I spend a lot of time on the phone with my fiance in Brazil. After a while I wasn't happy with the amount of money I was paying to Skype. (which is still a good service and a good option), but I was looking for something that is cheaper and does not require a PC like Magic Jack. In addition, every call I get from Brazil that uses MagicJack suffers from terrible call quality and I wanted something different. I may be relocating there soon and I would also like my friends to have a local number for them to reach me and I can call them from that is cheap. (GV is a lifesaver for txt messages).

So I did some research and found Nettalk. It had all the features that I wanted and read nothing but good reviews online.

1. Easy to setup (one line to the phone, other line to the router. EASY!)

2. Doesn't require a PC (only to register) to use

3. Device is small (luggage space is a premium)

4. Comparatively cheap

5. For my situation it's a perfect fit

Since there was about a 3 week delay from their website (this was before they started selling them at Walmart), I found somebody on Ebay that was selling it brand new, paid a little extra (like 10 more bucks and time was critical), got the device, registered it, set it up at home, then sent it off with a friend to Brazil.

I can honestly say I have been SATISFIED with this purchase (I've been using it for 3 months now). It has cut my Skype to go bill more than half, call quality has been outstanding (considering it is coming from the other side of the world), and it's a local call for both of us. My fiance has a slow 2Mbps down 300Kbps up DSL line (which drops about every other day) and like I said, the call quality is excellent.

I usually do not write reviews about products that I'm using, but I really feel compelled to write one about Nettalk and get their name out there with the other VoIP products.

If you talk to somebody on the other side of the globe frequently, and/or will be locating to another part of the globe (and cheap like me), you should definitely consider using Nettalk as a VoIP solution.

**Update 8/13/2012**

It's been a while since I've had the device and I thought I should update my review since my experience has changed with the device. I have relocated to Brazil and I use Nettalk to make phone calls to land lines in Brazil and to calls to the US. The service was working fine up until about a month ago. I can receive calls without any problems from the US and I can still make outbound calls... sometimes. For some reason more often than not the numbers that I dial are not registering with the Nettalk device. Whenever I have to make a phone call to the US or Brazil I get a busy signal. I switched phones to a dual line VTech DS6151 since I wanted to consolidate my local phone from the Cable company and have Nettalk on the same device in May. Again the service was working fine for 2 months and then I just couldn't make outbound phone calls anymore consistently.

So I called their tech support and after being on hold for about an hour and 30 minutes I finally got through to somebody. The tech support person said it has to be the phone I'm using since the entire prefix isn't being registered by the device. So naturally I had to hang up the Nettalk phone and I plugged in another phone to confirm and the issue still remained. I called tech support back and the hold time jumped to 4 hours, so I opened a trouble ticket explaining in great detail the problem I was having. The tech support rep responded, "what color is the light on the device." I responded, waited a week got a response and they said they're going to push a firmware update to the device. I rebooted the device and firmware was downloaded but the issue still remains.

However, I found a way around this. I have to go to my account on Nettalk.com and program speed dial numbers and then I'm able to successfully complete any call consistently. Since I'm pretty frugal and I should be moving back to the US within the next 14 months I'm going to put up with the inconvenience and probably switch to another VoIP provider when I move back unless they can push another firmware to resolve this problem.

So to summarize overall again it's a solid product when it's working. The value can't be beat, $120 a year for "unlimited" (I think its 2000 minutes a month in the fine print) calls to the US and land lines in Brazil. BUT if you have problems be prepared to grab a Snickers cause it's going to be a while. Their tech support is terrible (worse than Brazilian tech support actually) and I'm not convinced it's an issue with my phone since it was working for a couple of months without any issues.

***Update 8/31/2012***

I can finally dial DIDs normally. I requested an update to my ticket about 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard back. Maybe they upgraded the firmware or something but it's working normally again.

**Update 12/10/2012***

So the busy signal issue came back and on a hunch I decided to swap phones and now the Nettalk device is working like it should. I was using the Vtech DS6151 dual line phone, I guess it's not compatible with the Nettalk device. I'm now using a Vtech 6219.

***Update 06/20/2013**

I'm done with NetTalk. The reason I used the device was to make international calls to Brazil and that stopped working 3 weeks ago. When I finally do get through to somebody at NetTalk support they say it will be fixed in 48 hrs but the problem still exists.

I'm going to buy an ATA device and switch over to voip.ms or Call Central. Looks cheaper, more reliable, I can actually get a hold of somebody for support, and actually looks fun to setup.

NetTalk was good while it lasted, if NetTalk had better support this would be an awesome product. I will not be renewing my service with NetTalk.

DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT-or you will likely be disappointed

Don't buy this product until you read all customer reviews. Sorry, NetTalk does not provide a spot for customers to provide feedback directly on their site - too bad as it would give the customers something to do while they wait for hours (literally) on hold waiting to get helped. Same number for tech support, sales and customer service try it 1-866-967-1063. When you call there are no options you are put on hold with everyone else and will get a message such as last week, "You are caller number 65 with an estimated wait time of 181 minutes" or today "you are caller 34 with an estimated wait time of 80 minutes." (Just to see if I could be served I have been waiting now for 78 minutes with "an estimated wait time of 34 minutes". You do get occasional messages letting you know your placement on hold and wait time which often goes up or sometimes down just a couple of minutes). You do get to listen to very, very, very, very annoying music which plays over and over in a loop while you wait. I anticipate getting cut off as their hours of operation are very poor and based on EST which does us on PST little good. They close at 1 on SAT and it has now passed that while I have been on hold, so I imagine that if I do not get cut off I will get a message when my turn comes in another hour or so that I need to "call back during our normal hours of operation."

Don't anticipate any response to your email, at least I have not received one yet. You can create a service ticket on line and you get a canned email back indicating someone will contact you, but I have not heard from anyone regarding the ticket either. No live chat.

Maybe they have only one employee trying to do it all????

The quality of calls is very poor. Often the other party cannot hear me and we have to hang up. I have to unplug the NetTalk device, wait for it to reboot and try the call again. The call quality even then is poor. Delayed voice with feedback and cuts in and out. I only use it as an emergency backup phone and rely on my cell phone as this is not reliable whatsoever.

If you want to pay for your item on line - with such a shabby company do you want to put your credit card information on-line to them? They do post that their site is secure, but they also make other claims too. Beware. You can pay by PayPal in increments of $1, $5, $10 and $20 for a ridiculous fee for each transaction. Yes, if you want to purchase $29 you will need to make six transactions to complete this one action for a ridiculous fee each time, so be prepared to actually be paying closer to $40 rather than $29. Then the amount you paid will be posted as a calling credit amount, not for service or product.

Do not purchase this item in a store or on-line. Buy it from NetTalk directly by calling them at 1-866-967-1063. If after waiting hours on hold you finally do reach someone, ask them about call quality and call hold time. If you do decide to buy, you will deserve what you get.

Go to their site www.nettalk.com and look for Live Chat it is not there. Look for a spot for customer review/feedback. It is not there. Look for separate numbers for service, sales, customer support and see it is not there. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!

NetTalk Duo

I have the same experience, I purchased the product and when I got home I have a lot of questions so I called the customer support and was 55th in line. I waited for 2 hours and 51 minutes to talk to someone and after that time when My call was answered I got a busy signal. I filed a report with them and got a ticket number but, after 72 hours no one has contacted my pertaining to my system. I took it back and got a full refund. With this kind of service how can you expect anyone to buy it. To me this is just another device that is a rip off.

Bought a year's service on the Duo Wifi, connected via ATT Uverse. Followed video tutorial and got things working soon after getting the hardware. Call quality usually fine, sometimes the lag (some of which is understandable) moved to annoying. FYI, I've had it about 10 months. I had to reboot device and occasionally the router about every 21 days. As time progressed, got to be every 36 hours. Switched from wifi to a hardwire connection which is what I wanted to avoid and that worked for awhile. Then that began the every 36 hours reboot dance. Sent a note asking for help and initially got a reply within 24 hours. When solution did not solve problem, things got slower, eventually leading to no communication.

My most recent problem is the service seems to have completely ceased. No lights of any kind on hardware device. Sent an email, was directed to try another phone as mine was probably faulty. Though I doubted it, I did try with a phone that I knew was operating properly. Checked the USB wiring, it was okay. Told this to tech support, no reply after a week. Tried to call and I kid you not was on hold for over an hour with elevator music before hanging up. Only message was a repetitive cycle of "thank you for waiting," no suggestion of how long wait might be or when might be a better time traffic-wise to call.

Tried another number to have my hardware device changed at my cost, it routed me back to the same number I had just spend over an hour on. I am stuck, out of options.

Worst Service - Beware of hidden terms and Conditions of Nettalk

Hi,

I have been using Nettalk for around 6 months . I have subscribed for an entire year paying a total of $180.58 for US calling and International Calling (India). Did not have any issues, till last month. However, last month, all of a sudden my international calling option was suspended.

On enquiry, I came to know they have put a hidden cap of 600 minutes for international calls. Their Customer Support Team works from Monday thru Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm EST. Also you need to wait for hours together to speak with Customer Support Team. It is very difficult for any working individual to spend hours together for registering complaints during working hours - Mon to Fri - 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Customer Support team said that they cannot help and I need to send mail to CS@Nettalk.com and I did... I sent half a dozen mails, demanding the reason for disconnecting international calling service, and also requested them to refund my payment on a pro rata basis. But they replied stating only 600 minutes are allowed for every month for international calls(India) and my service will be resumed on 1st. However, once I reach 600 minutes, my international calling plan will be suspended... When I asked for the location in their Terms & Conditions for their limitation of 600 minutes, I did not get any answer....

ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY COULD COMPARE THEMSELVES WITH OTHER GOOD SERVICE PROVIDERS WHO ARE PROVIDING 24X7 SUPPORT AND CLAIM THEMSELVES TO BE BETTER THAN THEM...

I do not want to continue with NETTALK and I need a refund atleast on a pro rata basis. Not sure, what to do??

Can anyone help please....???

Re: Worst Service - Beware of hidden terms and Conditions of Net

BEWARE - not for consumers
I'm guessing that most folks that purchase the Nettalk duo are home users. Yet their phone support hours are 10am-4pm eastern. SO MUCH FOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

My case, the device seemed to make and receive phone calls. But somewhere in the call, it would go to half-duplex where the other party talking stopped all conversation. Finally the call would just drop. and then nettalk equipment would have to be reset. This seemed to happen mainly with cellular calls.

I was not expecting immediate fixes to the problems. But two days and no replies to my support requests = BAD BUSINESS.

Finallly, the device won't even power up and is within the 1 year warranty period. But nettalk won't even respond to my requests for warranty replacement.

NetTalk Hit& miss

Wondering how many others have problems with outgoing calls on Net Talk like normal or rapid busy and having to re dial calls 2 or 3 times before they go thru instead of the busy signals? Have any of you had trouble with using NON digital telephones plugged into your net talk adapter ? this is now the 4th time I have used net phone services , I liked 8x8 but when they kept raising the rates compared to how much i used it i said enough , MJ well I got tired of fighting with them over connections they refused even though they were valid numbers in the NANP.

Re: NetTalk Hit& miss

I've had this for almost a year and it is unreliable. Called on issues and after 2 hours+ on hold I got no where, reset in the que more then once. To date my longest call on the unit is to tech support who just say they'll look into it and don't. I've opened 2 services calls and the only replies I've got were them saying i didn't respond and the call was being closed. No question was posed to me to reply to though. To date I've had every issue known. Calls ring and then drop without being answered. No dial tone. automated systems that require input via key presses doesn't work. Inbound calls going directly to voicemail. Inbound calls telling callers the number is not available.

Long story short if you want something that is reliable this sure isn't it. If it works your fine if it doesn't though that is pretty much it you'll NEVER get it fixed.

Nettalk should be prosecuted!

Hi,
Problem after problem with even bigger impact everytime.
If you are patient to be on-hold for hours, you will benefit from the live support but other than that, the quality of service, reliability, is worst than your wildest dreams:(
I have had many FREE voip and none of them had issue even close to what paid service as nettalk has given me.
They may have cool idea or plan but as of 2013, better stay away from Nettalk unless you have not a high value for your money, time, even yourself and loved ones who are being dragged into using such a poor service.
They might be going through improvement stage or something(IF we think positively!) but they don't even bother explaining it and admit it honestly!
I think such a poor service will help bigger companies to keep people from other good VOIP provider out there and from that perspective Nettalk owe a good service to not only their paying customers but other people who are in in VOIP business.
Disappointed,annoyed,troubled customer:(
Good job all other VOIP provider, Bud,Dell,Google and many others and Bad Nettalk, Bad:(

But not only this, they sell fake plans! We paid for unlimited (3000 minutes per month) international calling plan for 1 year and now suddenly without any notice they cut the calling time to 600 minutes!! Customer care phone waiting time is HOURS (No wonder..)! And when we mail them, they do not reply for weeks... And when they reply, they say "This is how it will be. Service Outage in Canada...
Re-upped and then it went down

I just renewed my service. My unit worked. I have never had to rely on their customer service or tech help for much. So I am really disappointed in their service with this issue.

My in coming calls are being met with a FAST BUSY signal or some callers are getting "ALL CIRCUITS ARE BUSY"

Nettalk admits this is their network problem. The problem arose 5 days ago. Four days ago they attached a voice announcement on their customer service line about the outage in Canada to some lines/numbers. And its still not up.

My phone line cannot be forwarded to any other phone number in their service or with another carrier. I can choose another phone number, but then I abandon the old number and cannot return to it. Even WHEN? their service is fixed.

So my phone number is held hostage. I can choose to export my phone number to another carrier. But I understand that takes months.

We do not have many details about the anomaly, except that we are working on restoring calls back to Canadian Customers as quickly and as effectively as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please bring it to the attention of Connect@nettalk.com with the subject DSLREPORTS

This is most certainly not an isolated case. It's Canada-wide. It's happening to my Nettalk device in Ottawa. I suspect (IMHO) that Nettalk didn't pay their bills to their fiber service provider in Canada, and the service was 'cut' (financially speaking, not physically). 5 days of no incoming calls is unacceptable.

After THREE weeks having problems, some of them really serious like having dropped important calls from possible employers, your bank, a familiar emergency, and so on... Even your low prices justify this kind of bad services and you are showing a complete lack of capacity to handle your business working.
What a pity, this does not compare with good references I found in "PC Magazine" and was what led me to decide for your services.

This is NOT an isolated Case, I am in Spokane WA and been down for weeks, unfortunately it is a business line. I have sent support questions with no answer and cannot get through to support.

Did they go out of business?

No incoming calls

I noticed the no incoming calls for a week now. I raised a ticket but no one has bothered to look at it. I called them, and got no answer from them, then I mentioned their voice announcement and asked if it is related, they said yes.

To the one who is saying that he can change hi number, I tried to change my number several times from different provinces and towns, but this was not successful.

Definitely NOT isolated; down here in Toronto, ON

This becoming to be beyond ridiculous!

Been down since last Thur. Apr. 18th 2013. I can make outgoing no problem, but no incoming... just get a busy signal (I tried using my cell).
I realize that NetTalk has posted in their Knowledgebase a note, acknowledging the issue and that they are working on it... but it's been almost a week now, and they don't even bother to update their Knowledgebase with any updates on the issue!

Does a cut fiber really take this long to resolve?

I am really not impressed at all!

Agreed with dsltekie. I'm getting frustrated with NetTalk also. The problem occurred 9-10 days ago and NetTalk hasn't been able to resolved. It's time to ditch the service and go with someone else.
Do you guys/gals have any recommended alternatives to NetTalk?

How long can it take?

It has been about 7 days now that Canadians can't receive incoming calls. Voice message on the NetTalk service number indicates that it is a network fibre problem. Sorry, that excuse is wearing a bit thin after a week.
My US-based NetTalk works just fine as do outgoing Canadian NetTalk calls. This really doesn't seem like it should be that difficult, or perhaps NetTalk just isn't treating this issue with the urgency it deserves.

Hopeless

I was on hold for 1 hour before I spoke with someone at customer service. Also, I got a reply from my original ticket that gave me the spiel about a fibre cut. Since then they have not responded.

What a hopeless response to this problem. The outage has been a week now. I suspect that the fibre cut must be at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, or perhaps on the Mare Tranquillitatis.

My phone service has been out of service for about two weeks. Burlington, Ontario.

I DO NOT RECEIVE IN BOUND CALLS-PEOPLE GET A BUSY TONE YET I CAN CALL OUTBOUND NUMBERS!!!!

YOUR AUTO MESSAGE STATES THAT FIBER OPTIC LINES HAVE BEEN CUT, THAT'S B.S BECAUSE THE LARGE COMMUNICATIONS FIRMS WOULD NEVER LEAVE a broken fiber optic line/service UNATTENDED FOR THAT LONG! SORRY YOU ARE TRYING TO SNOW PEOPLE WITH THAT MESSAGE...

IT IS ABOUT TIME YOU DID YOU WHAT WAS NECESSARY TO RESTORE THE SERVICE TO MY PHONE LINE AND OTHERS.

I HAVE ALSO CALLED IN TWICE TODAY (MAY 1, 20130) AND THE LINES WERE DROPPED ON TWO OCCASIONS WHILE MY SERVICE ON MY CELL IS VERY GOOD SO IT APPEARS TO BE ON YOUR SIDE.

I provided a call back number and have been waiting for 30 minutes for a call back!! I HAVE HAD TO WAIT AT LEAST 1 1/2 HOURS TODAY JUST TO GET SOMEONE ON THE LINE! In total 2hrs on something that ought to have been repaired weeks ago...now that's service to the highest degree wouldn't you say??

Are you guys going bankrupt??

frustrated client for about two years, I am planning to change service provider!!

Nettalk, no incoming calls in Canada...

In my case, the issue was resolved by being assigned a new telephone number through their NetTalk's Facebook page, when I used the Facebook's message to contact them.

Good communication, resolved quickly!

The rumor is confirmed, I lost my original number in the process for a new one... This is the answer I've got: "Unfortunately the number in your account is not allowing incoming calls. we do not know why."

For the price I pay, I don't mind... Just happy I can receive calls again!

They lost or sold our numbers to other companies

If you didn't receive any feedback from nettalk yet, I'll be the one announcing you that you lost your phone number EVEN if in the past few days they told you otherwise. They sent a message asking everyone who couldn't receive calls to change their phone number on the profile page. I hope for you guys their is still some numbers available in your area since I know some people for whom it wasn't the case. For example, if you live in Quebec City, you won't be able to get a new one.

Still out in Toronto 5/01/13

I went to a basic cell plan with Mobilicity after over a week of being cut off. I've written off my Nettalk service. At least I had it for most of the year after renewing without many issues from last year. I've been told my call quality is much better with the cell as well. This technology has a place, but it doesn't seem to be there quite yet.

The worst service ever

Same goes for me.
I noticed few month ago that some calls to my nettalk number fails. Some times ONE ring and then busy tone, some time fast busy tone immediately.
For the past few weeks it a fast busy tone immediately and all the time.. calling in always fails.
I have 2 other magic jack + and I never had any problem with their service. I regret buying nettalk and regret renewing the service. I will not renew it again.

Tried to go on my account and change the phone number but I could not change the number through nettalk web site
Very frustrating.

NetTalk changed phone number

NetTalk changed our home phone number yesterday May 2 without notice, found out when call received from home with new number on call display. I requested confirmation with NetTalk customer service at cs@nettalk.com and got quick reply. Problem solved but have to advise all contacts of the change. Worth the savings anyway.

I lost my local Windsor number. They assigned a Toronto number which I changed to a Chatham number as no Windsor number was available. This just sucks and now regret having signed up for five years.
