After trying all the local WISPS and being sorely disappointed, I accepted the fact that I had no choice but to pay for a T1 line or live in dial up hell. After 3 years of paying for a T1, I discovered a new service (Next Step WiFi) that made some really bold claims about how good their service was.

Being very skeptical, I had them come out and test to see if they could get a signal. I live right on the "fringe" of their coverage map (a bit over 5 miles) so expectations were not very high. I called on a Saturday and they had an installer at my house on Monday morning. We got a 2 out of 5 signal strength which he said was good enough for 3meg up and 3meg down service. I laughed at this.

I ran at least 20 speedtests and measured ping and packet loss. I ran it side by side against my existing T1 line and could not believe the results. Even at only a "2" signal strenth I was getting more than 3 megs up and down and had BETTER ping times than my T1 when pinging yahoo, google, and msn. Packet loss is always the killer for wireless. Zero packet loss here.

So, I can't wait to fill out the paperwork. Well, there was no paperwork. All I had to do was turn on my computer and it directed me to their portal. I chose a package that I wanted, entered my card, and was off to the races. I really like how you buy a months service with no contract. There is an install fee but they broke it up into payments as well.

Being super satisfied, the service got its first weather test two days after the install. Rain was always a connection killer with the WISPS I had previously. For that matter, my T1 had problems everytime we got a big rain and the phone company would have to come out and reset things. I would experience outages for days at a time. Anyway, it was POURING down and the Next Step Wifi connection stayed solid.

My first tech problem came up about 3 weeks into service. I wanted to put my service on a wireless router so that I could use my laptop around the house. After not being able to get a connection through my router, I called the number listed on their website. I didnt realize it was after 7pm and didnt really expect to get an answer, but Nick (I think he is the owner) answered promptly and walked me through my issue in less than 5 minutes.

So far this is the best internet service I have ever had and I have had alot. I hope that, as they continue to grow, they can maintain this level of service.
