My Other Reviews

·T-Mobile US
Ordered 30/5 wideband internet. They gave me a ubee modem/router combo. Constantly resets, horrible compared to my motorola. I will get rid of this thing once i buy a router.

The cable box they gave me (They had to, i was forced to by the sales guy in order to get the promo. grrrr) ultra crappy compared to my tivo. Stuck with this thing until they come back next week for the tivo install. (I have 2 tivo's and they "forgot" the tuning adapter for one of them.)

Cheaper than my previous comcast service, good speeds, HORRIBLE POS cisco box, but its better than at&t's capped internet.

Ultra crappy ubee ...

The Motorola SBG6580 TWC provided me is no better. I'm shocked at how bad this thing is, especially given the amount of time it's been out on the market. There's been plenty of time for firmware refinement, yet it's still junk.

Trying to use its routing features, it progressively gets slower, to the point where you can't pull more than 30mbps after just two days (I have 50mbps service). I had to bridge it to stop that nonsense. Some people have to run QoS in their personal routers just to keep it from freezing while uploading files (even bridged). I haven't run into that, but I haven't stressed the upstream yet.

Do modem manufacturers just not care about quality anymore?

I've had wideband since January 2010 and everything was working fine minus a few times where my signal levels would fall out of range and thus so would my speed levels. TWC issued a goodwill adjustment to remedy the issue. However in October 2010, my download speeds dipped from 50Mbps to an average of 25Mbps. My upload went down to 1-2Mbps from the advertised 5Mbps, ping as high as 10,000ms and up to 40% packet loss. TWC sent mutliple techs out to no avail and none could find the problem, citing "perfect" signal levels. After I called several times, they decided to rule everything out and rewired my home. No results, so they created a brand new point of entry from the TAP. Also no results, so they replaced the tap in Feb 2011. That improved signal levels but nothing really changed. Then level 3 discovered a node issue in my area and added me to the existing service ticket. That ticket was resolved in April and I did notice my download speeds improved, however upload, packet loss and ping did not. So after further investigating with the advanced team, they discovered high upload utilitization on my node and created a new trouble ticket and told me it could take months to resolve. Seven months and the issue remains unresolved.

I'm happy to say that as of November 2011, the issue has finally been resolved. I consistently get 51 down / 4.80 up / 12 ms ping. My SNR went from 34 to 40. Everything works very good now.

*Update January 30, 2012*

For the past 6 months everything been smooth, and when there was an issue like modem rebooting etc.... calling level 3 was always quick.

I would grade this service much higher if it wasnt for one problem. ON wideband time warner does not allow u access to modem control page such as seeing signal levels etc... but if you get signature wideband then you have access.

*Update May 09, 2011*

Packet loss issue been resolved for now, however I was contacted and told that regional issue with upstream/utilization is still being worked on and that I may get refund until its fixed. This is very nice support for a change!

*Update May 04, 2011*

Level 3 local tech did confirm there is dataloss/signal issue in region did not give me any estimate if and when this be fixed. This is how my TIME WARNER wideband has been for 2 weeks now more or less:

As a result I have to continue to downgrade my review grades.... not much of a choice, I can barely visit this website...

*Update May 01, 2011*

For past 2 weeks I been having packet loss and upstream issues, its got so bad I totally lose internet at evening... I have spoke with level 3 support but I have to wait week and half for a tech to come and fix this. Level 3 confirmed that this is issue at the pole or in my local area but they are forcing me to wait over a week to fix it.... Plus with wideband in nyc I have no option to go to tw center and replace modem just to ensure its not my mode thats messed up, for wideband they have stupid policy that a tech has to replace a modem.... I have had terrible problems now for 2 weeks, paying $100 for this package.... I have to lower my scores for connection reliability at the moment as this is just terrible.

*Update Jan 31, 2011*

I have upgraded to Wideband service 50/5 and few days later TW fixed an issue described in older review listed below. At this moment the speeds reach 50Mbps even during peak times, and latencies are great. The modem TW provides with wideband, they block out access to it which is a big minus. Otherwise, the service is great at the moment. Installation of wideband required a technician to run a dedicated line without splitters to my modem. This package is expensive as its $100 a month, so I expect my service to remain in top notch form for that kind of price, and at this moment it is as good as advertised. Will update this review if anything changes.

*Original Review from January 20, 2011*

I have been customer since 2003. I bought the RR Turbo Package with 20/1 package. Until december 2010 service been great, and I use internet a lot, mainly to download games(steam) and privately as I beta test. I also play games a lot. There were few problems during the years but they were resolved in a day or less. However, since mid december 2010 RoadRunner in nyc/queens started displaying terrible latency and slow speeds at peak usage times, between 8pm and 12pm in the evenings. Things got bad to the point where using internet between those hours on weekends is not an option. Especially if you try to play a game. Signal levels are great on the modem, the problem appears to be Road Runners NYC infrastructure, maybe its not catching up with demands and its overloaded. If they could resolve this problem then I would grade them as great service, but so far it doesn't look like this will get resolved. If you need internet only for basic things like browsing internet/email and maybe downloading something off peek time then I recommend Road Runner in NYC, but for serious gaming I do not recommend it.

Re: thanks

gl, I had issues recently with upstream dying, but I fuond out I can get my own modem provisioned then I could see signal stuff myself cause on the wideband modems they provide in nyc they block your access to modem in nyc.

This is whats happening so far in may 2011 in queens/rockaway park area with time warner wideband.... supposedly its region issue related. Pathetic.

A monopoly on a mission

If you live in a town with no cable competiton, you are at risk of being abused. The TW product problem department is great. Polite helpful quick and effective. Sales marketing etc. is the worse. It takes forever to get to the appropriate dept. you are trying to reach becasue their auto messaging never gets a key word. My account went up 14% year over year for the same services based upon the fact I had a speical last year though I have been a custome for 18 years. They financially force you to take the pkg they want you to take by charging more for less services. The reps are always polite. I feel bad they have to work for such a bad company. Competition is the best solution to this attitude but this clearly is not happening here.

When i signed the contract, they had promised me that i would receive a gift card. It has been almost half a year and i have still not received it yet. I have called customer service at least six time. They would always say that i would receive it shortly and it was in the mail. How can we trust them when they are such a big company yet they still lie to us?

Timewarner triple play

The last 1 -1/2 years have been a nightmare with timewarner. Cable freezes, Internet disconnects and the worse is the phone issues. Over 20 calls a day for the person who previously had the number. Collection agencies calling over and over and time Warner's solution to the problem was, that I had to pay 100.00 dollars to change the number they gave me. I argued that I didn't cause this issue that it was their responsibility. I told them that I may cancel my account and their answer was, okay do u want to close it now?. Incredibly rude, so I am cancelling my account and never dealing with them again.

I paid 50$ for their basic service for years. Decided to call and tell tham I am moving to someone else. They insisted on 50 and I insisted too that I deserve a discount. After 15 minutes of talking he finally agreed. The service is very reliable and I had no issues for the past year. Last year I had to replace to cable modems but since they moved to cisco modems everything is fine on this end.

It's your run of the mill cable modem service. It's the best option for internet right here for me. They have fair support, decent speeds (for cable modem), and pretty good uptime.

sticking with time warner!

MY BILL DOUBLED. i COULDN'T AFFORD IT. WAS GONNA LOSE THE SERVICE I GREW TO REALLY APPRECIATE....I CALLED AGAIN AND AGAIN, TRYING TO GET HELP WITH PRICES THAT WERE CLOSE TO WHAT I HAD BEEN PAYING, TWC KEPT TELLING ME ...NO, NOTHING THEY COULD OFFER ME. I ARRANGED FOR SERVICE WITH AT&T AND CALLED TO HAVE MY TWC SERVICE DISCONNECTED! THEN THINGS CHANGED! I WAS FINALLY OFFERED DISCOUNTS THAT BROUGHT MY BILL BELOW WHAT I USE TO PAY! THANK YOU TIME WARNER! YOU PUT ME THROUGH IT, BUT IN THE END YOU CAME THROUGH FOR ME...I FINALLY FELT LIKE A VALUED CUSTOMER!

Jonathan

@rr.com

Value really??

How do you feel like a valued customer when you have to call them to lower your bill which doubled. They lowered your price because they had already taken advantage of you.

If I were an average internet user shopping online for clothes, shoes, or,
just stuff, Roadrunner would be fine and I'd more than likely be happy from
sheer ignorance. Having just left a fiber optic domain carrier with much
higher band width, I can only report Roadrunner broadband as deplorable.
Service from the domain provider is all but non existent. After several
calls and even visits to an office to speak with anyone (real human being),
I've become completely frustrated with this company. As they
are the ONLY service in this area (for any real internet service) I can only
wish that someday Verizon will make inroads to my neighborhood.

A truly frustrated and UNHAPPY customer with Roadrunner and Time Warner

worst company

unbielevable they want us to stay on their company and they raise their prise 30 dollars higher with no reason. They even have the worst internet in the whole wide world. I would give them -10 star for their company. They don't even deserve to exist. I would have no internet or T.V rather than have time warner. If i new that time warner was this terrible i would've never signed up for it. If anybody wants to lose his/her money and time i'm telling you time warner would be great for you.

(update 2012-01)We have been fairly happy with our service. The price increases haven't made us very happy, though. They have been fighting the increasing rebroadcast fees and when they haven't been able to stop those increases, then it gets passed onto the consumer.

(update 2010-09)Time Warner did a software upgrade on their DVR service and it hasn't been as bad. We have the cord out from behind the entertainment center, so that it is easier to unplug, so we can reset the DVR every couple of days.

We have gotten rid of the Frontier telephone service for Time Warner's Digital Phone. We have a couple of new features on the phone and everything else is exactly the same as what we had with Frontier. However, our phone bill is half what it was with Frontier.

(update)The DVR service seems to be getting worse. Often times, when watching a show, it freezes. When watching something recorded, when fast forwarding over the commercials, the DVR seems to have a mind of it's own. When pushing the fast forward button once, it will sometimes go up to two, three or even four, instead of just one.

(update) Time Warner has been talking about putting caps on their Road Runner service and also starting a tiered plan. If they do initiate that, then we will be limiting our cable TV plans or may even get rid of it altogether, for a satellite service.

We can record two different programs with the DVR at the same time and watch something that is already recorded. Or we can watch the cable that is going straight into the TV.

You can't do any of that with any of the satellite services. We can also do Video OnDemand, which is cheaper than renting a movie and they almost always have movies as soon as they are available for rent or to buy at the store.

The only problems that we have, is that on occasion the cable box will lock up and need to be reset. A technician, said that it is because they are trying to send so much information down the cable, that it overloads the system, and is a quirk that needs to be worked out by the engineers.

My Other Reviews

·Windstream
I was a long time DSL subscriber. First with SBC (Ameritech) and later with Alltel which became Windstream.

I moved to TWC Road Runner after a miserable period of poor service and broken promised from Windstream.

TWC RR has been fantastic. I think I'm actually paying less per month and getting downloads that are 5 times faster!

The Windstream upload speed was a bit faster than TWC RR, but my current upload speed of 1mbps is not bad.

I also dropped DirecTV and Windstream telephone to buy the TWC bundle of phone, cable and internet. The TWC DVR is not as nice as the DirecTV receiver and the menus are horrible, but the on-demand and enhanced TV that TWC has is far superior to DirecTV. The fact that they offer primetime on-demand and most of the top cable channels on demand allows me to not worry about programming the DVR or even running out of room on the DVR. The shows are all on-demand.

UPDATE 1/5/12

I am currently using Time Warner Cable as a backup ISP. I currently have FIOS. I have finally gotten TWC to let me use my SB6121 Modem (12/31/11). I am currently only getting 5/5. I have submitted a request in the direct support forum to see if I can get this resolved and will see how that goes.

****************************************************************************************************
UPDATE 9/30/11

I've had TWC RR on and off for the last 5 years. my last service was from April/2011 to September/2011. I am in the process of switching over to FIOS. The connection was good but I was having a IP address issue which would only be resolved by power cycling the modem. This happened 3 days in a row. This is unacceptable.
*****************************************************************************************************
I was with Time Warner Cable form Mid 2007 to Mid 2008. I never had any Issues or outages with them. Only time I had to call tech support was to update mac address when I swapped out my cable modem from time to time. I switched from TWC to DSLExtreme FIOS in Mid 2008. One of the issues I had at the time was there were only 2 speeds available to me at the time. 7/512 and 10/1.
