I stared my DSL quest back on August 1st, when I moved from an area that had cable modems to an an area that doesn't. So I either had to live with Dial Ups, or go DSL. I decided to go DSL. I spent two weeks going over the data at dslreports.com... I finnaly decided to go with ANET. I tried to call and order, but I was put on hold by a recording... then asked to leave voice mail. I chose not to. I then sent an Email to Anet, requesting what I needed to get DSL service from them. The person replied quickly, and I got the ball rolling on the 26th of August. He stated that it would be about 4 weeks, befor the line would be installed by Amertich. Over the 4 weeks I had several questions which they answered most of them. So far so good... 4 Weeks go by. I am looking for an update. I email the person who signed me up. I get a cryptic reply stating that it was escalated by northpoint on the 15th. Thats it.. nothing more from the reply. I then inquired again.. as if that indicated a problem... I then got a reply with additional explanation on what the escalation ment... Another week goes by, I hear nothing from ANET. So I email again, asking for an update... I get reply that Ameritech is working on it... I am told that Northpoint should have the line by Oct 2nd... I wait until Oct 2nd. Nothing from ANET on problems... I email asking for an update... 2 days later, I get a reply. Ameritch cancelled the install. They had to reorder a new loop. Once again... no indication of an ETA. So I send a strongly worded email with my concerns that I get pices of information that required me to send additional emails to get all the details that should of been in the first one.. 4 days go by, no response from the person I am dealing with.. I send an email to support@anet.com... I get a reply stating they are sorry, and I can request a full update by the end of the week. Turns out the person working on my account went on vacation. I wait 6 days before I send in my next request for an update. I am now replying to the support@anet.com address. As I have not had much luck with my orginal order take. It is now October 19th. 56 days since my order was placed. I have no idea on when I can expect an install, if its in progress, or if anyone is stil answering the other end of the Email at support@anet.com... I wish I didn't have so much time vested in this install... I hate to cancel and start over, another 4 - 6 weeks... But I am about at the end of my rope. Maybe its me, but I don't expect dates that are written in stone, or hourly phone calls on this installation. However I do expect replis to my Email. Is 24 hours to reply to an Email that far featched in todays world? I understand about problmes with getting the line installed and missed installation dates. This is out of Anet's hands.. Ameritech and northpoint are the ones that deal with the line... However Anet's responcibility to me... the customer... they have fell short on. This is the worse part of my ordeal. My only light at the end of the tunnel, is that support may not indicate level of service.. I am hopeing once I get installed... if I get installed.. things will be ok.....

Ameritech CLEC party: NorthPoint
"Fairly smooth install"
"Long wait due to TELCO"
"They got the line up with little hassle"
| Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

I ordered the 416/208 ADSL service and was told to call back in 4 weeks to check on the status. It takes Ameritech this long to configure the line or just cancle the order. The next time I heard from anyone was when NorthPoint called to schedule the inside wiring which was around 4 weeks later. The same day NorthPoint called I received the DSL modem. It was then I discovered I was only getting 208 SDSL. This was fine with me since I was turned down by every other ISP I tried to get DSL from. I am 16000' from my CO which I think is an automatic cancel order for Covad.
The inside wiring went smooth. The tech showed up when scheduled and since I had run a cable from my computer to the phone wiring box all he had to do was make the connections. The modem synced up but I couldn't ping anything. When the NorthPoint tech tried to contact ANet the person at ANet asked if they could call him back. Basically the tech said no and left it with me to work the problem out with ANet. It turned out that NorthPoint configured my line wrong and it took a week to get that cleared up.
Now everything is fine. DSLReports speed test shows 195 down/200 up from the West Coast server. I haven't tried any other testing yet. I have a static IP address and so far a reliable connection.
I seems like there is only one person at ANet that knows about DSL because whenever you mention DSL you get transferred right to him. He does know what he is doing though. Some times you do need to leave a message but they usually get back to you within a half a day. I didn't require any 'hand holding' since I work in the networking business but they were willing to offer it.
The only complaint I would have other than the time delay is the price. It looks like all ISP's charge the same price for 416 or below. Since I am only getting 208 I should be paying less than what a person getting 416 would pay.

"No sense of customer service, period. They don't care about you!"
"My worst experience so far!! 3 months and no DSL service is completely unacceptable"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Value for money:

These guys are the worst!! If you value your time and money, DO NOT ORDER DSL from these guys...take your business elsewhere!!
Before I ordered the service, I did quite a bit of research
on DSL-Reports to find a good ISP who will provide me great
customer service, a good quality DSL hookup, and within the
shortest possible timeframe. Although I had several options
in the area that I live in, I picked ANet considering the fact
that since they are locally based, and smaller, they would respond
better to me, and would provide me with good customer service.
I guess I made a very bad mistake of picking them. Here's what happened.
I place the DSL order around June 15th. ANet takes down all my info
over the phone, and tell me that it takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks for
the complete install.
I dont hear anything back for a month (no calls, emails, nothing!), so
I call ANet around July 15th, and as usual I have to leave a message. When
someone does finally return my call, and I am told that Ameritech could not locate my address because the person at ANet who took down my
address did not put in my apartment number. Hence Ameritech had cancelled my order. WHEN WERE THEY GOING TO TELL ME ABOUT THIS? If I had'nt called they probably would never have. I was very annoyed, but I decided to let it go, and ANet had to put in a new order.
I dont hear anything back for another month (??!!), so I call ANet around
August 19th, and I am told that they are still waiting for Ameritech.
August 31st (2 1/2 months later!), the guy from North point arrives and sets
up the modem, but can only connect from my apt to northpoint...the connectivity from Northpoint to ANet does not exist. He tries calling the phone number that
he has been given, gets nowehere (figures, since no one actually can with these guys!), and finally leaves asking me to contact them directly.
I call ANet same day, and I am told that Northpoint has all the routing info wrong (hmm..., I wonder who goofed up here), and that a problem ticket has been opened, and it takes 72 hrs (3 days) to get it fixed
I WAS STILL WAITING 3 WEEKS LATER FOR MY CONNECTION. I called them several times during those 3 weeks, and people take their own sweet time returing them, and when someone does, they talk like they are doing you a big favor. When asked what the status of the problem ticket is and why it is taking such a
long time, they put on an attitude and tell you they are doing whatever they can and that's it...I have no choice but to just sit tight.
Since I was getting frustrated and annoyed at being treated like this, and getting absolutely no useful info from ANet, I called Northpoint directly at the General number listed on their website. They were very courteous, and understanding, and were totally surprised when I told them that it was 3 months
since I ordered service, and that I did not have a clue why it takes this long, and why after 3weeks after Inside Wiring, I was still not connected. They said they would get to the bottom of it, and I was transferred to Inside Wiring, and then Pre-Installation Support, and finally Post-Installation Support. I was talking to the technician there, and she told me that there was no trouble ticket opened for my order (what now!), and she was going to conference in ANet immediately. She then brought an ANet technician on the line.
Needless to say, I was annoyed that no mention of the problem ticket not existing was made at any time for the last 3 weeks, and I basically demanded to know from the ANet tech why my calls were not being returned, and when the ANet guys were going to figure out that no trouble ticket existed. At that point the technician actually threatened to cut off my service if I called Northpoint directly again. This is insane!! First I wait 3 months and put up with all the screwups all along, and now I get threatened. I told him that I was tranfered to Post-installation support from Northpoint cusotmer service because they were concerned that my case was not being handled properly, and that I dont like to be threatened. The entire conversation should be on Northpoint's recording of the call.
I was annoyed that these guys were now threatening to cut off my service even before I had it. And, did I want to put up with the pathetic customer service for anthoer year, and be at ANet's mercy? No thanks!! I told the tech that I did not like threats, and asked him to cancel the service right then. I then sent a message to the guy that monitors this website from ANet. He was totally unsympathetic to my case, and he had the nerve to tell me that I WAS RUDE to his technician (I see a pattern here based on the other posts on this site).
What nonsense! Do these guys expect me to be the model of patience after the numerous screwups along the way, and after putting up with all the incompetence for 3 months? Of course, I was annoyed, and as the customer paying for the service, I demanded to know what was going on. And on top of it all, I cannot sit quitely while someone threatens to cutoff my service.
The guy who monitors this site from ANet then sent me a message (in reponse to mine) telling me that that the problem with my account was that they had me configured for the wrong type of network. That is an outrightly false statement. The ANet technician himself said on the conference call with the Nothrpoint technician that they had goofed up and placed the trouble ticket on
the wrong order...there was no network type goofup. He also said that I should not call Northpoint directly. Why not? I dont think ANet can prevent me from
calling the general number to Northpoint listed on their website. Also, if Northpoint had wanted they could have told me that I was not supposed to call them directly, and asked me to call my ISP. But they did not, and instead they were going out of the way to help me resolve the situation. Furthermore, it took me exactly 1 hour to figure out what the problem with my account was whereas even after 3 weeks after indisde wiring (let alone the 3 months), I saw no action from ANet. They probably did not even look into my case. When I confronted him with this info, he replied (email) and told me that ANEt did not care about losing me as a customer. This tells you something about the values they have at ANet.
I have since then placed the order with another ISP, and believe it or not, I have received my Inside Wiring date which is exactly 2 weeks after ordering my service. And they have one of the best customer service that I have seen in this business. I was kept informed about progress every 2 days, and they are responsive to my phone calls.
Finally, I have'nt seen any new posts about these guys on this site. That probably means that no one who uses this site orders new DSL service from ANet.

I've been with ANET over a year now, and have had absolutely no problems.
I've got a 204 SDSL with a Netopia router, 6 IP addresses, and it's been perfect from day one.
Order and install went smoothly, with no delays to speak of.
Billing has been consistent - directly to my credit card.

I really feel bad for the ISP's that have to deal with both CV/NP/RH plus the telco. I think ANET really does try to please their customers, and they take the brunt of the frustration that should be directed at Ameritech or Northpoint. Anyway, here's my review of ANET.
I also have Ameritech Speedpath adsl, which isn't a bad service most of the time, but there have been several things wrong with it- which prompted me to look to switch to ANET as soon as Northpoint or Covad serviced my CO. Ameritech SpeedPath is actually ok now, and the users figured out how to hack that lame ATM25 Speedstream card into Win2k. But at the time I ordered it, I was getting 700 pings everywhere because UUNET hadn't supplied enough bandwidth for all their customers. Still, 128k upload is weak for gaming.
So anyway, I ordered ANET after talking to a friend who was quite pleased with their service, and he was happy about his pings in online games. Since I play for one of the top quake3 teams in the world, a good, low pinging, smooth connect is essential to me- with throughput not quite so important. I also elected ANET because they use Northpoint, which in the Chicago area often installs 784/784 sdsl, but you only get charged for 784/392 adsl. And sdsl is the ultimate gaming connect short of a T1.
I called ANET and placed my order. Didn't hear much back for a few weeks, but exactly 4 weeks and 1 day after I ordered it, my dsl modem came, and NP called the same day to ask when I could have it installed. I said "how about today", since I was working from home that day. To my surprise, they accepted and the NP guy showed up around 4 PM. My install was simple because I had 2 ISDN lines that were no longer used- perfect to run the DSL to my box. The guy was older, and not too technical, but acceptable, and quite nice and professional. While he was here, ANET called and warned that he would have trouble and to conference him in- which they did and got it working after about 20 minutes and he left.
I immediately started running tracerts and pings and was delighted, until I noticed something: my ping spiked to over 500 ms every 60-61 seconds. This ALWAYS happened, and of course, it rendered this connect useless for gaming. I called my dsl install support guy, and he said their admins said that the router ran tasks once a minute and that this was acceptable. I, of course, bitched and told them to allow me to talk to their network admin. In a little over a week, they did fix the issue and the connect has been great since. Smooth and solid with good download speeds and GREAT pings. They use pnap and its routing is just fantastic. I ping less than 50 to almost every single quake3 server east of the mississippi river. For gaming, I highy recommend it.
-Mike

All in all I would have to say my experience with getting DSL was hell.I was nearly two months until I was online due to numerous foul ups along the way.
Placed my order early April. Was told it would be 4-6 weeks for the installation to be completed. Four weeks went by and I hadn't heard a thing. So I called to check my status and found out Ameritech had been out to install the line, but I was't home so they couldn't get access. Of course Ameritech never tried to contact me to schedule a time, not to mention they didn't even leave a note to say they tried to come out. Anet put a call into Ameritech, and they came out the same day and installed the line. Another week went by and nothing back from Northpoint on completing the inside wiring. Several calls from Anet to Northpoint ensued, Northpoint failed to ever call back. At this point I was disgusted and called Northpoint directly, turns out the technician from Ameritech never updated the ticket to show outside wiring was complete. Several days of calls to Northpoint, Ameritech and Anet and the ticket was finally updated. Finally we could schedule an inside Wiring date with Northpoint.
This was not the end of my problems though. We set up an appointment for a Wednesday morning between 8-12A. Took the day off so they could come out. 12:00 passes and still no installer. Call Northpoint and they tell me that my appointment was rescheduled for Thursday. Raised hell and they tracked down an installer who came out late that afternoon.
Installer was incompetent. I have no free pairs running from the network box. This was just beyond the installers understanding. He was ready to give up when I explained to him he would need to run a new pair. Went ahead and did this with much groaning. Install was very sloppy, left the network jack hanging from the ceiling by the wire. Didn't even test connection or hook up the DSL router. No configuration information was left. Fortunatley I am a computer technician and was able to complete the install myself.
Now everything is complete and things are working great. Speed is exactly as advertised.
Despite all the problems I can't fault Anet. They did their best to help. It is Ameritech and Northpoint who are incompetent. Nothing to be done about the Ameritech part, I think they just enjoy making it dificult for those who choose to get their DSL from another source. As for Northpoint, Anet admits they are having a lot of problems with them and are currently testing the waters at Covad.

I ordered IDSL service from ANET 3-23-00. It took less than two weeks for Ameritech to install the line, The same day the line was installed northpoint shipped the IDSL modem via overnight. The day after I received the modem, someone called to schedule the Northpoint part of the install - They came out the next day - on a Saturday. The whole process took 2 weeks and two days.
The speed has been fine. I get very consistent performance. Downloads are almost always about 18K per second (Which is what you'd expect from IDSL)
There was not alot of handholding from ANet (although Northpoint sends out a nice letter telling you what to expect). No User Manual, no sheet of paper with the all the settings, nothing (although the IP, subnet mask and Def. Gateway came in the box with the IDSL modem. I got the DNS server IP address from thier website along with the news and mailserver info.
This is a great service for someone who's already comfortable with the internet and computers. I would order it for my own mother, but I'd be sure to help her out the first day and make sure that everything is setup and that she had sufficient protection hackers doing netbios port scans etc...
I would recommend the service to: 1) Anyone who knows what they are doing when it comes to the internet and basic networking.
2) Anyone who likes the price/performance of the service they offer ( It was the best deal for IDSL I found anywhere and I have a static IP!)
Another plus worth mentioning is that they don't charge your credit card for installation or for billing. They send good old fashioned bills through the mail- Which I prefer.
They are also Local (Naperville IL)

I have not yet recieved my DSL service but the install date is set for friday the 3rd, just a couple days from now, so this review is strictly pre-sale info, and customer service. So far I am very disappointed with this ISP, it takes them a very long time to return phone calls, and their phone support people seem to know nothing. I ordered their 1.5megabit SDSL service about a month ago and the only time I have ever heard from them is when I call. Plus they dont expect to get the DSL in on the date they origanialy told me.
Right now this review doesnt mean much, but I will write another, once I get my service.
