Nettalk is one of the worst companies out there. From the start it has been nothing but problems with their service. For a service that is supposed to allow you to make long distance phone calls it definitely does not do that. Even locals are a big problem. People try to call us and it tells them it is a long distance phone call or not in service. When we try to call most of the time it gives us a busy signal or keeps ringing but when we use any other phone like our cells the numbers we are calling are fine. If it allows us to make a call long/local after about 10-15 minutes of use it disconnects you from your call. Trying to talk to tech support has been useless. Their solution was to change our phone number as they "think" part of the problem was that they issued us a long distance phone number and not local. This service is useless and we would not ever recommend it to anyone. Save your money and also save yourself a lot of headaches. The customer service is very bad as well, they are rude and don't care. We were told a manager would call us and that never happened. With this service it did not matter how fast/good the internet service is, we have the best we can get. We had Vonage before and that was a lot better than Net talk at least we could make phone calls and not had all the problems we had with Net Talk. Net Talk is a waste of money, time and a very frustrating service and company to deal with. Stay away!!!

So about a year ago, I started my subscription with NetTALK. What a serious mistake.
I planned on using the phone line for my new business at my home office. I was issued a phone number and activated it. Everything seemed fine until a few months later, when the DUO stopped working. I had to send it back and exchange it for a new one. Recently, I got a reminder email from them to let me know it is time to renew for another year. Guess what, when I tried to renew via their site, it issued me a new number. I found out later that they had given my original number away to someone else about 6 months ago. That explains why people have not been returning my business calls! I have never heard of such negligence on the part of a telecom.

This is a great alternative service to expensive carrier phone service and more expensive VoIPs. But don't expect the same call quality as those. Also, don't expect instant technical support if you run into problems. The forum offers good support but their technical support group is overtaxed resulting in long wait times. Can be troublesome with some routers and some ports may need to be forwarded. US number area codes are available in most states but Canadian locations spotty. Setup if all goes well is a breeze. Works with most handsets including DECT. Make sure you have at least 250K upload speed. Most issues seem to be with the new DUO Wi-Fi, DUO and DUO II are less of an issue. Incoming calls can sometimes fail due to network congestion.
All said, this is a great service for normal home use. Their international calling plans are inexpensive but call quality is sometimes an issue. Would not recommend for heavy use such as a small business.

In a home with multiple cellular phones, we discovered that we were paying for a landline for the dentist to remind us of upcoming appointments and two relatives that call.
Purchased NetTalk Duo via Amazon.ca and signed up for a year. Their list of Canadian area codes wasn't complete at that time (don't know about now) so we took a Toronto number to reduce long-distance charges incurred by our relatives. If number portability is important, there is a Canadian company with a similiar service now that is offering that for a fee.
The call quality issues have increased rather than improved over time. For the price cheaper than a landline for 4 months I just signed up for another 4 years with NetTalk. A great solution for us.

My husband and I live out of the country and were so excited by Nettalk. One of the pros of it vs. competitors was that it lets you choose an area code for your phone number. What happened to us was that we chose the number we wanted and it was assigned to us- but for some reason that was never our number- people reached us at a completely different phone number entirely. Trying to sort this out was impossible. Don't let the 24/7 customer service sales pitch fool you- when you call you are a ridiculous caller number and it takes literally hours to get through. When I finally got through the only time I ever did, the person couldn't help and patched me through to tech support- I had to wait on hold for ages AGAIN and they couldn't sort out the number situation. A few months in it stopped working entirely. For the past few weeks I've sent trouble ticket after trouble ticket, email after email, to no avail. I can't call because I have no US phone, and it's radio silence from the company. I am going to throw in the towel and order a Magic Jack, crossing my fingers it's better. Save yourself the time and hassle- don't buy this product!!

| | | There are many alternatives! As PX said, there are lots of choices. In the short term, sign up for Google Voice. You'll be able to start calling immediately, using a headset or microphone on your computer. The service itself is free, though you'll pay $0.01/minute to call US numbers (except toll free). You can likely get a number in your desired city, also free, but you may need to enlist the help of a US friend to get the number "verified".
For a quality, well-supported solution that uses real phones, please post: What country are you in? In what city would you like a number? What is your approximate monthly minutes usage, incoming and outgoing to US? If you call other countries much, please provide some details.
IMO, magicJack is not suitable for someone who wants hassle-free service.

Ordered my NetTalk Duo from newegg.com for 49.99+.99 3day shipping. Received my NetTalk 3 business days later. Plugged it into my LAN, it immediately gave me a dial tone. I gave the mac address of the device, sip&rdp protocols higher priority through the QoS on my router. Call quality since is very good, with very little & almost no delay. It's been working great since for all our needs. I have it setup to forward to my Google Voice number for voicemail/messages and it also works great for the $20 brother fax machine I got for my wife's job. My Internet is U-verse 12mbit/1.5mbit . Thinking about getting another one to travel with for the price since it also works through usb. I'd highly recommend this to save some money!
UPDATE 12/26/12 - After almost a year, I am still happy with the net-talk service. It works for what I need it for, the occasional phone call that I don't use my cell for, and I forward all my missed calls to my Google Voice, which gives me my messages through email/text. I have had some problems faxing out of state but for me its not a huge deal. Occasionally I get an echo or choppy voice, but for the price I am a happy customer! Their web interface has let me block anonymous calls which filters out a ton of crap! I will be purchasing a wifi duo soon for my parents, they want to cut their 30/month twc phone which they rarely even use.

i have nettalk duo with Verizon Fios 25/25 service and struggling with tons of issues...If you need a phone for just taking messages yeah go for it but if you are planing to talk on the phone then get ready for frustration, voice break ups, delays, call drops...
I mainly wanted use their unlimited international call feature, even though i paid for one year at once, it started giving me busy signals. I opened a help desk ticket and it's been over 48 hours and no one hasn't replied back...
so bottom line is I wouldn't recommend Nettalk to anyone

| NetTalk... I've had a NetTalk device for a couple of years now and with no problems. It's attached to my always on, fixed wireless ISP. It's around $28 a year and came with a free, local telephone number for incoming calls. It's up and running 24/7 whether any of the computers are on or not. I use it like any other home phone line. | |
| | | | $12 a MONTH? Should be $30 per YEAR I just signed up fo and activated my Nettalk Duo. The cost is under $30 per year. I also ported my old number over from MagicJack. WARNING: Magicjack will try to charge you $30 to port your number - DO NOT PAY Magicjack. They will port the number over anyway, and the $30 charge is illegal according thte FCC *URL = »www.fcc.gov/guides/portability-k···roviders | |

I spend a lot of time on the phone with my fiance in Brazil. After a while I wasn't happy with the amount of money I was paying to Skype. (which is still a good service and a good option), but I was looking for something that is cheaper and does not require a PC like Magic Jack. In addition, every call I get from Brazil that uses MagicJack suffers from terrible call quality and I wanted something different. I may be relocating there soon and I would also like my friends to have a local number for them to reach me and I can call them from that is cheap. (GV is a lifesaver for txt messages).
So I did some research and found Nettalk. It had all the features that I wanted and read nothing but good reviews online.
1. Easy to setup (one line to the phone, other line to the router. EASY!)
2. Doesn't require a PC (only to register) to use
3. Device is small (luggage space is a premium)
4. Comparatively cheap
5. For my situation it's a perfect fit
Since there was about a 3 week delay from their website (this was before they started selling them at Walmart), I found somebody on Ebay that was selling it brand new, paid a little extra (like 10 more bucks and time was critical), got the device, registered it, set it up at home, then sent it off with a friend to Brazil.
I can honestly say I have been SATISFIED with this purchase (I've been using it for 3 months now). It has cut my Skype to go bill more than half, call quality has been outstanding (considering it is coming from the other side of the world), and it's a local call for both of us. My fiance has a slow 2Mbps down 300Kbps up DSL line (which drops about every other day) and like I said, the call quality is excellent.
I usually do not write reviews about products that I'm using, but I really feel compelled to write one about Nettalk and get their name out there with the other VoIP products.
If you talk to somebody on the other side of the globe frequently, and/or will be locating to another part of the globe (and cheap like me), you should definitely consider using Nettalk as a VoIP solution.
**Update 8/13/2012**
It's been a while since I've had the device and I thought I should update my review since my experience has changed with the device. I have relocated to Brazil and I use Nettalk to make phone calls to land lines in Brazil and to calls to the US. The service was working fine up until about a month ago. I can receive calls without any problems from the US and I can still make outbound calls... sometimes. For some reason more often than not the numbers that I dial are not registering with the Nettalk device. Whenever I have to make a phone call to the US or Brazil I get a busy signal. I switched phones to a dual line VTech DS6151 since I wanted to consolidate my local phone from the Cable company and have Nettalk on the same device in May. Again the service was working fine for 2 months and then I just couldn't make outbound phone calls anymore consistently.
So I called their tech support and after being on hold for about an hour and 30 minutes I finally got through to somebody. The tech support person said it has to be the phone I'm using since the entire prefix isn't being registered by the device. So naturally I had to hang up the Nettalk phone and I plugged in another phone to confirm and the issue still remained. I called tech support back and the hold time jumped to 4 hours, so I opened a trouble ticket explaining in great detail the problem I was having. The tech support rep responded, "what color is the light on the device." I responded, waited a week got a response and they said they're going to push a firmware update to the device. I rebooted the device and firmware was downloaded but the issue still remains.
However, I found a way around this. I have to go to my account on Nettalk.com and program speed dial numbers and then I'm able to successfully complete any call consistently. Since I'm pretty frugal and I should be moving back to the US within the next 14 months I'm going to put up with the inconvenience and probably switch to another VoIP provider when I move back unless they can push another firmware to resolve this problem.
So to summarize overall again it's a solid product when it's working. The value can't be beat, $120 a year for "unlimited" (I think its 2000 minutes a month in the fine print) calls to the US and land lines in Brazil. BUT if you have problems be prepared to grab a Snickers cause it's going to be a while. Their tech support is terrible (worse than Brazilian tech support actually) and I'm not convinced it's an issue with my phone since it was working for a couple of months without any issues.
***Update 8/31/2012***
I can finally dial DIDs normally. I requested an update to my ticket about 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard back. Maybe they upgraded the firmware or something but it's working normally again.
**Update 12/10/2012***
So the busy signal issue came back and on a hunch I decided to swap phones and now the Nettalk device is working like it should. I was using the Vtech DS6151 dual line phone, I guess it's not compatible with the Nettalk device. I'm now using a Vtech 6219.

| | | DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT-or you will likely be disappointed Don't buy this product until you read all customer reviews. Sorry, NetTalk does not provide a spot for customers to provide feedback directly on their site - too bad as it would give the customers something to do while they wait for hours (literally) on hold waiting to get helped. Same number for tech support, sales and customer service try it 1-866-967-1063. When you call there are no options you are put on hold with everyone else and will get a message such as last week, "You are caller number 65 with an estimated wait time of 181 minutes" or today "you are caller 34 with an estimated wait time of 80 minutes." (Just to see if I could be served I have been waiting now for 78 minutes with "an estimated wait time of 34 minutes". You do get occasional messages letting you know your placement on hold and wait time which often goes up or sometimes down just a couple of minutes). You do get to listen to very, very, very, very annoying music which plays over and over in a loop while you wait. I anticipate getting cut off as their hours of operation are very poor and based on EST which does us on PST little good. They close at 1 on SAT and it has now passed that while I have been on hold, so I imagine that if I do not get cut off I will get a message when my turn comes in another hour or so that I need to "call back during our normal hours of operation."
Don't anticipate any response to your email, at least I have not received one yet. You can create a service ticket on line and you get a canned email back indicating someone will contact you, but I have not heard from anyone regarding the ticket either. No live chat.
Maybe they have only one employee trying to do it all????
The quality of calls is very poor. Often the other party cannot hear me and we have to hang up. I have to unplug the NetTalk device, wait for it to reboot and try the call again. The call quality even then is poor. Delayed voice with feedback and cuts in and out. I only use it as an emergency backup phone and rely on my cell phone as this is not reliable whatsoever.
If you want to pay for your item on line - with such a shabby company do you want to put your credit card information on-line to them? They do post that their site is secure, but they also make other claims too. Beware. You can pay by PayPal in increments of $1, $5, $10 and $20 for a ridiculous fee for each transaction. Yes, if you want to purchase $29 you will need to make six transactions to complete this one action for a ridiculous fee each time, so be prepared to actually be paying closer to $40 rather than $29. Then the amount you paid will be posted as a calling credit amount, not for service or product.
Do not purchase this item in a store or on-line. Buy it from NetTalk directly by calling them at 1-866-967-1063. If after waiting hours on hold you finally do reach someone, ask them about call quality and call hold time. If you do decide to buy, you will deserve what you get.
Go to their site www.nettalk.com and look for Live Chat it is not there. Look for a spot for customer review/feedback. It is not there. Look for separate numbers for service, sales, customer support and see it is not there. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!
| | | NetTalk Duo I have the same experience, I purchased the product and when I got home I have a lot of questions so I called the customer support and was 55th in line. I waited for 2 hours and 51 minutes to talk to someone and after that time when My call was answered I got a busy signal. I filed a report with them and got a ticket number but, after 72 hours no one has contacted my pertaining to my system. I took it back and got a full refund. With this kind of service how can you expect anyone to buy it. To me this is just another device that is a rip off. | |

We switched from Magic Jack to this and I can't begin to tell you how disappointed we are. I never know when I have phone service. It has to be reset at least once per week. Definitely Magic Jack delivered better service. At least with them when I went to make a call it was able to go through. I get a dial tone and dial the number, but the call doesn't go anywhere. I did trouble shoot our equipment and it appears to be crappy service from net talk. I definitely would not recommend this product to anyone.

I have had netTALK DUO for two years as a second line going into my PBX. Worked great until I found some rural exchanges that would give me a fast busy. One was located in Michigan and the other in South Dakota. Eventually the one in South Dakota connected but never had the one in Michigan connect.
For 29.00 a year plus the cost of box its a good alternatives to a cell phone user that needs occasional "home" phone.
I let my account expire this month since I no longer need it and was going to give it to a relative. There is no way of dis-associating the device from my account with netTALK. I would have to change all the personal information on the account and let them take over the account that I created.
The support person I spoke with said that it's impossible to create a new account and re-assign the device to that account. So now I am sitting on something that is now destined for a landfill.
