After quite a long period of problematic disconnects, my DSL has gone back to rock solid since 5/29/09. Only 2 disconnects have occurred since then. Can't say for sure that is what fixed it, but I did see techs spending a good part of a day working out at my DSLAM 1/2 mile away.
My modem and local loop (at the house and down our private road) were not touched.. The local loop connections inside the telco cab/DSLAM which may have been worked on.. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Local DSL Loop work just fine, but very frequent disconnects.
AT&T BellSouth is no longer in the rock solid category... There are periods that it is rock solid and then there will be periods (mostly weekends) that reoccuring PADT commands are sent to knock down connection....
Since my DSL modem is set up to automatically reconnect, it does so.. but sometimes it continually cycles through connects/disconnect sequences.. and then it will run rock solid other times..
I have IP address monitoring software so I have date and time stamps every time they knock down the dynamic IP connection.

Service has been great, no issues. Thought about Comcast but I knew that the DSL would be reliable so I went with that, may switch to save money but I'm very happy with the service.

Update 6/29/09 - Still ATT free. Ya'll can stop sending me those post cards addressed to "educated consumer". I've educated myself well enough to find better deals and service elsewhere.
Update 7/22/07 - ATT you suck!!!! My dry line DSL has been down for two weeks because you won't show up at the scheduled meeting between you and the CLEC
Update 5/15/07 - Still Bellsouth (AT&T) free... I got my father do drop Bellsouth since he only uses his cellphone for voice and was paying them nearly $65 per month for landline service and dialup. Now using local cable co for internet at $29 a month.Hey AT&T. When you start offering data without having to have POTS in the Atlanta area, I'll stop moving my friends and family over to services that betterfit their needs.
Update 12/17/06 - I've been Bellsouth free at my place for a few years now and disconnected their lines at my in-laws place right at a year ago today. I would have liked to have kept their DSL over there but not being able to get it without POTS is a deal breaker for me. They use their cell phones 90% of the time thus rendering a land line virtually useless. Charter cable and the Sunrocket 2 year for $199 VOIP has been a good replacement at a much better price.
Update 9/14/05 - Well I had Bellsouth DSL put in at my in-laws place. I'm pleased with their pricing now as it seems more competitive and speed choices are somewhat better. After two weeks it has shown to be fairly reliable and for a generic residential account they will be satisfied.
I would like to see more choices in reagards to business class DSL. Still can't figure out why they charge nearly $300 for a 768/512 ADSL line when I can get a 6000/768 line from Comcast for $95 or a 6000/768 dry line DSL package from several Covad resellers for under $100 also.
This is in 2001...
March 16th - Ordered DSL service
March 23rd - Line provisioned. Already had ethernet modem in hand. Connected and was good to go. Now I can't receive phone calls on line DSL is connected to. Place call to POTS service for repair.
March 24th - Phone fixed. No sync on DSL. Call DSL repair and go through the hoops over phone. I'm not a monkey so don't put me in that circus again. Schedule contractor to come out and inspect.
March 29th - Contractor comes out and tells me there is no sync at the house. No joke buddy. That's what I told them over the phone. He said he was going to roll a truck tomorrow. Thanks buddy, that's what I asked for in the first place.
March 30th - Truck rolled. Sync again and surfing.
April 12th - Phone goofing up again. Call POTS service for repair. Appointment scheduled for today, April 13th.
April 13th - 10:00am - DSL sync goes down. 10:12am - Get call from POTS tech telling me phone is repaired. Let him know he disconnected my DSL and requested him to reconnect. He informs me that isn't his job and I would have to call DSL support. Come on man. He disconnected it, he should put it back. Contact DSL support. Tell them the story and they still guide me through the hoops. I repeat... I'm not a monkey so leave me out of this circus.... They make decision to roll truck to NID to check for sync. This of course after checking my computer for a half hour. What idiots..... Of course the repair will be next week sometime. They tear the system up in two minutes but I have to wait a week to get repaired. Give me a break. This system has operated a total of two weeks out of the month and I am probably expected to pay full price....
April 14th - 12:30pm - Well my 8:00am to 12:00pm window has come and gone. Haven't seen BS, haven't heard from BS and will likely never see BS today. My odds are that it won't get repaired until mid week.....
April 14th - 4:15pm - Well service is back. I had to put a lot of heat on Bellsouth phone repair to get them to repair what they broke. I knew that if I had to wait on the helpdesk for support is was going to be another week. Kudos to the nice DSL repair tech that came out and fixed it and for volunteering a number to contact real DSL support in south Florida when this happens again. She let me know that this has been an ongoing battle. The POTS technicians just disconnect customers without contacting DSL for reason or assistance. The POTS technician that was out here last week told me the same thing. If they do a repair, they disconnect the DSL, repair the line and walk away. Not their concern. I feel bad for the nice lady at BS phone repair but complacency doesn't always get the job done with them. I had to pull out some strong words before she would get me to someone useful. Next time the phone goes out I'll leave it out. I'm going wireless......
Update 8/5/03 - Bellsouth is GONE. Switched to Britsys (Worldcom reseller) and got a 1500/768 w/ static IP for LESS that what Bellsouth was charging me for 256/128 best effort service.
Update 5/23/05 - Bellsouth is still gone. DSL from Britsys (now DNS-LLC.com) still rock sold and twice as fast as anything Bellsouth offers. Now on a dry line also so Bellsouth POTS is history. So now I've got a 6000/768 dry line DSL and VOIP with unlimited calling for less than Hellsouths 3.0meg plan and ther unlimited long distance phone service.

| stop whining Haha, you're blaming AT&T because you went througha CLEC. It is the CLEC's job to coordinate the repair, and of course they'll blame AT&T/BellSouth everytime, who wouldn't? Why not switch to dry line DSL direct through AT&T and stop whiing about it? I bet your customer service will increase. -- **Disclaimer** My views represent only what the voices in my head tell me. | |

I pay for extreme 6.0. Speeds used to be good all the time. In the last 6 months, getting worse and worse and inconsistent. I just cannot deal with the Indian call center any more. I just do not have the strength to deal with unplugging my router, putting my DSL modem back in DHCP mode, hooking up a single lap top etc. etc. etc. They have worn me out.

| Inferior AT&T (Death Star) Transit You know if AT&T aka Death Star is foolish enough to deploy bandwidth cap and try to enforce metered billing then just call them and tell them "FU" and drop every service you have with them and make others that you know do the same. They already have an outdated joke infrastructure that cable beat back in 2002 and best they can offer is 6mbps and 512kbps. | |

Well, it's been a good ride with very few problems. Since I had some tree damage to the drop I now have slowdowns during rain, but not always.
Still have crawling speed when thunderstorms are around.

I've had BellSouth DSL (3Mbps) for 8 years without complaint, used for remote office and VOIP (via Vonage) Telephony services. I recently was forced to down grade due to cost constraints from my company.
Naked DSL is now available from AT&T (who bought out BellSouth 2 years ago). I downgraded to 768Kbps and the DL speed of 768 is fine. My big complaint with AT&T is their website shows an UL speed of 384Kbps for DSL w/o Phone line. As it turns out, that is for other markets and NOT the Southeast. Here, service seems to still be under the BellSouth website moniker. In any event, the UL speed for basic DSL is only 128 Kbps - which is not sufficient for quality VOIP.
My choices are to upgrade back to 3Mbps service (to get 384 Kbps UL) or switch to Comcast. Overall, there is not enough competition in the southeast to provide us with quality service an reasonable rates. I say this because my co-workers in other parts of the country have access to good basic DSL speeds for low cost ($20-30/mo) or very high speeds (meaning Fios) for equal cost ($50-60/mo).
BTW, the bundle packages are all very expensive when discussing VOIP. Even an standard landline for phone service is more expensive than Vonage.

I have had BS fastaccess since June of 2000. It was a reletively new service back then, but I experienced only a few bumps at the start. The advertised speed is 1.5Mbps down/upload 256Kbps. My speed stays steady at about 1200/218. Most of the trouble I had was related to the USB modem I started out with. That was rectified when I switched to a more reliable ethernet Modem.
It is the only option I have in this area until Comcast installs around here but considering the little downtime I have experienced, I will most likely stick with Bellsouth.
Update: 6/21/2004
I recently upgraded to Xtreme DSL with Bellsouth. It was a smooth transition. They first upgraded me to a static IP and days later upgraded to 3.0Mbps Down/upload 385Kbps. My speed is steady at 2450/320. I haven't had any noticable problems.
Update: 6/19/2009
It's been a while since my last BS update. Well, can't call it BS anymore since AT&T took over. Nonetheless, a few things have changed since my last review. I moved, but only a mile and a half from my previous address. I'm now a little farther from the CO but not considerably. The connection has been reliable except for a few weeks where my connection was flapping on and off. Team BS did have some trouble finding the problem but ultimately did correct the issue. They were persistent and the link has been reliable ever since. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade to 6 Mbps since this area cannot handle it. Not sure how long before AT&T upgrades the phone lines in my neighborhood.

UPDATE: So where am I? same place where I was when I wrote this. So much for useless U-Verse maybe by 2019 ill see it when everyone is rocking true fiber and Death Star is still trying to patch the chicken wire copper to milk it for everything its worth.
Other than reliable connection for service uptime AT&T/BellSouth offers nothing special for the price the tier being advertised. Don't forget AT&T's low priority in developing and deploying fiber based transit to meet the need of current consumers as their static modem stuck in 2000.
If AT&T does establish CAP in residential ADSL circuit then ill just totally drop all my service with them and move on another company most likely Comcast. Now I have had ADSL service from late 2002 with BellSouth and now AT&T and so far they done nothing to improve or upgrade the upstream other than increase useless downstream.
Now I have 6/month's promotional offer from AT&T which gives me 2 x ($10.00) discount on my current bill. Which brings it to $22/month for 6 months from $42. When the promotional offer is over I am most likely to cancel my ADSL-HSI and move on Comcast-HSI as even they offer 1-3mbps upstream.
PS: Don't even bring U-verse BS here as its useless and won't see it till 2012. Also it doesn't even come close to Verizon's FiOS or Comcast's DOCSIS. AT&T's will soon find itself in deep water as more and more user just switch to their competitors as they refuse to upgrade to their POS U-verse which is doomed to begin with.

| DOCSIS 3.0 vs U-Verse I understand your frustration, I live in Apt Complex where the fiber terminates to my DSLAM about 50 yards where I'm sitting right now and I'm synced at 8000k and 512k up. There are a lot of financial/technical hybrids that are in love with milking as much out of this copper infrastructure which is only delaying the inevitable. Like Alexander Gramm Bells technology, copper had a good run and its time to recycle it. However, I disagree with your comparison to U-Verse (VDSL2) vs DOCSIS (3.0) its going to be close but not decisive. The fundamental flaw with DOCSIS is CSMA-CD, the shared architecture, and most cable companys lack of distance infrastructure. The faster you clock a CSMA-CD link, you lose proportionally more throughput due to the back-off timers and the listen timers. While yes were going to see hudge advertised link speeds with DOCSIS 3.0 youre on average limited to 70% of that link and that is if youre the ONLY person on that link. So take your 300 meg bonded channel connection, take 70% of it (210) and share that with a couple hundred neighbors. Where as VDSL, yes you loose bandwidth as your distance increases from the DSLAM, but youre going to stay around 100 megs just for you. Then you take away CSMA-CD and all of the backoff timers and jitter from that type of link, and you have a low latency reliable connection. The Cable companies are just going to lure you in with big numbers and hope you don't use it. But none of this helps you right now, ADSL (original spec) is the new dial-up and its quite pathetic that many customers are still limited to it. I was in the military for a while so I can tell you first hand that writing your congressman can work. Ive seen direct, decisive action taken after a letter was written to a congressman, and write the FCC as well. In my opinion the FCC should be limited to managing the radio spectrum and if someone runs copper/fiber lines, thats their property and it shouldnt be taxed. | |
