Unfortunately, we did not have a choice of Internet service provider as our apartment complex informed us that if we wanted Internet, we had to go through Spartan-Net (this should've been the first clue to run as far away as we could from both the apartment complex AND their worthless ISP). On the bright side, this meant we didn't have to deal with installation. Also, I should note that I have no idea how much our Internet service costs because it is, along with our satellite service (also provided by Spartan-Net with DirecTV, hence its reliability), is bundled in with the cost of our rent. Can you say scam?
In the past four months, our Internet service from Spartan-Net has been constantly unreliable. At its worst, it went out three times within a 7-day period, each time for many hours at a time. Despite repeated attempts to fix our Internet, we still get regular outages. It is currently out and has been out since around 3PM today (it's almost 1:30AM) and I am using my neighbor's wireless which I can only receive in my bathroom (!). My roommates and I have repeatedly called and complained about lack of service to no avail. It finally reached an all-time low when customer service hung up on me twice in a row, simply for saying, "Hi, our Internet is out" when asked by the tech support representative what the problem was. I then called and asked to speak to a supervisor and was told there was no supervisor. After explaining that I had just been hung up on twice in a row, the tech support representative (who I think was actually the same guy who had just hung up on me, though I can't be sure) told me that nobody had hung up on anybody and that, in other words, I had to be lying. This behavior was out of line and completely disrespectful.
Despite nearly weekly problems with our Internet (and I must add that all of the other residents of our apartment complex have voiced similar complaints about the ridiculously low quality of service provided), Spartan-Net continues to have outages. Clearly there is a big problem with their service that needs to be fixed and has not been adequately fixed any of the multiple times we have called to express our dissatisfaction.
I even had to turn down a job offer because one of the requirements was a reliable Internet connection, a requirement I did not feel was met by Spartan-Net's sporadic (and often nonexistent) services.
I'd like to think that this review will deter people from Spartan-Net because nobody deserves to spend money on this, but Spartan-Net basically has a monopoly on Internet in off-campus student housing and thus has no incentive to keep any of their customers happy. Stay away from this ISP, FAR AWAY. I'll only be at this apartment for another 2 months, but I am seriously considering canceling my service and getting Comcast. It's just not worth fighting with Spartan-Net anymore: they're completely unresponsive (and no, I don't care that you call to apologize about our outages, just fix the fricking problem or stop charging us).
