Freephoneline is a great service ran by Fibernetics out of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. You can get an entirely free phone number out of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary or a few other cities in about 2 minutes and with the ad-supported softphone you can make calls to quite a few cities/towns in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and BC. (see full list »www.freephoneline.ca/cityListing)

For a one-time fee of $50, they offer a configuration file to allow your account to be used with your own ATA or any SIP phone (not restricted to their softphone). They also offer long distance vouchers for various countries - Canada outside the free calling city list is 2 cents per minute. You can also use the free phone number as a number that solely forwards to your main phone number, provided that number is from a city in the 'free calling area' as well.

Customer support is decent - you can't complain too much when it's free, I guess, but it's nothing special. The value for money is undoubtedly excellent - once you pay the one-time $50 fee, you can use this as a home phone solution (again, provided you live in one of the aforementioned cities) and have a larger calling area than your landline, as well as caller ID and voicemail with no monthly fees.

I was referred to freephoneline.ca by a friend. We both use voipdiscount.com and i still do. I also use freephoneline for a secondary line. Software works great but better if you have your own ATA.

Free voicemail, free DID #, 911 access...Can't complain. $50 up front for sip access and your set.

Will update as time passes and expirence changes etc. I left Tech support rating at 3 because i haven't needed tech support yet and cannot rate what i haven't tried.

FreePhoneLine has a reasonable VOIP service. The sound is clear, and almost as good as a POTS connection. There was a bit of confusion over the analogue telephone adapter I purchased, and over the forwarding of ports on my router. When e-mailing, calling technical support, or posting on their own forums, they are always professional, and courteous.

Free Phone Line!
Requires ports forwarded. Won't really work on double NATted envrionments.
Just a free phone line as an alternative to Google Voice at the moment.

Heard about this service on RFD's forums so I decided to give it a shot. Sign up was easy. All they did was call up a phone number you have on hand (A cell phone number worked fine here!) After that they gave me a Vancouver area number (778).

The only bugger is that this VoIP service doesn't have udp transversal, so this means you need to configure your router to forward two ports (which are UDP 13000-13001) to your computer's softphone or ATA device. This means if you bring your laptop to an University that NATs IP's, then this service is just as useful as it gets.

Hey, what do you expect when they give you a phone line for like next to nothing?
