I used to use 1&1's shared hosting, but I found it to be slow and oversold. I finally decided to switch to a VPS, and I found Linode. I signed up, my account was instantly activated, and I started deploying Linux. In a week, I was off 1&1, and my Linode was working wonderfully.

I'm always in their IRC chat (#linode on irc.oftc.net), and they have one of the best communities I've seen; everybody is supportive and helpful. Whenever I have a question, big or small, there's always somebody there to answer it for me.

All-in-all, I love Linode, and I will never go back to shared hosting.

I switched to Linode from a MediaTemple (gs) account about a year ago, and I have received nothing but the best service, performance, tools, and support from Linode. Their custom control panel lets you initialize a virtual server, configure it from the ground up, manage DNS, and review stats all in a friendly and easy to use manner. There are no gimmicks like you sometimes find with other services; Linode just has a well thought out and well executed system for managing one or more virtual servers.

When you do need help, they host some excellent forums with knowledgeable members who are willing to give advice on setting up a machine how you need it. And in the event a technical issue is affecting your VM's uptime or network access, a support ticket is automatically created so that the issue gets resolved promptly. In the one time I've had this happen, their support staff was on top of the issue by the time I got the email.

As you're running your own server on Linode, it does require more upfront technical know-how, but there's plenty of help to get you on your way even if you need some guidance. They are a touch more expensive than MediaTemple, but the tools and amazing support are absolutely worth it. I can't recommend Linode highly enough!
