I ordered Megabit (USWest's ADSL) from USWest, 256k. The installer arrived as scheduled. I was his last appointment on a Friday and he was immensely relieved to see that I use a Macintosh so his job would be short and easy work.
The installer checked the lines, configured the modem, verified the connection and was out the door in under 20 minutes. I never lost my connection EXCEPT during scheduled down times about which I was notified by email well before they occurred.
Never had a need for tech support. Never had a bad experience until I moved to a location where I could no longer receive service :-(

I've used US West's DSL service in MN since June of '98. In March of this year, I installed it at work as well. My home connection had been rock solid for the first 10 months... not a problem. The last 6 have been mostly great with only a few outages of more than an hour. My biggest beef with US West is customer service, and in particular the switch from bridging to PPP for many of it's customers.
For me personally, it initially renedered virtually every internet application I use, useless. Thanks to the folks in the uswest.dsl newsgroup, I was able to get all of my apps working fine with the use of NAT.
Installation was not a problem. All scheduled completion dates were met by US West, and in a timely manner. The longest wait was for the initial service back in June '98 - a wait of about 4 weeks.
Overall however, I'm satisfied with my DSL and the performance for the dollar that I'm *currently* getting from it.
US West, while providing a basically good product could stand to work on technical support.

update to review from Michae.warzecha@valleylab.com
talked with an engineer at cisco about streaming video problem and fixed it by opening ports for UDP in cisco 675 NAT register...streaming quicktime at DSL speeds are beautiful. still having system hangs every 8-10 minutes but think it is Open Transport related...will try OS9 next month

1) I received 256k DSL line from uswest. 2) I had some small set backs in the beginning but was up and running in about 1 week after due date 3) I have been getting 640k down and 256k up for the last 2 months. Only have had 2 disconnects for less than 12 hrs 4) I currently run a Delta Force dedicated server and have 2 other PC's connected to the DSL line and have had excellent speed and very few CRC's 5) I have recently upgraded my external router ( Cisco 975 ) to CBOS 2.2 and have been a much happier person ( over 200 Nat entry's every time the IP changed was a pain ) 6) I live in Phoenix, AZ

hiya...review for US West DSL got it about a month ago, and first, the speed is AWESOME. I don't download at work anymore because it's too slow. I have seen regularly, download speed of 65-75 KBytes/second or 520-600kbaud. Customer service was hard to reach but very gracious and helpful once there. 2 still unresolved problems however: 1) Can't get streaming quicktime audio or video because of dynamic IP 2) system hangs for 27 seconds every 8 then 10 minutes while connected. problem lasts after disconnecting web link until restart. Equipment: PowerMac 8500/233(604e) w/ 208Mb RAM, OS 8.6, Cisco 675 DSL Modem,10baseT ethernet. any advice on similar problems reported would be helpful and appreciated zac4mac@uswest.net - From: reviews@dslreports.com [mailto:reviews@dslreports.com] Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 1999 9:46 AM

I use US West as both my DSL provider and as my ISP. I've had a DSL line since Nov 98.
First, a disclaimer: I'm a US West employee. I don't think it affects my viewpoint to US West's benefit, nonetheless it's only fair for me to disclose.
Even though an employee I have to go through the same ordering process, call the same numbers, etc.
My house had three voice lines, main number, daughter's line, computer line. The first two were multiplexed, the PC line was not. I specifically arranged things so they had to run a new drop for that line because the multiplexing was creating problems with the analog modem I used at the time.
When I ordered the DSL I was initially told I didn't qualify, because of the mutiplexing. Since I KNEW the PC line wasn't MUX'd I insisted and when they did actually test it the line qualified.
This was the only problem I had ordering, and why they get a 4 rather than 5 for Install Coordination. The rest of the install went smoothly, the modem showed up on the day promised, service was working as promised (I did the self install). I was actually pleasantly surprised at the quality of the documentation.
In the first month I had the service I experienced several outages of at least several hours each. I think they were growing pains as the service was brand new in the area and I've not experienced a single outage since.
When I did have to talk to tech support they were informative and helpful. I did have to spend a fair amount of time on hold, but of course this is during an outage so I imagine their call volume went up as a result. Nonetheless that's why 4, not 5 for tech support.
I have the 256K line with a Cisco 675. Initially I had a 605 (at least I think that was the model). I received the 675 in the mail one day, called tech to find out why, was explained they were upgrading. The switch didn't cause me any grief.
I regularly get 40-50kps downloads, sometimes high 60's, even hit 71kps a few times (called the wife down to look at it the first time, "WOW Look at that honey, isn't that amazing!!" Her response: "Uh Huh, can I go back to my show now?". I guess it's a guy thing).
I have the 675 connected to an 8 port 10/100 hub with 2 PCs running full time on it. I've had no problem sharing the connection.
I also regularly host LAN parties. I've had as many as 12 PCs networked together, all going out to a game server on the net through the DSL. Everyone was getting sub 100 pings!
Overall, I love it! The speed is wonderful but it's the "always on" aspect that really changes the way you use the net.
A note regarding security for anyone considering "always on" DSL: Use the security scan from here, you'll sleep better at night. I imagined I was wide open but after having the scan done I know that while not 100% secure (is anyone?) I'm reasonably secure.
It's like your house, you lock the doors and windows and feel comfortable with that. You know of course that if someone is determined to get in, they will. To be absolutely secure costs large sums of money and changes your life style. Ditto here, a few simple precautions and you're reasonably secure. Or you can spend big bucks on firewalls, etc. In my opinion, overkill for a residence. For a business, a different story. Just do regular backups for your data. But you do that anyway, right?

Hey,
Well I am here to tell you that uswest dsl (isp side of it anyway) is pretty over-rated. First of all, when I got it, half of the applications you normally could use with dial up, wouldn't work because of a snafu with the cisco 675's operating system that uswest uses as it's cpe. They have since fixed it sort of, but the fix requires that you open all the ports to your computer, leaving you open to security risks. So, all in all, I am pretty happy. The support is terrible.. the online info is terrible... the employees are undereducated, but the service when running correctly can't be beat for the money.

I got the xdsl service the frist month it was avilable in Portland, Oregon. I moved from very good ISP to uswest.net. The install was very smooth. When I had problems the tech support line did what they could to get me back on-line. One night I call and spent over four hours with tech support trying to get windows nt online. The point here is windows nt is NOT supoorted by uswest.net. This was a service beyond what I was paying for. The move from bridging to routing/ppp was not very smooth but once it was done things worked great. The cisco 675 needs a software update. Once cbos 2.2 is installed many of the problems with NAT are resolved. The major problem is dealing with two different companies, ie uswest.net and uswest.com. One works with the line and one is the isp. The unlimited up/download is the best part. Many nights I connect at 50 to 60 Kbps. Love the speed....

(I just received my DSL modem last night so I'm not rating the Reliability yet)
I am very impressed. I have had a wonderful time with Uswest. About 10 days ago I ordered the 256k DSL line with the Megapak $47 per month deal that includes the DSL line and USWest.net ISP with the 605 Cisco using PPP and a dynamic IP. I don't have a LAN & I don't plan on running UNIX so I don't really see the advantage in getting the 675. The operator told me I would receive my modem on the 17th and It arrived right on time. it took me a total of 60 mins to get all set up. Half of that time was installing the filters on the phones (wall mounted jacks took the longest) the only Problem that I had with the installation was that no where did it tell me what my VCI number was. I was pretty sure it was 1 but it wasn't noted anywhere. I called USWest to verify the VCI and I was talking to an operator in about 4 mins and in 20 mins I had my Email name changed (I had to do that also) dealing with Uswest on the phone was painless for me. They only problem I had setting it up was it wouldn't connect at 1st but after a reboot, problem was solved, just like the manual said to.
Web pages fly now. Extremely fast compared to my old 56k. I downloaded the Real Player G2, an 8.1 meg file, in about 3 to 4 mins. Roughly about 55kb/sec. I am very happy
As for the Real test. I am an avid Internet gamer and my pings were around the mid 200's on a game like Half Life/TFC. With DSL I averaged about 95 ping. Very very nice.
Overall USWests get my Seal of Approval

I ordered 256K ADSL from US West with self installation. I ordered the Cisco 675 for $50 extra. The modem arrived within two weeks and on a lark, plugged it in. It worked without a hitch in bridging mode.
A week later, it stopped working. After calling US West.Net for the first time, they told me that I had been switched to routing. Once I reconfigured the modem while waiting for tech support to answer the phone, it was again working. I have had one two day outage due to "weather" but other than that, everything has been fine.
The times that I have called tech support, I was on hold at least 15 to 20 minutes. Once the first level tech answered they could not resolve the problem or answer the question at hand. They then put me on hold again while looking for a second level tech. Each time, there were no second level techs available. The only time that I have had my questions answered was when I asked it via the USWest.net web page.
If you know what you are doing and don't need to have assistance from tech support, USWest provides good service. But don't have a problem you can't fix.
The normal services of the ISP (Mail, Newsgroups, etc) are what you expect of an ISP. They post new newsgroups quickly when asked.
The only major gripe is the lack of notification of when service was provided and when they changed service types.
I haven't found very many problems with PPP/Routing but I don't play on-line games. When I have my home network set up and my sons are on line, I may change my tune.
