I considered Clearwire and two local WISPs as alternatives to Hughes satellite. Clearwire had made quite a push in the area, but was not available at the time. I had spoken with several pleased customers of OCSNet and that tipped the scale.
OCS offers wireless plans from $49.95. I chose a plan for $79.95 which includes a 1.5Mb (max, both directions) connection and dialup hours. The connection has consistently performed well, and almost without exception at the full promised speed. Uptime has been excellent.
While OCS seemed surprisingly uneager for business, once I got a site survey done and a tower erected, installation was quick and done by a fellow who knew his job well. Although (I believe) we dont have good LOS, the link still tested to 5Mb with 0.1% packet loss. The gear on our end is 2.4 MHz Trango, with an external antenna added to the muffin radio up on the mast.
There has been little reason to deal with support, but the company has been very responsive to inquiries. I think a person could become accustomed to working with a company thats not just in the same time zone, but just down the road a ways.
Edit: After some 2-1/2 years I'm still pleased.
