I have had MJ service for several years. In the beginning somewhat liked the service, there was not much comparable around. Currently, the costs are much higher than years ago. Free call forwarding not available any more, many exchanges cannot be reached or only for additional charge, hidden fees and phony ' regulatory charges'. Company extremely deceptive, unpleasant to do business with. Call quality varies, from very good to substandard, sometimes changes during one longer call. Service unreliable. Customer service miserable, technical support fully worthless. With the choices available these days, there is absolutely no reason to settle for Magic Jack.

webcol join:2005-03-01 Miami, FL | MagicJack you get what you paid for The call forwarding feature is still active, it is now a hidden feature. What disappoints me most about MagicJack is that it won´t let you renew the service as it is supposed. They invent any excuse not to renew the service, in many occassions they said they will sent you an e-mail after putting your account under review, but they don´t. I see more lawsuits coming if MagicJack don´t let renew the USD 70 dollar device.

One of my two adapters recently died. I wasn't too upset, as I have had them for nearly five years, and purchased 5 years of service for each when I bought them. Service has been okay, working well most of the time. People calling me never worked very well, and I tried the adapters in a number of different ISPs and computers.
Anyway, I bought the new PLUS model, received it several days after ordering, and called MJ to transfer my number from the old unit that died. A short time later it was done, and as we were finishing up, I asked if my nearly $40 in international long distance had also been transferred. The rep then stated that the international long distance credit does not transfer, and per the TOS (Terms Of Service, or the small print you never read), MAGIC JACK KEEPS THE MONEY.
Bye Bye Magic Jack. I will not be renewing either of my numbers when they expire. Prior to this incident, I would have rated you *** of 5 stars. Now you are * of 5 stars.

I wanted magic jack for 2 reasons: cheap, and keep my own number. They could not get my own number. I had already paid by card. they refused a refund of any amount even though I was within their 30 day refund window. No phone number to call. a long drawn out process getting to chat and then communication with the representative got me no where. At one point they said they would refund and could take 30 days and the refund never came. I filed a complaint with the Florida Attorney General today. 09 04 2012 Ripped me off for $195 I never used the service!

Re: MagicJack.ca is ripping people off
I had a magic jack that I didn't use much at home in Canada but seemed to work OK when I did use it. However I thought the whole premise was that you could also take it with you if travelling and people could call you on a local number while you were out of country. I took it to Panama and when I tried to pay for another year, it took all my info then wouldn't work. Tried again with another credit card, on and on. Spent much of my two week holiday running to my friends house to try to get it to work so I could make some necessary business calls to home. I was online with the broken english chat customer service people for literally hours instead of enjoying my holiday. They would keep promising to have their higher customer service people look into it. After many hours of this I gave up. Was going to leave it for my friends that live in Panama but brought it back in hopes to resolve this. found the Canada rep address in Hamilton which is where I live and it is a closed up warehouse with only delivery stickers on the door and a for sale sign. Haven't heard back from the main customer service people nor the Canadian rep. since my pleas in April.
Would have loved to leave it for my friends and buy another for myself but what's the point if the damn thing can't be reloaded and absolutely no customer service.

I updated my review to reflect a worse value now that the price has gone up and they don't allow you to connect to more and more phone numbers. The call quality went down considerably as well. The increase of price and decrease of the service itself no longer makes MJ a good value. I am not a customer anymore as of April and don't plan on ever returning.

I couldn't really rate tech support - I've never contacted them. The biggest problem I have is that the computer has to be on to use this service. And not only that, the software has been very buggy for me and has interfered with other applications I run on the computer. I have ordered a cheap sub $100 computer to just run magicJack to combat this problem. I'm somewhat computer savvy and the "cost to problems ratio" has been more than worth it to me, especially since I have seen constant improvement. And honestly, the problems are nowhere as much of an issue as those I had with Vonage when I joined up with them when they had only been around for about six months.
Problems with the quality of the service/connections I've had: 1) Software updates itself then doesn't work until I manually restart it; 2) rogue DTMF tones (seems to have been fixed with a recent update); 3) A few times a week someone will call but the call doesn't come through; 4) Calls drop 2-3 times per month; 5) Though not often, the sound quality when connected goes to pot; 6) It almost seems like the service is half duplex instead of full. While this is not the case, I can rarely truly hear what the other party says if I'm talking and vice versa. It works well enough to know they said SOMETHING though.
I use MJ for my only phone line and for $20/yr ($50 for the first year) it's more than worth the price. Would I pay $20 or even $10 per MONTH? No way. But for the price, I'm happy.

INITIAL REVIEW: 10/12/2008
The best things about having a magicjack so far in the last year or two that I've been using it has been: 1. when I was able to hack the sipinfo, which was subsquently taken away in an update they made to the USB device. 2. when my brother made use of the device with his laptop while in japan 3. being able to use it as a softphone on a PC for a while was useful with Xlite 4. I have had good results with some PC's I used it with as a FAX line where many other voip solutions I used had failed I am planning to rely on my magicjack less now and may have to rethink renewing when my contract comes up since G5+GV+ATA gets me almost the same thing except for the faxing capability for an even cheaper price and I don't have to leave one of my computers running 24/7 in order to have the MJ receive calls. Hopefully, they will update MJ with newer features before my contract renewal comes up to give me more reason to keep my MJ since paying $60 for 5 years would be worth it just to have the MJ as a cheap backup voip solution.
UPDATE: 4/28/2011 Barely use the magicjack anymore as call quality has gone down in the last few years on it, it's still a decent value but having to be stuck running a PC has made it even less useful over time and I wish I had not paid for the 5 years. If I was going to get a VoIP solution today, I'd be ordering a NetTalk Duo instead.
UPDATE: 10/18/2011 I found that there is now magictalk.com to download on my computer and an app for my iPhone for magicjack. This helps to make the 5 years I paid suck a little less since I can now use the magicjack app with my account. If there was a cheap way to use the new HW magicjack plus version (no computer needed) with my existing account I would actually pay a little more to buy the new device but as it is I think you can only use the new magicjack plus version is you buy a new device with a new account and can't carry over the 5 years you bought before. I'm bringing down the "value for money" rating in my review and increasing the rating I gave for "ease of installation" as that's really the only area magicjack deserves a somewhat high rating.
UPDATE: 6/04/2012 MagicJack finally allows carrying over your purchased years from your original MJ USB dongle to the new MJ plus: »Old Magic Jack to Magic Jack Plus???
And I can repurpose the old MJ USB dongle with GoogleVoice using GVJack: »"GVJack App" Converts MJ Dongles To Google Voice
Checking through my emails I realized I paid for a 4-year rather the a 5 year extension through the "gold plan" claim code: »www.magicjacksupport.com/wow-gol···585.html
So my 5 year total at this point is really for $44 + 20 + $45 which is like $109 for 5 years until 10/12/2014 and so my total monthly cost is still about $2-3 bucks for the MJ dongle, then use through the hacked Xlite/softphone, then through the iPhone app, and finally through the now upgraded MJ Plus.

MagicJack is a good idea but the company that's behind it is terrible.
Let's see... dropped calls, appalling call quality, misleading advertising, total absence of customer service (the best you can hope is a "live chat" that will have you wait forever for responses or an email "support" service that's beyond inept), insufficient bandwidth (you'll get lots of fast-busy signals if you call abroad), mandatory adware that comes included in their software, calls are charged as soon as you start dialing (you should only be charged for actual call time once the connection has been established, not for when you dial or when the line is ringing), and finally their web site which provides no really useful information. This is a 100% unresponsive company.
Adding insult to injury, when the software of the MagicJack gadget runs afoul (it does happen often) you are automatically redirected to the MagicJack home page, where an aggravating video of the daughter of the CEO speaking in an affected tone of her Dad the inventor of the MagicJack and her two puppies Magic and Jack plays automatically and will finish to make your day time and time again...
PASS ON THIS LOUSY COMPANY, THERE ARE OTHER, MUCH BETTER VOIP SERVICE PROVIDERS OUT THERE!!!

Magic Jack customer service is very bad. infact they are looters. they asked me to pay $9.95 for the shipping for my majic jack, but they charged to my account $14.25. when i contacted them they told that they told me $9.95 by the mistake of their customer representative. rap cut the chat with me telling that nothing can be done now. I will never recommend Majic jack. I have disconnected my connection. Their sent majic jack is lying unused with me. dont trust majic jack.

First they tell me MagicJack won't work with IE9, and to roll back to IE8, but they wont offer me a credit for my NO SERVICE with IE9. There is NO mention of IE9 not working anywhere on their web site. Then they say that they can make IE9 work, if they log in to my computer and change my computer settings, but they wont tell me what the settings to my computer will be. I asked repeatedly for a list of computer settings, but they WOULD NOT offer them to me. I will not compromise my computer security for phone service. NO CREDIT for NO SERVICE and NO LIST of SETTINGS, WHAT are THEY tiring to HIDE?

| | Avoid Magic Jack at all costs. Purchased Canadian Magic Jack when they first were available - promised a Canadian number within DAYS. Paid $59.00 + a one year subscription. It worked 50 percent of the time. They promised a replacement. While I waited, I bought a second year, then a week later the magic jack was not recognized by any computer. Spent hours on the phone - was being issued a replacement 3 times, never was sent. Promised each time, never sent. They confirmed they did not send the replacements. I was not refunded the second year, and when I asked why I was lied to about getting the Canadian number - they said I could now have one for $150.
All and all it was a good idea, but the sales team lies and the help department will tell you anything to get you to go away. Used a little bit, real cost was higher than others.
