f9 is still doing it for me, my needs have changed over time. I use my pap2t for outgoing calls from my fax machine and send incoming calls to google voice. This allows me to keep my 'vanity phone number' even though I don't need any phones to be ringing from spammers.

my only complaint at this point is about the "support" aspect: I don't get emails that my balance is low (I do check my spam folder, that is not it...), and support via email is "nobody home". They have no problem accepting my money or performing the service, so a mixed bag.

their web site continues to be one of the slowest sites I encounter on the www.

update dec 8 2022: NOT a satisfactory update (have downgraded the ratings appropriately)-

1) looks like the certificate has exporired on F9 website.

2) Home page shows incorrect balance for my account. Sent a message through 'Contact support' on this issue and NO response back so far. Its almost been more than couple of days now.

update jul 8 2014: no issues/complaints. still going strong with F9. if F9 could provide an address book feature which could be used for incoming CNAM, that would be great.

update Nov 23 2013: no issues/complaints. still going strong with F9. i know the famous 'dont fix if it aint broken' saying, but sprucing up the website a liitle bit would help.

update May 28 2013: no issues/complaints. everything is good so far!

took about 30 days to port my number, but it is not F9's fault as it usually takes that long atleast for my number from my past porting experience. been happy so far (3+ weeks). they support setting the phone number in my account as CID when 911 calls are made (helps with smart911.com).

no complaints so far...

F9 is better than you'd think.

With that ugly messy Freeswitch page (Like CallWithUs) uses... it's easy to overlook F9 as one of those "Guy in a garage" businesses. It's not bad... and they can actually port some numbers that the automated tool doesn't specify can be done.

With a good face lift to the site, I think F9 would be a bigger player.

The only thing I can tell you is that when I ported my number out, they were unaware of it and I had to tell them to take it off of my account but it wouldn't have made any difference, Nitzan was still around though.

I ported to Anveo Direct, I'm sure they just used 0000 as the pin.

I enrolled on June 17, 2020 and requested a Canadian phone number. I was told there is a $5 setup up charge and then a $5/mo after number is provided. I immediately got charged $5.
On July 23, 2020 I got an email that I will be charged $5 per month, I NEVER RECEIVED ANY PHONE NUMBER.
In the last month I sent over 10 messages, through my online account, through their support email, to Nitzan Kon, F9”s CEO.

NEVER RECEIVED ANY REPLY WHATSOEVER as of today, July 28th, 2020.

Since I paid via PayPal, it looks like I am going to lose my $15. This is really bad.

There is no number anywhere. My ex husband is using this service for the last 10 years and he is very happy with it. I enrolled hoping to get a Toronto number based on his recommendation and excellent price (aka as value).
Obviously at the end of this debacle, where I hope that the delays are just because of current pandemic situation, if I don’t get anything for my $15 dollars after 3 months of trying, I will change the rating.
Also, if you want to help is great, thank you, just don’t be vague. My ex is helping me and I think that after 10 years of service setting over 15 VOIP SIP numbers all over the world knows what he is doing when he tells me there is no number provided anywhere on the site (see attached).
I would like the idea he is wrong and there is actually a phone number someplace hidden on admin F9 site.

Another person's earlier reference to scrolling was NOT in relation to finding a support number for F9.

Rather it was a reference to the VoIP Tech Chat forum on DSL Reports---and DSL Reports is THIS website you are on right now---the VoIP Tech Chat forum has NUMEROUS posts relating to problems at F9 dating back years.

The point of scrolling was to find some of the posts.

By the way F9's owner Nitzan previously posted in the Voip Tech Chat forum and often would resolve problems in the forum, but he has not logged in for more than 27 weeks.

But here, I will save you some work, please read these posts:

So, file a dispute with PayPal...don't delay. If F9 fails to comply -- or even reply -- PayPal eventually should refund your payment(s).

I sent F9 a request a week ago via the customer portal to cease billing a DID (phone number) I'd ported away but have received no reply. VoIP continues to function, but clearly, F9 appears to have become a zombie firm.

Nitzan at FutureNine [did] refund $14 out of your $15 balance.

I think that should be mentioned in the review.

Update: 2016 08 12

Still using Future Nine. It'll be 8 years in a few months.

Phone quality is great. No complaints!

Update:2014 01 30

Still using Future Nine. Been using Future Nine since October of 2008.

Update:2011 10 20

I just renewed my Future Nine subscription for my fifth year.

I believe that I haven't had any issues with the system for the past year.

I have a voip.ms account that I rarely use. I notice that with my voip.ms account, there seems to be some voice latency. None that I can detect with Future Nine.

If you're looking for a VOIP service, this is the one!

Update: 2011 10 16

I just renewed by Future Nine subscription for my fourth year. It's hard to believe that I've been using it for 3 years already.

I've had a few issues over the past few years like not being able to call some numbers or callers not being able to call me.

Technical support has been very, very good. They are very responsive when I have issues.

I had to purchase a new PAP2T-NA last month because mine died. I should probably buy a spare at some point.

Cheers.

Update:

I've been using Future Nine for about 1.5 years. The service has been very good. I had a few hiccups about 6 weeks ago but those issues seem to be fixed.

Still a valued customer.

From my initial post:

For years I've been using Comcast's phone service without much issue. I wanted to save money on my phone bill so I ordered a MagicJack. I acquired an old computer from my Brother-in-Law and dedicated it to MagicJack. The call quality was ok. But it didn't work all the time. Worst of all, it didn't have inbound Caller ID with name - a feature that to my wife was a deal killer. So MagicJack goes back.

A few weeks went by and I was at my friends' house and we were discussing technology and he said that he used Vonage and was happy with it and very happy with the price savings. I had tried Vonage in the past and it was ok. I liked Comcast's call quality better so I sent Vonage back as well. I still wanted to save money so I read the reviews of VoIP providers on BBR and Future-Nine had good reviews. I read many of the posts by Future-Nine employees to find out what type of service they provide. I was happy with what I saw so I took the plunge.

On September 22, 2008, I ordered a Linksys PAP2 from Future-Nine's website. On the 26th of September it arrived. I plugged it in and it started working. I made a few outbound calls and the call quality was acceptable. In my opinion it's not as good as Comcast's but acceptable for the amount of money I'll be saving. I wonder if Router and ATA affect call quality. It was as good or better than my friends Vonage phone so I decided to keep it.

I requested my existing Comcast number be ported to Future-Nine on the 27th of September. Future-Nine made the request to them on the same day and new we're waiting for Comcast to release it.

For now, we're only making outbound calls until the port is complete.

My wife is happy with the call quality of outbound calls and I'm very happy with the money I'll be saving. I'll be paying for my next month via a yearly contract which will reduce my monthly amount even more.

The biggest headache has been getting the ATA to function correctly. I've had some delay issues. I've had to reset and play with the settings to get it working in an acceptable manner. See my other posts if you're really interested.

I would have ordered a PAP2T from buy.com. It's the newest version available whereas the one from Future-Nine was the previous version. That's probably the only change I would make. (I like newer versions.) When I replace the PAP2 that I have, I'll probably spend between $100-200 and get a really nice one because I think it will provide me better sound quality - yes, it would be an experiment and it might not make a difference at all.

Today, Future-Nine's website is very generic. The signup process is not automatic (meaning, you can't just select what you want and the system sets everything up) and the purchasing of minutes and the site telling you what plan you are on are not what one would be used to. But, put your money into their system, tell the owner what you want and he'll get it ready and configured the way you want - and in a quick amount of time.

Other users have talked about the scalability issue of the service being so dependent upon manual processing of requests. The owner knows of these concerns and is working to improve the user experience.

If you are a technical person and don't need things tied up with a pretty bow, plow ahead. If you aren't that technical and like to pay for extras like a pretty website you may want to sign up for another provider. But, you'll pay more and at the end of the day, the service will be just as good if not better from Future-Nine. And besides, once you get it up and running, how often are you really going to want to go to their website anyway?

I'm looking forward to e911 availability. I'll post updates as time goes along.

17 October 2008

Porting of my Comcast number to Future-Nine took place on Thursday. The phone was down for about 6 hours during the process.

Interestingly, other Comcast users who dial my phone number actually ring the Comcast line. It looks like Comcast has to tell it's system that my former Comcast number is really a former number.

I'm still amazed at the great customer service that this company offers. They get an A+ in my book.

20160119 - UPDATE - No reason to change any previous comment. Nitzan keeps providing me reliable services for a reasonable price.

20150812 - UPDATE - Nitzan continues to provide _reliable_ DIDs and termination for me through the Future-Nine brand (primarily residential) as well as through the CheapVoipInc brand (for the more serious, experienced user and BYOD/PBX type user.)

20150522 - UPDATE - See below! It all still applies. Please note that they're one of the good-guys that will continue to survive because they offer great service and reliable value. Affiliated CheapVoipInc is also reliable and works well for me to most of the U.S.A., east of the Rockies while providing the additional flexibility of setting my outbound caller info.

20141027 - UPDATE - See below! It all still applies. Please note that they're one of the good-guys that will continue to survive because they offer great service and reliable value.

20140828 - UPDATE - See comments below since they still apply. In fact, I am moving more DIDs to F9. Something that is increasingly very important to me is the ability in my account to easily specify simultaneous destinations and/or a series of destinations in the ring sequence priority I choose. That is a feature not available, or readily avalaible, with many of the other providers monitored here at DSL Reports. It is a _no-extra-charge_ feature included in the Future-Nine scheme of good things. And it works well! I use F9's White or Premium routes to ensure reliable, quality termination. Have I mentioned GREAT VALUE?

20140215 - UPDATE - FutureNine remaines one of my most reliable providers. CheapVoipInc is also reliable and works well for me to most of the U.S.A., east of the Rockies.

20130327 - UPDATE - Future Nine is still providing _reliable_ services at reasonable (great VALUE) prices. And CheapVoipInc is a home-run for those of us that run our own PBX systems.

20121117 UPDATE - A real pleasure to use. And with the new spin-off CheapVoipInc, my above 'Bad' comment doesn't even apply! Wow, what _VALUE_! [And still one of my most _reliable_ VoSPs]

20120522 UPDATE - Nothing new to report except continued reliability for peanuts in cost.

20111209 UPDATE - Multiple accounts just chugging along, daily providing me (and mine) solid service and value.

20110604 - STILL one of my MOST RELIABLE providers of high voice quality service. A great value VoSP!

20110131 - The service, reliability and value is still great! I think one very nice. and important feature, is the ability to set multiple prioritized destinations (SIP and PSTN) for each DID (inbound phone number). It provides a solid fail-over progression no matter what mistakes I make on my systems!

.

20101112 - Multiple accounts working just fine. Still impressing my very persnickety Mother.

20100221 - I believe that Future-Nine is THE best value, full-service, residential VoSP available to the home user today. I caveat that with the dreadful assumption that the user has done proper due diligence, and has basic understanding of what to expect with VoIP services.. I base that opinion on the reliability of the network, and the overall cost structure offered. F9 passes the test with flying colors for my 90 year old Mother who says the call quality is great! And, that is not the case with all of my other providers, so she has a dedicated F9 account now.

20091101 - It is hard to imagine that this 'small' company is actually one of my most reliable VoSPs, but it is! Nitzan Kon continues his methodical build out of his service, carefully implementing well-planned features. Everything seems oriented to enhancing reliability first, while continuing to improve services available. There is absolutely nothing 'cheap' about Future-Nine, but there sure is some of the best value for the money with this company!

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

How do I describe the services I receive from Future-Nine (I'll use F9 for short)? GREAT! I use F9 services a little differently than the way most subscribers do. I am an asterisk user and therefore tend to require somewhat different features from the typical user looking for plug-it-in-and-forget-it residential services. I am also a left-over beta tester, who was impressed with the quality and commitment to service, that I stayed on (perhaps somewhat as a thorn in Nitzan's hide ?!). Their stated intent is to serve the single family, residential market, and their products are tailored to that end.

F9 is also a great source of good quality DIDs for most parts of the country ( I don't have any experience with F9 international numbers). Most U.S.A. DIDs come with at least 3000 inbound minutes included which can make them a bargain for heavier users. In country outbound service at only $.01/minute also makes them a bargain, as long as you do not need to set your own CID by the call. Unfortunately, F9 does not meet _my_ requirements there, so I basically can only use F9 outbound for my own home extensions! For the _vast majority_ of people, this should not be a problem!

I disagree with F9 advertising as being a "Cheap VoIP Provider", although much of that has to do with differing connotations of the word 'cheap' around the world. Nitzan Kon has proven to be anything but cheap in his careful build-out of his system to provide _reliable_, _quality_ services economically! He has carefully built a geographically distributed network of servers to provide both excellent response times as well as redundancy of hardware and isolation from disruption at a single physical location. He continually is developing upgraded features to further enhance the _value_ of his services for his customers.

Re: Passes Mom Test

It is great that she is still as mentally sharp as ever and enjoys remaining in contact with friends and family! F9 call quality and overall system availability/reliability have indeed been better than any of my other recent 'full-service' (stand-alone) residential VoSPs. F9 has proven a better service provider for her, with her ISP and location.

I will admit to having other high quality, high reliability providers, but they are mostly cut and paste/BYOD companies from whom I buy DIDs/inbound and termination services that I use with my asterisk boxes. I also use VOIPo services, but they have actually had more outages and problem routes than I have had with F9 for her.

I got F9's future-5 plan a year ago for a tenant. For 5$/month, this is saving me a bundle. Call quality is always very good. Calls never got dropped. A few calls don't make it through from time to time (congestion?), especially to the 418 area code. It doesn't happens often, and my tenant has access to a back up service plan when this happens. So it's not really an issue. The few times I opened a ticket, their support staff was pretty responsive and quickly fixed the issues.

The service is lacking a few features many other providers have: IVRs, black lists, etc. The limited feature set helps make the web interface clean and simple. Setting up my account was super easy.

**3/5/15**
I've had Future-Nine for 6 years now. I'm in the process for switching to Google Voice for my landline. The main reason is reliability. I experience some sort of outages about once a month. Here are the problems I run into most commonly:
-When someone calls my number, it rings on their side by doesn't on my end
-When I answer a call, the caller can hear me, but I can't hear them.
-Line goes straight to voicemail when they call me
-Missing dial tone when I pick up phone to dial out
-When dialing international cell number, I can hear them fine, but they have trouble hearing me
-Voice is very delayed when doing international cell calls (over 3 second delay)

I would like to note that I have cable internet with excellent service, and using a Linksys PAP2T-NA. Sometimes unplugging my linksys and plugging it back in works, but not always.

Other issues I have ran into is that they are unresponsive in tech support. When there's an outage, and I email them, it takes days to replay. I've been also trying to port my number out for a week now, but they keep denying me and when I contacted them they give no replay.

Lastly, their prices for international calling went up, while the prices for other services, such as Google Voice, went down significantly, to a point now that I will end up spending a lot less money on Google Voice because they don't have a monthly fee.

PS, their website hasn't been updated at all in the past 6 years.

**11/12/09**
I picked future nine because they had the best rates for dialing some specific european country cell phone numbers. They also have very competitive international landlines rates. Lastly they had a very cheap monthly rate.
Ever since I signed up 5 months ago, I've pretty good service and support. My favorite part was that I was able to add a second line for $5/month to my existing plan and share the minutes.

Puzzle.

You said "A+" but your numeric score only averages to 37 out of 100.

That's killing them, and I don't think you intended it.

-----

EDIT: I see now that you removed your "A+" comment.

You said that you are porting to Google Voice, please let us know how GV works out in terms of reliability and so forth.

I do agree that FutureNine needs to comprehensively revamp their website. It probably loses them potential customers.

...

I'm going to assume you've been using the same PAP2T you've had for six years now, correct? all the problems you've been describing could be (and likely are) caused by a malfunctioning adapter. I can't find ANY support requests from you about these issues, by the way.

Now, about your comment that we're rejecting the port and not responding to you:
1. It's not us that are rejecting it - it's the underlying carrier. We'll work with them to get you the right information.
2. YOU CONTACTED US LAST NIGHT. It's a bit misleading to claim that we've been ignoring you when it hasn't even been a day...

Agree with Nitzan on this.

xtwister161, if there are problems with your port it's likely to be on the Google Voice side.

How are you porting to GV anyway---GV only ports in cellphone (mobile) numbers.

And as Nitzan said, some of your problems may possibly be due to having such an old ATA, or could relate to router issues.

My Other Reviews

·Frontier FiberOp..
I came across Future Nine while shopping around for an ITSP and deciding what to do with my Google Voice phone numbers. As you may know, Google posted a blog in 2013 regarding Google Voice that was summarily interpreted as an imminent shutdown of the free phone service as many have used it for some time, including me.

I lurked the forum for a while before deciding to try them out. One forum topic after another one, this company seemed to make customers happy, and for the price and offerings I had to check them out.

My test drive with them so far spans two months, and I am very pleased. Their service works very well with Asterisk, which was necessary for me as my phones run off this PBX.

You may also take into consideration the fact that this company has a subject matter expert in all things VoIP and their service, and this person routinely lurks the VoIP forums right here. This person personally took the time to take me from A to Z and answered all my questions quickly and very friendly. My vote for Future Nine's MVP goes to nitzan. You will find very helpful and honest advice from this individual.

The service costs $5 per month, and I get 2000 incoming and 2000 outgoing minutes. This was advertised as promotional pricing at the time.

Call quality is excellent. You can expect standard features like Caller ID, waiting, etc to work as well.
