Well, it's been a good ride with very few problems. Since I had some tree damage to the drop I now have slowdowns during rain, but not always.

Still have crawling speed when thunderstorms are around.

Update. Finally got a home run installed and fixed the slowdown during wet weather. Back to a happy camper.
Still going strong. Service slow at night for a week or so but fixed now. Still a h
appy camper.

Still good service. 04/13/2012.

I had 6 meg cable broadband that cost me $45/month and never used the bandwidth!

I ordered AT&T's 768 "DSL Lite w/ term agreement" the day it became available.
(term agreement is 12 months, with a $50 early termination fee)

The $75 DSL modem/router & install kit came 3 days later.

I used the DSL splitter in the self-install kit to separate voice and DSL lines outside at the customer interface, so I don't need to use DSL filters on the phones inside.

I get about 650 down and 100 up.

I plan on keeping this as long as it remains $10/month, which is at least through 12/31/2009.

UPDATE:

Price raised to $20 in early 2010 - still only 768KB.

Will probably dump this for cable ($30/month for 6 months) or Clear WiMax ($40/month).

UPDATE:

Still using as of summer 2011.

1.5 down for $15/month.

Rock solid reliable, but slow (looks like no one locally can get more than 1.5 down, probably because of U-Verse coming)

UPDATE:

Still using as of spring 2012.

They still offer it for $15/month (up to 3MBps down)

My line still only provisions for 1.5, but I'll keep it forever as long as I can get this price (it now looks like U-Verse will NEVER come to this area)

2 Feb 12 - ATT wifi would not work right with my new Hp all-in-one computer. It dropped connection constantly and speed would drop to dial-up. Messed wtih ATT for 6 months. They said everthing was fine on their end. Finally gave up and ran an ethernet line across my floor and covered it with duct tape. Computer now runs >5K and never drops. Maybe the main computer has to be on the ethernet cable, I don't know. But the speed and solid connection beats hell out of Mediacon, our only other option and which I just canceled because their TV lineup sucked. DSL easily runs all the Netflix I want.

16 Oct 09 - nothing has changed from last post except my zip code.

25 Nov 08. Noticed some complaints about ATT SE on the forum. Not me. I get 5M+ and often 6M any time and have never seen it down. Help desk seems improved but depends a lot on the individual you get. ATT SE is still good value.

07Aug08. Bellsouth is now ATT Southeast. Not much difference. Some annoyances on install but good value and NEVER DOWN (are you listening Mediacom!). Compared to Mediacom, ATT SE is spectacular, so everything in perspective. I have the 6000 down package, and generally get in the high 5000's on my hardwired computer; upstream is 400. My 3 computers on a home wireless network are a little slower, about 3m down, but this is compared to the 300 down these units used to have with Sprint. Aside: Looks like a VRAD box across the street. Pleeeeeeeeze let it happen! Can't wait to dump Mediacom for U-verse.

25Feb07. Sales and tech support SUCK. But, Fastaccess is great! Had to change phone numbers and get new Fastaccess. Ordered 2 Jan 3k/386 home network. Followed up midmonth, New Delhi guy said I was scheduled for mid-June, even though I had a confirmation receipt for 9 Feb. On 12 Feb I did an install and tried to connect; no connect. Called New Delhi; no help; they would send out a tech for $80.. A Bellsouth tech came out 14 Feb and found the first instal to the house a couple of years ago connected Fastaccess to a single jack in a now unused room. Tech did something outside and Fastaccess was up and running nicely. No charge. EXCEPT - I had ordered home newwork, and the other computers would not sync. Called New Delhi again. After about 30 minutes of please-repeat-that-because-I-can't-understand-you, the fellow said my modem didn't support home network. I would have to order home network. Ok, "transfer me to billing, please." Answer, "Yes, I will do that, sir. (pause) Sir, billing is closed. You will have to call back during the week." GRRRRRRRRR.

So, after you get Fastaccess, it's great. Everything up to that sucks bigtime.

****************************************

26Dec06 - Still on 3000/384 hard wire home network. Still works as advertised. Still best deal around.

****************

Three weeks abo put in home networking and upgraded to 3000/384. The first 2wire modem was faulty. BS was remarkably ineffective in figuring that out. On the other hand, one tech was very good at getting 2wire to work on a Windows98 system. So, t's mixed. Also, two computers get all of my family email accounts, but MY account does not come up on MY computer. Maybe it's a Windows98 thing; the other two are XP. Once the bugs are worked out, I still think BS Fastaccess is a good deal.

*********************

I've been on Bellsouth DSL for about two years now and it's still great and still a bargain. I get 1.1M downstream consistently and it's always on. You must, however, 1) avoid the help desk in South Carolina and 2) apply every tweak dslreports suggests.

*********************

The help desk sites in West Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia have been very knowledgeable, and unbelievably patient. At the site in South Carolina, only one out of three has impressed me as knowledgeable; the rest were very polite. If you get a good rep that knows more than a flowchart, you get great service. If not, you're on the phone for a long time.///My Presario 1245/MSW98 notebook kept losing the modem driver. A help desk stepped me through turning off the virus scan, screen saver, etc. This also stopped a problem with losing sync.///The connection was only giving 550/256 at first against advertised "up to 1500/256", but some tweaks from dslreports got that up to 1100/256 rather painlessly. FastAccess really has to be "tuned."///The initial modem, a green thing with two eyes, failed pretty quick. Bellsouth techs came out right away, spent about four hours, and installed a line filter on the house and a different modem, SpeedStream 4060. (Both used the USB.)///SpeedStream worked for three or four months but failed a couple of days ago. Was told it would take 10 to 14 days to get a new one -- wrong! My wife finally muscled her way to a supervisor. Modem is now on overnight delivery. Gotta shove your way past the first tier of help desks and get to the supervisors.///Email addresses are limited to eight characters -- WTF! But, it is very fast and easy to use.///Since I have access to fast Internet at work and our local library, I wasn't interested if 56k. I signed up for ISPChannel though through MediaCom when it came out. There is no numeric value low enough to post how bad that experience was. Words like incompetent, totally wrong, screwed up, dumb as stumpwater, clueless -- just don't come close. I never did get ISPChannel and it was hell anyway. Long after I didn't get it they called and asked my how I liked it! Then Bellsouth put FastAccess in my neighborhood and, despite some difficulties, I'm very satisfied. What they're providing for $49/month is a bargain on my end.

My Other Reviews

·Ellijay Internet
Well after a long time of this asking for my review here goes. Ordered and live the next day. I got my modem and filters off ebay so I didnt get locked into a contract. I am on a extremely long loop so I do not get my full speed but that is understandable since I am nearly 4 miles from the dslam. Techs are great and very helpful. I know all my local techs and when dsl was first set up for me by one of them I knew not to expect the full speed. As it stands I get around 900/228k I can live with this as long as I can game online and download a song or two every once in a while. I have had only one downtime in the last 3 years, and it was due to the fiber feeding our area being cut. I would highly recommend Fastaccess to anyone over cable. Fast and reliable. I now have the westell 6100 modem bridged to a linksys wrt54gx router. The 6100 helped my download speeds by over 200k as before I had the westell 2100.

8-18-2009 Still going strong.

The shared bandwidth aspect of cable used to make ADD'L more appealing. Yet upstream bandwidth loading (Netflix) now impacts everyone. This and pricing of ADSL makes cable appealing. 6Mb ADSL service has been in place for years at $45/mo.

U-Verse sales contractors came through the area 2 years ago and lied about getting data connection w/o tv. Cost me a TELEGRAM to IA to cancel full install. Then the neighborhood never went to U-Verse.

Replaced my issued Westel several times now with my own H/W since Bell/AT&T refused to upgrade me. A ten year old box now.

Update 18jan2012

I broke down after another commercial grade HW failure (dsl modem/router) and replaced all of my NW HW with Cisco boxes; an X2000 modem/router/AP and a dual band E2500 router/AP. The E2500 has a bridged ethernet mode I'm using downstream of the X2000. Wow - the user interface alone is worth the upgrade - consistent 5.4Mb/0.42Mb connection on nodes attached at all points (nine nodes). The HW runs much cooler to the touch. Update in 30 days or less.

I'm a 40y/o PC repair tech so the install was painless and didn't even use their installation software. I ran my own "home-run" direct DSL line years ago.. Since first doing this review I've had 2 of the 2Wire modems crap out. So since AT&T bought out BELL SOUTH, the customer service especially the call centers have went to hell, (still feel that way) and they lowered the speeds across the board trying to compensate for too many users for their current setup.... and they have no intention of upgrading anything until U-VERSE makes it to rural south east KY (10 yrs?) How each night until the data base switches your account to the new settings).

it's great if you don't need tech support..... if you do, try to get to a supervisor or level 2 tech ASAP... all the first level of operators can do is read from a script, and few of them have actual OS knowledge or know anything about setting up a phone so for even a supported product i'd try to get the case escalated that way to can talk to someone who knows what they are talking about (not just reading a script).

Re-upgraded after trying DSL-lite for a few months, but was very unsatisfied with speeds and the ping times in particular. after the DSL Extreme 6.0 became active now my computer seems slow vs the net even using chrome.... maybe time for a reload of the OS. That aside, now i have 40ms ping times up and down the east coast and the mid-west. even though the upload speed is averaging around 420Kbs when advertised as UPTO 512Kbs,,,, but on the WONDERFUL SIDE i'm now on page 1 of AT&T SOUTH.

CORRECTION OF LAST SENTENCE!! now NO WHERE NEAR PAGE 1!!!

when considering bang for the buck, i feel i have the best deal in town.

i don't care what anyone says since it's the only real 1 line DSL option in my area.

i'm on the first page of speed results on a $350 walmart laptop that is over 4 years old but has has many upgrades including a C2D T5750 2gig CPU, 3 Gigs of ram, DL DVD BURNER, atheros 5007G class factory card (the 5008 died but it was fun while it lasted)... now my acer aspire 5315 is decked out with all that and an internal webcam and bluetooth also!! and now finally the internet service can keep up w/ my 3.5 year old technology. too bad the 5008 died now that i can afford a class N Wifi router...

NOW TO SAVE SOME $$ for a good N class ATT compatible DSL modem/router combo.

ATT Bait, Switch, and just don't seem to care.

Don't know if this the right spot to b!tch or not but my current story with AT&T DSL......

End of June I call to get basic DSL service as AT&T advertises constantly for around $15.00/month with 12 month commitment. I don't have high bandwidth needs like some.

I'm told that's not available for my area but "We can offer you our DSL 6.0 for $19.95/month with 12 month commitment-free router included..."

So, I sign up.

Get the first bill at the end of July and it's around $50.00-$60.00. (Looking for it. Recollection currently.) Wonder if there is some B.S. "activation" fee i.e. profit that's attached to it like everything else and that's the reason for the higher bill.

Try to contact by phone and can't get anyone after holding for a long time to make sure I understand all billing. Tried to get them online through their chat system and was told "Please call...the number I had called."

Get the bill for next month. $53.00

Call-Get someone! She's polite and states that the person that took the order did not apply some in-house "promotion" and that's why bills are higher. She informs me that she will apply it and apply credit towards the previous bill. That's the end of August.

September bill comes. $53.00. I stop paying as that's what I'm advised to do by others because when you pay no-one cares. And honestly, I'm thinking some other information is gonna' come showing all of the corrections. Then I'll pay everything to zero.

But nothing comes. I know things are gonna' automatically get switched off. No problem. Happens near the end of October. So the calls begin again with them.

Call. Same story as the original person in August. Some "magical promotion" wasn't applied. And now they are trying to tell me that the originator of the deal could not even offer $19.95 DSL service.

I explain to them that has nothing to do with me whatsoever. And I will gladly pay everything to zero balance for what was quoted to me. We go back and forth. The person completely knows that they are wrong but won't attempt to correct anything or offer any alternative. None. Finally they state that they will "escalate" the ticket and have a manager call me back. This is about a 30 minute phone call by the way. I have the records.

They never call.

I call back the next day. Go through the same scenario. I ask for any manager on the floor. Get someone!

Same broken record. Keeps trying to tell me that 6.0 DSL for the time period costs $53.00/month. I keep telling this person that has nothing to do with what I have been quoted. Nothing. They could charge $5.00/month or $500.00/month for the service at that time and I am still required to pay $19.95/month. Even if it was $5.00/month, I have agreed to pay $19.95/month.

Again, every person in the chain knows that they are wrong. Whenever I prove this too them or put them in a corner they state "Let me put you on hold while I investigate this further." Every time. This "Manager" says the same thing. And then comes back with "You were mistakenly quoted $19.95/month for the time period". So, I've got them right there. They admit to quoting $19.95/month. Any mistake that they claim is their responsibility. I have this on audio with them. I also informed them that they are being recorded in case anyone is thinking of wiretapping laws.

The "Manager" states she will investigate further and "escalate" the ticket again to see what can be done. And then will call back tomorrow. She never called.

So to recap:

Called for basic $14.95/month DSL. Told it wasn't available.

Agreed to $19.95/month 6.0 DSL with free equipment and 12 month commitment.

All bills now reflect charges of $53.00+-/month.

They have admitted that they are wrong, however at this point elect to do nothing. And trust me, I know how this works. They will try to force a 12 month commitment on me as well at this $53.00/month rate. Then the equipment will magically not be free anymore in some way.

At this point, I have spoken to 5 different people and will be calling back tomorrow to discuss this madness. I'll post back all results.

All calls are recorded.

(Posted this in another area. Thought it might be better suited here. Suggestions and/or criticism welcomed.)

Thanks.

Re: ATT Bait, Switch, and just don't seem to care.

Update. Went through the whole process again.

First contact.
Second contact.
Promotions.
Back to billing.
Then to accounting. (I think....lost count of the calls and people...)

FINALLY someone helped me and applied credit towards the account from the beginning. Looked at the information, didn't give arguments, and had a supervisor ok the amount. Wish I had her name to give her credit. Full names can't be given in this department apparently.

Anyway, it appears at this point they have acknowledged their mistakes and are attempting to correct them. We'll see as the future bills come.

Quick recap:

Signed on for $19.95 6.0 DSL with AT&T-free equipment-12 month commitment.

Was being billed around $53.00 per month from the start.

After roughly 8 phone calls with 10 people and a total phone time of around 2 hours and 30 minutes, things have been resolved provide future billing reflects the correct amount.

Thanks for reading.

Re: ATT Bait, Switch, and just don't seem to care.

hate to hear your troubles w/ AT&T,, but i'm glad you finally got to a tech who was able to correct everything.

i had to call and take call features off my land line, and had the intention of downgrading my DSL just to save $.... then when the tech i was talking to transfered me to the RETENTION dept, where they offered me an extra $15 off my DSL if i would keep the DSL 6.0 and the home phone.

so if you ever have a similar issue just ask to downgrade your DSL speed or have your home phone disconnected if they can't transfer you to the RENTENTION dept.

AT&T charges per data downloaded

I have had okay service from AT&T for years, paying the $49.95 a month plus the junk fees. Worked good enough, had a few outages.

This past month, apparently they implemented a cap on their downloads to 150GB per month?!?!? They were "waiving" the charges, until this month when it shows up on my bill for going over.

I'm going to try switching to a reseller who doesn't charge the cap fee, any other ideas, suggestions, or alternatives out there?

Re: AT&T charges per data downloaded

i've yet to see any cap overage charges, but it seems that many providers have had them in place for some time now. they may be implementing the charges in larger cities where their current infrastructure is more likely to already be over-populated.

since i'm in a rural area where AT&T is really my only option for DSL unless i can find a reseller who is willing to come to my area, i'm stuck with AT&T unless i want a 7 second ping time that goes along with sat-internet.

you didn't say if you were still on DSL but the $49.95 fee makes me think you already have U-verse, unless you are paying $42.95 for a DSL 6.0 and then the extra $ to get a static IP?

either way i think the caps are BS, especially when the only time you can see a speed that gets close to the advertised MAX speed.

i'll also say this, AT&T has ruined the quality of service that bellsouth used to provide before the take-over. since then AT&T has not done anything to keep-up with the bandwidth requirements as they continue to add new customers to their DSL services. AT&T seems to be more worried about generating more income without adding any additional servers to keep up with the demand created by adding these new customers. Too bad they can't take 10% of all DSL income from each area & exchange code and ear-mark that money for more servers and additional back-bone data delivery for those areas. i'd pay 10% more for an un-capped line, and i'm sure many others would too. but that would cost them too much in overhead alone just to figure out each exchange's additonal income (or at least they would claim some kind of B.S. like that)

with AT&T it's all about the $ they can take, and not about making happier customers.

I thought about cable, but anything higher than 1.5mbps was about 40 dollars and higher, and ATT 6.0 DSL was 20 dollars so I chose that. It took 10 days though to get my line wired for DSL, pretty long wait. But once activated and registered, everything went smooth. I have no issues whatever, and no slowdowns during peak periods.

EDIT: I left, so I don't have this anymore. But now they require a 12-month commitment (contract) to get that 20 dollar price. Plus the intro of caps ain't such a good thing.

Same in Savannah, it's fine.

I get similar speed in Savannah, hovering around 5.75 meg. Close enough to the non-guaranteed (talk about corporate speak!) 6 meg.

YouTube videos play fine at this speed. I'm not a movie guy so I can't comment on hulu.com or others.

My $20/month price is for a year. But as I understand, by then I'll have rolled over into Comcast's "new customer" category and get $20/month from them for a while.

Whatta rip broadband prices are. I hate government involvement in anything, but since Comcast and others are effectively monopolies it might be time for regulation...except that might make things worse, not better.

You're close to the CO

Probably less than 3000 ft. When I had 1.5 I could get 3 down at that close range. 3 would give me 5. 6.0 would give me 6. Biggest problem with AT&T is the upload. Gee, is 1 up asking way too much? Yes, on 1.5 and 3.0 I had a wide open DSL. Tech left it wide open. Still, the upload was slow at 512.

When I lived close to the CO, it was great. When I didn't, it sucked.

Yea my apt is close (less than half mile maybe) to the AT&T building in midtown, so thats probably why I get such speeds.

The 2Wire home networking modem keeps going in an out, before hand we had a Zyxel ADSL2+ modem installed which never failed us. I plan to revert back to that and change my POS linksys router to a D-Link DIR-628.

The good thing is that services are cheap compared to really any other carrier including cable in my area.

Found the article (»AT&T Apologizes For Dry Loop DSL Ordering Hassles) to get a great price.
I ordered the 6 Meg for $20 on 10-8-10, went live on 10-15-10.
Got an email shortly after sign-up. It said I did not have to be there.
By chance, I got off of work in time to catch the the tech at my house because he needed to do some inside work also because I had no NID.
Tech basically had to do a full install from the pole and install a NID.
No provided equipment, I had a spare Motorola 2210 from previous service.

09-21-11
Almost a year later. No outages or anything.

I feel I must state that I am an ADSL Installer (if there is such a thing) for BellSouth. I have worked for BellSouth for 29 years and have been a "home computer" user/programmer/game player etc. since 1984 (my first "PC" was an Atari 400, 16K RAM, Tape drive...nice toy!)

I have been installing ADSL in Charleston, SC, since its been available, here, about 3 years ago. The first install was for a college student on a Mac using OS 8.5 . Back "then", all installs where "bridged" and an installer was required. With the advent of PPP self-installs, ADSL has expanded very quickly, and I've seen a lot of problems and happily, solutions! Enough about me... but as a "reviewer", I felt I had to be up front.

My connection is right where it should be! Now I can "view" the Web as it should be. Updates/downloads are VERY fast! I ran CNET's Catchup and updated ALL my software in a very short time. Can't slap the grin off my face!

To update my original review, I now have had FA ADSL CONTINUOSLY since my first review, and I and am now starting my 33rd year at BellSouth. I've increased my connection up to the 6.0Mb (8128/512) service. Loving every minute of it!

As a tech, I've still see some really dumb things happen to and by our customers. But as for the service itself, I think it's getting better all the time.

To respond about the "value", I am paying about $32 with fees. I wasn't trying to throw anyone off, it's just me not paying attention to what the heck I'm typing.

The service has been OUTSTANDING! Still going strong with very little or no problems. I'm not sure how the U-verse system will affect Broadband usage, but I'll be giving that a try when it's available here.

Unwavering service. Connection still rock solid. Working for the same telephone company, but now it's name is AT&T. Note: The company I started working for in 1973! Now 36 years and I still at it. U-Verse is still not here, and it probably won't be before retirement.

If you want an excellent connection you can rely on, the get ADSL.

Luckily for me, my ADSL service is rock solid. I live less than 5K feet from the DSLAM, and I know the plant, system and how it works. A major advantage.

AT&T has severely hurt themselves in most customer's eyes. The "help desk" is horrible and getting a tech dispatched is next to impossible. Most of the customer's I get to see are NOT happy with the service or the way they are treated. It's a shame. It doesn't have to be.

I plan on retiring on or before July 2012. Good luck to the employees and customers after the next Union contract. It's not going to be pretty.
