Despicable Service - They gave my phone number to another subscriber!
The fees may look attractive, but take it form me, it's not worth it!

So about a year ago, I started my subscription with NetTALK. What a serious mistake.

I planned on using the phone line for my new business at my home office. I was issued a phone number and activated it. Everything seemed fine until a few months later, when the DUO stopped working. I had to send it back and exchange it for a new one. Recently, I got a reminder email from them to let me know it is time to renew for another year. Guess what, when I tried to renew via their site, it issued me a new number. I found out later that they had given my original number away to someone else about 6 months ago. That explains why people have not been returning my business calls! I have never heard of such negligence on the part of a telecom.

My husband and I live out of the country and were so excited by Nettalk.
One of the pros of it vs. competitors was that it lets you choose an area
code for your phone number. What happened to us was that we chose the
number we wanted and it was assigned to us- but for some reason that was
never our number- people reached us at a completely different phone number
entirely. Trying to sort this out was impossible. Don't let the 24/7
customer service sales pitch fool you- when you call you are a ridiculous
caller number and it takes literally hours to get through. When I finally
got through the only time I ever did, the person couldn't help and patched
me through to tech support- I had to wait on hold for ages AGAIN and they
couldn't sort out the number situation. A few months in it stopped working
entirely. For the past few weeks I've sent trouble ticket after trouble
ticket, email after email, to no avail. I can't call because I have no US
phone, and it's radio silence from the company. I am going to throw in the
towel and order a Magic Jack, crossing my fingers it's better. Save
yourself the time and hassle- don't buy this product!!

Proceeding blindly....

There is lots more to VoIP than NetTalk or MagicJack.

If you posted your needs and your location in the main VoIP forum then people might have useful suggestions for you.

There are many alternatives!

As PX said, there are lots of choices. In the short term, sign up for Google Voice. You'll be able to start calling immediately, using a headset or microphone on your computer. The service itself is free, though you'll pay $0.01/minute to call US numbers (except toll free). You can likely get a number in your desired city, also free, but you may need to enlist the help of a US friend to get the number "verified".

For a quality, well-supported solution that uses real phones, please post: What country are you in? In what city would you like a number? What is your approximate monthly minutes usage, incoming and outgoing to US? If you call other countries much, please provide some details.

IMO, magicJack is not suitable for someone who wants hassle-free service.

i have nettalk duo with Verizon Fios 25/25 service and struggling with tons of issues...If you need a phone for just taking messages yeah go for it but if you are planing to talk on the phone then get ready for frustration, voice break ups, delays, call drops...

I mainly wanted use their unlimited international call feature, even though i paid for one year at once, it started giving me busy signals. I opened a help desk ticket and it's been over 48 hours and no one hasn't replied back...

so bottom line is I wouldn't recommend Nettalk to anyone

NetTalk...

I've had a NetTalk device for a couple of years now and with no problems. It's attached to my always on, fixed wireless ISP. It's around $28 a year and came with a free, local telephone number for incoming calls. It's up and running 24/7 whether any of the computers are on or not. I use it like any other home phone line.

$12 a MONTH? Should be $30 per YEAR

I just signed up fo and activated my Nettalk Duo. The cost is under $30 per year. I also ported my old number over from MagicJack. WARNING: Magicjack will try to charge you $30 to port your number - DO NOT PAY Magicjack. They will port the number over anyway, and the $30 charge is illegal according thte FCC *URL = »www.fcc.gov/guides/porta ··· roviders

We switched from Magic Jack to this and I can't begin to tell you how
disappointed we are. I never know when I have phone service. It has to be
reset at least once per week. Definitely Magic Jack delivered better
service. At least with them when I went to make a call it was able to go
through. I get a dial tone and dial the number, but the call doesn't go
anywhere. I did trouble shoot our equipment and it appears to be crappy
service from net talk. I definitely would not recommend this product to
anyone.

I returned the DUO before my 30 free trial was up. I didn't like having to use a number from a city 2 hours away. Also when I called out of state I could hear the call connect but could not hear the other party. I replaced the DUO with an OOMA and it just worked out of the box and I had a local number. It cost more up front but you do get what you pay for....
