DSL Review
Provider: Covad ISP: Alternate Access of Seattle, Wash. (aa.net)
I've got their 384K Business DSL package. The Telco alternative was GTE. At 0.9 miles from the CO, I was eligible for any DSL speed. I needed the fixed IP address so I can run a web server and other network services. I chose them and the speed because of price, and they don't meter traffic through the line.
Service started the first of July. Have had no problems, had only one brief outage the first week.
The service uses a Flowpoint 2200, which acts as a router and ethernet hub, providing four ports. Unfortunately, the Flowpoint only comes with Windows configuration software. I only use Macs, so have either had to have the ISP do configuration, or use the command line interface through Telnet.
AA has been fairly good at providing phone support to a network novice like myself, in getting everything configured properly. My only complaint would be that they need to acknowledge email a bit better.
One point that must be made better, and that almost got me-- If you go with Covad (or any provider who isn't your local Telco), you will not be able to use the same line for DSL and voice together. That's a service that can only be provided by the telco. All it means is that instead of replacing both phone lines with the DSL/Voice hybrid, I only disconnected the second line.
