UPDATE: 03/07/01 WOW!!!! Road Runner Cable came out the same day I called (yesterday). Great 3000/416 speeds. This is it for me and my free DSL though, I unplugged the modem. This week, I'll call Ameritech to "convert" my SDSL line back to a second voice line. I'm sure Northpoint will have to get involved to unplug me from the DSLAM. As f***ed up as they are and as full as their hands are, I doubt it'll be much of a problem. Then, my guilt will be over and fogotten.
I only wish that PSN would have half as much guilt from defrauding users. Legal action against them should be focused squarely upon the top management, liquidating their assets first, then the whatever is left of the company. After that, of course, should come jail time. I'll stick around dslreports.com though, awesome site!!!
UPDATE: 03/05/01 I'm STILL f***ing here!!! At this point, I guess all the credit should go to Northpoint. Full speed, 24/7. The guilt is getting to me a little bit though. I'm chicken to run web/game/nap servers, so tomorrow I order cable.
UPDATE: 02/05/01 Oh how I wish that I could transfer my working service to someone who has been burned badly by these creeps. My DSL connection continues to roll along as smooth and as fast as ever.
Is it possible that my connection has simply fallen into a place that Northpoint and(or) Ameritech are oblivious to? Or I wonder if my IP is known, but that it is incorrectly registered (ie paid for) by another customer out of my CO- a buisiness perhaps, who bought multiple IP's, but for some reason isn't, or can't use it, AND isn't reporting it. Or IS using it, but for whatever reason, it's working?!?
Any thoughts anybody????
FACTS:
1) I've never been charged a cent for a good six months of service. (a month after signing up I called to get the status, and they had no record of me. Confirmed with billing AND my credit card statement)
2) Only been down once that I'm aware of, contrary to the "first few days of the month" outages reported before PSN went down.
3) I'm STILL online. I obviously know that I really have service through Northpoint, my IP and tracerts confirm this.
I consider myself VERY lucky indeed. Thanks PSN, I wouldn't be here without you.

For one thing if you were a tier1 ISP you would know that spam is not coming from me and would let me know what is going on before you disconnect my account. Unauthorized activity did not originate from my network, that includes the spam and abuse I have been through. Second there is no open relay. Even if there is one now I can't test it because I need to reach my network externally and see if i can relay an e-mail through my smtp.
Please forward the following to your tier3 person in charge of spam and abuse. I have extracted 2 headers and 1 body and a portion of my log file from the smtp server. All of the spam e-mail originate from the ip found in the 2 headers, all of the spam e-mail contain some bullshit lender html form. If you wish i can tar up my entire queue that was not allowed relay and send you a copy. You DONT know how much this person pisses me off as well as what psn has done to turn off my access with out letting me know. I really want to nail this guy so badly you have no understanding of my frustrations! I have also been been in contact with another ISP MegaPath networks, they can do a North Point ISP switch over in about 7 days because I already have the sdsl line installed. At this rate what do I have to lose?!?!?! Yes I do have to play double but with their tech support answering call yes and actually answering call and 24hrs a day how bad can that be. Trying to call psn for tech support.... waiting for hours and getting hung up on 3 times before I even get to talk to a warm body, in addition to the fact that to even getting to talk to a warm body requires at least 1 hour of listening to the coyote on the smooth jazz vs going to the dentist and getting my teeth pulled with out Novocain, well I rather do the latter.
The day I found about the spams hogging up the queue on my server waiting for my (sysadmin@pitogo,com) interaction allow or deny, I immediately sent out e-mails to the sysadmin at each of the networks I saw the e-mail coming from. Namely the 4.4.179.0/24 network. At the time I didn't have my sniffer on. In addition to the e-mails sent out I also put an IP filter on my firewall to block anything from the 4.4.179.0/24 network (some ppp group) and archive my log files and all of the spamers e-mail in my queue. If this happened to my DS3 at work I assure you your company would not be happy.
There is no open relay on my network. That said let me know what psn is going to do.

Sept 18. - After waiting for months for Pacbell DSL I finally gave up and went back to Northpoint. I found PSN at the Northpoint web site and the price was certainly attractive.
The install went very smoothly, partly since this was my second install (I'd moved) I knew what to expect. I'd used Northpoint before and have found them to be a very good company to deal with, even when my first ISP went out of business. PSN emailed me all the information I needed and I had everything configured before the Northpoint installer arrived.
However, I had no access to the news server. I called for over a month before I could log on to the news server. The shortest wait time I ever had was about 45 minutes with the longest over 4 hours. Even after I could access the news server I found its speed to be pathetically slow. I finally signed up with a news service for $6 a month.
I often cannot get outlook express to log on to the mail server. However, the web interface doesn't seem to have any problems - except the contact list doesn't seem to remember any contacts that are entered.
While I was waiting for the problem with accessing the news server to be fixed I called tech support several times a week. Several times I was hung up on after waiting an hour or two. The technicians were always polite and apologetic.
Emails to tech support NEVER were responded to.
I am still waiting for my rebate check.
Oct 13. - PSN finally came through on the rebate. They credited back my credit card.
A couple of things I forgot to mention in the initial review:
I received several emails during the installation process. They informed me that the DSL modem was being shipped (it arrived shortly after) and they sent me all the configuration information I needed ahead of time. Whereas most of the complaints I have seen seem to be with the install process, in my case every thing went extremely well.
Regarding the speed of my connection, I was promised 784/784 and that is what I seem to be getting. The latency seems to be very good as well. I have still only had one outage lasting less than 8 hours.
All the other comments above still apply. As far as I can tell, hold times when calling PSN are still abysmal. It took at least 6 calls to Billing to get my rebate. Each of those was about 30 minutes on hold.
Nov. 3 - My DSL connection went down today. I thought I was done for sure, but I thought - it is only 4 pm, so since I was sure I was going to be on hold at least 2 hours I figured I'd give it a shot. To my utter amazement Tech Support picked up within 20 minutes. That is still long but within reason. The Tech Support Rep told me that Exodus had a problem in Los Angeles and that it would be fixed in a few hours. Since that matched what traceroute was telling me I let it go. Sure enough, my service was restored a few hours later.
Maybe there is hope left.
Nov. 4 - I cannot believe it. When I spoke with the Tech Rep yesterday he promised to call and let me know when my service was available. I figured - Yeah sure, they never return calls. This morning I went out and when I got back I had a message saying my service should be back up and if it wasn't I should try recycling the router and if they didn't work to call him back or send me an email at his email address (not support@psn.net).

I am from Chicago and I have had PSN for about two months now. The installation took about 1 month but the day I got it, I was surfing in about 10 minutes. It is static IP but hey you can't ask for everything. All in all i have to say they are awesome. I know that a lot of people had problems with them and yes I agree the technical support is horrible but once you are connected it rocks. I am dead serious. I was told I would connect at the lowest possible 368k or so and usually i am on at 400-450k on average. Once I was even at 638k which was sweet. But anyhow I don't really recommend PSN to people that don't understand much about interent and LAN settings. I mean I have worked with computers for a while so I had no problem configuring it, but I understand how it could be hard for others. I would also like to add that PSN has NEVER gone any slower then 368k and has NEVER gone down on me. So although many people have had a problem. I have nothing but praise for the only internet company that would give me DSL here in my neighborhood.

When we signed up we were told we'd be getting 1 year prepaid, installation and modem for $329.40. Veronica emailed me and confirmed this information. Then a little while after it was installed we found out that the 1 year WAS NOT included in that price and that it only covered 2 months...I showed them the proof but Rochelle from the billing dept said they couldn't honor it. Before when I tried to reach someone through email about this problem I sent emails MANY times but it seems like when there's a problem they like to avoid you. The dsl connection seems to be working well now but when we first got it running it worked but didn't go it's full speed. Then there was a time it went out for about a week an a half. I've emailed Rochelle many times to see if I've been given credit for those days but she and everyone else there are VERY BAD about not replying. The only place I seem to get anywhere with is the Tech Support. A note for anyone who's waiting for their rebate from Northpoint call their rebate dept at 866-607-8966. I just found this out today and need to call. I've said what I feel about PSN.NET. They are one of the most unorganised bunch of people. The only reason I am putting up with it is because we are too far to have DSL with anyone else.

Review Dump: (PSN) Lot's of bad word about this ISP. I ordered from them before reading dslreports.com. Boy was I scared sh*@less. I thought I was doomed. However all in all the service was fast; approximately 3 weeks wait time from order. I live in bumf*@ck egypt so I was dealing with 28.8 connection. I needed Prozac to keep me from hanging myself while waiting to connect. I'm only getting IDSL for $39 smacks, no contract here in chicago. They were misleading when talking about the $250 rebate and I haven't seen it yet. Static IP, Cheap router.
AOSTICE BOTTOM LINE: If you have no choice and are on the verge of suicide take psn for a ride. My service is good; all uptime and decent speed so I can't complain. Take the day off from work if you need to get ahold of them. Looong wait. Don't hold your breath waiting for the rebate trust me I'm turning blue.
If you do go, don't get yourself into a contract.

9/22 Ordered DSL receieved several e-mail confirmations regarding install projections and what to expect and when.
9/25 Receieved additional e-mail confirming that SWBell will be at my site on 10/3.
10/2 Much to my surprise SWBell arrived a day early! Yeah I know I couldn't believe it either. They installed a new line to my residence and tested within two days.
10/5/ PSN was sending me e-mail telling me the inside wiring will be scheduled for 10/9. I was so slow to respond they bumped me for the 9th. I called and spoke to someone immediately and re-scheduled for the very next day.
O.K. So far I'm thinking... all the horror stories I've read about, the slow DSL install process and lack of service from the ISP's Did I just get lucky?
Remember the local Telco can be an extreme burden and the ISP's are offering a lot of speed for a little $$. You are going to have to deal with some problems.
10/10 The install was scheduled between 10am and 2pm and the installer showed up at 1:40pm. The tech hooked up his laptop and had the configuration done within 10 minutes. They originally had the Line speed set for 784/784 but due to distance and regular line noise ran it down to 416/416 which was the speed promised.
Definitely use the tweak tools on the DSLreports site and pay attention to the message boards for problems you may be experiencing. Most of these users know what there doing and they've spent countless minutes trying to fix them.
PSN.Net confirmed each step of the installation process via e-mail and I only had to call them 2 times. 1.) Order and 2.) Final install date
Static IP address Line Speed = Consistently 385/401 SDSL Modem = 3COM SDSL Modem/Bridge (Delivered before I knew it was coming) Monthly terms = 39.95 No contract
Modem provided free and you own after 12 months of use.

I ordered a 784/392k Static DSL connection. July 28th. I had to pay the same day I ordered it for installation / modem /ect.. (about $260) with a rebate of that amount if I stay with them for a year. I had to buy the ethernet card though, $15, no biggie.
These people were nice and eager to take my money and give me my stuff since the lady told me this was about her 30th call in 2 hours. These guys are busy and want to get you signed up and moved on to the next stage, the wait of death. I learned "tech support" is unreachable at peak times with calling them a few times and waiting around 30 mins - 4 hours each time.
PSN re-sells Northpoint and Convad DSL. They (Northpoint) sent a 3COM SDSL modem and a "Thanks Mr. MoneyBags" letter which was lame as all heck. The predicted wait about about 35 days I think, which wasn't too bad.
These guys are ok, busy, but ok. Service is good once it works, I mean damn good. A 784k line should on average give you a max. download speed of about 90k. I get about 150k download, and a 110k upload. If you can get it, why not pass this up?

Am I too lucky? My DSL has been on since Sept. 1, and I haven't experienced any downtime or slowdown. But who knows? I'm not monitoring my line 24/7. If you are a techie who doesn't need tech support much, it's really good value. 400-600+KBps for $40, I rather go for cheap $$ line than $$$ for good service.
Well, I know their service is annoying, and don't like their billing practice, either. They charge 15 days before starting month. So your credit card will be billed on Oct. 15, for November service. No rebate check yet..it's been 40 days from the date of service.
let's see how they do for a while.......

Its been 5 days and no dsl, I admit, PSN sucks!, long hold times, stupid music on hold, not to mention customer service, But Mark A at PSN technicial support did a good job, when Northpoint ticket service was down he sent the ticket once its back up.
Then today I called back, Mark A called Northpoint and try to resolve my line, within 5mins on hold I was back up. I was suprised that I can see my WAN and LAN lights back up, although I wish they had work on my ticket earlier w/o calling them.
But at least its back up and running, for now.
