Alright, I am not one of those people who go around bashing entities based on their performance. But OH MY GOD. PSN.net has broken all records when it comes to hold times. I once clocked myself at two hours before hanging up. The wait to get to tech support is NEVER less than an hour, and usually I get hung up on after being told to leave a message. Heck, even if you call their sales people, it takes a while to get through. I have heard that they have put a freeze on new orders. This does not bode well for PSN. No one in their right mind would alienate potential customers even at the expense of catching up and appeasing their current ones. You should have seen the installation fiasco, I literally e-mailed PSN 15 times over missed appointment dates, I did not get A SINGLE REPLY. I should have realized that this was a sign of things to come.
I have rarely had a resolution with PSN.net. I called today, after discovering that my line was down. I could not get through to PSN's tech-support after three tries lasting an hour each. I finally called northpoint and they gave me another number, supposedly for tech support. It turned out to be someone in billing, but she was nice enough to check up on my acount and tell me that there is an outage in the Washington DC area (where I live) No ETA, no nothing.
I will cancel my service, unlike some of you I did not pay an entire year up front, however, I wish I had been to this site before I placed the order. I would have saved myself much grief by paying a few extra bucks and getting decent service. Mind you Verizon sucks as well, but at least they stand behind their service.
Anyone have experience with any other DSL providers in the DC area, please let me know. I currently have SDSL, and it is almost always worth more than ADSL. My connection has never been higher than 250K, and I never get a sustained download of more than 60K (I have 784/392) I have had the service since September, but the Install took almost TWO months (they blamed it on the Verizon strike) so my rebate check will probably never come.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone may have.

Update: 12/4/2000
I read reviews of speakeasy.net and got in touch with them. Guess what, I had 1.5MB/384K Service installed in less than a month. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions...I considered capu.net as well, but they were not offering a shell account or a second IP with their package.
I would like to review speakeasy, but am unable to see how I can do it having done PSN.net already. Does dslreports allow multiple reviews? An interesting thing to note is that while I am still paying $39/month for PSN, I still have not canceled the service. I want to make sure Covad works out OK, before I let anyone (even losers like PSN.net) go. With what has been happening in the DSL space (Covad layoffs, Northpoint stock crashes) I am not sure if anyone is reliable anymore.

I ordered service back on May 15 2000. I finally got it installed on August 31. Kudos to the NorthPoint tech for being on time and courteous. He did what he could but told me at the time I was pretty far out from the CO and my speed wouldn't be what it was supposed to be. I ordred 785/392 SDSL....according to the sales person I "was so lucky to qualify for that speed, not many people do". I won't hold that against him, I know most sales people are full of crap to begin with. What I ended up with was initially a line that averaged about 30 down and 194 up. Of course, numerous calls and emails went unanswered. When I finally did get a hold of a 1st level tech at PSN, he walked me through the obvious settings in my TCP/IP stack. (He also activated my email account, that was never done in the first place). Nice enough kid, but other than the basics he was lost. (I can't pound too hard on the 1st level people, I know what they go through. Working a call center in a *good* company sucks, I can't imagine what those poor kids have to put up with) Ticket issued to Tier 2 or whatever. No word since. In the meantime I ordered IDSL from a Covad partner ISP and am waiting for that to complete. One positive I guess, Covad apparently ordered new outside wire. Since the new wire and phone box was put on the house I've had better speed, about 100 down and 200 up. I can't wait until my new service is here and I can get off PSN. Hopefully, I'll get it before they go under.

I hope that anyone planning on getting DSL stays away from PSN.Net. Please benefit from my mistake as I have paid greatly for it. The installation was done poorly by Northpoint who also has poor customer service. An ape has better social skills than PSN techies who are unable to engage with customers in need of service. After waiting for hours listening to Coyote Jazz - if you can get through AND if they don't disconnect you - they are unable to give you a coherent understanding of why you are having problems. After being issued a trouble ticket, I was forced to call Northpoint. The techs there are aware of the problems at PSN but were also unable to provide any satisfaction.
Do not use this service. They keep you on hold for hours. They do not return phone calls. They do not respond to emails. BIG RIPOFF.

I cannot believe that this shoddy operation is allowed to continue selling services.
Same stories as the rest of you. I have a relatively simple problem for them to solve - they are not forwarding email packets, and my domain has not been getting email since switching to PSN. It would take them all of 5 minuites to fix it, but I cannot get anyone to answer the phone.
I have spent a total of 5 hours on hold and written 6 different emails, with not so much as a peep. I think the only one remaining on the payroll is a chimp named 'Bobo', who only knows sign language.
The last time I called I held for 2 hours and 42 minutes before the battery ran out on my phone!
I am cancelling the charges and switching services.
DO NOT USE PSN!

I signed up with PSN because I was to far from the Central Office to get ADSL and they had the best deal on IDSL at about $40 a month. My install took about a month but there seemed to be no coordination with Northpoint which was supposed to do the inside wiring. Bellsouth just showed up one day unannounced and did the inside wiring. I'm still not sure if this was supposed to happen. My connection for the first week was good but then I started getting dropped every 15 minutes or so. I called PSN tech support, and after literally 3 hours on hold, reported the problem. The next week I lost my connection completely and have been without it for over a month now. I'd cancel my contract but I've already paid a year in advance, so I'm stuck. For the past week I've not been able to reach PSN at all. It seems not even their voice phones are working and I'm wondering if they are still even in business. I've resorted to calling Northpoint directly, something you're apparently not supposed to do, to try and get the connection fixed. ....and I wait and suffer with my dial up for the time being.

Here is my quick review of PSN.net. Like everybody I "enjoy" long waits for any phone call I make there, and my e-mails are never answered. However, I got my rebate without any fuss, and there was only one outage that lasted one week-end. Overall, I do get the 764/764 performance promised, however, I have one big problem. The latency on psn.net is so bad that multiplayer gaming is worse with them than with my 33.6. So I contacted Verio and I am switching DSL providers.
My take, if you don't do online gaming, and you're lucky (no need to talk to tech support and rebate on time), it's a great deal. Otherwise, spring the extra $10 and get a good provider.

It started with the sales call. I actually had to call back because the sales guy was too busy. That should have been my first clue!!! They make you pay for one year up front!!! Installation took forever and included numerous phone calls. Worked OK for the first 2 months then was down 75-90% of the time. I waited up to 8 hours on hold for tech support!!!!!! Average hold times are 3 hours!!!!!!!! Techs lied about what they would do! Promised to call me back on many occasions and never did!!!!!!I cancelled today, now they tell me they won't give me a refund!!!!!! Don't under any circumstances order from this company!!!!!

I have had service now for 2 months and the service is bad beyond belief. They fail at everything they do, and the people who work there have zero knowledge about the Internet and Telecommunications. I am lucky to get 56K speeds out of my 384K service. From the grapevine I hear they are going out of business and they have serious legal problems. Crash and burn baby!!! As a side note check out what happened with COVD today under news releases. PSN is one of the largest debtors to Northpoint, and they are going to get turned off very soon, trust me on that one, a company like Northpoint needs to bring the stock price up and one way is to get rid of PSN. Get out while you can!!

Can't beat the price! 768/768 for $39.00 per month. Don't make the mistake I made in letting Northpoint leave without being able to ping PSN's router. Northpoint told me to call PSN to get the line up and running. 5 days later I finally got through. I was on hold forever! You'll never get through if you have problems. I've been lucky, my service has been up since it was first turned on. PSN's network seems to have some bottlenecks. My upload and download speeds vary significantly! PSN should only be used by experienced IT professionals who don't need ANY support.
