Back in the day, I was paying 70$ a month for a copper landline as my parents wanted a backup just in case. We switched to TWC for 10$ a month, much better, but then the promotion ended and we were up to 25$. When I realized we used the line for 16 hours a month, and almost all calls within the US, it made sense to switch to voip.ms. It has E911 support and even works with our security system.

Awesome feature set, totally stable service
Er-r-r-r-r-r-r ... I can't think of any.
Value for money should be rated 150% (15 DIDs incl. 8 with E911)

Value for money:

7/17/16 --- My service continues to be rock solid with a host of DIDs in several accounts ... spread among me, my wife, our three married kids, and our college age grandkids ... for a wide variety of uses in eight geographic locations. I am blown away by the feature set that ... to name a few ... allows selective call handling / forwarding / blocking, SMS, IVR, personalized recordings (which can be assigned specific individual or blocks of incoming CallerIDs).

The total monthly cost for the PAYG DIDs is US$12.75 + US$12.00 (for E911 at each location) ... totaling US$24.75 per month ... plus nine-tenths of a cent per minute (in 6 second increments) for incoming, outgoing and forwarded calls.

If each one of our separate family locations were to have a PSTN accounts ... each account offering only a single DID with no feature set whatsoever (except 911) and tolled local and long-distance charges ... the cost for the Verizon & ATT landlines would be over $250 per month.

-=-=-=-=-=-

3/18/15 --- Freshening my review ... no change in my ratings. I've begun to use more and more of the features within Voip.ms's awesome feature set ... as I continue to explore the world of VoIP. I was pleasantly surprised when the PAYG DIDs went from 99¢ per month to 85¢ and the incoming call rates were reduced from 1¢ per minute to .9¢ (less than a penny) in 6 second increments.

-=-=-=-=-=-

4/12/14 --- We having been using Voip.ms for some time now as the primary household number in our NJ home. There have been no problems whatsoever. The feature set continues to amaze me ... especially selective call blocking, SMS, uploading personalized recordings which can be assigned to answer specific incoming individual or blocks of CallerIDs. And the savings over our long ago Landline with Verizon basic service have proven to be well worth the switch to VoIP in general.

-=-=-=-=-=-

7/9/13 --- UPDATE: I must be lucky. I've had no problems in my server selections ... while the service and feature set continues to be awesome. The recent addition of SMS texting capability is greatly appreciated and works well.

-=-=-=-=-=-

5/25/12 --- UPDATE: Voip.ms continues to supply me with awesome VoIP service, features and support ... not to mention very reasonable PAYG pricing..

-=-=-=-=-=-

11/27/11 --- UPDATE: No changes to add to my previous raving reports for this awesome VoIP offering. Feature-wise, it appears to top the list of all of the VoIP providers we discuss in the BBR Forums ... but only by a tiny fraction over my other favorite ... too small a degree to differentiate in my 100% ratings for both.

-=-=-=-=-=-

04/29/11 --- Update: Voip.ms continues to be one of my favorite and steadfast providers in all aspects ... but most awesome is their Feature Set. Two examples:

(1) adding PhoneBook entries is pure simplicity;

(2) adding to the BlackList (otherwise known as CallerID Filtering or Call Blocking) ... using wild cards if necessary ... is also an easy task.

The website aIlows customers to post suggestions for improving features and functionality ... and Voip.ms listens!

-=-=-=-=-=-

12/15/10 --- Value for money continues to be incredible with my PAYG accounts. Quality, Reliability and Support are top notch as well. Web portal changes within the past year have greatly improved navigation among the various settings and options, especially once one gains some familiarity through experimentation. The Feature Set offerings, in my opinion, are not exceeded by any other competitor in the VoIP field ... and these features are what should make "Value for money" a 150% rating.

-=-=-=-=-=-

5/7/10 --- With the recent changes (all for the better) in the web portal, I've got to boost my web-site rating.

-=-=-=-=-=-

3/28/10 --- For a relative newcomer (them not me), Voip.ms has raced to the top in service, reliability, features ... and amazing value. Their PAYG plan is very, very reasonable (cheap!) They don't surprise you with add-on charges, fees, taxes. They have an awesome selection of "pick your own" phone numbers in an easy to search format.

I definitely agree with your value for money statement. By programming extensions, URIs, call treatments etc I am saving more on phone, LD and cell than I used to pay for my voip. 150% is not an exaggeration at all.

Ported in and VoIP.ms number costs identical

I'd like to add that ported in numbers are not necessarily more expensive in terms of monthly fee and per minute rates than VoIP.ms-sourced numbers. I have one of each and pay the same for both ($0.99 per month and $0.01 per minute for incoming).

Re: Ported in and VoIP.ms number costs identical

Past postings by US customers seems to suggest that our monthly & per minute charges for in-ported DIDs is the higher value. Either the situation is different for our Candian colleagues or Voip.ms has changed its policy.

The reason given in the past for the higher charges was that porting in numbers involved moving a DID from a PSTN or Cellular or CLEC ... not a VoIP provider ... to one of Voip.ms's higher priced CLECs.

Perhaps MartinM or another poster can clarify this point.

Re: Ported in and VoIP.ms number costs identical

It used to be that for certain Rate Centers in the States, we were not able to port those numbers to our PRI's, instead we had to use the per-minute charge of a third party provider.

We're now able to configure a lot of those numbers on our PRI's, therefore able to charge those numbers at the lower price point (1.49 vs 0.99).

We do our best to adjust these numbers to the new rate. If you have ported an American number in the past, I can personally verify for you if we're able to set the lower rate for your number. Just PM me your DID.

I have removed a detailed description of my initial issues because they no longer reflect the experience I have with voip.ms, who has now become my primary phone service provider. All of my key DIDs are hosted by voip.ms and I use them extensively at home and for my home office. So some of the comments below reflect that early experience, rather than anything recent.

I began using voip.ms in 2010.

Update: June 2011:

After the initial growing pains, VOIP.MS has turned into a reliable, trusted partner. Can't convince the wife to give up the landline, so I've stuck with the paygo model and use it primarily for family and home office calls. I've been very satisfied since the early issues have been resolved and have increased the scores based on my experiences.

Update: March 2013
Still use VOIP.MS for my home office line, it's been pretty solid. Recently went with VOIPO for our home line (all you can eat for 7 bucks a month). Due to a recent relocation, the wife is on the phone for an hour or two a day with the folks back in the old area, so the appeal of unlimited (within reason) at a fixed cost was attractive. Wish VOIP.MS offered the same for residential use.

Update: August 2015
After some months of trying to sort out a number of issues with VOIPO, I threw in the towel and ported my primary 617 number to voip.ms on the per-minute plan.

I've had very good service over the past 1.5 years, and now have 3 lines with them, one being my old cell phone number which I call-forward.

Update: March 2016
After moving (again), I ported another line into voip.ms from google voice; GV worked fine, but I wanted the option of LIDB for when we were calling from our new home. Use a combination of voip.ms, localphone and circlenet for outgoing calls. Cost for home line with usage and e911 is less then $6/mo (who needs a flat rate at that price?). Very consistent service, very pleased with voip.ms.

Update: June 2016
Cleaned up some of the detail of my very early experience, and find that voip.ms continues to be a trusted communication partner. The only issue I find is that sometimes the CNAM dip accuracy is a little lower than I expect; for example a landline calling from voip.ms might have the city name, with callcentric it has the correct owner name. Minor issue.

Update after resolution

For the sake of clarity we would like to clear up this case, even though it is now solved:

The customer entered a port request for his number to our network. The number did port correctly and worked fine.

Customer then approached us asking to do the CNAM update. The customer was on the firm idea that there is NO US-based telephone number that cannot have the CNAM updated. Please note that CNAM can not be updated for ALL USA ratecenters, so I mentioned on a ticket that it is not the case. We can gladly find out if any DID in our stock is editable, and in this case it was not.

Since the customer was so upset, we decided to do an internal port to another provider, and we paid for the internal porting fee as a courtesy. In cases when we need to do an internal port And then request the update, there may be some delays. The customer was advised on january 25th that this could take up to 25 business days, which were up on the date today march 1st (the review here was updated before the timeframe we gave to the customer was up).

Please be aware also that CNAM updates are not something automatic. It can take usually up to 15 business days (without taking in consideration the time of an internal port) and since there are several cnam-query providers used by companies in USA, it may be possible that for some specific provider they could be still fetching unrefreshed records. That is beyond our control since each provider may refresh their CNAM database as they please, however as mentioned on the ticket we verified the national database and this CNAM IS returning properly now.

The issue when vitelity was showing up as CID name was just transitory, as this was ported internally and then the CNAM update was applied.

Thank you for your understanding

Re: Update after resolution

Peter has been good about staying involved in this issue. As I observed above, I was told one thing at the time of the port (regarding CNAM/LiDB) and something else after the port completed, and VOIP.MS did the right thing to solve that issue.

However, w/r/t the recent CNAM/LiDB issue, as other reviewers have noted, and I observed as well, having tech support state that "we're working on it", with no detail, is quite frustrating and does nothing to allay concerns of customers. Had customer service been more forthright (e.g., the Vitality name thing is only a day or two until your LiDB is fixed, as Peter now states above), there would have been less consternation and heartache. Rather, I was told it would be 2 more weeks before it was fixed. CS needs a bit of training me thinks.

I do want to confirm that this seems largely resolved, if that wasn't clear above, and I plan to keep VOIP.MS as a provider.

Ordering and porting my number was easy and fairly cheap. Set-up was a bit of the learning curve for me, although wiki guide for my VOIP adapter was available and easy to follow. Voice quality is great, never any problem.

I think the home phone will be eliminated as soon as kids will get there cellphones, but at the time being home line for 4.6 dollars average per month is definitely great solution for me.

I'm paying about $5/month. Here's the breakdown:
$1.49/month for a phone number (DID) and around $3.20 - $3.60/month for local and long distance calls. No 911 service.

When I signed up I paid with Paypal and I was able to setup my account instantly. There were a few snags setting it up with my Linksys PAP2-NA but I was able to get through to their online tech support pretty quickly and they helped me configure a few settings and everything has worked fine since then.

The service has been reliable. I haven't noticed any downtime and the quality of the calls is great. They provide two types of routing for outgoing calls: premium and value. The rates for premium routing are a bit expensive when compared to other VOIP providers but their value rates are good.

If you don't plan on using many minutes then I highly recommend VOIP.ms. However, if you anticipate that you will use the line regularly then this might not be the service for you. Heavy users would probably go for the $4.95/month option that includes unlimited incoming calls. Outgoing local calls are are not included.

VOIP.MS also offers many great features such as Direct Inward System Access (DISA), which allows you to configure your account in a way that will let you (or anyone else you give access to) call your number, enter a pin # and gain access to your account. You are then able to place calls from your VOIP.ms account from wherever you are. You can also setup sub accounts, an IVR and there are many other features as well.

In conclusion, unless you're a heavy user I highly recommend checking out this company.

Update: 09/24/11

My rating remains unchanged. There have been a few problems with server I primarily use but I haven't noticed much downtime. It's been a solid service from the start. Highly recommended.

Update: 11/08/12

My rating is the same. VOIP.ms continues to be a solid and reliable service that offers great features.

Update: 02/02/14

My rating is still unchanged. Aside from a couple of minor problems, VOIP.ms continues to provide a great VoIP service.

Update: 01/07/16

I'm now giving voip.ms 5/5 when it comes to value for money. My rating was previously 4/5. As voip.ms grows, they are able to provide customers with better deals. Martin stated that this was their intention on the voip forum on dslreports and he has followed through. They continue to provide a great voip service.

I've used voip.ms for about 4 months now. I had used Callcentric previously (and still use them today), and have had excellent luck with them. I'll try and highlight some of the differences between these services in this review.

Rates are cheaper with voip.ms, and voip.ms has several features that Callcentric doesn't have that I've found useful:

1) IVR (voice prompts)
2) Ability to create subaccounts for extensions
3) More routing options than Callcentric's "call treatments"
4) Choice of geographically dispersed servers
5) Better outgoing caller ID support

Calling toll-free numbers is also free with voip.ms (if you wish - Premium routing is available).

With respect to device support, I've had difficulties with my Nokia devices staying registered with voip.ms. I've tried almost all configuration options on both sides, but I can't get them to stay registered. They work with no issues on my Callcentric account. I've not opened any tickets with voip.ms for this, as my primary phone (Cisco) works perfectly with their service.

Codec support is good, I stick with g729a. I can't speak to tech support, as I haven't opened any tickets yet.

voip.ms is an excellent BYOD service, and I'd even recommend them as a backup to other services.

Update (17 Nov 2010): I'm still having excellent service with voip.ms. I recently ported in a 212 DID, and there were no issues. Highly recommended!

Update (17 May 2016): Still happy with voip.ms. Support is always prompt and helpful with tickets.

I actually signed up for Voip.MS as a backup phone line, I am using it for my primary home telephone as my AT&T Landline has been down for a week.
The rates are very good, especially for someone like me who may not use any minutes for a month or so seeing as it's a backup line. Only monthly charge is for E911 which is $1.50 to cover the mandatory costs like cells and traditional phone. E911 is optional but is highly recommended for North American users.
I also am happy I was able to acquire a Toll-Free Number for my family to call from across the country at no charge. I also setup an IVR to weed out Robo calls as well and telemarketers.

Call quality is highly dependent on your ISP, they have many many different server locations and redundant servers so I personally have selected a server about 150 miles from me. Latency is about 30ms for me roundtrip so it's very comparable to my landline and less than cell phones.

Here is my ping results from my UVERSE 75Meg connection

--- atlanta.voip.ms ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 30.250/30.484/30.905 ms

Clarifications...

I'm pretty sure you are paying fixed monthly fees for e911 service and phone number(s)/DID(s).

And there is no real programming required to use VoIP.ms, just configuration of the service and your VoIP device which can require some computing savvy (as is true for any BYOD VoIP service provider).

Re: Clarifications...

To clarify and I'll update the review to word it better, there are no traditional monthly charges like other VoIP services such as $30 for unlimited. It's more of a buy what you need service, you technically don't even have to enable e911.

As far as the programming, there are a lot of people out there who basic stuff like that would be overwhelming.
Especially the elderly, a lot of people just want to plug it up and go.
