Connectivity sucks
As with most monopoly systems, you live with it.

I considered satellite services - but all were out of reach financially, and none of them are "gaming" freindly. WHTI is the ONLY alternative broadband available where I live. I ordered 256k adsl, and we actually get something like 280 to 360 - on good days. Frequently, line static gets so bad speed deteriorates to zero, and connection is lost entirely. The ISP supplies a Zhone 6211 modem, which has been replaced three times already. I keep a Zoom 5615 available for when the Zhone craps out. Most of the tech support people are only capable of reading off a checklist, and telling the customer to reboot the router and the computer. There ARE two tech support guys who actually understand what is going on, and actually helped to some extent with configuring a Debian gateway machine.
