I ordered VOIPo on October 2nd. Got errors saying there was a problem processing your request. Called them up, and used a different card. Unit arrived 3 days later. Had some initial problems, most notably they were sending emails to the wrong email address. There was a typo in their backend database, and it took a while to get it corrected, but I finally got it corrected today. I am in the process of porting my number.

--- update 10/15/09 ---
my number will be ported on the 28th. Wish me luck!

--- update 10/29/09 ---

Good Call Quality So Far - Multiple Servers around the Country
Used Hardware poorly shipped. Web Interface is strictly 3rd rate
Good Basic Voip - Recommended

Longtime Hostgator, customer 5+ years - decided to give Voipo a chance.

Good Points:

- Good to Excellent call quality. I could hear the difference right from the dial tone. Multiple servers located throughout the country enables customers a choice of routing options best for their isp/geographic location.

- Have spoken to 4 techs so far for various preparations. 3 were polite and friendly. One was clearly not happy, not obnoxious mind you ..... but he was clearly not a happy to be there that day.

- Linksys ATA seems to be clearly superior to Grand-stream junk.

- Good Feature set, comparable to other voip leaders.

Bad Points::

- Shipped used hardware that came in 3 pieces. Package had no protective material whatsoever. This seems to be a common issue with Voipo and should be addressed immediately. Had to get a hold of tech support to have a new ATA sent out, snap together old ATA, print labels, go to post office and generally waste my time....

- New ATA was shipped in exactly the same way (no packing material) but managed to survive the trip this time. However power adapter for the Linksys ATA was only 2 feet long ..... come on guys lets get with the program, its 2010.

- All in all first impressions from the receipt of hardware DO NOT inspire confidence and this area should be worked on asap. First impressions of a new product or service are incredibly important and in this area Voipo is severely lacking. I would love to see the option to buy a NEW papt2 that is locked to Voipo and could be unlocked later should service with the company be terminated for whatever reason. Maybe include a nifty usb adapter such as PP does.

- Linksys RT31P2-NA is old (discontinued) and came with firmware that was 6 versions behind the current from 2006. I asked tech support permission to upgrade it but was denied. Its also bloody huge so potential customers may want to keep that in mind. I would have much preferred a PapT2

- No downloadable softphone

- Web interface is a disgrace for 2010. Any first year web design student could do better. In this regard they should just straight out copy their rival PP and just change the colors scheme to fit their needs. Web panel does work but it is not documented AT ALL and this SEVERELY limits its functionality. Also some of the navigation can be tricky. Give it a 2 out of 10 max. See above about first impressions.

- I am an advanced user and tried to do as much of the legwork as possible before my service became active. This included trying to provision my modem for the East Coast, Washington DC server (main reason I selected Voipo), I called in + emailed and was promised that it was taken care of. However when I called in today on an unrelated matter and asked them to check where I was provisioned, I was told I was hooked into Dallas TX. The tech promptly fixed it, but again its these little things that don't inspire confidence. Would love to see something in the v panel that would let me know where I am connected and allow me to change servers if I so required.

Update August 1, 2010

Gave Voipo the old 30 day trial. Generally pleased with the level of service and call quality was excellent. Had no dropped calls except for the last few days before I ported out (not going to blame them for that - porting can be funny) call quality for me on the Washington server was EXCELLENT. Tim of Voipo was very responsive and honest in his assessment of what was best for my needs. After speaking with him on the Voipo Forums (great idea) I have decided to go BYOD and pay as you go, as an advanced user I wanted more control, but I have already recommended the service to friends and family. The only thing that I would like to see Voip do is get more server locations and make the default ata a Linksys/Cisco/Sapura SPA 2102

Aside from this I rate them EXCELLENT as an all in one solution.

Bottom line:

The ATA box they send is big, ugly and used = But it works as advertised.

Call quality is superb if you have a steady connection and they offer 3x as many server locations as PhonePower.

Tech support is friendly and efficient. Don't blame your connection for everything and don't treat you like a moron. Web interface is being redesigned. Halej bloody leuya!

9 Jun 2010: well, after 4 years of Vonage, I switched to VOIPo - tired of paying ever-increasing rates hidden in fees. For $135 a year pre-paid, I get everything Vonage gave me, plus "standard" hardware, a softphone, per-call block, and lots of other goodies.

The call quality is good, not great; certainly ok for what I need. Same for the web portal - but I'm only on there a couple times a month. The nice thing is that there are no hidden charges - VOIPo was upfront about what it would cost, and it's a great deal.

More later, but I'm digging the softphone - using Telephone.app for my mac and Softphone from Acrobits for my iPhone. It works well over wifi but not so good over 3G. Oh well.

Cheap, Reliable, Ported Number from Vonage
False Ads on their Website, a Countdown timer that keeps resetting
Although they lack some of the Polish you get with Vonage, this is good stuff for the money

I was a long time Vonage customer on their 500 minute plan. Towards the end though it felt like every bill I got from Vonage was different from the month before because they kept changing their 'un-fees' and changed the price of their 500 minute plan. My Wife and I don't talk to much on the phone, and so far the baby hasn't learned to make any calls so all I wanted is something cheap that gave me an easy way to make calls while at home, while having a phone number to give to companies to avoid them calling my cell.

Along came Voipo, although I find their website to be a little unprofessional with the always resetting countdown timer I went ahead and moved forward with them anyway. At first glance their web interface felt lacking compared to what I been using with Vonage. it lacked the 'Polish', and seemed difficult to find where all the different settings were including several features under a beta category. But hey if the service works, I don't really care to much how polished the web site is. The only feature they have that I have found worthless is the simultaneous ring. I used this all the time when I was expecting a phone call while with Vonage but pretty much every time I have used it with Voipo it ends up in Voicemail as by the time my phone rings and I accept the call its too late.

Overall though the service has been good. I have contacted tech support twice and both times provided a quick resolution to my problem. I was having some random issues where the calls coming in would goto voice mail, I had to tweak some firewall settings something I never had to do with Vonage. I have recommended the service to a friend and my parents so I think its safe to say that overall I'm a happy customer.

Previously I had Vonage for several years and was satisfied. I dropped them because I did not need VOIP phone lines for a while; no fault of their own.

Recently I looked into providers and was going to go back to Vonage but decided to give VOIPO a shot based on their cheap price and good reviews here at dslreports.

The service has been good. I got up and running right away. I had one issue with call quality that was eventually traced to the phone I was using that did not like the IP line. It works fine on a POTS line. But, their support was right there and sent me a new modem to swap even though we both figured that was not the issue. I got a new handset and now call quality is clear as a landline, better than cell.

Not only that but their support guys are Americans. They are good and can take a joke. Not one of them has said: '..so mr scott you agree that have we solved your solution to your problem today...' You cannot discount how quickly you can figure stuff out when communications are native.

Early on they had an issue billing my paypal account but it all got fixed.

For half the price of Vonage they are a deal.

Update March 2010: The service has never gotten to the quality/reliability level of Vonage. It works, usually, but when it is having problems the problems are an annoyance. At the moment I deem it 60% of a POTS line and about 80% of what I experienced with Vonage. The problems are fail to connect, long connect times, and dropped calls. They are not overwhelming but just often enough to make you cuss.

I have reduced my ratings accordingly and am still on a month to month.

Udpdate April 2010: As suggested I contacted support and as has been my experience I got excellent support. I was already on an east coast server. The tech suggested that I configure a static IP for the IP/Phone Adaptor and emailed separate documentation.

In my opinion that documentation should be included in the installation package and recommended to users that have a router.

I did that and service is much more stable now. I adjusted my ratings back up. I am still on a month to month but am now getting confident enough to buy a contract.

Are you on VOIPo's East Coast SIP Servers?

If not, you should just chat with tech support ask to be moved over.. it takes only a few minutes to do it.

For me, it made a huge difference in call quality versus being routed to VOIPo Central (Dallas).

Check your network config

Make sure you don't have a switch or router causing problems between the ATA and your internet connection. I had an old Linksys 10/100 switch causing incoming call problems. Once removed, it's rock solid. I finally moved the ATA behind my m0n0wall with QOS and it sounds better than a landline. Don't give up, support will figure it out.

Router

Thanks for the suggestion. I am behind a router but that made no difference with Vonage. There are lots of routers between me and the end point so I can't get too excited about an IP service that does not like routers.

Yesterday calls I did not answer did not get picked up by voicemail. That should not be a router issue.

However, their support has been good in the past so I will give them a shout.

I have been using HostGator for my web hosting for more than a year without a problem. Everyone I know who uses HostGator thinks its great. When they introduced VOIPo I figured try it. I was not dissapointed. The VOIP box was free, no rebate required, could have had it up and running in less than 10 days but I delayed in getting them the forms required for porting my number to VOIPo. They were great at reminding me to send it in.

Was amazed that when I got the email that the switch will "happen tomorrow at about 11:30 CST" it really did happen and VOIPo worked from day one. Have had it for six weeks and have never regretted it. No one has ever commented on call quality.

Look for special offers. I received a free Toll Free fax number for the first year.

I decided that after many years of AT&T (was Bellsouth) DSL service that I would try out Comcast HSI for double the speed with a year promo that dropped the price lower than my DSL line. This change was a success and left me with no real reason to continue paying the high prices for my telephone line from AT&T.

I browsed the VOIP forums here looking for reviews of the many companies and found VOIPo to be highly regarded as well as having an active CEO in the community providing support and giving updates on the service. I found this to be the number one reason I chose VOIPo, besides the comfort knowing their backed by one of the leading providers of Web Hosting (Host Gator) with sales in the millions of dollars.

The setup process was simple, they provided a Linksys RT31P2 that has 2 phone ports available. This worked great with my Linksys cable modem, and Linksys wireless router.

Call quality is superb, the amount of features is excellent, and though I don't call internationally much the 60 minutes of free international calling is a nice perk. After about a week of service, I still haven't had any issues, therefore I'm 100% satisfied. I will update this review quarterly as I continue to evaluate the service. So far, I recommend VOIPo to family and friends.
