I have about 2 months of experience with Voip.ms.
Promise of cheaper service and small monthly charge was a good recommendation for it. Voip.ms allows you to see the full 10 digit number rather than NPA/NPX before you buy the DID.
Voice quality is ok.
CNAM -(incoming)- is charged for each call - though you can disable it Outgoing CNAM -- to fix it you have pay $10 per (not mentioned with DID purchase) Otherwise your calls will show up with strange CNAME though you are paying for that Number
Not having a CNAM is ok -- but think what would happen when you call into a conf. call with and porn-star's name pop's up with your # ! --- and you don't even know what it's going on.
This not very nice -- but probably is same with all cheap VOIP providers.
Customer service is subpar -- but functional

I wanted to try voip again using my fios connection, so I researched who the best voip provider would be for me.
I had previously used Speakeasy voip, but you need to have at least Speakeasy DSL to use their voip service.
I tried CallCentric, while their support was awesome, I was having weird call quality issues, so I decided to try another provider.
I had setup Teliax at my mother's house, they were rock solid, tech support was good.
After reading other reviews and posts in the voip forum, I decided to try voip.ms.
I've been using them for a few months now without any annoying call quality issues as I had with Call Centric. Their service has been rock solid for me.
I have 2 local dids with them, one for my Trixbox, and the other for my pap2 attached to my fax machine. I don't know if it is the fios or not, but my fax reliability has been superb. I can fire off a 10 page G3 fax without failure.
I also have 2 toll free #s, one is assigned to the pbx, and the other routes to the pap2.
One of the requirements of a voip provider was that they provide the ability to support outgoing cnam, whether for free, or for a fee.
Their one-time fee for US DIDs is $10
Voip.ms supports outgoing cnam on 99.5% of Canadian DIDs, and many US ratecenters.
The reason I gave voip.ms a lower support rating is that I was promised on numerous occasions that I would receive an answer via email by the end of the day about whether or not outgoing cnam was supported on the ratecenter that I am using.
I don't know if their support is horrible, or they were awaiting a response from their vendor. Either way, it is NEVER a good idea to over promise and under deliver. I always under promise and over deliver. Good customer service is about properly managing the customer's expectations.

Approximately 2.5 years ago, we decided to pull the plug on ATT for our 3 home / small business POTs lines, moved to naked DSL and ported all 3 numbers to CallVantage. We were very pleased with the quality, support and features (have yet to find an equivalent replacement), and disappointed when ATT decided to discontinue service.
After some extensive research, we ported the primary personal number to PhonePower, signed up for 2 years with the free ATA and second cloned line. This allowed us to drop one of the paid lines. This has gone extremely well, and we intent to continue this service with PP.
Requiring a more feature rich option for the primary incoming business line, we immediately ported the number to Future 9. While the start-up was very smooth, and initial quality, service was excellent, we soon found that several of the desired features are not available, and began to experience a degredation in call quality.
Unable to resolve the issues to our satisfaction, I continued my search, and decided to add voip.ms as a second line to the ATA purchased from F9.
Stephen did a reasonable job explaining the service and features in my pre-purchase inquiries (online chat - email was never answered), and based on the reviews here, decided to give it a try.
While the website and features are very detailed, they are somewhat confusing for a relative novice such as myself, and the instructions are insufficient. My original post-sale trouble ticket was not answered after 24 hours, but online chat Stephen was there, and helped resolve most of my system configuration issues. Contrary to what he told me in our pre-sale chat, the group ring capability is not yet available, but we were able to make it work using IVR.
The Linksys PAP2 ATA configuration information is seriously lacking, and I spent the better part of a day trying options suggested in the VoIP forum (thanks, all!).
As I paid for a full year of unlimited domestic calls with F9, and still have a few dollars worth of international calls in my account, I held off porting my number to voip.ms, are forwarding all incoming calls to the voip.ms DID IVR, using F9 as the primary outgoing line.
While only up for just over one day, we are pleased with the features and call quality, but will carefully monitor the service for a few months before porting the number.

I decided to try this service for 30 days before migrating my home phone number. During my trial I used my SPA-3102 to route my all outgoing calls to voip.ms while still accepting incoming calls on my PSTN line. I was up in running in this mode in about 15 minutes. I failed to notice Toronto on the list, so I used NY as the termination point for my calls.
During the trial all my calls were crystal clear, and I ran into no issue. So finally I decided to migrate my home phone number. The porting took about 7 days. On the 7th day, received calls early morning normally. About 11:30 AM I received a call from the vet on my cell, and they mentioned my home phone answered with a message about it not being assigned yet. I checked my e-mail and found a message at 11:30 AM saying my DID had been added to my account so I could configure it, but the port was not yet complete. I then spent the next two hours trying to configure my SPA-2100 to accept incoming calls. (I switched to the SPA-2100 because I could have my acanac business line on the same device.) I finally figured out whenever I called from my Acanac number (line 2) to my voip.ms number (line 1) the call was not correctly routed. However, when I called from my cell phone or such the phone rang correctly. I assume the problem must relate to both lines being on the same ATA device and decided to ignore the problem.
After the DID port, both my step-mother and my brother-inlaw reported that calls to my home sounded tinny, and were hard to hear. However, when I configured the DID, I also switched my termination to Toronto. I notice that when I do broadband tests my connections from Hamilton, Ontario to Buffalo, New York are better than my connections to Toronto, Ontario. I also noticed I could not call Union Gas's toll free number. So I switched my termination back to New York. I hoping that has resolved the quality issue. To avoid problems with unreachable toll free numbers I added the following to my dial plan:
1800[2-9]xxxxxxS0|1866[2-9]xxxxxxS0|1877[2-9]xxxxxxS0|1888[2-9]xxxxxxS0
This seems to work with Union Gas and the other toll free numbers I tested.
I estimated my monthly cost based on the DID+E911 plus 500 minutes per month. It is worth noting that if you pay voip.ms with paypal no taxes are added to the order. If you paying with credit card they charge GST. I question the legality of this. If they Voip.ms is a Canadian company, they must always pay GST on sales to Canadian customers. If they are not a Canadian company, they should NEVER charge GST to Canadian customers.

Latest edit: I haven't had to talk to technical support in weeks. I hesitate to say this for fear of jinxing things, but VoIP.ms could very possibly be the very first VoIP provider I've ever used that "just works".
Okay, back to the original review: Last month I spent $5.25 for my telephone service. In case you didn't get that, let me say it again: Last month I spent $5.25 for my telephone service. If you're after a breakdown of the costs, it went like this: I spent $1.99 on my telephone number (DID) and $3.26 for nearly five hours of calling all around North America. (Edit: I have updated the monthly cost above because I have ordered more DIDs and e911 since I originally wrote this review.)
Setup time was fast. And by "fast" I mean I had my IP phone online and making calls within literally a minute of my PayPal payment. They had to set up my DID manually but did it in less than an hour even though the site said it would take four.
VoIP.ms is a geek's dream. There are a seemingly endless array of configuration options that I can play with to my heart's content. It's all very well explained (easier to learn than Asterisk!) so that non-geeks should enjoy it too. There is no rating for features on this review, but if there were, I would rate TEN stars - I am not aware of any VoIP provider with features like Calling Queues and IVRs other than expensive hosted PBX providers. Some notable features are:
- CallerID Filtering - a very powerful feature that for some reason is not common amongst telephone providers. Now I can route those pesky telemarketers to »www.toao.net/pub/MangosTelemarke···pper.wav - Recordings - you can upload a WAV file and route calls to it. - Sub accounts - you may set up SIP credentials for multiple devices. - Voicemail boxes - you may set up multiple voicemail boxes, with their own SIP addresses if you like. Good for setting up overlines/multi-line hunting. - Ring groups - perfect for my dad who has an apartment overseas. He can set up his IP Phones to all use the same telephone number and same voicemail, in spite of the fact that the phones are thousands of miles away from each other. - DIDs - you may order a theoretically unlimited number of DIDs from around the world, and also toll free. While the ability to order DIDs not in your local calling area is a feature of other VoIP providers, what stands out here is that I can route the DID to any sub account, voicemail box, or ring group that I want, with no interaction from tech support. - Diagnostics - you can tell whether or not your extensions are registered, what IP they come from, and when the next registration is expected. My last two providers didn't have anything close to that. If you had a problem, you just had to guess at it.
The next thing that wowed me, after all the features, is that VoIP.ms has SEVEN severs around the United States, Canada, and even the UK - enough for a different server every day of the week if you like. I pinged all of the servers and picked the one with the lowest latency. Another reason that this is a bonus is that you can occasionally see packet loss to a specific server due to a routing issue. It's not your fault, it's not the VoIP provider's fault, and neither of you has the ability to fix it. But with VoIP.ms, you can simply switch to another server, using a simple process that should take the average user 30 seconds or less.
If that weren't enough, there's another advantage to having multiple servers. The American servers use American carriers and the Canadian servers use Canadian carriers. Often, Canadian toll-free numbers will only work in Canada and American toll-free numbers will only work in the USA. My calls are by default routed through US3. However, adding the following sequence to my dial plan allows me to route toll-free calls through CA1 if I dial 1-800, or US3 if I omit the 1. 18[6780][6780][2-9]xxxxxx<:@sip.ca1.voip.ms>S0 (This plan will also match some non-TF area codes such as 867, but that's fine.)
Some other nice things: I discovered is that there is no noticeable echo when using VoIP.ms. With my previous provider, I had to tweak the volume of my phone at every call to eliminate it. With VoIP.ms, I don't need to think about it at all. VoIP.ms also handles NAT very well. I do not know exactly how they accomplish this, however much to my delight I no longer need to open ports in my router as I did with previous providers.
Because VoIP.ms is a Pay-As-You-Go service, outgoing and incoming calls are charged separately. You can use only termination, or only origination, or both, and you only pay for what you use. This may be hard to get used to for those who are used to flat rate plans, however this is actually a good thing for the customer because the provider does not have to charge more based on what the customer *might* use. Unlike regional telephone companies where one does not have to pay for local calls because local calls are often other customers of the same telephone company, VoIP providers have to pay per minute for every call they make. So, Pay-As-You-Go is the best way for the provider to make sure that their income is directly proportionate to their expenses, and it allows them to lower their prices. Unless one makes more than 4000-5000 minutes of local calls per month, PAYG VoIP is often a very cost effective choice.
There are three routing options for termination (outgoing calls): - Special Routing, about $0.0045/minute to Canada. I found the call quality here too poor to be of use. - Value Routing, $0.0049 to $0.0114/minute to Canada; $0.0105/minute to the US. Call quality was not as good as Premium Rates, but very usable. (And yes - that's less than half a cent per minute!) I had to set DTMF mode to Info for DTMF (buttons on a touch-tone phone) to work here. - Premium Routing, $.0125/minute to Canada and the US. Call quality with these rates was excellent, and this is what I decided to use. The other advantage to Premium Routing is that Outbound Caller ID Name works properly to Canadian destinations.
DID origination (incoming calls) has the option to be billed per minute with a small monthly fee or, for residential users, a slightly larger flat-rate.
As far as I am concerned, there are only a couple of missing features: - Ability to set separate failover destinations for busy, no answer, and device unreachable. - Outbound CallerID Blocking. - The ability to set an IVR or recording as a failover destination - Calling Card-style access. It would be great if VoIP.ms had a toll-free number that one could call from anywhere in North America, enter their account number and a PIN, and be presented with a dial tone. Even if we had to pay the toll-free fees on top of origination and termination, this would still be cheaper than Telus' $1 for card calls. - Speed dial/customized Caller ID Name. I actually don't foresee myself using this but it's been mentioned many times on the forums.
The good news is that VoIP.ms lists all their upcoming features on their website and says they are working on all of these. I have never dealt with any company so eager to implement customer suggestions. So if you have a feature request, let them know. They have implemented several of mine.
VoIP.ms is my only phone provider at home and I have no hesitation in recommending them. In my opinion, they are the top VoIP provider in Canada and arguably North America.

| Voip.ms needs Contact Lists In addition to CNAM, a crucial feature that adds to the Caller ID expericne are Contact Lists. I believe that Voip.ms should add Contact Lists because CNAM doesn't work in some regards, esp when cell phone calls come in, one only sees the name- "New York" or "Cellphone" and not the callers' name. With Contact lists, one can custom name ALL contacts and how they would appear in your caller id. In my opinion, Voip.ms needs Contact Lists more than any other missing feature. | |

| Just signed up for voip.ms I just bought a Linksys SPA3102, went to VOIP.ms, created an account, added $25 to my account with a credit card, plugged in and configured the ATA, and was making calls within a few minutes. I have not yet purchased a DID, since I'm just playing around right now.But for $0.99 per month for a DID and about $0.01 per minute incoming and outgoing, it's cheap to try out. I will be replacing my Verizon POTS line early next year and will have plenty of time to tweak the voip.ms service to my liking. So far, I'm impressed with the ease of setup, and the price. I too would like to see the ability to create a custom contact list for incoming Caller ID. After I've used the service for a few months I will write a proper review. | |

| voip.ms and wireless broadband Well, I have the PAP2T-NA. I have been trying to get this thing to work for incoming calls only with voip.ms. I have done resets. I have entered parameters as per instructions. I do have a DID number. I do not have a sub account. I can get dial tone. I can call the phone, and phone rings. BUT I cannot receive a call and the caller on the other end keeps ringing till busy signal which is the 60 second timeout. I have broadband wireless. I may be behind a proxy due to this internet access situation. Any suggestions to get this to work. Have tried another service with no luck at all. Any help would be greatly be appreciated. | |

I have an Asterisk 1.6 PBX running at my home. I had been using a Vonage soft-phone account for over three years, but wanted to switch to a provider that supports BYOD on my primary number.
I tried these four providers: AxVoice, CallCentric, Future-Nine, and Voip.ms.
I thought that all four had similar call quality.
The VoIP.ms website is laid out well and it is very easy to use. When ordering a DID number, I was able to see a list of actual numbers to choose from before placing the order. When you log on to the website, the first screen is a list of news items and an issue tracker. I think it would be better if information about my account or recent calls were on the first screen. CallCentric has a fantastic dashboard that provides a lot of useful information.
A phone number in my city was in stock, so it only took a few minutes between when I signed up and when my number was active.
VoIP.ms does support E911 in my area. They also provide an 811 number to test the 911 configuration. They support CNAM inbound and outbound. I can set the outbound CNAM from my Asterisk system. VoIP.ms was the only provider that I tested that provides this feature.
DID numbers are billed in advance on the anniversary of when the number was established, instead of on the first of the month.
At the end of my evaluation, I was deciding between CallCentric and VoIP.ms. CallCentric has a better website and fax support, but requires Asterisk settings that I didnt like. VoIP.ms supports outbound CNAM. I decided to choose VoIP.ms primarily because I wanted outbound CNAM support.
Update: I ported two numbers from Vonage to VoIP.ms. The website says it should take between 2 and 4 weeks. The first port took 15 days and the second took 22 days. Not bad!

Update - 02/09/2009 Figured I'd add this into my review. Lately I've been experiencing some abnormalities with my service. For example I've had an echo on the other end of my phone calls a couple times last week. Not a big problem but still noteworthy to me. My second thing is when someone phones long distance to me the call sometimes gets rejected on their end before even ringing. This here has happened twice in the last week.
Still they're not huge problems and I've yet to contact support about them. Simply because I don't want to waste their time in case this is just a one off thing. Now if any of this happens again I'll certainly be giving them a call. None of this changes my rating of voip.ms, I just figured I'd make note of this in my review for future reflection.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ Update - 22/08/2009 Yesterday my phone # was officially ported 5 days after I placed the request. Absolutely no problems so far. Phone calls are clear, no echo, no static or weird noises when calling people.
Cancelling the DID I had used to test the service was easy and quick. No hassle involved there.
I have only one gripe. Even after a month of tinkering I find their customer portal to still be rather daunting. There's a lot of undocumented features in there. I know the service is targeted towards people who know this stuff but a little documentation couldn't hurt.
Overall the service is good and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good voip provider.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- So I've only had service from voip.ms for a couple of days now. It's been great so far. The pay as you go method they use is perfect for me since I only use my phone for a few hours a month at most.
Setup was a breeze. No problems. I had all my computers hooked up and receiving incoming calls in no time. Gotta love ring groups and sub accounts for this. I don't currently use an ATA though it's on my list of things to buy when money allows.
I'll fill everyone in on my monthly cost once my first 30 days are past. Cheers.

Ever since Voicepulse raised their rates, we use Voip.ms for our outbond calling. We use the pay as you go service and we often make as many as 8 outgoing calls at once and have very little voice quality problems. We use the value rates so every now and then some area codes have poor quality. they allow you to set your own outbound caller id so we did not even buy a DID from them, just pay for usage. Overall, we are very pleased

I have tried the majority of the BYOD/PAYG providers that are discussed on BBR. VoIP.ms is the one that has the best combination of features, price, call quality and reliability, for my needs.
They have the major features I look for ..... BYOD, PAYG, Sub-Accounts, Ring Groups, Failover, CNAM (optional), E911 (optional), Configurable outgoing CID number, Music-On-Hold server, powerful CallerID Filtering. You can specify value or premium routes.
I have been using them since July '08 for termination and have been very happy. The calls are always high quality ( I use premium routes). I have never noticed an outage.
After Vonage raised their rates on the 500 minute plan, it was time to port my number over to VoIP.ms. The porting process took 3 weeks. I was advised of the status along the way. CNAM seems to be functioning perfectly.
I also have a toll free DID and another DID for fax. The DID for my fax was a special order and took a week. They generally have a good selection available for instant activation.
I have contacted their support via email and have received prompt replies that accurately addressed the issue.
When looking for a provider, you owe it to yourself to take a look at VoIP.ms!
---------------
Update 2/23/2009: I now have 4 DID's with voip.ms. Registered devices are Polycom 550 IP Phone, Linksys SPA-942 IP Phone and a SPA-9000 IP PBX. The Ring Group and Time Conditions features perform perfectly.
Based on Internet hops and latency, the NY server is closest to me. But, whenever I use it, the voice quality is slightly impaired. If I use Dallas, everything is perfect ..... so, I'm sticking with Dallas.
I made an inquiry to support a couple of days ago and I received a response within an hour. The ticket system issues they had in Jan/Feb appear to have been resolved.
I continue to recommend voip.ms as a primary provider.
--------------
Update 4/29/2009: They have now added the most powerful CallerID Filtering feature I've seen from any provider. That along with free IVR and Queues propels VoIP.ms past any of the numerous providers I have used.
I did contact support about a CallerID Filtering issue and received a response in under 6 hours. The response was appropriate and addressed the question.
If you want a provider that does little more than provide dial tone, take your pick. If you want somebody that provides service and features behind that dial tone, take look at VoIP.ms.
---------------
Update 6/25/2009: I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in VoIP.ms and a price increase for outgoing calls to TOLL FREE numbers.
I've been using them for almost a year now and have always had Premium routes selected. Calls to TOLL FREE numbers have always been $0.0025 per minute. I understand a small charge to discourage call dumping. The end of last month the rate increased to $0.0106 per minute ... for calls to TOLL FREE numbers! Support says it's because I have Premium routes selected, Value is still $0.0025.
Again, even with Premium for the last year it has been $0.0025, until the end of last month.
There is a lot to like about VoIP.ms, but this isn't one of them. Guess it's time to start sending outbound over another provider.
-----------------------
Update 8/19/2009: Voip.ms made a nice enhancement where you can have regular calls on the premium route and toll free on value (free). In the post below, Martin explains the sudden change in the toll free rate I experienced.
I've now been a customer for over a year and couldn't be happier. Voip.ms continues to expand the feature set and provide excellent service.

| toll-free VoIP.ms did not increase the premium toll-free termination. There was a glitch that made some account being charged the value rate even when the account was set to premium. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The good news is that you can now select your Toll-Free route via account settings, and toll-free calls to the value route is now free. I recommend you try it. | |
