I was unsatisfied with the inability of my previous ISP to offer a 1M upload speed at a reasonable, fair price. After looking at EVERYONE I came to Zhonka and couldn't believe their price. Well, now I'm paying less and getting a lot more!

1M upload, Static IP's with pointers for an extra buck ZOWIE ZHONKA.NET!

Despite my dislike for Qwest (my first DSL experience was soiled by them), the guys at Zhonka take the pain away from the process. My service has been extremely steady. Even with internet radio as a daily staple (and a good test of the consistency), I've never had a Zhonka-based problem. 8+ hours a day of streaming audio with nary a glitch !! I've been very happy with it.

To top it off, you're dealing with real people, not some automated system when you call in. No being on hold for 40 minutes (like C*mcast or a direct Qw*st account). The person I have spoken to (Dave?) was exceptionally courteous and professional. When I read the psycho rants of people like "kcwazzu" (previous review), it seems fairly obvious that any jerk that wants everything for almost nothing RIGHT NOW is bound to be disappointed.

Bottom line? Most users are in for a pleasant surprise. Enjoy !!

This is my third DSL ISP (first two were WhidbeyNet, SBC in California), and by far the best, at least in the month that I have had it. After comparing prices for the options in my area (figuring in the price of a modem if it wasn't included, connection fees and so on), I found that this was the lowest. If I remember correctly, about $50 over the course of a year less than Isomedia, which tacks on a $100 modem/installation fee that it is hard to find out about unless you call them up. Also, they provide a lot more information on their website, so you know exactly what you are getting and what your options are.

The only issue I had was the long time I had to wait from order to connection (25 days), although it seems that this was primarily Qwest's fault, and they took $50 off of my bill because of it (even though I hadn't complained). I've had a lot of problems with Qwest, mostly related to phone service and billing though. Once the line was connected, setting everything up was easy, and the installation information Zhonka provided in the initial mail I received was much better than the information that came with the modem purchased from Qwest (unfortunately, I only realized this afterwards).

When I have called Zhonka it has been very easy to get ahold of someone. My connection has only gone out once, and restarting the DSL modem solved the problem right away. This connection has been much faster than my previous connections of the same speed (1.5/1), both download and upload speeds. This is also the best deal there is in the area, so I highly recommend it.

Value for money:

After 5 years with Zhonka and their previous incarnation I sense the end is near(for me anyways). I currently have the Silver Service with 5 static IPs for $24. Since I run 10 PCs and a gaming console I decided to make a change from running a private subnet along with the public IPs provided. So on Weds 4/21/04 I asked to be changed to the Gold Service with up to 13 static IPS for $40. Two days later the response I got was that I could use the Nat/DHCP capabilities of the Actiontec modem. I appreciate Zhonka wants to save me money and provide tech info to the lowest common demoninator. I responded to Zhonka with my justifications for wanting increased IP allocation and that as a technical professional I have an understanding of the options of NAT/DHCP. I also pointed out that with 5 static IP address it would be kind of pointless to do that on the Actiontec modem and that I already do it with a Linksys router downstream.

The response to that was a terse reply that "OK, We'll assign you some additional address space and upgrade your account to Gold DSL. It will not be before Tuesday probably, so please be patient."

So I patiently wait, and wait and by Thursday 4/29 still no action or email from Zhonka. Sent them an email that evening asking if it would be impatient of me to ask where we are on this.

So here I am Sunday afternoon 5/2/04, 11 days after I make the request and still nothing. Sent them another email asking them the following:

"I'm a little perplexed at the lack of action or response from you on this request. I get the impression you are dragging your feet and are incapable or unwilling to provide the service you advertise. I find it hard to believe that provisioning IP address space is such an onerous task that it would take over 10 days to complete the task. I have been a loyal customer of OlyWa and Zhonka for a long time. Now your inaction has me wanting to consider other options. So what's it going to be? Are you going to deliver or shall I start looking elsewhere for quality customer service?"

Anyhow, I'm not holding my breath. My guess is I'll be moving on since it doesn't appear that even longtime customers hold much weight for Zhonka.

So here's the response I get on Monday 5/3/04:

"We are not blowing you off, getting address space from ARIN (the registrar) is a complicated process. We must justify our address use when getting additional IP space, and we currently do not enough unbroken address space in any blocks that would work for your account. The Actiontec modems will not recognize addressees in subnets on from the un-subnetted class "C" address that your space is in, and our servers reside in the only block space we currently have that would meet your requirement, thus making your

account unusable if assigned (DNS, MAIL, etc). We are currently in the

process of getting additional space, as well as changing our internal network addressing to better accomodate a large block assignment, such as yours, over a DSL circuit with Actiontec.

Please be patient, as I will try to get to your request as soon as possible, likely this week."

Apparently last Tuesday now means whenever they get around to it. I guess they advertise something they don't actually have but have to get elsewhere. Hmm, the weather seems to be changing in the Puget Sound. Is it drizzling outside?

    More later? We'll see.

    5/5/04

So i respond to them on 5/3/04:

"A little communication goes a long way. A little common courtesy goes farther. All you had to do was let me know last Tuesday or at least replied to my email Thursday as to the status."

Then lo and behold, at about 12:05am 5/5/04, I lose all internet access. So I call the non existent tech support line and leave a thank you very much message for cutting me off and follow it up with a call to Qwest. Qwest finds nothing wrong on the line. I file a strong complaint against these LAMFOs and wouldn't you know it my access comes back a half hour later.

I'm done with these craniorectaly impared people and I'm moving on as soon as I get up in the morning. Take your money elsewere folks, these people don't have a clue. Its no wonder they sold out Olywa.net. They have no business sense. I got that vibe 5 years ago and ignored it, I won't ignore it now. Ciao Jay and Dave, get a savy business partner if you want to succeed.

I ordered 256/256 at $15/month (not including Qwest, which I can't remember what they charge -- 25 maybe?). I have not been disappointed. I switched from MSN to Zhonka and the transition was fairly smooth.

These guys are great! Not only do they provide Wi-Fi all over town (Olympia), they are also just plain nice folks who get the job done. Forget MSN and Comcast headaches. Go with Zhonka. I had serious problems with Speakeasy (too slow) and MSN (constant firmware updates and DNS server failures). This line is a true 256 up/down, which is not what I've experienced elsewhere.

I encouraged several of my friends to go with Zhonka and they report the same thing: No Problems, great speed. I seriously can not imagine why someone would go with anyone else.

These guys are great! When you call (or e-mail) for tech support, the phone is answered by an owner of the ISP. They're fast, responsive, knowledgable, and friendly.

(I'm signed up for Zhonka's Silver account, with Qwest's DSL/Deluxe service. 1.5Mbs/896kbs, 5 static IPs for $52/month. And the clincher is there's no year-long contract to sign. If you should end up not liking it (but that won't happen), you can switch. I bought a used Cisco 678 DSL modem, and it works great.)

The only down side is that you occasionally have to deal with Qwest. Qwest's sales and tech support is a pain to deal with --- probably not worse than any of the other biggies, but that's not saying much.

Just getting back on the net I ordered dial-up at $15.00 a month.

The home equipment was meager (1995 computer, 95' OS).
There were a few technical problems on my end, and I didn't think I would
    get on the net.

Zhonka patiently worked through it with me getting me on right away!

Then, the email config on this equipment I have was weird and I couldn't get it to work.

Again, the friendly staff at Zhonka came through for me!

The connection for the equipment I have is surprisingly fast and super dependable!

5 static IP's, no metering, ability to run servers (http, mail, ftp, etc...) and solid support make this a no-brainer. If you're in the south Puget Sound, check them out. Getting about 500/244, Cisco 675 in bridged mode has been fine.

Qwest on the other hand is obviously a necessary evil. They forced me to install a new line in order to qualify (primary line was multiplexed w/ two lines into my house), didn't show up twice, didn't bother giving me any explaination why, shipped the wrong equipment the first time, etc... Nothing good to say about them at all.
