AT&T is getting ridiculous. Caps are supposed to be implemented soon, on an already slow connection. Get with the times, AT&T. Please.

Caps, etc

Well said. My AT&T DSL is adequate now but its a little pricey for what I get. Caps and/or metering will kill it for me at least until AT&T lowers the monthly bill some.

Inferior AT&T (Death Star) Transit

You know if AT&T aka Death Star is foolish enough to deploy bandwidth cap and try to enforce metered billing then just call them and tell them "FU" and drop every service you have with them and make others that you know do the same. They already have an outdated joke infrastructure that cable beat back in 2002 and best they can offer is 6mbps and 512kbps.

I have had BS fastaccess since June of 2000. It was a reletively new service back then, but I experienced only a few bumps at the start. The advertised speed is 1.5Mbps down/upload 256Kbps. My speed stays steady at about 1200/218. Most of the trouble I had was related to the USB modem I started out with. That was rectified when I switched to a more reliable ethernet Modem.

It is the only option I have in this area until Comcast installs around here but considering the little downtime I have experienced, I will most likely stick with Bellsouth.

Update: 6/21/2004

I recently upgraded to Xtreme DSL with Bellsouth. It was a smooth transition. They first upgraded me to a static IP and days later upgraded to 3.0Mbps Down/upload 385Kbps. My speed is steady at 2450/320. I haven't had any noticable problems.

Update: 6/19/2009

It's been a while since my last BS update. Well, can't call it BS anymore since AT&T took over. Nonetheless, a few things have changed since my last review. I moved, but only a mile and a half from my previous address. I'm now a little farther from the CO but not considerably. The connection has been reliable except for a few weeks where my connection was flapping on and off. Team BS did have some trouble finding the problem but ultimately did correct the issue. They were persistent and the link has been reliable ever since. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade to 6 Mbps since this area cannot handle it. Not sure how long before AT&T upgrades the phone lines in my neighborhood.

Ok I had DSL xtreme for a good 2 years or so.But first lets go back in time, about to years ago my download was roughly 70 KB/s and Upload a good 60 KB/s.You see I never knew I had the fastest AT&T connection, so just the other day I was thinking about upgrading. Because I was getting sick and tired of slow speeds. So I went on the AT&T site and to my surprise I couldn't upgrade the reason being I had the fastest! I was so shocked I had called them up faster than a heartbeat. And they ran a speed test, and the tech had almost cursed. She instantly went to go see whats wrong, and they reset my profile, and I went up to a good 90 KB/s, and she said that their will be a tech the next day, so he came and did some stuff, and he said he got to 6 Mbps, but the wiring in my house is messed up so, only he said only i can only get 3 Mbps, So I ran a speed test and I got only roughly under 2 Mbps. So i called back again, and they said the tech said something bad wiring. And he is saying the truth, so their going to send a level two tech to fix the wiring for free. And they gave me credit so free service for a good month or so. So let see what happens tomorrow

*UPDATE* tech fixed everything and now i'm getting 5 and a half megs. So im okay with that.

I had SETEL for 2 years before ATT came out they were good, just very costly and I could not surf after 9pm due to someone slamming the bandwidth. ATT was a long overdue upgrade, I just wish the local techs and the main office would get together and have it offered as soon as it cones online. I had bugged the local phone workers for 6 months I was like a stalker trying to get the main office to see the box was live. The modem came after the install so I was without internet for close to 2 nights, with teenage kids it was ugly.

I was limited to the 3.0 service since they would sign off on the 6.0, but the speed is dead on during my test the Tech maxed out at 9.6, and 368 so I see they could not hit the upload speed but its all good.

Have had what is now called Ultra for several years. Has been pretty reliable with few problems. Did have to have a noise profile applied after lightening struck nearby. This was result of a service call - the tech in my area actually cares. Now getting max of 1,300+ and average of about 1,180 Mbps - not bad at about 17,000 ft from the CO.

Price has dropped from $49 /mo to $32.95 with all the bundle deals.

Speed now consistently averaging in the low 1,400s. Not sure what is different.

Wish AT&T would quit offering me speeds they cannot deliver. The low lifes have now redefined their speed tiers so that now they can charge you to go back to your old tier.

I ordered AT&T DSL service and switched from Charter HSI and Sunrocket VOIP in December of 2006. The ordering process was pretty easy but it took 3 weeks for them to port my number away from Sunrocket. And when my number did port and my landline started working, they had set my service up on the wrong port card. I was set up for the DSL Ultra service and was paying for Extreme 3.0.
After a few hours they finally got it upgraded correctly after sending a tech out.
I March of 2007 DSL Extreme 6.0 came to my area so I promptly upgraded. It took about 2 days and my speeds were upgraded. Now since I live less than 1/4 mile away from the DSLAM my speeds are very stable. The quality of the phone service is a different story though.
I am just waiting for AT&T to replace the switch in my area with a digital one and maybe the fiber. Gotta love my wishful thinking.

Update : 05/20/09

I have dropped AT&T finally for Charter HSI and Phone and I ams very pleased. Call quality is much better and internet speeds are higher. I am getting 10 MB now. I just couldn't wait another god know how long for UVERSE.

att has be using contractors heavily now for about 6 months. they are willing to lose customers to meet there bottom line...revenue!! they want MORE profit. it's a 250 billion dollar corp but still not enough. totally concentrating in uverse. dsl as we know it not important and nothing planned to maintain old technology. hopefully uverse gets here on time or else.... stare at the wall.

Made the move to ATT from Comcast solely on the inability of Comcast to correct my audio problems for my HDTV. Although I have the Extreme 6 ATT package it is about half of what I had with Comcast. Not really noticeable until you download a large file. Up-time has been flawless. Been on about a month and the only issues I had were self-inflicted, gotta tweak you know. Not much else to say. When you are happy with a product, it usually makes for a short review. I would recommend this product.

Changed from RR during whole cap and tiers fiasco (guess I'm the rat jumping offf the ship cause the tiers will come back). AT&T can only offer 3 down, but it is consistent. I live in college neighborhood with a number of RR customers and it would slow down immensely at times, no such problems with DSL. Self install was easy, but software sent didn't work with Vista x64. Got discount for having POTS and AT&T long distance. Don't notice the speed difference when streaming video.

A nice bonus since I'm a sports fan is access to ESPN360.

Going a little slower online was worth the savings.

I considered using RoadRunner, but I don't really care for Time Warner as a company, and BellSouth was cheaper (and I didn't have Time Warner Cable either). My experience with BellSouth goes back to around August 2007.

Originally, I got DSL Lite at 1Mbps, then later upgraded to Ultra at 1.5Mbps, then recently upgraded to Extreme at 3Mbps. I may upgrade to 6Mbps at some time in the future.

I ordered the self install package, and waited about 3 days for the package to arrive with the modem in it. Before the package arrived, a technician called and left a message to the effect that the line had been tested and should be fine for installation. When the package came, I set up the modem (Westell 6100) pretty easily, even though I didn't use the Bellsouth install CD. I set it up with a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and was fully online within about 30 minutes.

About a year later, I kept getting modem desyncs, and noise on voice calls (especially after a good rainstorm). It turned out that my phone line on the telco side of the station protector had degraded (my house was built in 1982) and roots had gotten to the line, allowing moisture to get in and play havoc. 611 sent a technician out and they replaced my line and upgraded my station protector to a modern TNI box. After that, all was well again. I was very pleased with how well that issue was handled.

One thing that kind of irks me though is that my parents still can't get DSL where they live. They live about 1.5 miles from me, but are on a different SLIC which has apparently never been upgraded.

I get the speed that is advertised pretty much all of the time. Since recently upgrading to Extreme, I get a pretty consistent average test speed of around 2990 Kb/s. In general, the connection has been more reliable than I would expect.

I also factor into my satisfaction the fact that Bellsouth/AT&T hasn't been quite as evil with their policy decisions as RoadRunner/Time Warner. When I hear about something like the recent ridiculous Time Warner actions in Austin, TX, I'm glad that I am not giving them any of my business.

My most recent speed test is below.

UPDATE 4/25/09: I've had problems the past few months with my DSL dropping after I upgraded to 6.0 (which was a DISASTER) and downgraded to 3.0. Don't know why, but it has stabilized over the past few weeks after I had our central house filter replaced. (must have gone bad) My question is.. why do they let us upgrade to 6.0 (and ask us to) if our lines can't handle it? o.O

Let's start from when we first got their service-- that's when it first became available in our area. My neighbors and I fought months to get them to allow DSL to be provided in our area. We were stuck with dialup before that. Also, due to the area we are in, (rural) only AT&T/Bellsouth guaranteed service here. Satellite was considered very often by us, but we didn't accept the fact of how much it cost just to have it installed/keeping it active. Therefore, we waited. Anyways, the day they allowed DSL to be purchased, we were up and running with DSL 4 days from the initial order.

As the months and year passed, Hurricane Rita came and hit us, destroying our house. Additionally, due to no phone service, I could not setup a makeshift DSL service line to attempt to access it.

As the month progressed, we were given a FEMA camper to live in for the time being. We called AT&T/Bellsouth to come and hook up the camper with phone and Internet services. It took them a week (at least) to come out and install everything. Some issues arose.. mostly due to our poor line quality at the time.. but they were resolved quickly by AT&T/Bellsouth. After that, we ran DSL with no issues at all, but we did attempt to get Fastaccess 6.0, but it was not allowed in the area due to the line quality.

Finally, we got a new house and had AT&T/Bellsouth come back and install a new line system yet again. They didn't charge us anything for wiring or installing whatever needed to be installed, due to the hurricane. Anyways, this time it took 4 days for them to come and install, but it worked right after he finished the job. I was up and running with DSL yet again, however, we again tried 6.0, but we reached the limit for the area (5.4 mbps down, 433 kbps up), which caused DSL sync to be lost once we reached that limit. Therefore, we are now straying away from those speeds.

In all, AT&T/Bellsouth did a fantastic job as we were a customer. We made it harder for them than how hard they made it for us. AT&T/Bellsouth has been our best phone/Internet/long distance provider, and it'll stay that way for a long time from now.

Quick fact about our service:
- Our maximum speed package is Fastaccess 3.0, due to line quality.
- We have a Westell (black) modem.
- We had AT&T/Bellsouth come and reinstall service three times now.
- Overall, the order process was great.. I used their online system, not phone system.
- We pay $37.95, which includes a discount for bundling. (regular is $42.95)
- Earthlink is the only other DSL provider for our area.
