91913 ADSL 928/384 Safe Mode DUMPED over 3000/256 Cox HSI

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------

Wasn't happy with Safe Mode on the ADSL line so I dumped it after my contract ended. Although I haven't posted a review for my Speakeasy 384 SDSL service, it has been very excelent in terms of ping and stability but lacks in the download speed. 2004 is a year for me to start cutting over priced expenses, and so Megapaths ADSL has been dumped over the more favorable Cox HSI. I still have the Speakeasy 384 SDSL service only because I'm still within the contract, which will be ending in 03/2004. Unfortunately I will be ending this service as well when that time comes.

91913 ADSL 928/384 Safe Mode Review

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Well after have been with them for quite some time now, service isn't what it used to be since some infrastructure changes (Changing backbone providers). Routing could be better. My over all latency to servers I USED to get 40ms ping on are now twice as much and sometimes more. I used to be able to get 1300kbps down but now I'm stuck in this stupid safe mode which puts too much over head in the transfer of packets. I'm capped at 928kbps down, and NOT even using HALF of the total bandwidth does latency increase to 100ms-200ms because of this stupid safe mode. So when others in the household are browsing the web, my latency shoots up when playing online games at the same time.

    91913 ADSL 1536/384 Install Review

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Having had to move, I had to give up the SOHO Mega 1 SDSL package which was the excellent service I had by far. Decided to get the ADSL package with Covad on shared line with PacBell. It has been nothing but a pain in the @$$ to get this ADSL line stable synced up at full speeds. Unfortunatly I am on the borderline of attaining a good ADSL line. It disappoints me because I took steps out of my way just to get this ADSL line.

So currently I'm in "Safe Mode" synced at less for what I am paying for. Safe Mode does make the line stable but does degrade the quality. Pings to gateway does increase and download speed is drecreased. Currently I am synced at 928kbps/384kbps but download test results show 780kbps/303kps. Since I'm paying for more than what I am getting and Megapath DOES NOT have different pricing for different speedson ADSL, I may do an ISP switch for that who does.

I've been using the Mail server to host my domain and thats been great, DNS is great , been using that for Reverse DNS, and News is subpar since the maximum throughput that the outsourced news group provider allow is about 400kbps.

Tech support is very helpful but unfortunately this time with this problem, there really wasn't a good solution other than either stay in Safe Mode or try ordering a another phone line to have the ADSL on a different Pair.

    *******************UPDATE************************

Well having done some changes to my IW, basically just switched the copper pairs I was using from the SAME Cat5 cable, and making a router config change, those two seemed to have fixed my connection problem. I have seen a stable connection for 3 days without a hitch. it used to be within every 24 hours it would resync. I am guessing it is more on the router change config than it was on the IW change. I set the rate adaptive counter-measure feature off in the Prestige 643 router using

    wan adsl rateadap off

in the ZyNOS command line. I'm guessing that the reason why the router has been resyncing is because when the SNR is falling bellow its required minimum the router would try to resync until it reached a SNR that was with in its valid range for this rate adaptive mode.. So turning this off actually seemed to make the resync stop.

I'm giving a 5 for all except Tech Support since I happened to figure this on my own. Other than that I'm a happy camper with my ADSL.

    94070 SDSL 1000/1000 Install Review:

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Ok so I was one of the victims of the Northpoint demise. Only 1.5 months prior to my lease ending at my apartment. I contemplated whether or not to reinstall my iDSL line since I did have thoughts of moving out to find another place to live which is closer to the CO, which Indeed I did. I moved in with a friend at his house and I qualified for the Soho Mega 1 which was fantastic. In a matter of 15 days I was up and running. Thats the quickest install I've ever gone through. The only minor issue I had was that I noticed my route was going to a POP in LA. After contacting them why this was happening, it was because they needed to get more "cross connects" with covad in a local POP. The said additional "Cross connects" will be installed in other POPs across the country so if you get installed to a non local POP, don't worry it will be fixed soon.

But being routed to LA first then going back to Northern California, my pings were not only great but fantastic! I was pinging sub 50ms to many servers I access. I was even getting a better ping than my friend on a Counter Strike server we were both playing on and he has PacBell ADSL installed. Yep, there are two DSL lines going into his house. I wanted to get my own as his is 1.5Mbsps Down/128kbps Up, so I still continued business with Megapath because I think they are a great ISP.

However It still doesn't make sense for me to be routed down to LA but I will be switched over once they do get those cross connects installed. Which they said was soon. Also since before I had the Netopia 3100-i router which is for iDSL only, I needed to get the Netopia 7200 router for SDSL. Instead of having me bite on another hefty price tag for the 7200, Megapath is allowing me to exchange the 3100 for the 7200 so I don't need to pay for the 7200 which is excellent.

Tech support wait has been longer now though than before. I would think so since the many other Northpoint customers that Megapath has are trying to fight for a support personnel as well. But I found out the best way to contact them was via email. I did notice though some requests are answered faster than others, I suppose they have a priority level for each request that is made and respond to the high priority ones first.

All in all Megapath is a great ISP if you can fork out the money for the excellent business class service. Hell I'm charging it to my United mileage plus card so I get 219 Miles/month which is not bad at all.

    95128 iDSL 144/144 Install Review:

    ------------------------------------------

Ok, so after a couple of months after getting it installed. My experience with MegaPath has been great. This ISP knows and has live customer service and technical support! As like everyone else pointed out, sales sent out information prior to installation via email. My initial setup was not the greatest as Northpoint had ran out of ports/pairs at the serving CO. However MegaPath kept me informed and did not charge me until I was up and running. Also Northpoint was responsive to get new equipment out at the CO as there was an ETA of two weeks for them to do that which they did do it in that amount of time. I placed an order first week of January of 2000. Didn't get up and running until March 18,2000. Over all it was worth the wait.

As I was limited to the distance dilema, I am only able to get 144/144 iDSL. However, since my use is mostly for Online gaming, latency has not been an issue as the average ping is around 20-50 ms for west coast servers. And about 70-120 ms for east coast servers.

The netopia DSL router is a really good unit. but the pricetag bites. But from what I've read on the forums/usenet, the price they sold it at was lower than what others were selling it for. Plus its configurable to take on additional bandwidth in the even I move closer to a CO.

And a final note, since I was connected there was only one

downtime and that lasted only one evening. Calling MegaPath Technical Support at around 8pm, I got a live answer to get

more info about the downtime status.

And another thing, though this is not Megapaths fault, Above.net to qwest.net juncture has been giving me a problem lately with latency issues to a specific domain during weekday daytime. It's probably due to all the surfing done at work by everyone with internet access from thier work computer. heh. But, I've been communicating back and forth with a couple of people in support in getting this issue resolved.

I moved from the city out to the country to get away from it all. Too bad that meant DSL also!! The C.O. here is not even equipped for DSL.After having DSL for several years going back to dial up was unbearable. Because I use a VPN, I really could not use sattelite, so T1 Frame Relay was my only choice.

I ordered 128k/128k which is fast enough for 4 or 5 people to surf the web. Also I run a web server and email server for my business.

The salesman was extremely helpful. I was looking at getting a 512k package .The salesman took the time to find out what I planned to do and suggested I start out with a 128k package. If I need to increase the speed there is no additonal setup fees or anything. It turns out 128k is plenty of speed. As soon as I signed the contract I was setup with access to the Megapath customer care intranet site. From the very start they were really good at keeping me informed, by email, the customer care site and by phone. They coordinated the work SBC had to do and everything was done when they said it would be. When the day came, the installtion tech came out, plugged the router in and everything came right up. The router is a netopia 4522XL. It does NAT, and is very easy to work with. If you like megapath will make configuration changes to the router or you can do it yourself. So far I have never lost connection to the internet. All things considered, megapath delivers a quality product and excellent service. I would highly reccommend them!!

I would never recommend Megapath to anyone. The experience from day one has
been a complete hassle. Unfortunately the person I have been setting up the
service for lives in an area where there are not a lot of providers
available so we had to go with Megapath. Customer service is horrible,
rebates were promised but have received no information how to receive and
there were problems with the dsl once it was installed. I have tried
numerous time to contact the customer service but I have been put on hold a
number of times for over an hour and when I have left a message, I have
gotten NO response. I called three days ago about making a payment for
monthly service and I still have gotten no response. If you can avoid it,
    do...Megapath is horrible.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
    ·DSL EXTREME
First a little bit of history. For two years, I had PacBell ADSL. It was great. I'd get 1.2 mbps downloads. Then, for whatever reason, the modem would lose synch, though all LEDs on the modem were on and solid. So, PacBell said it wasn't their problem, it's because I was running a network at home. Uh...huh. So I called Megapath and Alexi Teferi took excellent care of me. Assured me that I wouldn't have the same problems on Megapath ADSL. So, I switched. The line was solid, but shortly the problems resurfaced. Layer 1 failure, loss of signal.

While the Megapath support folks were trying to help, I kept getting the line of "ADSL is best effort, we don't make any guarantees". Covad wouldn't do anything beyond basic tests. The line was now going down three times a day. Covad put me in safe mode, and then it only went down once a week. However, I can't go down at all. I have people hosting off of me.

I called Alexi back, and she immediately got the ball rolling to get me upgraded to 384 kbps SDSL. She gave me a credit on my ADSL router, my five static IPs for free and expedited the install. The 384 line has been flawless. Yes, I do miss my fast downloads, but I love the line stability. I am getting 85-90% of my rated line speed and everyone is happy.

When I was on MP ADSL the latency from the EC on dslreports was ~90ms. With SDSL 384 it dropped to 77. Megapath sells you a Netopia 7200 series router which is a good piece of hardware. My only complaint is why does the thing have a hub builit into it, why not a switch?

I can't comment on mail/DNS as I provide my own services, but Megapath did work with me to get reverse delegation set up.

Megapath, to put it simply, rocks. Yes, they are expensive (139/month for 384 SDSL, but in my area, I've been told that's actually quite a deal). But if you need a stable connection with low latency (you online gamers come to mind), Megapath is the way to go.

Well, it's been a few months, and while I've had a few glitches, the service has been rock solid. I don't regret switching to SDSL one bit, and I don't really miss the download speeds. I still stand by megapath, they simply rock.

Update 28 Oct 2003 - Still with megapath, still loving them. The only serious "complaint" is I wish they'd lower their prices, they're still a bit pricey. I think in the past year I've had an hour of down time, kinda hard to beat that. Still love 'em. Just wish they were a bit cheaper.

Update 30 May 2004 - Moved to a new house and Covad/Megapath wasn't available. Switched back to SBC. So far, SBC has been rock solid.

Well after 12 months of using Megapath without a major problem it all started to go downhill.
Had very little downtime for almost 12 months. The only problem I almost ever had was that I had to restart my router every month or so.

Then in August of 2003 everything starting going bad.
First there were major problems with all of the viruses that were released. Megapath seemed to take a little longer then normal to get them resolved. People in the DC area had about 3 weeks of poor latency and there was zero SLA credit given. I and do mean $0 of credit for almost dial-up quality service on a T1 line.

Then as soon as that was resolved (end August) I started getting about 40% packet loss. After calling them numerous times they determined that I was maxing out my T1 connection. (95 kbps!!!)
Once I showed then the MRTG graphs I was told that I was maxing out my router. (with a 19% load)

This continued for almost 6 weeks and finally in mid October 2003 I just gave up and decided to colocate all of my machines at Equinix.

So.... the great service has died.... Switching over to Verizon DSL for $29.95 per month now. Not getting the speeds of the MegaPath T1, but that was $650 per month. The waiting an hour for tech support sucks as well. But I did hear that they now have a seperate phone line for T1 subscribers. Which they should of had from the beginning as far as I'm concerned.

I would still recommend a small business to use them if you need the upload. But if you do sign up make sure you that get a gaurantee of less than 1% packet loss and a gaurantee on network latency. Otherwise you may be in a world of hurt.
They don't seem to help unless the line is completely down.

There prices on DSL are much better and really no one should be hosting on a T1 anyway.

After having a DSL line with Megapath for the past 15 months our company had a growth spurt and required more bandwidth to the internet. We contacted Megapath again because our service and support with the DSL line was absolutely flawless, so why not go with them for the T1 we needed? As it turns out their pricing structure, including rebates were very favorable and competitive to say the least. We were very happy with the quick install of the circuit and I would recommend this vendor highly to anyone needing this type of service.
