I've had Verizon DSL since I dumped Comcrap back in Nov 05. I have been nothing short of amazed at the consistency of the service and the spot on speeds, always above the limit. I only wish we were in a Fios area, as I could really enjoy the added bandwidth, as I have 3/768 service currently. Overall I have been very satisfied with this service!

It's been over 3 years with Verizon dsl and still rock solid, upgraded to the 7/1.5 package last year..... WOW great service, still a very happy camper!!!

I installed the Verizon DSL service over two years ago, if memory serves.

I've always had the problem of not typically receiving the full speed I'm paying for. When I first signed up for Verizon DSL, I started with the basic 768 (down) service for what cost $30 at the time. I seldom got that speed, however, and also often the DSL went down during the evening and night time hours.

The original installation went smoothly. Verizon supplied the Westell VersaLink 327W. It has worked well. I have three devices connected: One PC by cable, another PC by wireless, and a PS3 by wireless. They all connect and work properly. The portforwarding for the PS3 works well. I recently upgraded the VersaLink to the latest firmware, version 4.4.3. That upgrade went well.

Later, during a promotion, when it became available, I upgraded to the 1768 (down) service for the same price. However, the same problems continued. That is, I seldom received that speed, and the system often went down during those same hours as it did previously, but less often by now (a year later), it seemed to me. I concluded that some sort of progress was being made to supply more reliable service, but how would I know.

Recently (about one month ago), I upgraded to the 3000 (down) service, as it was now available, at the same price ($30). Even so, the same issues persist. Only once have I received the 3000 speed, and then only for a short time, about 1 hour. My down speed is typically anywhere from the 900s to 1500s, or so. The DSL service often goes down at night, like always.

That's the way it is. Right now as I type this, my down speed is 1280. Rebooting the modem sometimes helps, but sometimes doesn't. Any improvement is only temporary. Even so, it's better, by a long shot, than the dial-up I had before. I'm not THAT unhappy about this situation, however. I never complained to Verizon about any of these issues. I'm not THAT hard to please.

The service meets my needs. When the service is down, I just wait until it comes up again. My needs are not critical. I only use the service for personal needs and convenience. Even so, I use it often, for shopping, for research, and for general information gathering. I like broadband very much.

    Frederick
    Arlington, Virginia

    Update:

It's been almost 1 1/2 years since I posted my review, above. Not much has changed since then, except that the service has become more reliable since my original post.

That is, the service doesn't drop during evening and night time hours, as it did previously. It still may drop, but not nearly as often. Verizon must have done something to improve connectivity. I have no idea of what that move was.

I still seldom get the full 3000 down speed, and when I do it doesn't last for long. My speed usually settles somewhere between about 1200 and 2500 (down), or so. Hey, that level of speed gives me very good performance. It works good!

    I'm a happy camper.

    Freddy

Bought deal offered 3 free months. Received $126 bill first month. Called billing. "Never heard of such a deal, but your account shows $5/mo for 6 months discount (which was never ever mentioned to me)". Total denial of offer despite my offer of copious and dated notes. Terrible copper phone sound. Repair Tech came one day late and had to go through 5 filters before he could find one he declared "adequate". Called Verizon billing the only department that is authorized to send filters!~!!!! "Want a better filter? Buy it!"

Bought 3Mbit download. get only 1.5 download. But the worst is "support" phone system. Web inquiry states "tech support (or whatever they call it) not functioning.

Wish they would put some of the people in their commercials to work fixing their system.

Have had Verizon for 6 years now. After a couple of issues in the first year the connection and speeds have been great. My main complaint: I would like to sign up for a years contract on their web site but it never works. Email spam filtering could be better, but it's
not bad. I had Charter Pipeline before, now that was a freaking nightmare!

Another year of great service. Looks like I could go up another tier but I don't need the speed. (yet)

Well, I was checking my phone bill online on 10/22 and a pop-up came up saying I was eligible for DSL and gasp! I clicked on it. I was signed up for 1500/128 service and the website said my active date would be 10/29. On 10/24 my equipment arrived at my house and I immediatley hooked it up (I never could follow directions) the light blinked for about a day and the next day it was synched. For the record I am hooked up through a Belkin 4 port router w/ built in PPPoE. Just for kicks I called verizon to find out how far they had me listed from the CO (you can about see the building from my backyard) their DB said 5,200 feet. My speed tests usually range between 1300-1474 --(highest its been) down and 80-110 up. Im perfectly happy with this service as I used to be on a sorry dial-up that would only connect at 33.3kbps. So around here Verizon Online DSL is definitley the best speed for the money.

    -UPDATE-
I am a happy camper now...I called in for the upload increase to 384k and had it effective in about 5min. you cant beat that with a wooden stick.

so I was pleased before, but now I am extremely happy with 1500/384 @ $29.99/month!!

    -UPDATE 6/19/09-
I dont have verizon anymore(moved). But I was happy with it for the years that I did.

    My Other Reviews·Verizon FIOS
I've had DSL, approx 7 years now, I've been very pleased. There were minor nuisances of not having svc (like when I moved) but they ended quick enough. My line is very consistant, and RARELY gives me any problems.

I recently decided to make the change from 3.0 to 7.1. I'm pleasantly impressed by the consistant speeds I get. I'm about 6400ft from the co now, and the only thing that bothers me is that fastpath won't work on this line any longer. When I had 3.0, it was working great, with pings in the low teens. However, after the upgrade to 7.1 and the request for fast path, the connection was mostly unusable at times, and often not usable at all. A change back to interleave fixed those issues and I now enjoy a rock solid 6.4Mbps/720kbps connection.

Tech support can be brutal at times. It's always advisable to get as far away from the first one that answers as you can. Level 1 tech support leaves alot to be desired. If you are reading this, and need ANY assistance with your VZ DSL svc, i would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you visit the Verizon Direct forum on this site. The people that answer your posts are very friendly, knowledgable, and always eager to help. I can NOT say the same for tech support via the 800#.

I'm FIOS capable where I live, however being in the city of Buffalo, with no franchise in place, I'm restricted to FIOS data only at this point. (I will probably NEVER give up my copper phone line).

Well, as of 6/26/09 i've taken the FIOS plunge for my internet... 20/5 package.... DSL, You served me GREAT over the past years, but it's time for the next gen...

It's $39.99 with voice service, or $42.99 stand-alone. Both options require you to sign up for at least a year to get those prices.

Dropped Cablevision/Optimum when Verizon DSL became available, only because Cablevision's TV service was awful, the Optimum was great. Repeated, ongoing problems with Verizon DSL in this semi-rural but highly populated area only 50 miles from NYC has been extraordinarily frustrating.

I purchased Verizon Online DSL at a 1.5 mbps download speed service level.

On June 12, the speed 'suddenly' degraded severely. I gave it a couple of days to resolve, did some troubleshooting at my end in the meantime, and on June 14 I called Verizon technical support.

The support team always wants the problem to be at my end. It MUST be my computer. But I explained that I have three computers and they are all seeing slow internet speed.

So we begin a test of my equipment - router and modem. The Verizon tech support person took over my computer, reconfigured my wireless router and disabled it from working at all. Then he dropped off the line leaving me with nothing. And he never called be back on the phone number that he very carefully collected as part of his script.

Fortunately, I know how to set up a wireless router, so I was able to reverse his mistakes and get back to where I was - SLOW speed.

I called every day to get an update status on the ticket, and every time, we did the same dance. The problem must be at my end, my computer, my router. Finally, I spoke to a supervisor who seemed to understand that we had already tested everything, and that if three different computers are seeing the same problem, then it is most likely not my computer. So he scheduled a service tech to visit my house on Friday June 19.

On Friday morning, the service tech called and said that there was a Verizon router problem in my area, they were working on it, and that he was not coming out. The next day, my ticket was closed.

Is anyone hearing circus music yet?

No one bothered to call me to see if my internet speed had improved. It was still SLOW.

I started taking a series of Verizon (and other) internet speed tests. They all showed the same results. Very early in the morning and very late at night, the download speeds were reasonable at about 1 mbps. As the day went on, and traffic increased, the speed degraded to ridiculously low levels e.g. 11 kbps.

Given the data pattern, I believe that the Verizon network is bandwidth limited, and cannot support the service that I am purchasing. It is now June 24 (ten days since I opened a trouble ticket) I still continue to call every day now armed with a very obvious statistical data pattern of internet speed, and Verizon still wants to troubleshoot my equipment.

I am switching to another ISP. It is too much trouble having Verizon as a "provider".

    My Other Reviews·Fairpoint Communic..
I lost my 512/512 SDSL service in early 2001. Initially none of my phone lines were qualified. Tried to get Verizon to swap one of the lines to unused SDSL line, no go. Even managed to talk to a person in the engineering department to find out why the lines were not qualified, still no go. Found out about Presidential appeals from BBR. Called morning of 6/27/01 by the afternoon all three lines were qualified. They even gave me the ranking. Distance was 11,800 feet. This agrees with the previous SDSL length of 10,500, since the SDSL ISP had ~ 1,000 feet of bridged tap removed.

Ordered 1500/384 package on the web for $79.95. I telecommute so upload speed is important. This was half the price I was paying for SDSL. Activation was scheduled for 8/7. In NH Verizon only offers PPPoE with dynamic address allocation.

I decided to use a POTS/DSL splitter rather then microfilters. Splitter minimizes effects of inside wiring. Ordered a splitter from a contact here at BBR. Installed splitter and secondary surge suppressors for added protection. Everything was ready for the big day.

7/27/01 Verizon requires use of MS PPTP VPN and a customized Netscape browser for initial configuration and WinPoet PPPoE, to simulate a dialup connection. I did not intend to use WinPoet as I have a router. I loaded the Verizon install CD on a spare PC, connected it to Westell B90 modem. Install was pretty uneventful. Transferred PPPoE setting to Multitech RouteFinder router. It logged on without a hitch. Setup Usenet and Verizon email account. I have a hosted domain and use my own SMTP server for outgoing mail rather then Verizon.

11/18/01 UPDATE: I downgraded from 1500/384 to 768/128 on 10/26 with an effective date of 11/16. Sure enough on 11/16 speed was reduced. Typical DSL Reports speed test is now 705/110Kbp/s.

4/14/2002 UPDATE: as other's reported upload speed has increased. Typical upload is now 130Kbps up from 110. Nice 20% increase.

7/26/2002 UPDATE: One-year anniversary with Verizon. DSL service has been extremely reliable with only a few short outages caused by internal routing or authentication problems never DSL circuit itself. Speed is consistent. They have resolved the outgoing mail issue but that does not affect me since I use my own domain. All in all I’m very happy with the service.

10/10/2002 UPDATE: Verizon offered new version of the 768/128 plan at $39.95 month with one-year contact. Converted account saving $10 month.

5/2/2003 UPDATE: DSL is now $34.95 for "basic" plan 1500/128 if 12,000 feet or less from the CO or 768/128 if not. Called Monday to sign up for new speed plan at lower cost. Friday line was upgraded getting 1400/130. Nice to get a speed enhancement and price reduction.

8/6/2003 UPDATE: Two-year anniversary with Verizon ADSL. Recently had an outage, modem would sync but not connect. After much troubleshooting by Verizon and myself turned out we had two corroded telephone receptacles causing a partial short between line 1 and 2 (DSL). Surprisingly this has no effect on voice quality. Lesson learned: always check inside wiring first. This would have saved being on dialup for several days and a service call from Verizon. Reliability and speed have been great. Occasional slowdowns during peak times but still very usable.

8/24/2004 UPDATE: This is my three-year anniversary with Verizon ADSL. Service has been very stable. The only problem has been occasional DNS slow downs.

I called Verizon to get the 1500/384 speed upgrade. That would bring me back to the same speed I had three years ago when I first signed up. Unfortunately I’m one of the many Verizon customers that have experienced significant line length growth. When I called I was told I did not qualify because my distance was 17,000 feet. New distance is 5,000 feet more then when I first signed up.

12/1/2004 UPDATE: DNS has been kind of an on again off again problem with Verizon. I opted to run my own DNS server on an always-on PC used as a network file server. That seems to have solved the DNS problem.

3/22/2005 UPDATE: “Basic” DSL service was increased to $37.95 without 1-year contract and $29.95 with.

7/14/2005 UPDATE: This is my four-year anniversary with Verizon ADSL service. Figured I would try for the speed upgrade again to get back to the same speed I had when I first signed up, 1500/384. Called Verizon and after the customary 20 minute hold time spoke to a rep. Told her I wanted to take advantage of the lower price, $29.95, by going on a 1-year contract but before I did that I wanted to get back to the same speed I had when I first signed up. Rep took the change order. I was skeptical but sure enough as of today I’m back to 1500/384.

7/13/2006 UPDATE. This is my five-year anniversary. 1500/384 service has been very stable, with occasional DNS hiccups.

Postings on VOL thread here at BBR indicated Verizon increased distance for given speed package. Called to see if I qualify for 3000/768 plan. Was told no because they show me at 17,495 feet. That is frustrating because in the five years I've had DSL wire distance varied from a minimum of 11,800 to maximum of 17,500. As far as I know neither my home nor the phone lines have changed over that period.

7/13/2007 UPDATE: This is my six-year anniversary. 1500/384 service has been very stable. In what is now an annual ritual when I renew my annual contract I ask if I qualify for higher speed plan, answer was again no. There was some confusion with billing. Had been billed in arrears now billing period is same a phone bill. I must have missed the notice. When I called rep apologized for the confusion and that while I did not qualify for higher speed she said as a long time DSL customer should could give me the six month introduction price of $19.99 going to $29.99 for rest of year.

Replaced Westell B90 modem with Netopia 3346 modem/router combo. The Netopia modem supports ADSL2/ADSL2+ that improves performance over long lines. Verizon is not advertising ADSL2 but assumed newer DSLAM support it. Unfortunately modem indicates I'm not on a newer DSLAM.

6/23/2008 UPDATE: This is my seven-year anniversary as a DSL customer. Verizon sold VT/NH/ME to FairPoint Communication.
