Hickorytech is in constant competition with the local cable company for broadband customers. This competition has helped push Hickorytech's DSL service to remain faster than what the cable company offers. The DSL service is a bit more expensive than the cable offerings which is offset by the reliability of the connection.

Being one of the first in the area to obtain DSL service, I am lucky to have had an inside installation performed. New installations are of the "user performed" variety which limits the phone company's liability/responsibility to check in-home connection problems. Over the last several years I've had to have the technicians stop by the house three times; twice the in-home portion was not needed, as something in the downtown switch room went bad and they had to replace something there (despite my efforts to tell them nothing in the house was bad, they insisted on checking the internal lines/systems anyway). Once the phone line from my home to the local "box" was found to be bad (noisy), and they dug a trench and laid new line from my home to the box. No charge to me, but I had to put up with a rather squiggly trench diagonally across my back yard. It will be a pain to find that line's path if I ever decide to build something in the back yard requiring the digging of a footing.

The reliability of the service has been outstanding, with only the three issues mentioned above over the course of several years. I highly recommend HickoryTech's DSL service to friends and family looking for a local broadband solution.
