    Name: Chris

    Speed Ordered: 1.5M/384K

    Speed Delivered: 1.5M/384K

    Monthly fee: $89.00

Order/Install process: I was truly amazed after all the difficulties I had with my previous provider Telocity, at how well everything went with Concentric. The order was processed quickly by a friendly sales person, that kept me informed every step of the way. The Covad installer that came out was knowledgable and friendly. (He had 12 years of networking experience) The service worked from day one flawlessly.

Speed of actual service: I have run several web based tests on my service, and in general it runs about 750K+. My actual experience downloading has been closer to 1.5M. I have 3 computers running on my network at the same time, and don't notice any loss of connection speed.

IP Addresses: Concentric provides 4 static IP addresses. I am currently running my own web and mail server from my home!

Technical support: I have only had one occasion to call technical support, and they were very helpful. (The call was about their web hosting, not a real problem with the service.)

This is my second DSL provider, and I can't say enough good things about them. If you are interested in my experiences with my previous provider, you can check out this link: »www.foobar-online.com/dsl.htm

Wouldn't it just figure?? XO dropped out of the ADSL business, leaving me with a choice of finding another DSL provider or going with a Cable Modem. I looked at all the options, and Cable was cheaper and pretty stable from what other people in my area told me. I decided to make the switch to MediaOne Road Runner.

    3/9/00

    Hello all-

Well after 2 cities, and 5 years of drooling over getting high speed access at my home (first ISDN, then cable, then DSL), I can finally get SOMETHING.

Now, I must first tell you I am a Senior Network Administrator for a large financial corporation. So I am *VERY* particular on networks and the internet. Everythinmg to me is CRUICAL.

My first instinct was to go with Flashcom because a friend of mine had the service and highly recommended it. Well.. after 30 days of waiting I got a call from them saying my CO wasn't ready yet. So I cancelled my order and waited. (Note: I still havent recieved my 100 bux back for my deposit with flashcom)

2 Months later, I called Bell Atlantique's New York sales office to see if my CO was ready.. and it was ready (yipeee!) So I started looking at different providers, reading news groups reviews about different providers, and looking at this site. I was split between Speakeasy, iNYC (which had ALL good reviews on this site), and Concentric.

I am also a power user so I wanted the following things on on DSL line:

    1. DSL Router/Bridge (NOT an internal card or USB device)
    2. More than 1 static IP address
    3. Web Space on their server
    4. Domain Hosting and Domainizing of the Static Ips
    5. Atleast 768/384 Speed
    6. ISP that doesnt care if I run a personal webserver or mail server.

Well after calling each ISP I decided to go with Concentric. Concentric offered me everything I wanted and more. Concentric said in the Boston Area they stopped offering the 786/384 service BUT was offering 1.54MB/384 for the same price. That was the kicker that made me go with Concentric.

Now I wasnt a fan of concentric when I used their dialup service. It was mediocre at best, but it worked (unlike some dialup ISPs). BUT on this site I heard many many different good reports about concentric, so I decided to give them a try.

When I called and ordered, I spoke with a lovely woman who answered all the questions I had. The key thing that I look for in ISPs.. is when I call, are the people on the other end technical, or are they reading off cue cards to give you generic answers. Well the key question that I as is:

"Can I domainize my static IPs with my own domain?"

The lady said yes, and told me how I would go about doing that once the DSL is installed. This was a BIG plus, it just shows me that Concentric hires people who know the technology and can answer questions at it.

So the order is in.. 3 days later I recieved confirmation from Covad that within 7-10 days we'd recieve an installation date.

So we shall see. I will keep this thing updated as events occur.

    3/15/00

Today we recieved our appointment date from COVAD for 3/22/99. Everything seems to be going ok. We'll see if the COVAD person shows up. I'm leary now after the Concentric review from the guy in a neighboring town (Winchester), thou I go thru a switch in Malden, MA, which is a bigger switch as I understand, so we shall see what happens.

    I'll keep things posted.

    -- Kris

    3/21/00

Yesterday we recived our information from Concentric concerning IP setup and stuff. And today we've recieved 3 calls from COVAD reminding us to be home tomarrow to allow the COVAD guy entrance to our apartment to finish the install. (Nice that COVAD calls us this many times)

Also, today the Bell Atlantique guy came and was checking out our lines on the house and said he was going to make sure there was a pair ready for the DSL Line tomarrow. I told the BA guy that I didnt think there was any free lines, as I live in a multi-family dewelling, and between the 3 apartments we have 5 telephone lines. BA says if that is the case, they would be back tomarrow morning to string a new pair to the house.

We'll see if BA comes back (I dont know if he did find a pair for the DSL this afternoon), and if COVAD comes to their appointment. I will know tomarrow.

Over all, everything is going very well and speedy.

    -- Kris

    *******************

    3/22/00

Well first off I need to say that Bell Atlantique is the WORST company to deal with.

As I thought late last night after the Bell Atlantique guy left, that they arent going to come back to string a new line in time for the COVAD guy to finish the installation. And of course, I was correct.

The guy from COVAD was very nice and showed up in a timely fashion, but since BA screwed up, its going to be 1-5 working days until BA can come out here and install a new pair for the DSL, THEN we have to wait for another COVAD appointment, so it could be up to 2 weeks before we could see DSL. *grumble*

I do have to say that the gentleman I spoke with at Concentric was very nice, and I dont see it being theirs or COVAD's fault.. its just Bell Atlantique sucks.

Ill keep posting updates as I get them

    -- Kris

    *************************

    3/30/00

Today we recieved confirmation from Concentric that Bell Atlantique will be coming back to the house next Tuesday to install the circuit. So much for "1 to 5 business days" for BA to come out and correct DSL circuit problems.

Now once that is done, we just have to wait again for a COVAD appointment, and from what the COVAD installer told us the last time he visited, he wasnt very busy in our area, and that reschedualed DSL installations take priority over new ones. So it shouldn't be long.

I however know that I am not letting the BA guy leave until I am shown there is a working circuit with a signal =)

    -- Kris

    **********************

    04/05/00

Yesterday, Bell Atlantique came out to the house to install the circuit. I stood out there and watched him install it. Which he did, they had to string a new circuit to the house and wire it up.

As far as BA is concerned its a working circuit. BA says we are about 10,000 feet from the CO, rather than the 7,000 feet this website told us. (Not bad for a guestimate). Thankfully we are still withing the 12000 feet needed for 1.5MB DSL.

We've already gotten our re-schedualed COVAD appointment for Friday.. lets home it goes right, or I will go on a shooting rampage

Its been over a month since we placed our first order.. If we do get DSL by friday I will be impressed. (even thou we had difficulties).

    *****************************

    4/11/99

Well after 40-some-odd days since I ordered, I finally have DSL. It was installed yesterday, and works GREAT! I cannot believe the download speeds, and some points I was getting close to 1MB in transfere rate.

From what I can tell from downloading during peak times, Concentric has enuff bandwith for their users during peak times. I didnt see any slowness at all. The only thing I do not like about Concentric is that they have 1 pop, which is in Chicago. BUT its ok because you are usually (for us atleast) are 3 hops to the backbone, and its nice and speedy.

So over all, from 1 day of having it. I would highly recommend Concentric, but I would say when you recieve your COVAD and teleco appointments, to follow up with the respected companies to make SURE that appointment is verified.
BUT over all, it has been alot less painful than I thought, and I am now glad to have it!

    **************************************

    5/17/00

Its been over a month since my DSL Service was installed, and I've decided to update my profile here.

Overall the service I get from Concentric is *VERY* good. The uptime of the service is good, thou there are 5-10 mins breaks every so often where it goes down. This doesnt happen often, but when it does, its usually not the DSL Circuit, its usually a router problem in Chicago. BUT for me, going down for 10 minutes is acceptable downtime, as long as its not a frequent occurance. (Its happened twice since I've had the service).

I however have had the actual circuit go down once, but it was at 2am, and there was a note on their Network Status Page about it. It said it was going to be down for about 2 hours for maintinence. This is acceptable to me for maintinence, especially when its done at off-peak hours.

In terms of speed... Its been good. I fluxuate between 400k-700k normally. BUT sometimes max out at 1.2MB. It really depends on the website I am going too. I also notice that right after 10:30pm EST every evening the speed DRAMATICALLY picks up. (It is VERY noticable after that time). Which is good for me because I am a night owl.

In terms of Internet Routing... One of the good points of Concentric is that they do alot of peering with other providers. I am about 7 hops away from the Microsoft Network (msft.net). (download speeds off Microsoft/Coxion RULE). AND
I am also 4 hops to the MediaOne Network. This is means, for me, transfereing files in and off MediaOne is SUPER fast. This suprises me that Concentric would choose to peer with a competitor.

Concentric also peers with many other providers. Its very rare I cant get to a site because of routing. They choice routing setup, so if one link goes down, everything routes elsewhere.

    In Terms of Technical Support...

As helpful as their technical support people are, I had to take one star off my rating for support because it takes longer than 30 minutes to get someone on the telephone, and takes up to 2-3 days to get a responce via email. BUT I do have to say, when I do get a tech support person on the telephone, they usually are quite helpful and polite.

This is very much demonstrated with the problem I had with my DNS Server I run off my DSL line. I had Concentric delegate my IPs to my name server at home, so I could do my own DNS. Which is very cool to begin with. I've worked for a few ISPs myself and when it gets to be THAT technical, most ISPs (i.e. MediaOne) will tell you "You're on your own here", and refuse to help. Well.. Not Concentric. They helped me diagnose my DNS problems and helped me correct it. To me that is a big big plus and they are committed to customer service.

In closure.. overall I am quite happy with my service, and hope it stays as good as I have it now as time goes on. I would highly recommend Concentric to ANYONE who is a power user and needs special assitance.

    2/6/02

    Hello All-

I am updating my profile here to gripe about my service. Its not really XO at all but more of a Verizon/COVAD complaint.

Its now been almost 2 full years since I've had the service installed, and all and all I am still a happy camper with XO, even though XO does not offer residential service anymore (and if I move I cannot take my XO service with me). Overall with XO the service has been good, I think we've had a 98% uptime with our DSL service over the past 2 years, and I think the most our service was out (up until recent events) was about 6 hours at most, and was a problem because of a snow storm in our area (Power failure in Chelmsford, MA where XO has its equiptment). BUT other than that a few outages for maybe a half an hour here and there but its nothing really to complain about for residential type service.

XO does have a few technical support problems but we've worked thru them, and I am technical myself so I am willing to overlook some stuff. XO does however have a problem with calling customers back when you've opened a ticket, and I have had repeatedly had to call them to get updates and such when we've had major outages in my area (not many, but we've had a few). BUT oh well, I can't blame an entire company for a few bad apples =)

    Now on to recent events....

I first off have to say I live in a multi family home and we've got telephone wires running around the building like we're a small central office (2 telephone lines for each apartment and there's 3 apartments). So we've got our share of wiring problems in the building.

Well, the tenant who lives on the 3rd floor moved to the 1st floor, and needed to have his telephones moved. His lines came in to a 2 line NID on the right side of the building, while my DSL and the other telephone lines come into the 8-line NID on the left side of the building. So Verizon was out here last saturday to move the tenants telephone from one side of the building to the other (where the 1st floor apt's lines are), and in the process he disconnected my DSL line. However, on the NID where my DSL line is, it is CLEARLY marked "Covad Communications" so there should have been no confusion.

However I feel that this was just sheer laziness on the technician's side. Over the past few weeks the power company has been putting new poles on our street and they havent completely finish the project since the old poles are still standing right next to the new poles. BUT in the process NStar (the power company) butted the new pole right next to the old pole and BLOCKED the telephone access panel on the pole so that Verizon could not get to the panel. And because of this, the technician that was out here on saturday couldn't run a new wire from the pole to the house, and just tested our DSL line, didnt hear a dialtone or any responce on our line and just assumed it was a free pair and moved the tenants telephone to our DSL line out of laziness, instead of actually entering the premise and see how the wiring in our building is run (which incidently all runs to the same location in the basement anyways), and just switched the wires in the basement, rather than on the NID. (Are you confused yet?) OR Petition NStar to come move the old pole so he could access the telephone panel on the pole. And on a side note, he still did NOT get my neighbor's phone to work (had the wiring all wrong anyways), so he still should have entered the premise and saw how the internal wiring was done. (Neighbor was home on saturday too, to boot!)

So I had to make a call to XO, who had to make a call to Covad, who LUCKILY was able to get a Verizon tech out here on Monday to come and take a look at the problem. I, myself, on Saturday night (in the freezing cold), went out to the NID and tried to make my line work again, and discovered how everything in the building really was wired up. (and *I* got the neighbor's telephone to work)

On Monday, a "smart" Verizon tech, whose name was Lee, came out to survey our DSL problem, and took a look at the wiring inside and outside, and came to the conclusion that the tech from saturday could have just strung an inside wire to make the neighbor's telephone work from the left side of the house. Lee also reverse what was done on Saturday and made my DSL work again, and fix the neighbor's telephone in the process. So everything was fine... so we thought.

BUT because my copper pair is managed by Covad, Lee had to make a call to Covad to tell them what was going on, and such. And in the process, Covad re-tested the line and said we were 19,000 feet from the central office. Lee said the guy was messed and that we could not possibly be that far from the Central Office since our DSL would not work period, or we would not get speeds that we see (I do get 1.54MB as i am suppost to most of the time). And for the fact that when I had the DSL installed were 9,843 feet from the Central Office. Lee said he would report that to Covad and see what they say.

Well today (Wednesday), I actually was home during the day, and half asleep in bed, and I heard the doorbell ring. And it was Lee from Verizon!!!! He said that Covad had called his office in Woburn, and as he put it, "Rudely" told Verizon to cut our line reguardless if it was a working line or not. Atleast it was Lee, and he was already familar with the situation and knew our line worked. Lee stated he had to do some testing and test the circuit again for length and would pressure Covad into not disconnecting the line. BUT he had to test as apart of his work order.

So I decided to get COVAD on the phone and give them a peice of my mind. I stated that my line has been functional for almost 2 years, and that I've never had any service problems, no latency problems, no drop offs, no non-sync messages, and its been working almost non stop for that duration. Covad stated that since we were now out of their supported range they WOULD have to cut us off reguardless, yadda yadda yadda. And that somewhere along the way Verizon must have re-routed our copper pair to add 10,000 feet to the line, and now its unsupported. I told Covad that "Doncha think that we would have noticed this as soon as Verizon did this?". He didnt have an answer, but told me to wait for the Verizon guy to finish his work and he will report back to Covad his findings are.

Lee from Verizon tested our line, and yes, Covad is correct, we are 21,427 feet from the central office now. Lee also said that last summer Verizon re-strung a new trunk to this neighborhood and switched everyone in my neighborhood to that line and now my DSL routes out a totally different way to the Malden Central Office (Via Medford Square, rather than to Haynes Square which is the shorter distance). Lee said that he and his crew were the ones who did the wiring in this area, so he's quite familar with what they did. BUT this works to our advantage since Lee said he could possible remove 3,000 feet from our circuit just by making a few changes at the wire box at the end of my street. Which Lee Did, so now we are about 18,264 feet from the central office, and he said that if we needed more length removed because Covad is complaing about it OR we were having download slowness problems, just to file another complaint with Covad and have them dispatch HIM (Lee) as the technician and he would fix it for us, until we were within the proper length for Covad service.

Lee did call covad back and test the line again, and we're still too far for Covad to support the line. BUT Lee was like "Here you talk to the customer and have him tell you" (which leads me to believe the same people I talk to at Covad are NOT the ones who verizon talks too). So I told the Covad Guy, Brian, that we're happy with the service, we've had no problems over the past 2 years, we get the speeds we're suppost to, and please to just leave it alone, its not broken, so don't try to fix it. Brian @ Covad said he would make a note on the account that we were beyond the supported length, BUT the circuit is working and customer is happy and to "Just leave it alone". Brian did also say that if our circuit does go out, that the next Verizon/Covad technician would not be so helpful if we were to call and complain about service.

So as far as today, we're up and working and still happy with XO, however I did learn a few things about how this whole Verizon/Covad DSL thing works.

    1. The minute you loose sync your DSL and you are there to notice, go look out at your NID and see if anyone is working on it. (I was home and online at the time my DSL was cut but didnt bother to look).

    2. ADSL service *CAN* work up to full speeds beyond the suggested wire length. (We're 6,000 feet over our limit and we're working OK). So the 12,000 feet is kinda BS.

    3. Some Verizon Techs are lazy and idiotic. And some Verizon Techs are actually nice guys who are willing to help you out even if they don't manage the copper. (I'm lucky, because Lee is also a neighbor 4 houses down)

    4. Verizon is out to sabatoge any non-bell DSL outfit because Verizon techs *CAN* reduce the wire length if need be to make a DSL circuit work, they just choose not to do so. Which makes alot of sense, since in essence, DSL is really just a 2 wire ATM circuit, and Verizon would have to do this if I was a T1/Frame customer. (Customers pay for footage on frame connections, so the shorter it is, the less the customer has to pay).

    5. And Covad only believes in their numbers for wire lengths. I believe that more people would be able to get DSL if Covad would take a chance and just test and see if DSL will work outside of their wire length range.

    6. If I ever decide to leave XO for another provider, I probualy could not get DSL again because Covad might not allow me to keep my exisiting circuit because of wire length (or the new ISP won't work with me).

Thanks for listening to my looooooooooooong story.. I'll keep updating if anything changes.

    -- Kris

I ordered XO's HomeOffice dsl package online in September and I found the process to be very easy and straighforward. BellAtlantic installed a new local loop two weeks after ordering, and Covad came out the week after that to do the interior wiring. They found a problem with the loop which necessitated BA to come out again (ugh), and then Covad had to come one last time to verify the setup on Day 30. All in all, rather painless and fast given that BA had just finished striking the month before!

As for XO, I have had no downtime with my DSL link or Internet connectivity. After doing my research I settled on this package because it has a lot of features (4 static ips, 1.5/384, web hosting) for only $89 which is not a lot more compared to what others are charging for those features (if they do have them). I know that a lot of XO/Concentric California users posting in this forum seem to have problems with this ISP, but for my area consider me a happy user.

Update - I had to move out of my location after a year, and now that XO has decided go after only the business market I couldn't stay with them. I never had any trouble with them, their tech support or the service. It just plain worked and worked well, and I'll miss having to look for another provider. :-(

We are an ASP that provides connectivity to our end users using DSL/VPN and Frame solutions. We started using XO to provide a larger amount of service to our clients in November '00. Since March '01 the service level has been horrendous. Out lines frequently go down for no good reason. We can watch the whole XO network, or large segments, go down and often inform their tech support department of the problems. Yesterday the network dropped for 10 minutes. When I spoke to customer support they informed me it was not their problem but all Covad routers dropped - none of our UUNet lines, which use Covad, dropped at this point in time! We can see when maintenance affects our lines (routing changes, etc) but will be told that nothing has changed. We continually have to deal with support folks who have no clue and are not empowered to help solve the problem. On one particular line we have over 7 tickets opened which cover nearly the 4 months of the line being installed. They have sent a technician to the site and we are still required to do "co-op" testing every time we call in for service. The customer is ready to throw the router and us out of the window.

If you are ordering a single line - stay away. If you are ordering multiple lines run as fast as you can away from them...never - never- never order XO service. I will cause you endless hours of grief. I am currently in the process of cancelling all of our 20+ lines from them (and they wanted me to put our colocation site in their buildings and to get our t1/t3 access through them...haha).

Since XO we have installed about 40+ DSL lines through UUNet, PacBell, Verrizon, Speakeasy and NAS. They all far outperform XO but perhaps that is due to XO setting my performance expectations at the basement level.

PS. Do not even get me started on billing and canceling of lines - i could probably pull bums off the street in san francisco that are more qualified to deal with customers.

PS. to the person in texas that loves XO - stay away from the peyote man...I have never gotten any email of scheduled outage from XO....hahaha...that was a good one...:)

    *******************************************************************************
    Update:

On Monday 7/23 their service dropped for approximately 1 hour during the middle of the day - this was across all of our DSL lines and not specific to one area of the country.

    ***********************************************************************************
    Update:

On Thursday 7/26 we lost our Rhode Island sites for approximately 1 hour from 12:30 - 1:30 PM PST and all of our sites across the US for about 30 minutes from 2:45 - 3:15 PM PST. Across the US = Utah, California, Arizona, Texas, Rhode Island, Massachuesetts, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Minnesota, and Connecticut. Serbice continues to be extremely poor in Pennsylvania and Texas with other minor outages elsewhere.

XO - I will continue to post messages about how poorly your network performs until I can FINALLY move all my services to a different provider. Also, please get a clue when it comes to customer support. I continually get chastised by your support department that if I am to call in a problem I must be calling from the DSL site...heh...ever hear of a geographically dispersed company???????

    *******************************************************************************************
    Update:

At 10:15 AM PST on 7/27/01 we lost our Southwest locations in Utah, Arizona and Denver and has been down for about 20 minutes so far - we were the first one to report. Traceroute dies after a router in Santa Clara. Will update with the length of the outage when it comes back up. Our UUNet and third tier providers in these areas are still up and running.

The Utah location came back online at 11:05 AM PST but as of 12:00 PM PST all Arizona and Colorado sites are still down.

At 12:20 PM PST on 7/27/01 all our Arizona and Colorado locations came back online. Length of outage approximatly 2 hours.

    ********************************************************************************************
    Update:

At 3:10 on 7/30/01 all our our Arizona sites dropped for approximately 15 minutes. It looks like a router was added or changes as our latency for all 6 sites has jumped about 60-70 ms on average (from 149 to 200+ ms). I almost thought we were going to have a day where I did not have to post...:(

    **********************************************************************************************
    Update:

We lost our Arizona Sites at 2:39 PM PST on 7/31/01 for approximately 5 minutes for what appeared to be a routing change (the latency dropped after that point in time). Then at 3:40 PM PST on 7/31/01 we lost all our Utah, Arizona and Colorado locations which have been down for 15 minutes and counting....Another day...another major outage....

PS. I got my 1st customer support promised call back today! I was so suprrised I almost fell out of my chair.

The lines finally came back up at 7:50 PM PST on 7/31/01. The lines seem to be jumping around quite a bit latency wise (between 80 and 450 ms) but otherwise up and running. We'll see if I don't have to post tomorrow.

Review by: Thomas J. Allen "CEO - Mega Tech Software, Inc."
    From: Staten Island, NY
Contract was $130 per month for 1.44k IDSL

We are the DSL disgruntled' staff of Mega Tech Software, Inc. We provide
web hosting and online services that require high-speed access. Our XO DSL line
speed varies hour by hour; we cannot contact tech support nor can we
contact sales to change service to SDSL. After numerous emails and calls
from Mega Tech technical staff and our CEO, we have neither received the service
they promised nor the upgrade to our service that we have requested.
XO also has the recurring habit of demanding payment for the previous month
even though we have paid the bill in full month-by-month. Our efforts to reach
their billing department to correct this error have yielded only familiarity with
their voicemail system. We have even written 'PLEASE CALL US TO CORRECT THIS!
on the bills that we have sent back to them (with payment included). This company
has displayed poor customer service, inadequate sales and poor service. These are
    wares that we cannot recommend.

Mega Tech Software Give All Thumbs Down....
Not worth the effort even if you are a small business.

    Sincerely,
    Thomas J. Allen / CEO

Though I much prefer DSL to Cablemodem I have gotten tired of the stonewalling and
    runnaround with XO.COM and Covad.
I have had a problem for over a year. Finally after they passed the year and reached an Undocumented 10
tickets ONLY they told me I could just cancel the line.
I was ready to upgrade and all they had to do was show me a little customer service with my problem.
I had 2 ADSL lines. One had a problem and they tested the wrong ciruit and resulted in extreme degrading of
my connection. This was EXACTLY the same day they tested. 2 weeks later they did more testing and my
bandwidth suddenly decreased and they said tough luck you have had a problem for over a year this is the
10th ticket and you can just cancel the account.

Basically they lie and keep you going till the very end.
