On 9/11, I called Verizon to upgrade from a 768k down plan to anything faster, and was given the options of 1M at $19.99, 3M at $29.99, and 7.1M at $39.99. I went for the 7.1M plan because I was told by the sales rep that FiOS was not yet available in my area.

I was sent a new modem and was told that my service would be up and running on 9/17. I checked that morning and noticed that my speeds were greatly improved, from 768k to roughly 2.9M. I should note that this speed was being achieved with the Westell 6110F modem that was sent to me in July when Verizon upgraded some of the servers in my area.

When I got home, I switched over to the modem that was sent to me, the Westell 6100G to see if that would bring me up to the 7.1M that I had ordered. After letting the modem boot, I was not connecting at all. I called Verizon's tech support and did the usual routine of having them power the modem down and booting it back up, then them doing a line test.

They said that they'd need to run a 24 hour test and that they'd give me a call to see if I'd need a tech to come over to see what was going on. I didn't receive any calls by the next evening, so I unplugged the 6100 and went back to the 6110 and did a quick check to see what speed I was getting, and I was getting roughly 3.9M down.

After a week I decided to plug the 6100 back in again and I still wasn't getting any connections with that modem so I called tech support again, and again with the same routine of needing to do a 24 hour test. This time I did get a call from their tech service Friday 9/25 department and they notified me that signal for 7.1 was running 10k feet through 26 gauge wire. They also told me that they were sending a tech to come over.

A tech was dispatched the following Monday and after he checked the phone jack and the new modem, he had me up and running again, and when I did a speed test, I was getting roughly 3M down. It wasn't the ~4M I was getting the week before, but I was back online after being down for five days.

On 9/30, I called the Billing department to get credited for the days I was down, and to also see if I could get switched over to the 3M plan since that was the speed I was getting. They said that the switch would be ok and that I'd be paying the lower price. I got home that evening and did another speed test only to find out that my speed had now dropped to 1.5M down. After rebooting the modem in hopes that that would bring me back up to 3M, my internet connection dropped.

I gave tech support a call the morning of 10/1 to get me back online and after asking why I was only getting 1.5M when I was on the 3M plan, I was told that the 3M plan was actually 1.5M up to 3M. I then asked if there was anything I could do to get my speed back to what it was and they said to call the billing department and to have me switch back to the faster speed plan.

I called the billing department later that morning while I was at work, and told them of my ordeals so far. After doing another check, they came back to me and told me that 1.5M was the fastest speed available in the area. I told them that was impossible because two days prior I was getting speeds of 3M down. The lady kept insisting that it was the fastest speed and I didn't want to settle with that so I asked to speak to a supervisor.

After being on hold for at least 5 minutes, I was speaking to another representative and told her everything. She did the checks again and tried to tell me also that 1.5 was the fastest speed possible. I again told her that wasn't possible and that I was getting faster speeds prior to all my tech support calls. She then said that she'd need to talk to someone from the Central Office about my situation. When she came back on the line, she said that she'd transfer me to someone at the Central Office and I could speak to them.

After another 5 minutes or so on hold, I finally got to speak to someone at the Central Office about my connection speeds. I asked if I could go back to the 7.1M plan and the rep said that she'd look into it and she'd give me a call later in the day. She also told me that the service wouldn't be up and running until the next evening.

So far, I haven't gotten a call from her yet and my connection's still at 1.5M. I'm going to give tech support another call to follow up on this. I'll update as info comes in.

*EDIT* 10/3: I gave another call to Verizon's tech support to get a follow up on the return to 7.1M. The tech support representative was very helpful this time around. He noted that I had a lot of notes regarding my switch, and after giving him some information and letting him know that I was able to get 4M down from the very start, he went and contacted their technicians. He went and created a new ticket to get a follow up with the techs going and he said that they would contact me tomorrow. Hopefully I'll receive a call this time around, even though they would be calling me on a Sunday.

*EDIT* 10/6: I gave Verizon's tech support a call to get an update on the trouble ticket that I had opened and the CSR on the other end who didn't even give me a name told me that the ticket had been closed. Again I was told that 1.5M was the fastest speed I could get and that if I went with a higher speed I'd suffer from intermittent connections and whatnot. I told the rep that I'd be happy with 4M down on an intermittent connection rather than have to deal with the 1.5M speed knowing full well that I was getting 4M originally. The CSR gave me the number to the FiOS office since I told him I was originally running on the fios.verizon.net service instead of the current dsl-w.verizon.net service. I'll update again after I give them a call in the morning.

I have had a similar, even worse, experience with Verizon. I was totally blocked out by phone circles and could not talk to anyone with experience, courtesy and common sense. And with the ability to give real customer service. I contacted Rep.Waxman's office 10/7 to register a complaint as I have no choice but Verizon in 310 area code. Verizon is worse then the Bank's overdraft or credit card scams. Contact Waxman's office.

order/install was fine. I got a free Westell VersaLink627W wireless 4port router/modem. I have 1.5m speed package. I get mediocre pings, 1.47 mbps, .37 Mbps. The modem you first use you HAVE TO ALWAYS USE. The DSL servers use MAC filtering.

Verizon provides pretty reliable DSL service.
However Verizon no longer provides usenet service,
as of October 1, 2009. This is an odd omission for an ISP.

My original installation was a bit rocky. The DSL installation included some
software that does not work correctly. Specifically, the program MotiveSB.exe
causes other applications to crash (examples: Quicken, and PKZip).

I do not like Verizon installing "invasive" software, which changed my home
page and put a bunch of icons in the links tray.

Email support is missing, which is bad. Chat support is offered, which is good.

The service is great phone and dsl package. However i have the hardest time paying my bill.I forgot my login and password. So i called support after being transfered 7 times and 2hrs later still no fix.The next day i call support again to try to make a payment and well they like to charge a convenice fee of 3.50 whats going on here i asked her.I asked her where i can make a payment at she informed me there was no autherized pay station in my area. The funny thing is they (verizion) operates in three countys here swain, jackson, and graham and they dont have an autherized pay station.Go figure right lol.I fount a radio shack were you can pay your bill because i couldnt login to my account online to pay.so i paid my bill.Nine days later my dsl goes out so i called tech support in india and stayed on the phone with them for an hour unpluging reseting and flipping the phone cord around.(he wouldnt move on to the next step till i did this ) so finally he hung up on me.After calling i finally got an answer my payment never posted to my account. They cut my dsl off I called radio shack and they confirmed they had made the trasaction they gave me a conformation number.I then called verizion back and Wow it just had posted to the account. Bottom line is why dose this company charge you to pay your bill on time while vonage dosnt charge you or directv or dish network and why did i have to go through all this just to pay my bil

Update 9/30/09: What happened? Slow download speeds (9% of what I paid for).
Non existent tech support, everything always looks good from their end. When and if you get an appointment to have someone out to the house they endlessly reschedule until the trouble ticket disappears. Find an alternative, I went with Comcast, so far so good!
I no longer recommend Verizon DSL

Update 5/21/04: At Verizon's estimate of 9000ft. from the CO I had no problem getting the free upload upgrade-1500/384 and the price downgrade to $29.95 a month. Speed is now rock solid at 1495/370. I haven’t had any problems at all with my service and still highly recommend Verizon Online.

Update 11/4/06: Upgraded to 3/768 over a year ago for the same price as original order. Never any trouble with the service, still recommended.

Update 6/9/07: Nothing has changed, great service at a great price & still highly recommended!

FIOS isn't available in my area, dial up or Comcast were my only choices.

The problems of moving locations have been solved by the personal attention of a supervisor. I have his cell phone no. and phone him if there's a problem (as there often is when we move back and forth). I'd sign up for FIOS if I could get it in both places. But our summer home is probably too "rural" for Verizon to service with fiber; they push Direct TV in that area. (Our TV reception in 13224 is fine with an antenna, and we don't even have a TV in 02543.) We also don't watch TV much, so we're happy to live with the regular high-speed DSL. We started out in both locations with Westell modems. The supervisor helped us replace them with Actiontec wireless modems a year ago. When we travel abroad for 4-6 weeks in the spring, we save money by suspending all service except my email. I chose DSL over cable, when both became available some years ago, because we live quite close to our switch in 13224. With different cable cos. serving 13224 and 02543, only Verizon DSL allows us to connect in both locations with a single provider. Of course, there were a few years when we lost DSL in the summer and had to make do with dial-up (at a reduced rate).

In August 2003 DSL became available in my small town – finally! I went with the first available provider (not Verizon) at the time and used them for about 14 months. They were a local company and the service was rock solid. They could not compete with the pricing from Verizon, especially when you include the phone service & long distance package deals.

On Nov 8, 2004 I upgraded from 1.5mb to 3mb DSL, switching from the local vendor to Verizon.

I'm happy with my switch so far. I’m saving money and have faster service. I tried my best to stay with my old local DSL provider but they just could not compete with the price. At this point I’m happy I switched.

Update: March 31, 2009 - I called Verizon yesterday to ask about 7mb DSL. It is available in my area and they said they'd give it to me for no extra cost. I said go for it.

Update: September 2009 - turned out the 7mb DSL was not the same price and when I called back they refused to give me what they originally offered me. Since April I have had to call back to get several products removed that were "crammed" on my bill. They kept putting things on my bill that I did not ask for. I guess all those Comcast flyers in the mail finally got me to think about them. On Sept 19th I switch my voice and internet over to Comcast. Good Bye Verizon. One less voice AND DSL customer on their books. I guess VZ was hurting for cash and figured they can throw some charges on people's bills and they won't notice it. I guess this makes VZ a couple extra million bucks a month. Well not this customer.
