I ordered a 256K SDSL line from Gil Lahav at Intercom Online. He showed a
high level of professionalism in answering my questions (in French!),
presenting the various options to me, and staying on top of installation
issues. Initially there were appointment problems with Verizon and then some
wiring issues, but Intercom -- especially Ruta Petrakovaite -- was very
proactive in following up with me and the DSL carrier (NAS) to make sure
that I was getting properly connected. I'm getting a great value for the
money I'm paying, and I wholeheartedly recommend Intercom's services.

I ordered DSL throught intercom after finding their AUP the most acceptable of the less expensive NAS partners. NAS is the only remaning DSL CLEC in my town now that vitts and HarvardNet are gone. I was hesitent to pay this much for service, and I was even more hesitent to pay for the first month and instalation before I saw a working line, but I finally went through with it when I ran out of other options.

I placed the order for a 256k SDSL line on May 24th. Verizon came on June 12th, and NAS came to do the setup and testing June 18th. When the NAS tech opened the wiring box on the outside of the building I noticed that there was a HarvardNet tag with my name on it in there. I had placed an order with them and they went out of business before the provisioning date, but apparently Verizon installed the line anyway. (I find this especially interesting since Verizon DSL tells me that I can only get copper/fiber hybrid lines to my house, and that I can't ever get DSL!)

Anyway, the Verizon portion of the install was painless, and I didn't even have to be there. The NAS installer took a while to find a clean line between the wiring closet downstairs and my apartment on the third floor. After he found the line, he ran a piece of CAT5 from an existing wall jack (Out from under the plate. I'll be replacing the whole thing with a two line wall jack when I get a chance, because what he did looks like crap.) to a surface mount jack he glued next to my desk. He then spent an hour on hold with his office trying to figure out why it wouldn't sync up. In the end it turned out that his install sheet said 128k, so he was configuring the bridge for the wrong speed. When he got through, he changed the setting, and everything worked.

It's too soon to tell if there are any stability problems, but you can be sure that I'll be back here complaining if their are. Interesting to note that neither NAS nor Intercom had anything bad to say about Verizon, and Verizon seemed very helpful (Didn't require me to be there and such). This is very different from my many dealings with Covad, who complained about Verizon from the first minutes and told me to expect problems even before there were any.

I switched from dynamic to static IPs shortly (within hours) after the install, and support at intercom responded to 3 e-mails in 45 minutes. Very responsive!

Their news server seems a little slow, but I was told that they didn't have one when I ordered, so it being there at all is a perk.

    Overview:

Speed: 256k SDSL (but I've gotten 43.5kB/sec downloads which seems more 384k ish)

Equipment: Lucent Pipeline w/4 port hub and NAT built in.

    4 Static IPs

No PPPOE! (I like that. one less thing to go down)

$149 a month is expensive, but you get what you pay for it seems.

We ordered DSL for 5 offices to act as a failover for our Frame Relay. I ordered them all at the end of Oct. Nothing happened for months! Mainly because Covad stopped doing installs at the end of the year and didn't start again until, what, the middle of January, I think.

Of course the bozos from the Telco couldn't get their end of the install right. In one case they actually knocked out our POTS for one office! Getting Qwest and Covad on the same page (Ameritech in one case) was very difficult.

In their defense I will say that Intercom did all they could to make things right. Now that everything is up and running it's been terrific. Our Frame was bouncing for about 30 days in one office and the rollover worked as desired.

How's this for a successful Business DSL timeline? Placed my order on April 27th (a Friday); tested by local telco, wire installed & operational on May 15th .... check your calendar....that's 13 working days which includes the day the order was placed.

Signed 2 year term for $136/month for a BUSINESS 256K line.

Wanna talk about service? How about Zeeshan. Instrumental and always available....truly a professional in every manner. Thanks also have to go out to the entire installations dept, namely Tony who painstakingly walked me through setting up our Novell LAN on the line.

Did someone ask about performance? Let's see.....after configuring a workstation which was upgraded from WIN95 to WIN98 3 months ago, I decided I'd take the opportunity to upload all of the necessities from WindowsUpdate's site. I started with IE 5.5. The download size is 28.5 Meg. I did a double-take when it was completed just 17 short minutes later.

In summary, all appendages (thumbs included) are way up for Intercom Online. Check them out at www.intercom.com or www.mydsl.com.

If you have an extremely remote location, or if your location is fairly new, most likely the local telco thought they were doing someone a favor by running fibre-optic for the entire area. The downside for someone looking for a low-cost, high-speed net connection is that there is no copper wire from the CO (central office) to the location. Intercom has a solution which is a terrific deal....satellite! No, it's not what you're thinking. Not the same satellites used by DishNetwork or DirectTV. The same satellites used by the CIA and the Pentagon. THOSE satellites must remain stable, and if your net connection is part of that same apparatus, well, draw your own conclusion.

WOW...22 Days from the time I sent in my paperwork until I was live. I spoke to Andy in sales several times before placing my order. He was always accessible and called me back quickly when I left voicemail. My theory is that if they don't call you back when they are trying to sell you something, are they going to call you when you need help?

I work in the Business Development department at an Internet Company. We had the need to open up a second small office at a new location. I was very apprehensive because I was going to be working on dial-up until the DSL line was installed (which Intercom provided to me the day I signed the contract). I transfer a ton of large files and needed the connection to be reliable. I have yet to have a problem aside from configuring my computer which the tech support walked me through even though it wasn't really part of their responsibility.

With so many people complaining about their ISP's (including me, my last one was a nightmare) Intercom seems to be a needle in the haystack. I found service that was a little cheaper elsewhere, but then I looked at their reviews. Not worth saving a few bucks only to have to scramble for a new ISP next month.

I cannot say enough good things about Intercom Online. From the get-go it was an experience that was better than I thought DSL could be.

I don't know if I just got lucky or if the DSL installation process is really getting better. I've seen the negative reviews here and couldn't disagree with them more, as my experience was purely positive. I ordered my line 19 days before I was up and running. The salesperson that I spoke to assured me that their installations typically took between 4-5 weeks but that currently they were really getting installed really quickly...well what do you know, a salesperson who told the truth. I did have a minor problem with my personal network that was due to an IP address problem, but the technical support department quickly helped me to identify it (it was our fault) and solve it almost immediately. This was a problem on my network, not theirs and they still helped me, FREE OF CHARGE. This not only saved me money, but the time and hassle of getting my network person to come out and troubleshoot/resolve the problem. I would recommend this ISP to everyone. They have been nothing but honest, reliable and most importantly ACCESSABLE from the start. Intercom definitely gets my stamp of approval.

Talked to a Sales rep for about 3 weeks, and was ready to order, then no more communication. Two weeks later, I get an email from him stating he was sick, and away for a while. I tell him to email the contracts. He does, but I have a question as the install price went up. Two days later, I get no response. Then get an email from another Sales Rep, stating the original one is "no longer with the company" and I'm to deal through him now. Fine, but he won't give me the lower rates either, so I got screwed right off the get-go for another couple hundred $$$.

    IDSL 144/144 with $643 installation, $119/month x 12 month contract, $400 cancellation fee within first 30 days.

    Ordered Feb 26

Eleven days after faxing contract, and receiving no contact from ISP, I called, and was told BS would be here on on Mar 16. Made arrangements to miss work. Wednesday afternoon, ISP & Covad call, stating that Covad is the ones who will be here that Friday, not BS. and I need to find place where router is to be located beside power outlet & phone jack. Well, we've got a problem. Only phone jacks in this house are in master bedroom and in the kitchen on the wall.

Called up Covad, the lady on phone said they might do the wiring, if not, I'd have to hire professional to do it. Called up ISP, they said to call them when Covad arrived.

Covad arrived early Friday morning, and I appraised him of the situation. He calls up another tech, to see if he'll run the line. Sure, no problem, but give him a couple of hours, he's in the next town. Meanwhile, he starts setting up the router w/ his lappy.

Router setup is complete, just need a new line drop to phone box outside. Covad states he's gonna leave, and should be back with other tech sometime that day.

Calls me up, and states he'll be here in about an hour & half. They show up, and I inform them I've got a cat5 line running under my house from BR1 to BR2 that they can pull out & use if they need to, so as to not need to drill another hole. Sure, would be great (no longer another pc in the other room, so benefits me also). They then decide to splice into the existing extra copper line running under the house, instead of drilling another outside hole and using the wire posts left for them by BS.

I have no complaints at that time. However, it seems that by doing so, I may have lost some connectivity/speeds for them splicing into that wire, instead of making a new one. I've got a small issue with latency from the first hop after router, but two techs are doing a superb job trying to fix that route for me.

Will find out soon enough, hopefully.

I received a Netopia 3100-I/T router, and 5 static IP's for my SOHO use.

This was a tough install due to our location. This however was highly complicated by Verizon being the idiots that they are and continualy insisting on trying to run us out of the wrong CO which to no surprise was too far away. I was very happy in the work that intercom did and their efforts to help in a chaotic time that was the demise of Harvardnet DSL. I would gladly recommend them to anyone who asked.
