, and HEAR THE PERSON CLEARLY. THAT'S HOW MOM DID IT, THAT'S HOW AMERICA DID IT, and it worked out well till crappy productes like MJ, Vonage to hell, etc. came by. Even kids that use two cans with a string have better call quality than Sprint. Of course, the kids also get the other one everytime unlike a MJ!

Tmobile's @Home is going to be a VOiP competition killer NOT a MJ. Because you get a router NOT a little thingie that hooks into a USB port.

Always nice to meet a MJ rep. Thanks for astroturfing.

    @ibm.com

I have to agree with you. It's 19.95. What can you complain about? The thing takes over your system in that it makes itself your sound card device. True. It also makes some registry changes you should be aware of as well like being the default sound device on boot up. This is all fixable and not an issue. I never get echos, weird sound issues, or anything else. It works EXACTLY like it should. The set up was not so simple. It failed to load the software, and the web site sucks totally. They try to force the 3.95 charge on you over and over for "rush" delivery. You will get it in 5 days or so either way. Don't pay it!! Also, be aware that too many callers in your chosen area code will have to dial the full number to ring your number. Verizon: I did not have to, but the local phone company (Qwest) said it was a long distance number which it isn't. Be aware of these things. So in the end my opinion is it works great, does not impose on my computer, (I dedicate a stand alone computer to it since I have so many in my house and set everything to green mode.) Get one today!

I ordered through the magicJack site (which is ugly, but easy to navigate): one magicJack, standard shipping (supposedly with no package tracking, expected 5-10 business days for delivery), and no extras. I received the email confirmation almost immediately. The next day I received an email that it had shipped and a tracking number (so maybe all shipments now receive a tracking number despite what the website said?) with a link to the USPS tracking site (which worked fine). A couple days later I received the magicJack--way ahead of the 5-10 business days.

I plugged it in to my [WinXP] PC, went through the setup--all very straight-forward, made some calls & had some friends call me--call quality about as good as that for any POTS/PSTN lines I've ever used (so, very good--not as good as Skype-to-Skype, of course, but that's to be expected), works fine with GrandCentral. Calls use about 90-95kbps of my network bandwidth on average--fairly typical. (I have FiOS, but with that bandwidth usage it should sound good over DSL, too.) The exchange is a "local" exchange (local rate center anyway), however calls from other local calling exchanges don't seem to recognize it as local; but since I use GrandCentral this hardly matters--might check into the local vs. non-local later on, though, just out of curiosity. Also, since I won't even be using the voice-mail feature, I haven't even looked at it. (GrandCentral handles all of my voice-mail.) 911?... couldn't care less.

No problems at all--couldn't have been easier or less of a hassle. If you order through the magicJack site, you get a 30-day free trial, but all that means to me is that you have 30 days to verify that it works [well enough], and I did that within a couple days. (VoIP isn't POTS/PSTN, so I expect some hiccups down the road; but I've been using VoIP for years, so that's just par for the course. For the most part, I've had excellent results using VoIP products. Vonage over Verizon DSL was probably the best in overall service, quality, & features (and simplicity); using GrandCentral with Gizmo & other services over FiOS offers pretty much the same service, quality, & features but costs quite a bit less, as in nearly free. I had more of a problem getting Comcast Digital Voice setup properly than magicJack; it took Comcast several days to get the voice-mail and CallerID working correctly, and a significant number of calls early on got an "All circuits are busy" message.) I purchased magicJack with the intention of a year's trial. For $20 or not much more per year I'll keep it for as long as it works.

If there's one problem with magicJack at all, it's that it requires the use of a PC. The problem is that if you take 1,000 PC's of 1,000 randomly selected people, then you can expect to see 1,000 different software and hardware configurations, and a good number of them won't support VoIP well if at all. That being the case, magicJack won't work for everyone. Not all broadband connections are "created equal" either, but that's just the nature of VoIP as opposed to being a problem with magicJack. If you've never used VoIP before on your existing broadband connection, you should first try something like Skype or Gizmo (softphones) just to verify that your PC/broadband setup works well for VoIP; they're free so all it will take is a little time.

On the other hand, a nice feature of a USB-connected telephony device is the potential interface with a desktop or even web-based address book. Imagine some Google gadget providing a link between the magicJack and, say, GrandCentral or even your Gmail contacts; perhaps a Thunderbird extension that interfaces with magicJack. Yeah, magicJack seems to have a Contacts list, but that's not where I want to keep my contacts, so it's not of much use to me.

    MagicJack used with dialup service?

Without reading the entire MagicJack website I'm hoping for quick direction from MagicJack users; My elderly parents who cannot get broadband service would like to look into getting MagicJack. They only have access to a VERY slow dialup line (14 kps). Will MagicJack be good for them?

    Absolutely not

. . . yeah, immediately after I posted the question I found out through various other forums that although it might "work" it would be sketchy at best.

On 14.4? No. (I still have some old 14.4 modems--haven't used them in 15 years, except for the occasional FAX.)

Interestingly, the magicJack site says that magicJack-to-magicJack calls *may* work over dial-up, though I'm sure they're talking about 56k. Back in the 90's I actually used VoIP, briefly, with dial-up (just to play around with it). It did work... badly, but it did work. I wouldn't recommend it; when you're thinking VoIP, think broadband.

Yes, I remember early 90's internet phone, I too dabbled with it and found that it worked, albeit choppy. Upstate NY (mountain regions) don't get DSL or Cable, so my parents are able to use their internet for basically email and long bouts of meditation while watching the CNN page download.

Get real people. I am going to order the device and try it. From what I read and understand about it is---$39.95 for the device, $19.95 for year of service, total $60.00. All you complainers out there, get real. You can't fill your car with gas for $60.00.

    Re: magicjack

supposedly the first year is free, so it's only $47.00 with the shipping...I haven't ordered yet...tried to but it never showed up on my records or theirs...a little nervous about it now, but I sure agree with you on the money issue...it's about the same as half a tank of gas, so saving the money and using it on gas is a good thought for me

You can get unlimited calls to anywhere in the USA, for only $20 a year, and that includes a local phone number. You get several features, that you see on a landline phone, such as caller id, call waiting, voicemail etc. If you are like me, then you can find out your Sip Credentials, and use a ATA (analog telephone adapter), and not be bothered with having your pc on all the time. I use a PAP2 that I got off ebay for $35 shipped. There is a great support forum here, to help you with almost anything you need, when it comes to the MagicJack.

This is where I figured out how to obtain my Sip Credentials, so I could use any Sip supported hardware or software. My order arrived, 4 days after I ordered, and I did not use express shipping, which was a few bucks extra. They will leave a pending charge, that should disappear within a few days, when you order the 30-day trial. The only down side I see so far, is the customer support, but I have yet to have to contact them, but have heard terrible things. No other provider offers unlimited calling within the USA, for under $20 a year, so this is a great value.
