$75 per month "Good service up till now" "No support for Tivo boxes with their new cable boxes - with no warning!" "I have lost faith in Hargray's ability to service my cable needs"

I have been a satisfied Hargray customer (phone, internet, TV) for several years - until recently.
Last week Hargray replaced my cable boxes with a newer model that as far as I can tell has made no appreciable difference in my service. The new boxes will not talk to my Tivo boxes. After several service calls and telephone calls the answer is that Hargray's new cable software (provided by Microsoft) blocks Tivo, and I am just out of luck. These are Tivo boxes for which I have lifetime service, so keeping them going is really important.
The net of it is that a "transparent" change (not requested by me) has left me without the ability to use my Tivo equipment. I am not happy, and actively pursuing other cable options.

I have had Hargray high speed for years now, actually I was the first on my street to sign up. Originally it was DSL with problems then they switched everyone to cable, still problems with latency and speed. Hargray in the last month did a lot of work fixing cable breaks and upgrading to DOCIS 3.0 and it actually worked. My 3 meg down load is coming in at 3.2 at any time of day and as soon as I drop by the office for a new modem I'll have 5 meg down for $39.99. Tiers are now 5, 10 and 20 megs download. Up load still slow I know my line gets 500 KPS right now but I think switch to a new modem gets me 1 meg up load speeds.
Over all everything work great.
Update, no need for a new modem I just called and was upgrades to 5meg down 1 up. I'm grandfathered in so I don't need to pay a rental fee for a modem but others will have to pay 4.99 a month. The price has also gone up if you don't have one of their "bundled" packages, BTW you need to get everything in writing if you get services from Hargray they have gone cell phone and will basically low ball every number they give you expecting to later blame price differences on taxes etc. They pulled some crap on my landline phone price so now I just use a tracfone and have cancelled my landline which boosted my internet bill to 46.99 a month for 5 megs.
Over all my service works well, up almost always, speed and latency consistence day round. Can't complain about anything.

| Update I live in Bluffton, Heritage Lakes to be exact and here's my latest update. Service has been smooth with low latency for at least 9 months now, smooth sailing. 5 meg down and I have no problem streaming Netflix in HD on one device or good quality to two or three devices at a time. No complaints. My only problem is I might have to upgrade to the 10 meg tier since I just get lifeline basic for cable and stream a lot of internet content now. FYI, if you have the life line cable service you will get all the major channels in HD, NBC, FOX, ABC, CW,PBS etc. Just let your TV scan for the channels and there they are in HD and 5.1. For that matter they have no way of blocking out lifeline basic channels or the HD channels if you order internet service so if you want to be cheap, internet service and no cable will get you the major network channels for free. Add Netflix or whatever and you can get a lot of bang for your buck. | |

The Cable service takes 10 minutes to "warm up" the DVR works sometimes and doesn't others. I was without internet for 2 days. The only thing that works is the phone service.

Coming from the Atlanta metro area, with an abundance of providers, I was a little nervous about moving to an area with limited cable providers. My selection with Hargray confirmed my fears. This company has done nothing but disappoint me. The technicians used profanity in my home, the customer support is not helpful and has never returned any of the calls they promised, and the service does not compare to what you can find in a large city. The internet is spotty and even though I am paying for High Definition tv, the channels go out at random. Forget getting any help when trying to report this on the phone or online. The "online tech support" does not work. I would be better of not paying for service, because it seems hargray does not spend any time or money investing in their service either.

 | | Hargray This is why I got rid of them for tv service and went with DirecTV. I am getting everything I had with Hargray plus some for only $49 and some change a month (that includes taxes). It's unfortunate that I still have to use them for Internet but I have to have hi-speed and they're the only ones that offer it in the Bluffton area. I just recently upgraded to the 20Mbps package at an ungodly rate of $89 a month but even w/ that price and the DirecTV package, I am still paying less then when I had them for tv service w/ the 10Mbps bundled deal. Go figure. Hopefully Comcast or Timewarner moves in here soon to create some competition. In Orlando you can get the 40Mbps package w/ speedboost for the same price as what I am paying for 20Mbps. Ugh. | |
| | | | Re: Hargray I'm moving to the Bluffton/Okatie area in a few weeks and was afraid I'd have no choice in Internet provider. I too hope some competition makes it in soon =-(
Are you getting a lot of packet loss etc. through them? I play online games and stream Netflix currently. | |
