Of course this is several months after I go the service. I do remember the installer actually showing up an hour early. Wouldn't have been much of an issue, but I was taking off work and almost missed the tech. Thankfully I live about 3 miles away and I was able to catch the call and work out leaving then. Service was installed and I can only think of 2 maybe 3 instances of being down. And 2 of those times were right after power outages in the area. And service was restored in less than 8hrs-by the next day. It actually seemed to be within 4hrs. Seemed to be on par with what I had with Charter in Edwardsville, IL.

I did supply my own modem and router. Other than being charged for it for a month, a call to customer service did clear it up.

Most recently, I did lose internet service (reliably) for a day after maintenance towards the impending DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade. Service would run for 5-10 minutes then go down. After a few more minutes, the modem would reestablish a connection and go down again. Hadn't been home to really troubleshoot, but contacted Newwave via their twitter feed-@newwaveinsider and is suppose to have it resolved this morning-assuming new config file, but didn't get that info for sure.

BTW-got their basic internet package with basic expanded cable

EDIT:I've heard plenty of people complaining about not having reliable connection with Newwave in my town. I can't be sure what their issues have been, but really don't doubt their validity. Overall, I've been happy with the service and satisfied with the resolution of problem when I've had them. I can say for sure that their customer service is MUCH better to deal with than Charter's or ATT's.

We ordered a bundle. Cable tv. unlimited phone (voip) and ten meg intrnet. The install was painless with a fairly decent Aaris modem. Only other option here where I live is AT&T and they wanted a bit more but no tv. Upload speed is very slow but overall we are happy.

Update: Newwave is being bought by Time Warner (presumably). The customer service is hit and miss..I ordered a wireless modem for my small network and the modem has no way for me to log in to even look at the settings. Newwave will not respond to my support emails. Newwave is the only isp in my town with the exception of ATT, and I am not going that route. I can only hope my connection is secure. Common sense browsing and updated security software is by all means a good bet for this company.

I have two choices of broadband, at my location. If I were rich, I'd have three. (But that ain't happened yet)
Windstream, and NewWave Communications offer broadband in my area.

I had Windstream DSL service, 3Megs down, 384kb up. I had a lot of disconnects, not getting the download speed advertised (And I live in the city, which is where there located)

I contacted customer service, several times before I cut my connection with them. Trying to get them to fix my service. There techs suck. Customer service is good. But only in a pseudo manner. (They seem like they're trying to improve. But they have a long way to go, another words, getting better techs)

On my last day.. when I was talking to them and telling them the reason I was not happy with there service. Like I mention above. Disconnects, and not getting the speed I was paying for. After I get through telling them this. They say. "Do you want to sign up for the 6meg service dsl in your area?"

Like they didn't hear me or something. That's really annoying and frustrating on my part as a customer. Because I am helpless.(well not completely, if not satisfied I take my business else where) The only thing I can do is make sure the lines in my house are in great shape.. and that everything is connected correctly on my end. And that's that....

SO I switched over to NewWaveCommunications.
The speed I ordered was the 6d/1up package.(gamer package) It cost me 45$ a month.
The order process was painless. The only thing you have to do, is pay up front. That's how they work. You pay a month ahead, instead of a month behind like most services.
That went pretty smooth.
I did not sign up for a contract, being as if they were possibly as worse as Windstream, or Worse yet, bad as Charter which was the previous cable co.
I pay a 5 dollar a month modem rental fee.(I find the modem rental fee to be BS)

I believe in my area, they are running Docsis 2.0

The tech came when scheduled, really didn't talk much. And did not seem to be informed about what he was actually doing. He basically had a device to check the signal. Some COAX cable crimper's, and went at it. I was asking questions trying to see what he was doing etc.. and asked him about the upload speeds, etc.. and hes like "durr"

But none the less. He hooked up the modem, and called it in.. I was good to go. He had to drive down the street to connect my cable at the junction box, which added to the install time. Which was about 1hr total. He was waiting for the order to go through.

(Mind you, I had to drill a hole through a block wall) Which I am sure if he had to do, would of added time and mess. SO I went ahead and took care of that on my own.

RCA Modem by Thomson was supplied. No software was installed on my pc. (Like with Windstream)

Overall I am satisfied, download speeds are excellent 93% of the time.
My experience on xbox live has improved. My multiplayer games are not dropping, lag has decreased greatly...

And I have only had one hickup.. and that is not being able to pay my bill online. I don't know what the crap is going on. But I cannot access there website for some reason in either firefox or Internet Explorer off of the computer I use. I am sure its on my end somehow. ( I have checked everything I know of... but no luck, not even google has been able to help me out so far)

The thing that stood out the most, was the fact I could get a fast speed from them. And the upload speed I get, as far as I am from them distance wise. I am 4.5 miles from them. So this is awesome. I was 1.5 miles from Windstream and could only get the lousy speed I got, and service. (Ironically, just as I decided to disconnect, Windstream all of a sudden had available in my area 6 meg down, but there upload speed still sucked. And the service itself, the disconnects I mentioned.. really didn't make it worth dealing with them anymore. Maybe if I were a business they would of tried to work with me more. I don't honestly know.)

There were some Negatives though with the install process with NewWave, and I hate to focus on them, but I am going to be real about it.

The techs inability to answer my questions. He basically, seemed like the only thing he was capable of was, calling in the order, and that was that. IF your installing a new service into someones house, you should be able to at least answer some basic, what if, how to, questions, related to the service.( I forget what I was asking at the time)

And he didn't really communicate with me on what he was doing. And since its my house, it would of been nice if he did that.

Again, its worth the money. I'm satisfied right now.

I have had the service now for 5+ months and its been a good journey so far. I hope it continues to only get better.

Well its now 3/07/10

I have to say one thing has been rock solid with NewWaveCommuincations is the reliability. My Connection has been rock solid, and I have to say I love that.

My speed has dropped slightly though, and I have actually had some lag issues. Which sucks, but its not nearly as much as happened with Windstream. I wish that I could have my cake and eat it to... But I'd probably have to move to another state where Fiber was offered. Or find some way to fund a business connection.

Also my bill has went up from 45 to 56 dollars a month. I wish it had stayed at 45.. but owell.

10-02-10

What can I say, Newwave has continued to have consistent quality where I live. My service has been up. Speeds have remained consistent. Still not getting what I pay for as far as upload goes. I am satisfied. But to note, satisfied and happy are two different things.

I did have one problem paying my bill online. There site went down or something.. but the lady at the main office building.. where I had to go pay my bill, and customer service acted like the site was up. So I have no clue what happened as far as that goes. I just know every time I tried to get on there.. it wouldn't show up for me on my computer.

I have had this service w/ New Wave now for 4 months. In my area its either Frontier ADSL, Satellite, or New Wave. And knowing the reliability factor of the 3, I will go w/ New Wave. But I can not in good faith give them a glowing review.

First off is the distance from my physical local to their CO, which is in Taylorville,IL. This has caused some concern w/ me in the overall speed category. I am currently subscribed to their 10/1 package. And on a good day I might see half of the speeds I am supposed to be getting. And pretty deplorable to charge an additional $10 a month for 'their gamer package ' just to try and get 1 Mbps upload.

Another factor is that when this was installed, the tech they assigned to install took my concerns w/ such a grain of salt it was like a total insult to my intelligence.I point blank asked the Tech if he was installing a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and he said no its a 2.0 modem as their systems are not set up for 3.0 service. And upon further inquiry to this tech as to when they (New Wave) would be doing upgrades to 3.0, he could not even answer and hurriedly check to see that everything was working and promptly left. Made me feel like I was the bad guy for wanting answers to something that would be vital to know about.

I went w/ their only package to offer any kind of discount and so have their VOIP and cable also. The cable side has been stable. But the VOIP service has alot to be desired for. As I have found out through their own fine print on my bill. The VOIP service is actually Big River Telephone. So they are 3rd partying a service.. Sad is all I can say about it. For my son's school to call me (which BTW is less than 2 blocks from my residence) it is a long distance call.

.

I have had recently in the last month two outages in my internet. Both times its was system wide as the tech on the phone told me.. I think their right hand does not know what the left hand is doing

.

Personally, if their was an alternative cable broadband option in my area I would change service providers. But since I am in the middle of a rural area no chance of that ever happening....

Will update this as time progresses, maybe they might pull a proverbial rabbit out of their hat and upgrade... Its a dream and a possible hope. But its better than the alternatives..

I am rather picky about my broadband provider, given that I manage broadband networks for a living. I expect a lot more from tech support than just "reboot your modem" or "it must be your PC". It is my job to know when the problem is on my end.

This company has (more than once) changed the package bandwidth without notification. I paid for a 768k upstream for over a year when the available speed was 512k AFTER they changed the package. There was NO NOTICE sent out to let customers know this was done. In order to get back to 768k, I was told I had to purchase an ADDITIONAL PACKAGE. Their price is already too high for what they offer. I don't expect $30 for 10M/1M connection, but I think $60 is pretty high.

Their network experiences outages at least once per month. These outages can range from a few minutes to ( more often ) over 3 hours.

As soon as there is a good option that will support my voip needs, I will switch. I have had it with this company and will NOT be using them much longer.

Newwave

I agree if you need help call your mom she will have more info. Ask anyone in town if they get the basic 10 meg down, nobody does. They should be reported to the Attorney General of Illinois. I just wish Madison Communications were our provider. My dad has them and they have the best customer support I have ever seen and their techs always score high at the cable testing conferences. I had better internet from Frontier telephone.

I just had this set-up today (9-25-09) so hopefully I will update monthly.

first speed test. supposed to be 10meg.
other option was Royalle Communication. I heard they are good but they couldn't let me have an email/web server yet. They are wireless thru our town and area. great idea!!!

12-13-09 - I have done numerous speed tests thru Newwave's speed test and BBR's speed test, getting different results. Even thru Newwave's network I only get Download Speed: 5691 kbps (711.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 843 kbps (105.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Sunday, December 13, 2009 9:13:29 AM

Should be 10 down 1 up.

I live in a rural area that is over 18000 feet from the Verizon CO and yet still in city limits, so our single crack at broadband service is from New Wave Communications. They bought this area out from Charter in 2006.

They have worked in a commendable fashion in order to upgrade service for this area. I get 6 mbps up/ 384 down in the sticks. Total price is $45 a month, order and install was fairly easy, and our Ambit cable modem has worked flawlessly.

I only wish that we would have faster upload speeds, but they are coming soon. Overall, they have served well. Being a local company, I think they have worked to provide a good service to a rural community. I would not hesitate to recommend New Wave to those who live in a New Wave territory.

First of all i never heard of New wave before coming to this side of IL and this was the better deal than other available provider verizon. First of all i have to say download speed is exceptional, i get consistent 4.5 Mbps+, sometimes over 5 Mbps. even though package included speed is 3 Mbps. Upload speed is quite reasonable - around 350 Kbps+. also higher than 256 Kbps that was ordered. i would say it's great value for money. i payed almost same amount for 1.5 Mbps/256 Kbps DSL. Tech support is really friendly and the only big problem i had was repaired by tech guy in couple of hours after i called the support center. The only complaint i have (had) the occasional outage, that happens for 1-2 hours/week. but for last 3-4 week everything looks fine. i would recommend this ISP to everyone.
