I work for a large Corp. and am responsible for locating DSL service in at times, very remote locations. I have found Intercom Online to be very helpful in securing reliable DSL service. My experiences working with Intercom Online, have been extreamly good. They have been very receptive to our many unique situations. I have dealt with them both for sales and technical support, and have been very pleased with their professionalism and customer dedication. I have several other locations in which Intercom Online has provided DSL/ISDN service, and remain equally satisfied with each. If you require reliable DSL service and outstanding sales and support, contact Zeeshan Haider @ Intercom Online. Thank you for your professionalism and dedication.

I have been searching for Cable Internet or DSL providers in our area, and I finally get Intercom hooked, but it's only IDSL with 128K Upload and 128K download, the Broadband sales person gets my order done very fast, his resonse speed is amazing, but I was not explained that the Sales Order I was given was 1 year contract.
The main reason I want to have a DSL is to be able to work at home, but it turned out that it's too slow to use it for my Lotus Notes, the speed I have now is 105K, similar to a dialup service.
Now, I want to cancel my account, but what I was told is I had signed a contract that I would own Intercom around $900.00 if I really want to so.
I wish all the people don't act as fool as I did, be careful when you sign up a DSL, it might cost you too much.

Overall, my experience with Intercom is a nightmare....

    1. Intercom managed to install DSL (IDSL) at my location where many other ISPs refused to provide a service.
    2. Installation was quick and efficient. Communications with sales and technicians were speedy and efficient. Response time was good. There was an initial confusion about specific configuration of the service that I needed (the ISP first missed the point about my needs for static IP addresses), but the omission was corrected in a fast and efficient way. The line was enabled in 11 days since the day of the signed order. In two more days I got everything I needed (including IPs and DNS, complimentary email accounts).
    3. I would like specifically mentioning several names of good people at Intercom who helped and took care of my needs and problems:

    sales: Zeeshan Haider (zeeshan@intercom.com 212 480 4076 x330)
install and support: Ruta, Ayumi, Ilana , George

My thanks to the above people.

    4. It's too early to talk about the reliability of the service - I have it for one week only. So far no problems at all though.

I wish same treatment to all of you,

    Serge

I got my DSL through Intercom Online in Mar 2001. This was the only option that I could find for high speed internet access at the time. The speed is 384 / 384.I have a static IP and a router/DCHP/NAT box. (Lucent DSLPipe). The DSL works most of the time but when it goes down it's usually down for at least 8 hours and sometimes days. I don't know if the problem is with Intercom Online or NAS but I don't really care. For $189 / month I want no problems or very quick resolutions to problems. I get neither.

These guys also advertise 24/7 tech support. Well, their phone number is a long distance number and I've had hold times of greater than 30 minutes. Sometimes I never get anyone. I mentioned this to them when I did finally get through and their response was that tech support was handled through email. I have had outages on Friday nights and sent an email to their tech support and not received a response until Monday. This means that they don't really have 24/7 tech support at all.

Also, when I tried to get help on opening ports on the router that they provided, I got nothing but headaches. I finally just connected to the serial port on the router and configured the ports myself. The router is not very good. I haven't been able to route ports to different IP addresses. I can only do a blanket route of all ports to one IP address. This works fine as long as I use only one server or do more port mapping on the other side of the router. I have the manual for the router only because I was able to convince the guy who installed the DSL to leave the manual behind.

It took me about 3 weeks to get a SMTP server address from them. They did not provide a list of servers to use when I got the service. I have no idea if they have a newsgroup server.

The bottom line is that the DSL is nice and speedy most of the time but there are too many outage problems and poor tech support. It's even worse because I'm paying an outrageous amount of money for this DSL line.

We seem to live in a broadband-free-zone in central Massachusetts (Hudson). No cable internet yet and I was able to find only 2 service providers for DSL service (despite Verizon and Earthlink's bombarding us about their DSL service!!). Even though it appeared that we would be able to pick and choose our DSL service provider (even from the DSLreports pre-qualification results) only 2 would supply us. The other quote I got was for less than $50/month but they had such bad reviews here that I would not touch them. I work from home 100% using my company's VPN and needed a reliable service.

Intercom DSL is not cheap at $149/month for 256K DSL, but my company pays for it and I have been very happy with its reliability. It has ceased to work only once in nearly 3 months, and that was a short outage of a few hours that was announced on their tech support hotline.

The installation went very smoothly between Intercom/Verizon and NAS, with pretty good communication all around. I was up and running within 3 weeks of placing the order. There were a few hiccups during installation but I guess that is normal...and I was fairly well informed so I could tolerate it.

The one problem I have had is that I received next to no documentation about how to get our web site and email running. It took me many emails and phone calls to tech support to get it all working, when this could be so easily documented on a website or email to new customers. The other negative is that the mail server is so slow to connect that we probably will not continue to use it for our personal email.

I have heard so many horror stories about DSL installation that my experience with Intercom has been a pleasant surprise.

Intercom Online was originally chosen for our small business because the price/performance looked good and they had good reviews in DSLreports. We ordered 1.1 Mbps SDSL. The price, with discount for paying a year in advance, was about $275 per month, including installation. Initial installation went well and we had several months of smooth DSL sailing.

After about five months, we had an outage. It took about four days to diagnose and fix (nicked wire in incoming phone closet). Not great but Intercom's support person (who is no longer with Intercom) stayed on top of the problem and was very communicative. A couple of more months of happy DSLing. In the middle of September we suffered another outage. This time support was totally useless. They didn't answer their phone, they did not return Emails. After about a week of pestering, they said they couldn't contact their local (to us) tech people (CAIS). Days, then weeks went by. No DSL - no support - no technician to even look at the problem. I called and Emailed the support group several times a day. Intercom claimed that it was a routing problem at CAIS - how long does it take to fix a routing problem? As far as I know, the service is still out. After three weeks of unresponsiveness from Intercom, we ordered DSL from PacBell (that should prove how bad Intercom is); 14 days later, the new DSL was up and running with no problems. We can't cancel Intercom because we paid a year in advance. Never again.

One of the most obvious problems with Intercom is that they do business nationally but do not have a national-sized company. They rely on subcontractors to perfom local work outside of their NYC locality and they do not seem to have the best support relationship with their bay area contractor. Intercom might be okay in some areas but if you are in Silicon Valley, I definitely do not recommend them.

This is an update to my original post (original included below).

It's been 7 months since we've had Intercom Online installed, and we've been pretty trouble-free; we're extremely pleased with the level of service that IO provides. A word of explanation about the scores that I gave:

    - install coordination got a 4 because we had a surly Covad installer (not IO's fault, though!) -- see my original post below for details on that
    - connection reliability gets a 4 because our modem periodically locks up and requires a power cycle to reset. This is not IO's fault, technically speaking, but it is part of the overall package
    - mail/dns/news gets a 4 because it takes about 30-60 seconds to connect to our mail server
    - everything else gets a 5 because tech support and the value for the $$$ is great. These guys are literally blocks from the WTC, yet we only saw minor outages several days after Sept 11th for things like having fuel for their generators was held up at National Guard checkpoints. See my note about this (»Amazing -- they're blocks from the WTC), and the amazing service that they've provided, even in the wake of Sept 11.

Their tech support is pretty responsive, and I have nothing but great things to say about the overall service. I highly recommed Intercom Online, especially since they somehow manage to provide that warm-n-fuzzy "small company service" feeling. This is extremely important to me because DSL providers are a dime a dozen these days - finding one that is interested in its relationship with its customers is rare.

These guys provide service, not just a pipe to the internet.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    Original post

We got a great deal with 3 months free (which is why the monthly cost is so low) when we paid for 12 months. Zeeshan Haider was very helpful in pre-sales information; he answered all of our questions quite thoroughly (or got answers for us when he didn't have them).

Tech support can be a little hard to get a hold of on the phone (got voice mail several times), but when you get a hold of them, they're great. E-mail contact to tech support has been great as well. Covad gave us a router with an older BIOS version, and didn't pre-configure it, so the Intercomm Online tech support guys spent 2-3 hours remotely configuring it and flashing a new BIOS on (i.e., I did nothing -- they would call me back every 30 mins or so and ask me to test if we were up, but they did all the work), then end of which resulted in all of our machines being up and talking on the internet.

So it's only been sales and initial installation so far, and aside from the guy from Covad who came to do the installation, we've been pretty happy so far.

I may have slightly higher expectations, though, because I'm a geek with a heavy networking background, and I know exactly what I want (technical terms and all).

All in all, Intercomm has been good to us so far. I recomend them.

My company was using Qwest communication before we found Intercom Online as our
ISP provider. We are a small internet investment business service. We need a reliable
internet connection service. But Qwest communication can't provide this kind of service
for us. Thanks for DSLreports.com let us found the Intercom Online. They are very
professinal from marketing sales and line installation to tech support. Also they had very good price comparing all other ISP. Also Thanks for Verizon provide the line installation and Covad provide internet network backbone service. I just want to thank all people helping us go online today.

Getting started was horrendous. This setup was in Downtown Brooklyn. At first Verizon gave problems to install the line. Multiple visits and excuses. But even after that, we had tremendous problems with NAS. Communication between NAS and Intercom was not good but what made it even worst was that Intercom would not relate back to me any information. I had to go hunting them down to get the latest updates on service or lack thereof. There was a lot of miscommunications internally for them and no one was up to date with my status. Finally I got one person, a technician, to help me out thoroughly and he got me up and running. Since then service has run pretty good. The reliability of service is pretty good and I cant complain about that.

I actually attempted to setup additional locations, setup again was disasterous so I had to cancel.
