I'm a HarvardNet customer, and as we all know, Harvard Net is getting a nice, cool room next to the Titanic...its going down and dying. So, I've been searching around for a new ISP.

I've read a few nice things here about Intercom and thought I would try them for info, prices and rates. To date, I'm still waiting. And I feel this level of unprofessionalism is worthy of note to fellow DSL Seekers. No, I'm not being anal or out to smear anyone but simply tell you guys the truth.

I called Monday, spoke to a nice gent and waited for his email quote, since they just do not have the technology to tell me on the phone what things will cost. After sending me garbage attachments all day Monday, I asked to have the quote faxed to me. I had to email the [colorful metaphor] sales person my number twice, and still no fax. Then, super sales person informs me he deleted all the info I gave him the day before.

Folks, this is just academically stupid and insulting. I've never put this level of effort and time to find out prices. I told the salesguy a little while ago that look, Harvard Net dies Jan 15th 2001...I need a new ISP as soon as possible. If he can't beam me a quote or tell me the rates in email, I have to look elsewhere. He pleaded with me to give him another chance...well duh! I've been giving him chances all day! So, I'm happy to have this agonizing moment with Intercom over and done.

Now I'm sure some of you have had great luck with Intercom...and I envy you! But my first impression is that of incompetence exceeded only by a Three Stooges Marathon evening.

    Paul

Set up in 14 days, all went well until a week ago my DSL went down due to a dispute between 2 internet giants. Apparently our connection with Intercom was caught in the crossfire of this dispute.

However, this problem appears to be beyond Intercom's control. It seems that they are doing everything possible to ameliorate the situation quickly and get us back up and running here. So far they have been very fair by extending our time of service, and providing us with a way to connect in the meantime.

Before this unforeseen problem everything was running fine.

Intercom has a ton of very high ratings here and I am rather astounded, perhaps I am not the norm but here is my experience to date.

For background information this is my 13th Covad DSL install that I have ordered from various ISP's (for myself, my business, and various family members and friends whom I ordered and coordinated to get them the best service.) All of these installs went very smoothly, yes they took a lot of phone calls on my part to make it happen but with enough badgering Ameritech always deliverd ontime. Here is my experience with Intercom :

Their salesperson sells me on their great support and communication saying they are the best, of course I expect no less from a sales person. This line is to be a 2nd (backup) dsl connection for my business and with my knowledge of dsl i'm not to worried about the support anyway so after reading all the great reviews here I place my order expecting a smooth install. I couldn't have been more wrong.

For starters you get no status page with them like you do SE or DslI or other big name ISP's so no way to check how your order is progressing. Secondly I mailed them several times (my sales person as well as their SD department) about the status and kept getting "Ameritech is difficult, we expect to have a date for you in roughly 1 - 2 more weeks" (i got this same responce for 3 weeks). And of course Ameritech shows up the same day i get one of these messages meaning I have to drop my work load to go show an Ameritech rep the Dmarc when I could have planned it properly had my ISP had any idea how to communicate. (BTW they send me another letter a week letter saying they were still trying to get ameritech to come out !! this AFTER the line was already installed !!). So after yelling about them about their poor communication they apologize and setup the Covad portion which they promise will go much better. Guess what ? No call no show from Covad (not covad's fault) was a scheduling problem on the part of Intercom (which took them 3 days to figure out what went wrong).

Are there worse ISP's out there ? You bet there is, does this company deserve even a semblance of the top ISP rating they are earning ? Not a chance, be forewarnded this is NOT the ISP for business's that it is touted to be !!

They told me that it may take four to eight weeks to install, but it took about three. My Friends with PAC Bell have taken between two to three months.

The tech guys were helpful in setting up our computers.

The price is amazing. They have a prepay option that takes the price down significantly.

I am receiving ADSL at 1.5M/384, with 3 static IPs. The ordering and installation processes, handled by Zheeshan Haider and Elena Wolf, were remarkably quick. The staff were easy to contact either by phone or email, and returned almost all messages within a few minutes. I am extremely happy with the service, and recommend Intercom highly.

I ordered 1.5/384k aDSL. It got installed pretty fast (under 4 weeks). I kept hearing that DSL installs were a nightmare, but I didn't find that at all. In addition, their customer and tech support were always available to answer my questions. The service is fast, and I am pretty happy!

I ordered a 1.1M SDSL for $359/month The ordering process was very easy,
had a few problems with Bell Altantic installing the line properly in the
central office, but the rest of the process was a breeze. I was provided
with a Netopia router which has a built-in ethernet hub. Intercoms tech
support has impressed me with their knowledge of networking multiple
platforms. They were also willing and able to route static IP addresses
that I already own. Overall a great experience, I will definately renew
    my contract!

CLEC party: Covad
"Almost entirely hands-free installation"
"None, really"
"Painless installation, good service"

Tech Support:

I ordered ADSL (1.5 Mbps down, 384k up) from Intercom Online earlier this year. Having heard horror stories about DSL installations I was fully prepared for it to be a painful, slow process, but surprisingly enough there were almost no hitches. The entire process took a month, from the time I filled out my order to the time I could sit down and pull data down from the Internet 25 times faster than I had been doing with my modem.

Intercom's representative stayed on top of things throughout the installation period, giving me frequent updates via telephone and via e-mail, and often checking up to make sure that Covad and Bell Atlantic had showed up when promised. This meant there was almost no effort required on my part other than being home when techs needed access. I only had to take three days off from work, although one was wasted because Bell Atlantic neglected to tell me (or Intercom) that a tech would be arriving (and as soon as I mentioned this to the Intercom rep she apologized for the inconvenience and set up a new appointment for the following week).

I now have a Speedstream 5260 DSL router delivering data to my desktop (static IP). I've had no service availability problems at all, and transfer speeds have been nice and zippy. Overall I'm very pleased.
