I have seen precious little in the way of reviews for Yak High Speed in Canada (or anywhere for that matter). The only review here I've found is one where someone was dissatisfied with their customer support. Well, I am here to deliver a real review of Yak High Speed Internet and Home Phone Service for my fellow Canadians.
I am thrilled to be away from Bell - they have been a pain in my side for years, the tech support from India, having to call every month to fix billing errors or other ridiculous mistakes (I kid you not - the last straw was that I moved last fall - had to get a new B1v.... number and was told I had to get a new email address - I couldn't keep the one I have had for TEN YEARS because I moved. After I refused and kept looking for someone higher up to deal with, they arbitrarily changed my email address by changing the spelling of my name!) I'm happy to be (mostly) rid of them.
Yak's service is this - Home Phone/ High Speed Internet and 500 Cdn long distance for 69.95/month. It's not VOIP. Changing over was simple but they have a process if you're on Bell or Rogers, you must change your home phone first, then the DSL connection second - they take care of the switch over and I gave Bell 30 days notice (on the DSL change) so I wouldn't get ridiculous disconnection charges. Home phone switch over was seamless, never had to change or set anything up, and didn't notice - I assume they just lease the lines from Bell and took over the account. Hey, for half what Bell is charging, I can't complain.
Switch over to DSL was a little more involved - got the modem in the mail - on the switch over date, I called tech support, got a real person without having to talk to Emily or key in tons of info. The friendly guy told me the settings I needed to use in the modem so I could use my existing high speed router. It was quick and painless and I was up and running in under ten minutes. My wife never noticed (I changed the wireless password info on her computer while she was in the tub)
Now, I know Bell is still, at some point, owning and managing the lines, but the speed is great, haven't had any dropped connection (well, my netgear wgt624 modem seems to need to be restarted periodically - going to replace that stupid thing.) and got my first bill and it is exactly what they said it would be. With Bell I was paying almost $135/month, and this is 70 plus tax. No brainer.
So, switching over, relatively painless. Speed, comparable, no complaints. Customer service, painless (ironically Yak also spelled my name wrong, but a two minute call to tech support fixed it on BOTH my email address AND the rest of my account - try that with Bell!)
If you're not a fan of Bell or Rogers, I would recommend it. I thought of Teksavvy too, but for convenience and home phone service, I have no reason to not choose Yak. Now if they only get going on their cellphone service...
