NOTE: This is a review of Vbuzzer made in 2023. In 2017 Vbuzzer was acquired by VoIPMuch and no longer is owned by SoftRoute. This is NOT the same VBuzzer of many of the negative reviews here from years ago.

Price is $5.99 USD with no added taxes nor hidden fees in USA. I suspect Canadian Users will have to pay tax.

I have spent the last year testing and several VoIP providers for residential use. As I once started and ran a VoIP service for several years, I have a good idea of what to look for. I was considering VoIPMuch then someone pointed out that VBuzzer was owned by VoIPMuch and offered a lower monthly price.

At first I was concerned because VBuzzer's servers seem to be in Ontario(?) and was worried about ping time. My ping from this particular network in Oregon to VBuzzer Ontario server is 83ms

I tried to use the VBuzzer provided "Real Softphone" for Android But was not able to get audio in either direction at first. Incoming calls would ring but could hear nothing. Outbound calls seemed to produce a fake ring-back only (trilling sound). I suppose this could be incompatibility with my android device. or Network. A quick call to VBuzzer and they changed the RTP to UDP and now I can connect with this softphone. This softphone includes push which saves battery. I have noted there is a significant audio delay from the PSTN to the softphone (incoming to softphone) . The audio the other way is significantly less delayed. With the real softphone , I am unable to connect to +1 804 222 1111 which is a test number. I get trilling sound and never connects . I was able to connect to this number from Zoiper and VBuzzer.

UPDATE
It seems the VBuzzer provided app Real VoIP for Android does not ring reliably when the screen is off.

I have also used Zoiper. With ZoIPer I was able to use the QR code to configure ZoIPer. They say the QR code is for their own "Real Softphone" but worked fine on ZoIPer. I have had some issues with ZoIPer unregistering when the phone has not been used but I suspect enabling the push proxy might fix this but that requires paying more money

In the near future I will test with an ATA and post results here.

Vbuzzerr has just awful number selection and every number they have ever issued me was an overlay area code despite numbers being plentiful in the original area code. Luckily I had planned to Port in already. For instance when I expected a 360 area code I was provided an overlay 564 area code for same area (did not know this even existed) Likewise they have no Portland Area 503 numbers and if you select Portland Oregon you can not see any numbers they just pick one and assign it at random and probably the overlay 971 . They do not tell you nor can you change the city selection like select Charbonneau, Beaverton, Oregon City or Gresham which may (or may not) have 503 numbers available. Those cities are also "local" calling to the Portland area. When I say "Portland" number it kind of includes those outlying areas as most newer prefixes in 503 area code are not geographically tied. Cell phone providers often provide Beaverton, Gresham or other outlying area numbers when a user wants a Portland number for instance.

-------UPDATE--------
At this point I have three accounts on VBuzzer. All accounts are using Grandstream HT802 adapters. I also ported three numbers in. One thing impressed me was that call setup time is VERY FAST compared to VoIP.ms. On VoIP.ms many USA calls took a few seconds to set up , and calls to Mexico took several seconds on VoIP.ms compared to super fast on Vbuzzer. I have had to constantly complain about Mexico calls to VoIP.ms over the years! They usually fix it then switch routes again later it seems

With the use of the Grandstream, I have no substantial delay in xmit nor receive audio. The latency seems very good despite my distance from their server.

Let us touch on the issue of support. As I have been porting multiple numbers all with different service addresses my first note is that support chat does not use the account you reference when starting the chat. I guess they do not pay attention to the information you submit when starting the chat. As if that is not bad enough they later ignore details you provide often requiring you to explain and re-explain , but they usually do get things resolved.

One of the multiple DIDs I ported in without explanation took a lot of time before even receiving any port status. Normally this particular losing provider sends me a Port attempt success/fail email which I did not get It was as if VBuzzer was sitting on the port till I stirred the pot 9 days after submission. You would think it logical they would not sit on my port for more than a week, but they did so for 9 days.

I am also downgrading their web site as it seems there are certain "features" that do not work and may never be active like "Voicemail Settings - Coming Soon". Promised "coming soon" kinds of services that never arrive is a bad sign and affects this provider's credibility. On some accounts, sometimes, the incoming calls do not show, although this may have to do more with a pending port it should be part of the process. Another problem with their web site are certain ambiguities. When I went to port my first number there was a charge published but turned out it was free. They also are not very clear about the 60 Minutes of International calling that they seem to be giving me.

_______END UPDATE __________

Overall it is a great value and right now although it is not always clear when reading their web site, it seems at least in some places on their web site they claim free number porting.

Also now giving me 60 minutes per month to select international destinations!

Re: My phones down as well

Site is still reachable at the top domain level ie vbuzzer.com They seem to have messed up the DNS entries for the www subdomain.

As for phone service, I also am down. Seems as though my ATA registers successfully the first time after every reboot and I can get one call out after which registration fails and service is down.

Very strange - I have a friend in town also using Vbuzzer and same Internet provider (Teksavvy) and he is having no problems? I tried google DNS and OpenDNS and still nothing - can't even get the soft phone working. NE1 have a clue what is going on?

Ok - I fixed it

Looks like it is DNS issues - I switched from my teksavvy DNS to OpenDNS, rebooted my ATA and all is back. In addition, I can now reach www.vbuzzer.com using the openDNS servers - can't reach it using teksavvy or GoogleDNS servers - get the under construction page - very strange.

Hope this helps

Using the cache check on OpenDNS gives addresses for vbuzzer.com that still give me the under construction page.

In truth, I don't talk much on the phone. If I do, it's usually on my cell phone or through Skype for the long distance connections. Still, I was paying for a landline because I felt strange not having one. That little pleasure, however, cost me $30 a month. Currently, vbuzzer has a promotion, and I got my unlimited DID and unlimited Toronto for $25 a year. Normally, the price would be $50 -- still very reasonable. In the first month of usage, I've noticed no glaring problems. Setup was very simple. I have tested the 416 outbound and inbound. It works fine. I have, however, made a few 519 calls and the quality of those was decidedly mixed; I don't ever actually call the 519 (that's what Skype is for), but if you do, take that as a warning. Still, for the price, vbuzzer cannot be beat.

6/2/10: No real 519 problems to speak of anymore.

I have no contract except for duration of whatever services I choose to order by-the-month or by-the-year.

I have used Vbuzzer.com for multiple years now. I have watched the web site continuously evolve for the better, and the service offerings evolve to meet demand. It has been a ride of constant improvement of the 'background' things while all the time proving that they are one of my most reliable providers and have exceptional quality of call.

Vbuzzer has a very good and easily installed soft-phone application with many enhanced features. Their service also works reliably on all of the ATAs I have tested, as well as being a mainstay in my asterisk systems; for both inbound and outbound traffic.

Tech support is primarily via email. It can be slow [>24 hours] for a response, but I've noticed that any service issue is immediately addressed and then answered time permitting.

BOTTOM LINE. I know that I can use Vbuzzer to have high quality conversations with whomever I call. Inbound works flawlessly. A very stable VoIP company.

20080617 -They are constantly evolving, adding interesting and unique features although often mainly supporting their Canadian local client base. For the rest of us, Vbuzzer's services just keep working as advertised!

20080929 - Definitly my carrier of choice for calls to Shanghai and other points in the PRC and the ROC. The quality matches that of my calls to the US and Canada and the cost is always among the best.

20090109 - Nothing has happened since my last update to change my previous opinion of Vbuzzer. Still problem free and Great service!

20090407 - Still the same problem free, excellent, stable service.

20091101 - No reason to change my previously high opinion of Vbuzzer!

There really isn't anything negative I can say. The tech support is nearly non-existant and the website is pretty sparse and to the point but I would rather really low costs than paying people to answer tech support phones so I wouldn't consider this a negative.

I was really hesitant about dropping my landline for voip as I'd heard it could have poor quality and reliability but I've had vbuzzer for over 6 months now and not had a single outage or dropped call. The people I talk to say they can't tell I'm not using a regular phone.

The price can't be beat either as it's $50/year up front and that includes your incoming and outgoing calls with a regular telephone number so you can use an ATA/reg phone. If you don't want a regular number people can call you at and just use their softphone you can save even more but I haven't tried their softphone so can't comment.

Long distance is included to several areas and other areas are great prices. I call a lot of family all over Canada for 1.5 cents/min. Their prices are in $US though so exchange factors into the price of course.

I would guess it costs about $5/mo after exchange and excluding long distance.

Voicemail is a little unusual and some may like or dislike it. Instead of leaving a message for you to pickup on your phone, you get an email with an attached audio clip to an email address you select with the phone number as the subject.

I like that because if its friends or numbers I don't know, I can safely delete the ones I want without wasting my time listening to a queue of messages but some people may not like this.

Definitly worth checking out. I will never go back to paying $50/mo or more for the priviledge of owning a landline. Sure it's out if the power/internet goes out but until I'm the president of the US or someone really important I think I can risk the brief disconnection.

I've been using Vbuzzer for over a year and I'm very happy with the quality of calls. I use Vbuzzer with a Linksys PAP2-NA analogue telephone adapter (ATA) and I haven't had any major problems. Every once in a while there will be a minor problem, such as voice mail not working or calls going straight to voice mail, but Vbuzzer usually fixes these problems fairly quickly.

Their prices are competitive (1.7 cents/minute to several countries) and their forums are very helpful. They don't offer 911 service so I wouldn't recommend that you switch your landline but if you want a second line this service has been great so far.

Highly recommended.

UPDATE - 05/26/09

The quality of the calls remains very good. I'm paying $25/month for a phone number that comes with free unlimited incoming calls. There have been a few service interruptions and problems in the past year, but nothing major. The only negative comment I will make about Vbuzzer is that recently, they have been deleting certain posts from their forum. They want people to contact them directly when they are experiencing problems instead of posting on the forum. Aside from that, I still highly recommend Vbuzzer.

I had a voip.ms DID and I was very happy with it. I get long incoming calls from my mother quite often and the 1.5 cents/minute was adding up. I was suspicious of vbuzzer as you need to download a silly messenger program in order to create an account, but I heard good things and you can't beat a $25/year DID. So I signed up.

At this price it is the same cost as my voip.ms DID was without the incoming call charges ($2/month plus 1.5cents/minute). So far the quality is great, and they have the key features I want in a DID: failover and voicemail. They also have call hunt and ring groups etc FYI. Bottom line is that you just cannot beat their pricing and they seem to be a stable enough company.

Now...Once I move back to Toronto I may have to get their unlimited outgoing Toronto local calls for $25/year as well. We'll see how much my bills with voip.ms add up to at 1/2cent/minute outgoing to Toronto and compare. Also, calls outside Toronto are not nearly as cheap with vbuzzer as with voip.ms, and it is a little annoying having to switch between providers all the time depending where you call. I'll update as I figure it out. Two thumbs up so far!

I heard about Vbuzzer and thought I would give it a try - I don't know of any other companies offering a 416 number with unlimited local calling for $25/year. They take payments/deposits through Paypal (minimum $30 deposit for this service so there's $5 leftover for long distance calling or you can transfer it to another user). I didn't like the extra $5 deposit so much but their taking Paypal is great. As much as I dislike Paypal, there's no need to worry about an unscrupulous company charging bogus fees. I bought a Linksys PAP2-NA VOIP adapter from eBay for $40 and I was set.

The quality is great, comparable to my Bell home phone service. No problems with direct-dialed long distance calls. Billing is very accurate and detailed. Reliability was solid for the first month, after which there was a period of 3 days where I couldn't connect to VBuzzer's server. Support is only by email or their online form. Replies were spotty, ranging from one reply within several hours, one after two days, and no replies to two emails.

Overall, I'm happy with the service. If you can deal with the less than 100% up-time (combine potential issues on VBuzzer's side with your ISP's up-time issues and you almost certainly would be having problems once in a while), then $25/year is a great deal.
