Beware of Intrcom online! To a customer of Intercom Online; Dear Sir or Madam; I am witting that letter to you so you can be warned with my experience with Intercom Online. Couple of years ago of had to establish connection from my small business to the Internet. I looked for ISP provider. So happed that my previous ISP INYC sold business to Intercom Online. I was very happy with INYC so naturally I expected same level of service. I was very mistaken. They provided a contract where I had to pay over $5000 a year for 380kbps connection. That is over 4 times more then anywhere else. Trusting my previous vendor, I did sign the contract. Contract stated that I should pay a year in advance. After the couple of weeks, line was delivered, and hell started. T1 was going down almost every month. My customers were telling me to fix the roof every time when rained connection was out. When contract was about over I let them know that I am canceling the service. Then without my permission, they took money from my account, which I did not notice in time. I call that theft. Do I have proof of every word I say? Yes, just call me 848-565-1712. Please call me anytime you want. Regards, Jacek

I joined iNYC three years ago when my company requested that we retire our ISDN lines for something less expensive. At this time, the only available DSL provider in our area with a reasonable cost was iNYC with $99/month for 256K SDSL. Staff at iNYC were very competent and professional and I have nothing but high regard for this company. I had no problems signing a 2 year contract with iNYC. In addition, I paid $300 to relocate this line to my new house in December of 2001.
However, just over year ago, Intercom Online has purchased iNYC. I find the service horrendous and their prices outrageous. We would have intermittent outages without any prior warnings. Our billing was changed so that we are charge a month in advanced. Additional fees were stacked on the bill bringing the cost up to about $110 a month. Customer service is very difficult to work with and their is very little communication from the company to their customers. Except for a notice that we were being charged a month earlier for our service, we hadn't received a correspondence from Intercom Online since July of 2003 and this was a post maintenance notice.
My company has lowered their reimbursement rate for DSL to just $30/month. We were forced to switch providers and have decided to go with Verizon. Our speed is 3x as fast and we pay only $34/month.
As a result, I contacted Intercom Online to request cancellation of my account. What a nightmare. We had met our 2 year agreement and then some. It will actually be 3 years tomorrow. According to their sales staff who intercepted my cancellation request after a phone call and email, I was a long standing stellar customer who they did not want to lose. They really cannot match Verizon's price/speed so it was no question, we needed to terminate our service. We followed all their rules, faxed in our request to cancel and returned our DSL Pipe all at the start of June. As I expected they continued billing my credit card for services I was not receiving and now the kicker they sent us a bill for $500 saying we broke our service agreement! Can you believe it? One day we are stellar customers, the next they want more money and for what, for being good customers and sticking with them for so long paying their outrageous prices.
Apparently, unbeknownst to us, they automatically renewed our service in December 2003, 2 and a half years after our service had started , for another 2 years and now that want us to pay.
I'm really disappointed. What started out as a good relationship would end in such a way.
Disgruntled Massachusetts customer.
Go Sox!

I have been searching for Cable Internet or DSL providers in our area, and I finally get Intercom hooked, but it's only IDSL with 128K Upload and 128K download, the Broadband sales person gets my order done very fast, his resonse speed is amazing, but I was not explained that the Sales Order I was given was 1 year contract. The main reason I want to have a DSL is to be able to work at home, but it turned out that it's too slow to use it for my Lotus Notes, the speed I have now is 105K, similar to a dialup service. Now, I want to cancel my account, but what I was told is I had signed a contract that I would own Intercom around $900.00 if I really want to so. I wish all the people don't act as fool as I did, be careful when you sign up a DSL, it might cost you too much. Overall, my experience with Intercom is a nightmare....

I got my DSL through Intercom Online in Mar 2001. This was the only option that I could find for high speed internet access at the time. The speed is 384 / 384.I have a static IP and a router/DCHP/NAT box. (Lucent DSLPipe). The DSL works most of the time but when it goes down it's usually down for at least 8 hours and sometimes days. I don't know if the problem is with Intercom Online or NAS but I don't really care. For $189 / month I want no problems or very quick resolutions to problems. I get neither.
These guys also advertise 24/7 tech support. Well, their phone number is a long distance number and I've had hold times of greater than 30 minutes. Sometimes I never get anyone. I mentioned this to them when I did finally get through and their response was that tech support was handled through email. I have had outages on Friday nights and sent an email to their tech support and not received a response until Monday. This means that they don't really have 24/7 tech support at all.
Also, when I tried to get help on opening ports on the router that they provided, I got nothing but headaches. I finally just connected to the serial port on the router and configured the ports myself. The router is not very good. I haven't been able to route ports to different IP addresses. I can only do a blanket route of all ports to one IP address. This works fine as long as I use only one server or do more port mapping on the other side of the router. I have the manual for the router only because I was able to convince the guy who installed the DSL to leave the manual behind.
It took me about 3 weeks to get a SMTP server address from them. They did not provide a list of servers to use when I got the service. I have no idea if they have a newsgroup server.
The bottom line is that the DSL is nice and speedy most of the time but there are too many outage problems and poor tech support. It's even worse because I'm paying an outrageous amount of money for this DSL line.

Intercom Online was originally chosen for our small business because the price/performance looked good and they had good reviews in DSLreports. We ordered 1.1 Mbps SDSL. The price, with discount for paying a year in advance, was about $275 per month, including installation. Initial installation went well and we had several months of smooth DSL sailing.
After about five months, we had an outage. It took about four days to diagnose and fix (nicked wire in incoming phone closet). Not great but Intercom's support person (who is no longer with Intercom) stayed on top of the problem and was very communicative. A couple of more months of happy DSLing. In the middle of September we suffered another outage. This time support was totally useless. They didn't answer their phone, they did not return Emails. After about a week of pestering, they said they couldn't contact their local (to us) tech people (CAIS). Days, then weeks went by. No DSL - no support - no technician to even look at the problem. I called and Emailed the support group several times a day. Intercom claimed that it was a routing problem at CAIS - how long does it take to fix a routing problem? As far as I know, the service is still out. After three weeks of unresponsiveness from Intercom, we ordered DSL from PacBell (that should prove how bad Intercom is); 14 days later, the new DSL was up and running with no problems. We can't cancel Intercom because we paid a year in advance. Never again.
One of the most obvious problems with Intercom is that they do business nationally but do not have a national-sized company. They rely on subcontractors to perfom local work outside of their NYC locality and they do not seem to have the best support relationship with their bay area contractor. Intercom might be okay in some areas but if you are in Silicon Valley, I definitely do not recommend them.

STAY AWAY from this ISP!!!
The initial service was great, however, I say stay away from this ISP. Intercom states, "...every client receives individualized attention from specialists trained to provide efficient, valuable, and responsive support." (See the claim at: »www.mydsl.com/customer/index.html) This simply is NOT TRUE.
I paid for a full year in advance and only had service for one month before one of the businesses they were partnering with went bankrupt (Zian). There was no notice that service would be interrupted. I called multiple times (at least two times a week) and NO one returned the call. No one seemed to know why I did not have service, nor how long it would be before service was restored.
There seemed to be no communication between departments. Technical support stated they could not get me reconnected. Sales sent me a form to restore service in e-mail with a deadline of that day to get service restored. I asked technical support if this was true, the answer was NO. Sales called the house later wanting to know if I wanted to sign another contract not even checking to see if service could be provided. Mass confusion at this ISP. Where is the "individualized attention" let alone the "Specialists?"
The real kicker is Intercom said they would refund my money. Two months after service was disconnected it is still not refunded. Two weeks ago it would be refunded the end of the week. Today, 01/30/2001, they said the end of this week. I do not understand, they do not give individualized attention and they do not keep their promises!!!
How can this company continue to claim to offer good service? Why are they still in business? Good service is not just spoken, it is delivered to the customer.
Glad I signed up with Road Runner. Same day installation, no paying for a year in advance, and truly efficient staff!!!

Before getting the 1.5Mbps up/down SDSL line from Intercom, I had a 7.1Mbps ADSL from Verizon. The pre-installation sales team was very friendly, and Verizon came within 30 days of placing my order. When Verizon came, they informed me that my phone box was full, and instead of installing another line, they took out my existing 2nd phone line AND My ADSL line to install this new SDSL line. There goes my internet access until Intercom can get a NAS person over here to configure everything. Well, he came a week later and extended the line and gave me my router, and at this point, NAS ordered my IP addresses. They informed me that it would take 2-3 weeks to get the IP's. Needless to say, I was not very happy with this due to the fact that I did not have my ADSL line to fall back on. The IP's came within a week and a half, however, they only assigned me 1 instead of the 8 I had ordered. I called Intercom, and they said I would get additional IP's by friday (this way tuesday, about 40-45 days after ordering my line). I called on friday, and Intercom said they would call me back a little later with my info. I then called NAS to try to get my IP's. Instead of 8, they assigned me 13, which is not such a bad thing. It was at this point the real nightmare started.
Approximately 15-20 times a day, the 'WAN' light on my router starts flashing due to a signal failure. And this goes on for about 5 minutes. Sometimes I cannot access the internet for longer periods. I have opened a trouble ticket with Intercom, and they have not gotten back to me ONCE with any information regarding this problem. I called NAS MULTIPLE times and they said they reset my hard twice and bouned my signal to try to alleviate the problem, however, this did not help at all. I really do not think I should be paying $457 a month for a line that is 0% reliable. I host several webpages on this line and I cannot have it go down so many times in one day. It might not be so bad if only I could get some kind of support from Intercom, or NAS could fix my problem.
At the end of the story, I would have to say if my line is still unreliable after a week, I will have to take my business elsewhere. If you want a reliable internet connection, stay away from Intercom and NAS!

I'm a HarvardNet customer, and as we all know, Harvard Net is getting a nice, cool room next to the Titanic...its going down and dying. So, I've been searching around for a new ISP.
I've read a few nice things here about Intercom and thought I would try them for info, prices and rates. To date, I'm still waiting. And I feel this level of unprofessionalism is worthy of note to fellow DSL Seekers. No, I'm not being anal or out to smear anyone but simply tell you guys the truth.
I called Monday, spoke to a nice gent and waited for his email quote, since they just do not have the technology to tell me on the phone what things will cost. After sending me garbage attachments all day Monday, I asked to have the quote faxed to me. I had to email the [colorful metaphor] sales person my number twice, and still no fax. Then, super sales person informs me he deleted all the info I gave him the day before.
Folks, this is just academically stupid and insulting. I've never put this level of effort and time to find out prices. I told the salesguy a little while ago that look, Harvard Net dies Jan 15th 2001...I need a new ISP as soon as possible. If he can't beam me a quote or tell me the rates in email, I have to look elsewhere. He pleaded with me to give him another chance...well duh! I've been giving him chances all day! So, I'm happy to have this agonizing moment with Intercom over and done.
Now I'm sure some of you have had great luck with Intercom...and I envy you! But my first impression is that of incompetence exceeded only by a Three Stooges Marathon evening.
Paul

Intercom has a ton of very high ratings here and I am rather astounded, perhaps I am not the norm but here is my experience to date.
For background information this is my 13th Covad DSL install that I have ordered from various ISP's (for myself, my business, and various family members and friends whom I ordered and coordinated to get them the best service.) All of these installs went very smoothly, yes they took a lot of phone calls on my part to make it happen but with enough badgering Ameritech always deliverd ontime. Here is my experience with Intercom :
Their salesperson sells me on their great support and communication saying they are the best, of course I expect no less from a sales person. This line is to be a 2nd (backup) dsl connection for my business and with my knowledge of dsl i'm not to worried about the support anyway so after reading all the great reviews here I place my order expecting a smooth install. I couldn't have been more wrong.
For starters you get no status page with them like you do SE or DslI or other big name ISP's so no way to check how your order is progressing. Secondly I mailed them several times (my sales person as well as their SD department) about the status and kept getting "Ameritech is difficult, we expect to have a date for you in roughly 1 - 2 more weeks" (i got this same responce for 3 weeks). And of course Ameritech shows up the same day i get one of these messages meaning I have to drop my work load to go show an Ameritech rep the Dmarc when I could have planned it properly had my ISP had any idea how to communicate. (BTW they send me another letter a week letter saying they were still trying to get ameritech to come out !! this AFTER the line was already installed !!). So after yelling about them about their poor communication they apologize and setup the Covad portion which they promise will go much better. Guess what ? No call no show from Covad (not covad's fault) was a scheduling problem on the part of Intercom (which took them 3 days to figure out what went wrong).
Are there worse ISP's out there ? You bet there is, does this company deserve even a semblance of the top ISP rating they are earning ? Not a chance, be forewarnded this is NOT the ISP for business's that it is touted to be !!
